Cyber Monday deals are in full swing after Black Friday on November 24 — that means that there are still loads of massive deals to be had on iPads, from the iPad mini to the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. We've already seen loads of big price drops over the last few weeks, and we're hoping for some even lower prices as the weekend goes on.

As a Mac user, I've never felt the pull of Apple's Studio Display or had the cash to splash on a Pro Display XDR. In fact, despite the fact it defies convention, I've always opted to use a gaming monitor as the external display for my Mac.

If you're anything like me, a Mac isn't the only piece of technology you own, and anyone serious about gaming will know the draw of a good gaming panel. With higher refresh rates, good resolution, and strong HDR performance, a good gaming monitor can in fact be the perfect partner for a Mac if you know where to look. What's more, with Apple silicon now offering hardware-accelerated ray-tracing and dynamic caching, gaming on a Mac is more serious than ever, so buying a gaming monitor to pair with your Mac is a better idea than it has ever been before.

Apple's Studio and Pro Display XDR monitors are quite niche in their appeal, and while there are some serious monitors for Mac on offer that don't offer good gaming performance, on balance I don't see why you wouldn't opt for a gaming monitor given how much bang for your buck you get on the spec sheet. With the right combination of ports and features, you can find a monitor that can be used seamlessly with your Mac day-to-day but also offers great performance when connected to an Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, or even a gaming PC.

My absolute top pick for a gaming monitor that can be used with the Mac is the Philips Evnia OLED Gaming Monitor.

This smashed five stars in our full Philips Evnia 42M2N8900 review thanks to its incredible 4K display, a 138Hz refresh rate, and excellent built quality. While it is very expensive, it has a 1,500,000:1 contrast ratio, HDR 10, and a plethora of ports. That includes USB-C which makes connecting a Mac incredibly easy. With a bit of tweaking you can get an excellent Mac monitor that will also excel when connected to any console or gaming PC. 

As mentioned, the Evnia is pretty expensive retailing at around $1,500, but if the thought of using a gaming monitor for Mac has piqued your interest, there are some rather excellent Black Friday deals going around on some cheaper gaming monitors that will also expand your Mac screen real estate while also serving the purpose of gaming.

As the Christmas holidays get closer, I’ve begun to look at a bunch of Black Friday deals to see what could appeal to friends and family. From air fryers to game controllers, there’s already plenty of big discounts. When it comes to my mother-in-law, though her Christmas present is the biggest priority above everyone else's this year.

You see, she has had a terrible Android phone for several years now, but she also has a 9th-gen iPad — not the best of both worlds. I’ve been waiting for November to come around, just so I could see how low the prices on certain iPhone models will go. After seeing the 128GB iPhone 12 for $340, down from $448 on Amazon, it’s the best Black Friday iPhone deal for her. It's not an easy affair to just buy her a new phone. It's something I've been laying the groundwork for, for years, so she can use it with ease without worrying about a new operating system.

For her, it’s a smaller iPad

First, a little history. For as long as I’ve known her, this Android phone has been the constant when we would come round to visit. I’d also be the technical support for her, solving issues like freeing up storage or removing a misplaced widget from her phone’s home screen.

By now though, it’s reaching the point where the phone is showing its age, no matter what I do to optimize it. Apps refuse to run, the battery lasts just a few hours, and there are plenty more issues. Lately, I have tried to steer her into using the iPad when she doesn’t want to use WhatsApp or to call people. But I’ve got another reason for doing this: I want her to get used to Apple’s ecosystem.

Granted, the tablet has a 9.7-inch display, but iPadOS looks very similar to iOS just on a bigger screen. Having this iPhone 12 will be like using a smaller iPad for her, using existing apps from the tablet, but one that can also make phone calls and use WhatsApp.

The other aspect is that, much like other family members and friends, she doesn’t care about the new features such as a 120Hz ProMotion always-on-display. As long as it works and takes good photos, she’s happy.

