With the Amazon Kindle being the go-to eBook reader for most people and the Kindle store being the place to get those eBooks, you'd be forgiven for forgetting that Apple has its own option. For those who'd prefer to read on an iPad, Mac, or iPhone the Apple Books app and accompanying store might be a better option — ignoring for a moment the fact that you can download the Kindle app on all three of those devices.

But while many of us are all-in on Kindle, it seems that plenty of others are using Apple Books as their destination for a good story, as well they should. It's a well-designed app that looks great and works well, and with all of the best books available, there's little reason not to go the Apple Books route unless you like reading on a Kindle and its E Ink display. I do, so Apple Books is a no-go for me, but I'm not everyone and plenty of people are more than happy to read on their iPad mini, for example.

To that end, Apple has shared a list of the most popular books across a few different categories including audiobooks — because yes, Apple Books has audiobooks as well. What's more, just like Apple Music Replay 2023, Apple Books now has a year-in-review option for those who wondered just how many books they'd read and how many minutes they spent doing it.

All the popular kids

This year's Year in Review is available on the iPhone and iPad and can be found in the Read Now tab under Top Picks. Note that you'll need to have marked at least three books as finished for it to appear, though.

There, you'll find information about the books you've read or listened to through 2023 including personalized reading highlights. Apple will also tell you what reader type you are. The press release explaining this says that "there are six reader types to discover, including The Contemporary for readers of trendy titles; The Completist for readers of multiple books in a series; The Seeker for nonfiction readers; The Wanderer for multigenre readers; The Deep Diver for single-genre readers; or The Free Spirit for readers with wide-ranging interests across the book world." There is sure to be some interesting information in there, that's for sure.

As for the most popular books, Apple says that the top five most popular nonfiction books of the year include, in this order:

1. Spare by Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex
2. The Woman in Me by Britney Spears
3. The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder by David Grann
4. Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity by Peter Attia and Bill Gifford

As for the fiction books, author Rebecca Yarros has had a particularly good year, taking the top two spots.

Pocket has long been one of the best read-later apps around and now it's getting a refresh.

The updated Pocket has been around on Android for a little while but parent company Mozilla has today announced that Pocket is rolling out a new mobile and web interface that includes those of us using iPhones.

Mozilla says that Pocket is now "faster and simpler to use," two things that are always a good idea when you're just trying to save content and then read it later.

Rolling out now

The announcement blog post says that Pocket's update is rolling out right now to users who have iOS 16 or later installed. Assuming that's you, a new Home experience will likely be the first thing that you will notice.

"With the launch of the latest version of Pocket on iOS (available once you download iOS 16 on your iPhone), the redesigned app will be faster and simpler to use with a focus on a new Home experience – a starting off point for visiting everything in Pocket, from your saved content to the articles and Curated Collections we think you’ll love," the announcement reads. "We will be continuing to build on Home to provide you with different perspectives on what you’ve saved and what you’ve discovered, as well as topics like Best of the Web, Editors’ Picks, In Case You Missed It, and more."

Pocket also now features a simplified navigation and settings screen, we're told, while a new "Saves" tab will replace "My List" with an updated design that will make "it even more streamlined and giving Pocket users one place to access features like search, and listen, as well as to view your tagged items and favorites"

The Kindle Oasis has been reduced on Amazon by a not insubstantial $75, bringing it down to its "Amazon Prime Day reduction" low price of $175 at Amazon. While this makes it cheaper than full price, it's still around $50 more expensive than the next Kindle down the list, the Kindle Paperwhite Signature edition. But what are you getting with the Kindle Oasis, and why is it worth choosing the most premium Kindle over other e-readers in the range? Well, I've got one — and I'm going to tell you why.

Before we get started, it's worth keeping in mind that the Prime Day deals will only last until tonight, and after that, the Kindle family is going back up to full price. So if you're looking for a base model Kindle or a Kindle Oasis, then you're going to have to move fast as they'll be back up to full price before you know it.

Why get a Kindle in the first place?

I love books. I love the smell of them, the feeling of turning the page, the colorful covers, and the "thud" that a hardback makes when you put it down on a table. What I don't love is the amount of space they take up. It's nice to have them all on shelves to show off what kind of books you like reading, but it reaches a point where there's not even enough space available for any new books to slot in. Instead, if you're anything like me, you end up with boxes upon boxes of books in cupboards or in the loft that occasionally enter a kind of bookshelf rotation, with the books swapping around on the shelves every now and again, or when I can be bothered.

I never thought I'd like a Kindle or any kind of e-reader for that matter. There aren't any pages to turn and sniff, no colorful covers, and no thud when you put the device down on a table. That was until I bought my first Kindle. It was the base model, with no touch screen and a bunch of buttons all over the place. I didn't think I'd like it, even as I unboxed it, making myself look happy for the very generous people who had bought it for me. It wasn't until I had to pack up for a holiday that the little device truly came into its own.

Oddly, it wasn't the e-ink screen that convinced me. I'd never used the best iPad to read any books and generally avoided anything with a screen to read for long periods of time so as to not get eye strain. Sure, the e-ink screen was nice on the eyes, but it still wasn't a page.

It was the space-saving aspect of it that made me realize just how useful a Kindle is. I'm a book-a-day kind of gal when I go away, and when you're heading off into the deepest darkest depths of the North of England for two weeks, you tend to bring more books than you know what to do with. Suddenly, I didn't have to restrict my book intake. I could download all the books I could ever read onto my little Kindle and pop it in my rucksack. Those 14 books I'd leave with and 20 I'd come back with two weeks later were no longer a space issue — it was all on a little device I could almost fit in a pocket.

