Yes, this time of year I'm typically mocking CES for its general silliness. That's because the "don't call it the Consumer Electronics Show" has lost its way. It used to be the most important tech event of the year — especially after the death of Comdex —but it's increasingly become all about quantity rather than quality.

The future is then

Once upon a time, Bill Gates was a legend of the CES stage. His opening keynotes were must-attend events, with long lines of eager press and analysts vying to get in early and glimpse whatever products the then-CEO of Microsoft would unveil. Xbox was one of them.

The only company and presenter that overshadowed it was — wait for it — Apple.

Steve Jobs never took the CES stage. And there was no Apple booth. But Apple's presence was always felt.

Macworld took place right after CES and, more often than not, it generated the buzz. If a big Apple announcement was imminent, press and analysts would drop CES, jump on a plane from Vegas to CES, and race to see what Steve had to show off.

iPhone was the biggest and best example.

Then, Apple stopped going to Macworld. Steve Jobs stopped taking the stage. Apple stopped announcing big new products on New Year schedule. iPad was still in January. So was the Verizon iPhone. But some years Apple didn't announce anything until March... even June.

When Apple called, everyone still rushed to answer. But what happened when Apple didn't call?

Products as vision

Steve Jobs at Macworld and Bill Gates at CES weren't just keynotes. They were states-of-the-union for the tech community. They weren't just about products. They were about visions.

Microsoft can't do that anymore. But Apple still can.

Tim Cook and Apple's superb executives could put together a keynote that showcases not just the company's products but its vision for the new year.

Yes, Apple now sees Apple Stores are the biggest and best way to reach the most customers, and not just at events but every day. But it doesn't have to be an either-or situation. A nearly trillion-dollar company can do whatever it wants.

Only Apple can go to CES

Think a lot of the chatter and buzz this year focused not on Apple but on Amazon and Google? That's not surprising, given Apple didn't even show up to play. If it did — well, you know what happens when the 800lbs gorilla jumps in the pool?

Now, imagine the splash Apple would make if it jumped in the CES pool.

It's time.

If you haven't already heard, Apple, Valve, and HTC have all teamed up to bring VR to the Mac on macOS High Sierra. Using either an externally mounted graphics processing unit (eGPU) or using the adequately powered Vega GPU inside the iMac Pro, you can now be part of the VR/AR revolution whilst running Mac hardware and software.

Vive Pro

You may know HTC as being makers of various smartphone products but it is also a pioneer in the burgeoning VR world. HTC had licensed technology from gaming company Valve to create the high-end VR display called the Vive. Continuing with their partnership, HTC is today announcing an upgrade to the Vive headset, the Vive Pro.

Vive vs Vive Pro

The Vive Pro is touting an upgraded resolution of 2880x1600 pixels and two front facing cameras. The original Vive by contrast sports an OLED display resolution of 2160x1200 pixels and only one front facing camera. On top of this, the Vive pro will also add built-in headphones to the system whereas the original Vive required the use of either third party headphones or the purchase of the deluxe audio strap add-on. As such, this isn't an announcement of a second generation Vive as it is more of a refresh to the existing system.

It can use the same Base Stations (although it is version 2-compatible for up to four Base Stations) as the original Vive for tracking, so you can optionally buy the headset only and not the complete system. It will be available some time in Q1. No mention of pricing as of yet.

Wireless adapter incoming

HTC also announced is wireless adapter add-on using the WiGig spec that will make your Vive pro tether free coming in the summer of 2018. This is likely in response to third party wireless adapter add-ons such as the one from TPcast that have adapters for the Vive and the Oculus Rift. It is unclear if this will be Mac compatible at release but HTC has confirmed that it will run on the original Vive headset. Also no mention of pricing as of yet.