Is an iPhone 12 still worth it in 2023?

The other point is — why an iPhone 12? Granted, it was released in 2020, but it’s currently on a great discount, thanks to Amazon’s Black Friday deals. There’s also the matter of the third-gen iPhone SE, released back in March 2022. When you compare some of its features, the iPhone 12 easily beats the entry-level device.

For instance, the 12MP TrueDepth front camera with 4K video recording on the iPhone 12, easily trounces the 7MP front camera with 1080p recording that’s on the iPhone SE. There’s also the brighter 6.1-inch OLED display with FaceID on the iPhone 12, while the iPhone SE features a 4.7-inch LCD display. When you consider the iPhone 12 also has MagSafe and dual cameras with the ability to take photos at night, the choice seems like a no-brainer.

I’d be doing my mother-in-law a disservice if I bought her an iPhone SE — I know she’ll want to take many photos of her new grandson — so the better camera in iPhone 12 is essential for her.

When all of these features are added up, the 128GB iPhone 12 for $339 is a fantastic deal for what it offers. Especially when her iPad will be able to sync up with the iPhone, so apps, messages, passwords, and more will live on both devices, not just one.

I’d be surprised if this deal goes any lower. So, if you’re in a similar situation to me, do what I’m about to do and buy that iPhone 12 to get your loved one out of Android prison.

Earlier this year, my colleague Daryl Baxter convinced me to buy AirPods Pro 2. Just a few months later, I’m filled with regret as I look at the only device in my life that still uses a Lightning cable.

Don’t get me wrong, the AirPods Pro 2 are fantastic, and the USB-C version would solve most of my problems, but ever since Sony revealed the WF-1000XM5, I’ve wanted to pick up a pair. Now, for Amazon’s Black Friday sale, these awesome-looking in-ear buds are available for $248 — that’s a $50 saving on a pair of earbuds that have only been out a few months.

The Sony WF-1000XM5 are Sony’s flagship earbuds, and just like their headphone counterpart, the WH-1000XM5, are a stunning piece of kit. I've used the headphones, and the consensus on these is that they're just as good. That means they’ve got some of the best noise cancelation on the market, combined with a beautiful new design that I honestly prefer to Apple’s earbuds.

After seeing this deal, I’m genuinely contemplating selling my AirPods Pro 2 and picking up Sony’s counterpart to try something new and get rid of my Lightning cables for good.

Don't be like me

Not only are the sound specs on the XM5s top tier but call quality and mic quality are significantly better on Sony’s 2023 offering. Sony says the earbuds use an AI-based algorithm that will improve mic noise canceling and isolation.

Usually $299, this is the lowest-ever price we’ve seen for these earbuds, and we don’t expect to see them cheaper throughout Black Friday. Just writing this article has made my buyer’s remorse significantly worse, and I fully expect to have nightmares this evening about the Lightning port that still haunts my life despite upgrading my iPhone to USB-C.

Pay less for your pad

My choice of iPad is the 5th generation iPad Air. Equipped with the powerful M1 chip originally seen in the 2020 MacBook Air, it packs a real punch and is capable of running powerful programs like Logic Pro without problems. As someone who likes to edit videos and produce music, this feels like the perfect choice. I can tap around on a piano from the sofa without having to set up my rather clunky music production setup. 

It helps that the 10.9-inch Liquid Retina Display is vibrant and the 12mp front and back camera make it good for a quick Facetime or video on the go. 

Though the 64GB of storage is a little low for my purposes, I have an iCloud storage subscription and tend to move my files from device to device pretty regularly. For the price, it's hard to find anything that quite nails my specific needs like this iPad. This is the lowest price we have ever seen the tablet at, making it even more perfect.

The budget alternatives

Though they don't quite have the same power as the M1 iPad Air, the next two iPads are great for those on a smaller budget and definitely tempted me. I think I'll stick with the M1 version but its hard to ignore the savings.

The iPad 10th generation launched last year alongside the iPad Pro M2 models with a brand new look similar to the more expensive iPads. Arguably, this is the best iPad available, combining a modern form factor with an incredible price. You don't want to miss out on this offer, as it's far cheaper than any price we've ever seen before for this model. 

I’ve loved using my Apple Watch Series 5 since I bought it way back in 2019. Its bigger size, always-on-display, faster chip, and better battery were great upgrades from the Series 0 I owned before. I’m still happy with it, but at this point, I’d love to have the features of a blood oxygen sensor, double-tap in watchOS 10, and more. After seeing how low in price the Series 9 models are now thanks to Amazon’s Black Friday deals, I’m more tempted than ever.

For a Series 9 in a Silver Aluminum Case, I could buy one for $449 instead of $499, and use my existing Watch Bands as before. Save on the best Apple Watches

As I look at my Series 5, it feels like we’ve had a good run, literally. At this moment in time, I’m swaying towards the Graphite Stainless Steel model. Yes, it’s a smaller discount compared to the Aluminum model, but I do love that darker metallic shade on the Watch.

Also, my wife will be upgrading from a Series 4 to my Series 5 once I buy this Watch, much like when I upgraded to the iPhone 15 Pro Max in September, and she got my iPhone 13. So at the end of all this, everyone will have had a great deal in this household — even our dog for when I attempt to use Double Tap so I can respond to a message as I walk him.

I’d never buy a pair of AirPods (or any headphones, for that matter) outside of the Black Friday sales period. Of all the tech that gets discounted over Black Friday, you could bet your last dollar on AirPods making the list. And, just as expected, today you can find every current model of AirPods at a discounted price, a whole week out from Black Friday’s official kick-off date.

But which ones should you actually buy? There’s a big difference between the sound quality you get from each set of AirPods, and a gulf in pricing, but also lots to consider when it comes to the biggest discounts we’ve seen on each model. Knowing when to pull the trigger on a low-priced purchase is part of the battle here. For my money, these are what I’d be picking up.

The best of the best: AirPods Max

Apple’s luxury over-ear headphone model, of all the AirPods deals I’ve seen so far this year, I’d go for the AirPods Max. Comfortable, cool-looking and excellent for spatial audio listening sessions (especially when paired with an Apple TV 4K for a movie night), these are superb headphones. They’ll usually cost you $549, but every color option is down to $449.99 at Amazon — temptingly close to their all-time low. With no sign of the AirPods Max 2 on the horizon, these are easy to recommend.

The budget option: AirPods (2nd generation)

If you want the easy interoperability of AirPods between your iPhone, iPad and Mac devices, but without the premium price tag, the AirPods in their second generation guise are the way to go. It’s the cheapest way to get those ‘works well with Apple’ features by a long shot. And though they’re not of the highest audio quality, for the average listener they’ll do the job just fine. Any sub-$100 price tag for these is worth a shot (they’re currently at $99 on Amazon), so you can grab them with confidence — though they have been sporadically as cheap as $79. That’s a low rarely replicated though, so I wouldn’t feel cheated picking them up at $99.

The best of the rest: AirPods Pro 2 (2nd generation) and AirPods (3rd generation)

Don’t get me wrong — I’ve got nothing against the AirPods Pro 2. Their fantastic adaptive noise cancellation and top-notch audio makes them the true-wireless headphones I’d usually recommend to everyone — not just iPhone users, though they work best for those folks. And on sale here is the latest USB-C model, too. But with just an slight discount, bringing the price from $249 to $224 with B&H Photo, you’re only making a modest saving. Still a good deal, but these could hit the $200 mark eventually.  