Final comments

I have three VR headsets in my home. Will a welcome but limited bump in resolution be enough for enthusiasts to upgrade to? My feeling is that it's doubtful. However, if you are in the market for a new VR headset and want the best resolution and tracking abilities available in VR Today, then the HTC Vive pro will be what you'll want in 2018. There are some younger people today that have no idea what it's like to take a picture without already knowing how it will come out. Thanks to digital photography, we never have to worry about taking a bad picture, but we also never have the joy of seeing a developed set of pictures for the first time and discovering accidentally perfect shots. Polaroid is changing that with a revival of their most popular instant camera from nearly 40 years ago. The OneStep is back, and like it was in 1977; analog. But now it's got an upgrade for the 21st Century — like a USB charger and a timer.

The OneStep 2, like its predecessor, has nothing more than a small eyepiece for a viewfinder. You aim, point, and snap a picture with the fixed-focus lens (no zoom, no image stabilization, no digital magic) and an onboard flash that you can manually turn on or off.

The film, which is where the real magic happens, uses a chemical process that takes place right before your eyes. The OneStep uses iType and Polaroid 600 film in its updated camera, but the results are about the same as they were in the 70s. A unique wash of muted colors that Polaroid describes as a "dreamy aesthetic," but I would call kitschy and awesome. Light burns? Yes, please. Lens flare? I'm in!

Did I mention that the film is the same size as the original? No more tiny Instax minis. The full-sized 3 X 4-inch i-Type or 600 film packs come in black-and-white or color. The 600 also comes in blue or pink duochrome film, and you can get the standard color film with colored frames.

Though you can charge the OneStep 2 with a USB cord, you can't hook it up to the internet and post images that you've captured. You can't perfect a digital camera pose just for the purpose of transferring it to the OneStep to print out. Nope. This is purely analog.

It appears that the OneStep 2 won't be the only retro analog camera that Polaroid will release. The company, which was fully acquired by The Impossible Project in 2017, started a new brand called Polaroid Originals, which is "dedicated to reinventing analog instant photography for the modern era."

I'm sold.

It comes in white or granite (black) and costs $100. Film ranges in price between $15 and $20, depending on which type you want. You can order the OneStep 2 directly from Polaroid Originals and add your choice of film before you hit the checkout button.

Today at CES 2018, Satechi announced a new Multiport Travel Charging station that won my heart at the mention of Nintendo Switch. It's a Type-C 75-watt wall charger that looks like its about the size of a bandaid box. It has a USB-C port, a Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 supported port, and two standard USB-A ports.

The USB-C port pushes out 60-watts of charge and supports fast charging for the iPhone X, iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, and the iPad Pro. If you've got a Qualcomm Quick Charge device, you're in luck because this box supports version 3.0, which is supposedly about 38% faster than Quick Charge 2.0. You can charge multiple devices at once for up to 75 watts of charging output.

If you've ever stayed at a hotel with a couple of friends and limited wall plugs, you'll know just how frustrating it is to try to plug all of your devices in at the end of the day to charge. Someone ends up not being able to charge up overnight and compromises with an early morning re-up.

Philips is a name that used to be synonymous with toothbrushes and shavers, but in the years since entering the smart lighting market with Hue, it's become a household name in an entirely new way.

Today at CES 2018, the company announced three new endeavors to help bridge the gap between the average person who just wants a few smartphone-controlled lights and the more serious gamer or host that wants to use light to enhance entertainment.

To that end, Philips says that it is working with gaming company Razer to integrate with its Chroma platform, allowing gamers to synchronize lights to popular games like Overwatch. In a demo at CES 2018, the effects were subtle and impressive and didn't distract from the overall gaming experience. Part of the Hue Entertainment platform, Razer is Philips' first partner, but others will be announcing similar enterprises in the months to come.

Until then, Philips says Mac and PC users can enjoy synchronized movies and music using the very cool Hue Sync app, which analyzes a piece of art — movie, TV show, or song — and automatically generates a script for the lights to pulse along with the content. Hue Sync won't be available until the second quarter of this year, as Philips is still working out the bugs.

The third pillar of Philips' CES announcement is a new app, which adds back the color picker feature that was eliminated in version 2.0, along with enhancing the overall speed and intuitiveness of the app. Finally, Philips says it will launch a series of weather-resistant outdoor bulbs in the summer, focusing on ambiance and security.

Automotive electronics manufacturer Alpine unveiled their newest CarPlay head unit at CES 2018 in Las Vegas today, and it's safe to say that the company's iconic 9" system isn't just for trucks and SUVs anymore.