As for AirPods 3rd generation, they sit in an awkward position in the range when it comes to the deals period. Not as good as the AirPods Pro, and not as cheap as the AirPods 2nd generation, they don’t really fit any need. And right now they’re only modestly discounted too, down from $169 to $159.99, when we’ve seen them as low as $140. I’d hold fire on these.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is the best smartwatch Apple has ever made, and I’ve loved mine since I purchased it in September. Now, thanks to Amazon’s Black Friday sale, you can pick up the Ultra 2 for $739; that’s the lowest-ever price we’ve seen for a device that’s only a few months old.

The deal includes most of the color options and band options for the Ultra 2, which means you can choose from the Ocean Band, the Alpine Loop, and the Trail Loop. One of the main reasons I love the Ultra 2 is because of Apple’s Trail Loop — genuinely the most comfortable strap I’ve ever worn on a watch of any kind. The Trail Loop is soft and functional, so I wear it all day and when I go to bed for sleep tracking. The strap is so good that I barely even realize the behemoth 49mm Watch on my wrist.

The Ultra 2 has opened my eyes to a whole new way of experiencing the Apple Watch thanks to its incredible battery life, especially when compared to the Apple Watch Series 9. For example, I manage three full days and three full nights on one single Apple Watch Ultra 2 charge. As I sit here typing this fantastic deal on Friday morning, I have 57% battery remaining despite my last charge ending on Wednesday evening. Having that extra battery compared to other Apple Watch models means you can use sleep tracking without thinking twice about charging, but if you do need to charge, the Ultra 2 charges to 100% in roughly two and a half hours.

Lowest-ever price!

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 also has the brightest display of any Apple product, with the ability to reach 3,000 nits. Unfortunately, in the Scottish winter, I barely see the sunlight, but I do not doubt that the gorgeous OLED display will be visible under most, if not all, circumstances.

Every year, when Black Friday comes around, I tend to get really excited about all the usual suspects. The reductions on laptops, headphones, and cell phones are what I look out for. But here’s the thing this year — I don’t care for any of that. I don’t want a new phone, don’t want new headphones, no new laptop, I want just one thing: A new fitness tracker.

Not even an Apple Watch — I like my Apple Watch, but it doesn’t quite fit my style, and the litany of features and flashing lights and screens feel overwhelming while I go out and about. So, instead, I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of price drops I can see on some very focused devices.

Why do I need a fitness tracker?

Ok, so it’s important to be upfront — I’m not very healthy. I live a relatively sedentary lifestyle, spending most of the day sitting at my desk for hours on end and then shifting to a sofa to play video games and watch telly. I don’t eat very well, and I have to puff on an inhaler twice a day to keep my lungs going. While I am relatively young, I understand that my body needs looking after, and I am not doing a particularly good job at it. 

The other problem is that I struggle with distractions. I tried going for a walk with my Apple Watch, but I got far too into the ins and outs of the thing before I’d even left the door, by which time a massive chunk of my midday walk time had been swallowed up by my fiddling. There is always the Apple Watch Ultra, which allows you to start an exercise with a click of the Action button, but that is way out of my price range — and retains that distracting screen.

I want to get fitter. I want to do more exercise, and I want to get out and about more to do it. But I also need something simple, that I don’t need to fiddle with to get working — just press a button, and go. Thankfully, there are some great options out there that might help me out with that.

The options

Ok, so I’ve already said I don’t want to go with an Apple Watch, which pretty much completely puts a kibosh on any kind of smartwatch. They all make it just that little bit too fiddly for my attention-defecited brain to handle, and stop me from making any reasonable progress in wanting to get fit and healthy. There are, however, some wrist-mounted options that are a great deal simpler.

The first is the Withings ScanWatch 2, a kind of smartwatch that keeps things simple. On the surface, it’s a normal-looking analog watch, albeit one with a small screen with a readout of heart rate and O2 tracking. By its very nature, it’s a whole simpler than a traditional smartwatch, and would let me press one button to start tracking my exercise, and then give me details when I actually need them. It’s not cheap — the Withings ScanWatch 2 costs $299 when Black Friday isn’t around — but with any luck we’ll see a dropped price over Black Friday.