Dubbed the iLX-F309 and nicknamed HALO9, the new in-dash system has a versatile floating design that requires no custom installation and can be placed in almost any car. According to Alpine's release, the 9-inch screen is attached to an adjustable mount connected to a 1-DIN chassis, and once installed, the screen and mount are fixed to the chassis for a sturdy fit. Users can also move the screen closer or further away from the dashboard after installation as well as angle it up or down at a maximum of 45 degrees for the best visibility to ensure safety.

Mike Anderson, Vice President and General Manager of Alpine's aftermarket business unit, noted that HALO9 was a response to consumer requests in a statement:

What can it do?

Essentially, HALO9 is an AM/FM/audio/video receiver with a 9-inch WVGA touch screen. It also has a mech-less design, meaning it's definitely more suited for smartphone compatibility through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto as it can't natively play CDs and DVDs. With the iLX-F309, you can access and control maps, music, messages, and phone calls from your Apple or Android device, all on the unit's touch screen. HALO9 also boasts the following:

• Bluetooth wireless technology with audio streaming
• A built-in HD Radio tuner that's SiriusXM-ready (Though, of course, you need to have a SiriusXM SXV300 Connect Vehicle Tuner Kit and SiriusXM subscription if you plan on listening to those stations)
• A USB port for video or audio playback (FLAC, MP3, WMA and AAC)
• An AUX input
• An HDMI input (with the option to add a second HDMI input via the KCX-630HD HDMI Selector, sold separately)
• Alpine TuneIt App integration
• A "My Favorites" feature that allows you to make custom shortcuts to your favorite audio sources and contacts
• Pandora control

Though the HALO9's design is mech-less, if you really dig listening to your CDs and watching DVDs you can also add the company's DVE-5300 CD/DVD player.

Satechi has unveiled at CES 2018 its latest addition to the iPhone charging pool. While the rest of the tech accessory making world is jumping on the wireless charging bandwagon, Satechi is going back to its roots with a dual charger for the iPhone and Apple Watch. It uses your own USB Lightning cable, so you'll never fear losing support and it works with your non-wireless charging iPhones, too.

The Smart Dual Charging Station has two stands, one for your iPhone and one for your Apple Watch. Each stand has its own secret compartment where you can wrap up your Lightning cable or Apple Watch wireless charger (cable management is our friend). Plug the charging station (with it's USB-C power cable) into the wall and get a 15-watt charge that distributes between your iPhone and Apple Watch so they can charge up at the same time.

Around my house, we only have one wireless charging supported device - the iPhone X - but we have a half-dozen Lightning supported device. Sure, I love tossing my iPhone onto the table, knowing it'll get juiced up while it sits there, but my iPhone 7 Plus, iPad Pro, iPhone SE, and other iOS devices aren't on the Qi standard yet. So, its nice to see that Satechi is thinking broadly to cover nearly all iPhones, not just the newest ones.

The Smart Dual Charging Station will come in silver or space gray brushed aluminum and will be available this spring for $65.

Though there have been a couple of crowd-funding attempts to get a case that also charges your USB-C MacBook Pro, Incase is the first company I've heard of that has a finished product. Not only does the IconConnected Power Sleeve send some juice to your MacBook Pro while you're on the go, it's sleek and attractive and only adds a minimal amount of size and weight to your thin, light laptop.

The design is based on the Incase Icon, which is a sleek sleeve made from the company's specially designed neoprene outer layer and faux fur lining. It also features a protective bumper frame to help protect from damage if you drop it.

The built-in battery powers at 14,000mAh and includes a USB-C cable and charging port. It also has an external USB-A charging port so you can juice up your iPhone, iPad, or anything that has a USB-A cable. Incase notes that the case will charge the MacBook Pro from empty to full once, plus have some juice left over for some of your other gadgets.

The IconConnected Power Sleeve will be available for both the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro, late 2016 and newer.

Incase doesn't have an official release date, but are expecting it to launch sometime in the third quarter of 2018 for $200.

Misfit just unveiled the latest in its line of hybrid smartwatches at CES. The Path is being touted as Misfit's smallest and most minimalist hybrid smartwatch yet. It looks like an analog watch but acts like its smart.

The Path looks very similar to Misfit's Phase hybrid smartwatch (but the Phase is actually still a little too big for my personal taste). We don't have the watch case measurements at this time, but if the Path is, say, 38mm instead of 41, I'm sold!

The Path's casing is made from matte finished stainless steel and looks pretty in pictures. It's going to be available in rose gold, silver, gold, and silver with gold accents. It comes with a soft silicon sports strap, but Misfit also has a large selection of compatible 16mm watch bands.

Like Misfit's other smartwatch hybrids, the Path features a three-axis accelerometer that is used to track your steps, calories burned, distance traveled, and sleep patterns. I've used the Shine 2 for sleep tracking and found it to be very reliable. I'm sure the Path works the same way.

So how does this not-exactly-smart smartwatch work? Well, it uses a series of vibrations and a color-coded light on the watch face to send you notifications. Additionally, you can assign specific contacts to a specific time on the watch face, so with the touch of a button, you'll know who is contacting you.

The LED notification light corresponds to different apps that you can customize. For example, you can assign blue to Facebook and green to emails. When your Path lights up, you'll know where the notification is coming from.

There's also a button dedicated to additional smart features. You can assign it to remotely play and pause your music, take a picture, and more. It also supports IFTTT, so you can really make use of smart devices simply by assigning an IFTTT path to your ... Path.

It's swim-proof and water-resistant up to 50 meters and uses a standard coin cell battery that you can replace any time, so you don't have to worry about battery degradation.

The best part is that Misfit is compatible with iPhone, Android, and Windows phone devices. It is customized and controlled using an app available on all platforms.

Misfit has come a long way since it launched the first Shine step tracker in 2012. They've gone from making a small disc that tracks your steps and notifies you when you reach your goals to being a successful hybrid smartwatch maker competing with the likes of Android Wear and Apple Watch. Not to bad for a startup that got its first round of funding from an Indiegogo campaign.

I'm excited to check out the Path. Hopefully, it's new small, minimalist design will fit my tastes a little better. I need a smartwatch that I can wear with a formal evening gown.

The Misfit Path is scheduled to launch in spring of 2018 and will cost $149.99.

This morning at CES 2018 in Las Vegas, smart security company Abode announced its first ever standalone security device. Called Iota, the device features a built-in full HD resolution camera, a built-in gateway (with Z-Wave, ZigBee and abode RF connectivity), support for Apple HomeKit, and Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant integration. The Iota security system is ideal for individuals who want the freedom and flexibility to monitor their home how they want to, whether that means using a combination of smart home devices or just Iota by itself.

Iota is incredibly simple to install, and can be placed anywhere AC power is available. And because it's Wi-Fi enabled, it can connect to your broadband router wirelessly or via an Ethernet cable. Best of all, Iota's integrated battery and 4G/LTE cellular backup will keep you connected for 10+ hours, even if your internet connection (or your power!) is down. Netamo announced at CES that it's going all-in with Apple's HomeKit support within the next few months. You won't have to buy a new model, either. You'll be able to get support for any model Welcome or Presence security cameras through a firmware update.

Support for Siri will allow you to ask your virtual assistant to show you specific areas around your house, like the front door or backyard by saying, "Hey Siri, show me the [location]." You can also turn on or off, or adjust the lighting of the Presence flood light.

The Home app will allow you to set up scenarios that will trigger under certain conditions. For example, you'll be able to set a scene for "Arrive Home," which will turn on the Presence floodlight, unlock your doors, and turn on your indoor lights (if you've got all of those connected smart gadgets, too). You'll also be able to watch live streams of your security cameras, get notifications when motion is detected, and more.

Kohler just revealed the smart home enthusiast's dream line of appliances for the kitchen and bathroom at this year's CES. Featuring an Alexa-enabled mirror, a smart shower and bathtub, a toilet, toilet accessories, and a smart faucet, there's no shortage of new products to add to your smart home setup.