Then there’s something like the classic Fitbit Charge 5. It’s small and mighty, giving you all your data whilst keeping things super simple on its small screen. That’s a $130 device, and hopefully I’ll be able to find some deals over the Black Friday period.

Then there are the less traditional trackers, stuff like smart rings. The Oura Ring is just one example, and it really makes everything more simple. It will track heart rate, Blood oxygen, and other data, giving it all to me at the end of the day in an App. That’s a $299 device, so saving money on it would make for an end-of-year miracle.

The good news for me is that there are alternatives to the Apple Watch that I can use to help me get fitter — although I’ll still have to take that first step out of the front door. No matter how much I might want it too, no fitness tracker is going to take it for me.

Amazon is finally letting you use Apple passkeys alongside TouchID and FaceID to sign into your account, just before the Black Friday sales begin on November 23.

According to a news post from Amazon, the shopping site is slowly rolling out these features over the next few weeks on its iOS app, saving you the hassle of typing in your password.

While you could previously autofill your password from iCloud Keychain, which stores all of your passwords behind FaceID or TouchID, there's been no other way of signing in to your Amazon account other than manually typing it all out.

To enable this on your Amazon account, go to Your Account on Amazon’s app, Login & Security, select Set Up next to Passkeys, then follow the step-by-step instructions.

With Black Friday fast approaching, there’s sure to be those moments where you’re having trouble signing in. Thankfully, these new features should make signing in much easier.

A long time coming — iMore’s Take

Passkeys were introduced to Apple devices in 2022, as a way of signing in with TouchID or FaceID only, without the need for an alphanumeric password. Sites such as PayPal, Adobe, and more have used these to help you sign in quickly and securely. But Amazon has been lagging behind in this respect for so long.

The process previously had you sign into your account, and then be sent a text message (for those signed up to two-step authentication), that would include a code that you’d need to fill in to then log in, for years.

I’ve always configured Safari to clear my history and cookies after two weeks. And for some reason, Amazon would be one of the few sites to sign me out, and have me do the above process all over again.

So I’m glad to finally see this feature that I’ve been able to use on other sites come to Amazon. I’ve already got plans to pick up an iPad Black Friday deal when the sale begins. So if the app or the site decides to sign me out, I only need to use FaceID on my iPhone 15 Pro Max to sign back in and grab a deal as quickly as I can.

Whenever someone asks me for game chair advice I always point them to AndaSeat. This company used to create racing seats for BMW and Mercedes and today they still use high-quality builds and materials in their products. There is no bulky back pillow to mess with.

So many games released this year for Nintendo Switch and it can be hard to wade through which ones are actually worth your time. In my opinion, these are the very best Switch games to have launched in 2022. Some of them certainly have flaws, but they are still really fun to play and are the hottest titles that gamers will want this year. 

If you're not sure what to get then I recommend grabbing Pokémon Scarlet or Violet. These just released on November 18 and they've been so popular that they already broke records by selling an insane 10 million copies in just the first three days. I won't lie to you, they perform horribly with lag and choppy frame rate. However, they offer the best plot of any Pokémon games, provide the first open-world Pokémon adventure, and of course have that super fun catching and collecting mechanic at their center.

The iMac might not be the most popular of Apple’s products, but it’s one of the best value, and it’s now even better value thanks to a rare Apple Cyber Monday discount.  

Amazon is offering the 24-inch M1 iMac with 8‑core CPU and 8‑core GPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB for $1,349.99 and the 512GB model for $1,549.99, that’s $150 off. There’s a catch, though, and it’s a big one. Depending on the color you want you could be waiting months for delivery. 

Opt for the silver 256GB model and you will get it before Christmas if you act quickly. All the 512GB models won’t be with you until next year.

Our 10th generation iPad review tipped the new model as one of the best iPads Apple has ever made.