Verdera Voice Lighted Mirror

This smart mirror is an Alexa-enabled device, meaning it has Amazon's voice assistant built right in. Along with controlling the built-in lighting, you can use your voice to control other Kohler Konnect products.

Along with special lighting modes for applying makeup or styling your hair, the mirror features a motion-activated nightlight so you can easily find your way around the bathroom. The 33-inch mirror comes in three widths — 24", 34", 40" — so it's compatible with bathrooms of all sizes and shapes.

The Verdera Voice Lighted Mirror isn't currently available but you can visit Kohler's site and sign up to be notified when it arrives.

Sensate Faucet

Kohler's smart faucet features support for Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and the Google Assistant allowing you to operate water flow using just your voice.

You can turn on and off your faucet, measure precise amounts ("pour two cups of water"), and monitor water usage and leaks. A smart faucet might — at first — seem like an unnecessary luxury, but you've got to admit — it would be nice not to have to convert measurements and check and recheck measuring cups.

The Sensate Faucet isn't currently available but you can visit Kohler's site and sign up to be notified when it arrives.

Touchless Response Flush Toilet & PureWarmth toilet Seat

It's sort of gross grasping a handle that you know has been touched by any number of hands that've just wrapped up on, well, disposing of waste. Kohler's Touchless Response Flush Toilet features a motion sensor that you can use to flush the toilet without ever needing to grasp the handle (though the handle is functional). You can also customize the brightness of the nightlight surrounding the handle, making it easy to find in the dark or low-light settings.

If you find yourself bracing before sitting down on a cold toilet seat, Kohler's PureWarmth seat might be a life-changing addition to your bathroom. You can control the temperature, schedule, and duration of the heat as well as the built-in night light using Kohler's app.

Neither the Touchless Response Flush toilet nor the PureWarmth toilet seat are currently available but you can visit Kohler's site and sign up to be notified when it arrives.

DTV+ Shower System

Kohler's shower system takes the smart shower concept to a whole 'nother level. The DTV+ system lets you customize water temperature, showerhead pressure, body spray nozzles, music, lighting, steam, and shower duration. Basically, if you've got a fancy shower system, Kohler's DTV+ can be the brains behind all that brawn.

The Kohler Konnect app lets you manage your presets to create the perfect shower environment. But what if you're actually in the shower already? The wall-mounted interface gives you nuanced control of your system and you can use your voice to access presets.

"Give me my morning-after-a-long-night-out shower" could trigger an icy spray and soothing music to awaken your senses and calm the headache.

The DTV+ Shower System isn't currently available but you can visit Kohler's site and sign up to be notified when it arrives.

PerfectFill Technology

This bath system will free you from the monotony that is sitting by your bath waiting for it to heat up and fill. A valve, system controller, and drain work together to give you complete control of your bathing experience — it senses and controls depth, temperature, and draining.

Using your voice you can literally command your bath to fill to a certain level at a certain temperature. You can leave the room and come back to a blissfully steamy tub instead of an overflowing bathroom or a tiny, chilly swimming pool. When you're done bathing, your water will drain away at your command.

The PerfectFill System isn't currently available but you can visit Kohler's site and sign up to be notified when it arrives.

If you're looking for the toilet of the future, you've found it in Kohler's new Numi Intelligent toilet. Featuring more gizmos and gadgets than you'd certainly expect to find in a waste removal device, the Numi is like a smart speaker that also, erm, cleanses your nether regions and handles the plumbing.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about jamming while, erm, disposing of waste, but if that's your thing then this toilet is also your thing.

The Numi Intelligent toilet isn't currently available but you can visit Kohler's site and sign up to be notified when it arrives.

Today, smart home device and accessory manufacturer Elgato announced the latest addition to its line of HomeKit-enabled tech at CES 2018 in Las Vegas. Called Eve Button, the "practical and elegant" controller allows you to manage all your favorite HomeKit scenes and devices by simply pushing a button — a great option for those who don't carry their phone around their house 24/7 or those who cannot/prefer not to issue voice commands.

To use Eve Button, all you need to do is take a few minutes to install the device via either Apple's Home app or the Eve app — no bridge configuration or third-party cloud service necessary. After set-up is complete, you can use it to individually control up to three HomeKit scenes by doing either a single, double, or long press on the top of the device. What's more, assigning accessories and actions (and their durations) to the types of press is incredibly easy, and can all be done within Home.

In addition to Eve Button, Elgato also announced that in March it will launch the newest iteration of its Eve Room — an indoor sensor with HomeKit technology that tracks air quality, temperature and humidity. The new Eve Room uses the latest sensor technology from Swiss manufacturer Sensirion and has all the beloved features of the original, as well as boasting cool new features like an E-Ink display that allows you to view your data without using your phone and a built-in battery that can be charged using any USB power source. And, like all Eve products, it works right out of the box, no hubs or bridges required.

Markus Fest, CEO of Elgato, lauded Eve Room's convenience and precision in a statement:

If you're interested in adding Eve Button to your HomeKit setup, you can pre-order one now by heading to either Amazon or the Elgato website (or, later this month, Apple's website). The controller is priced at $49.95. The new Eve Room will be available for purchase in March (from the same retailers) for $99.95.

At CES 2018, Elgato announced its newest Thunderbolt 3 compatible hub, The Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock, and this time it's a lot smaller but just as powerful. The little brother of the Elgato Thunderbolt 3 Dock comes with an HD-supported DisplayPort, HDMI port, Gigabit Ethernet, and USB-A port. Though it has fewer ports, it's got the same level of speed of its big brother with up to 40Gbps throughput.

I'm a big fan of the Thunderbolt 3 Dock. I use it all of the time with my MacBook Pro, but it's not for everyone, especially at a $300 price point. It's worth every penny but is designed more for people that use multiple displays and need a lot of extra ports for daily use.

The Mini seems to better fit the average computer user looking for a bit more versatility and flexibility than the USB-C ports that come with your MacBook Pro.

Unlike the Thunderbolt 3 Dock, it doesn't need a separate power source. You connect it directly to your MacBook Pro. It produces up to 4K video output, high bandwidth data signals, and the most current USB-transfer support.

Elgato doesn't have a price tag or official launch date, but it's expected in the spring of 2018. You can expect us to let you know when it's available and how much it'll cost.

Nanoleaf, the creators of the exquisitely beautiful Aurora smart lighting art (as well as the unique smart bulbs One, Bloom, and Ivy) have unveiled at CES 2018 their latest addition to their geometric, futuristic home design products. The Remote is more than just the exact kind of object I imagined I'd someday have in the future, it's also a controller for your smart home devices.

The Remote is HomeKit-enabled, so you can link your Nanoleaf lights and all of your smart home devices to control scenes all in one place. You can assign a different scene for each face of the dodecahedron, like locking the front door, turning up the heater, or turning off all of the lights in the house, and then use the Remote to control those scenes. Position the face of the scene you want to trigger upward. You can also adjust the brightness of lights by turning the Remote clockwise or counter-clockwise. It's so cool.

Having a physical controller for all of your HomeKit-enabled devices is super cool. It means everyone in the house can control your smart home. They don't have to use an iPhone or have access to your Home app. It's just sitting there, waiting for anyone to use. It's more versatile than some kind of wall switch or plug because anything you can control with HomeKit can be assigned to one of the 12 faces of the Remote. It runs on AA batteries, so you don't have to worry about long-term battery degradation.

I'm excited by the versatility of the Remote, but I'm even more excited by what it looks like. It's such a cool and unusual-looking polygon. It's like some kind of futuristic glowglobe that I've only read about in Frank Herbert novels. It lights up and changes colors every time you rotate it to trigger a command. It sits there on your table, calling to your house guests who will no doubt ask for an explanation. Talk about a conversation piece!

The best part is that the Remote will retail for only $49.99. To put that into perspective, the Siri Remote for Apple TV costs $59 and it doesn't light up or look cool sitting on your coffee table. You're lucky if you can even find it.

The Remote will be available this spring from Nanoleaf. In the meantime, you might as well get Aurora so you can really wow your houseguests with your home of the future.