But why the Oasis?

Once I'd realized that the Kindle was the future of reading, I used it for years until I dropped it down a mountain path, and watched it tumble to its doom at the base of a rocky outcrop. I don't think devastated quite cuts it; I was bereft of my Kindle. A replacement was necessary, and I wanted all the features.

I wanted a warm light, a sturdy aluminum chassis, and, most of all, buttons. The tactile click of the buttons had replaced the act of turning the page for me — I don't think I could do without it. When I went shopping, I looked at the whole Kindle range and each one had at least one of my requirements. Only one, however, had all of them: the Kindle Oasis.

Its sleek aluminum shell is a joy to hold, the e-ink screen is the clearest I've ever seen on an e-reader, and the warm light does a surprisingly good job of making eye strain a thing of the past as you read in the dark. I wish it had a USB -C charging port (it remains with a micro USB connector) and the Bluetooth connection it has, for some reason, is useless. But besides those two things, the Kindle Oasis is the best Kindle you can buy.

What about the other Kindles?

They're great! But they're not the Oasis. If you're looking for a cheap way to dip your toe into the joys of reading on an e-ink screen then the base model Kindle is an absolute steal at the moment for $45 at Amazon on Prime Day. It's even got a front light, so you won't have to buy an extra light. It's got everything you need in an e-reader, but not necessarily what you might want. Nothing extra. Nothing that says "I read books all the time." The base Kindle is a fine device and likely good for almost everyone, but if you're like me, you'll want something more.

The Kindle Paperwhite is also a solid e-reader and it's down to $95 at Amazon at the moment for the Prime Day sale. It features some of the best aspects of the Kindle Oasis. There's an adjustable warm light for reading in the dark and a 6.7-inch screen that covers the front of the device — but that's also the problem. There are no buttons to bring at least some of the physical feeling of reading a book. Again, while the Kindle Paperwhite is a stunning device it just doesn't really offer enough over the base model anymore to be worth it.

The Kindle Paperwhite signature edition is not worth the money either. At the moment, it's barely cheaper than the Oasis, and the only feature you gain is wireless charging and a USB-C charging port. If it wasn't $135 at Amazon, it would be worth it. But for $40 extra with the Oasis, you gain a lot more.

There's more heft to the Oasis, with its aluminum shell, and the light is more pleasing on the eyes thanks to the extra LEDs that Amazon has packed in next to the screen. It's got this great feel, with an ergonomically designed shape that contours and twists around your hand to make reading even more comfortable than reading a book. Sure, you can use the screen to turn your pages, but there are two marvelously clicky buttons that do a far better job in the widened bezel on the device's right-hand side. Left-handed? No worries, turn the device upside down and the screen rights itself, and the buttons are on the correct side.

Look, just buy the Oasis

Do you need to buy the Kindle Oasis? No, if you need a really basic portable reading device, then skip the Paperwhite and Oasis and go for the base model. It's light and is less than half the price of its bigger sibling. If you're looking for the absolute best experience that an e-reader can muster, then buy the Kindle Oasis. It's beautiful, comfortable, and currently $75 off. Just please, please don't read on your iPad. Your eyes will hate you. Like a lot of white Americans, I have, shall we say, gaps in my understanding of systemic racial injustice in the United States. It's not that I'm blind to it, it's just that I don't have a full understanding of the issues at hand because I lack first-hand experience, or I'm not sure how to recognize or confront racism when I see it.

The books on this list are a great start for anyone looking to expand their knowledge on these issues or to see a new perspective on life in America. Ulysses, a popular text editor for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, has received a significant new update to Ulysses 19. A lot is going on in version 19, starting with the addition of mouse and trackpad support on the iPad.

But there's a lot in Ulysses 19 that impacts the app across platforms, so let's dive right in.

Mouse and trackpad support

If you're using a trackpad or mouse with your iPad, say on the new Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro, you'll be delighted with this update. The cursor snaps to controls, two-finger swipes on the trackpad smoothly open and close the library and attachment menus, too.

Having been able to test it out prior to launch, I can tell you that this support feels excellent and is right at home on the iPad, especially if you're used to using Ulysses on a Mac, where these sorts of gestures have been available forever.

Material sheets

The rest of Ulysses updates are available across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

First, we have an intriguing aspect of the update. You can now mark certain documents, generally scratch notes, research material, and other extraneous bits of writing that shouldn't be part of your final text, as "material."

Sheets marked as material won't be a part of your final document. If you set goals for a particular group, any material sheets that you mark as such won't be counted towards those goals, either, at least by default. So if you plan to export a multi-document folder into which you've put a report and all related research, mark the extraneous bits as material, and they won't show up in your exported PDF.

Say, for instance, you're writing a book. You don't want all of your chapters to be in a single document, so naturally, you split them up into multiple sheets inside a folder for your book. When the time comes to export everything you've written, the export preview includes all of your chapter sheets as part of a single export.

If you had any additional sheets full of research material, those would also be included in that export unless you either deleted them or moved them out of the folder. Now, though, you can mark sheets as material, and any sheets marked as such won't be included in that final export document, nor will they count towards any goals you had for the folder.

Markdown file keywords

Ulysses has long had a keyword system, which lets you better organize your work. For instance, if I wanted to be able to find all of the articles that I've written about the Shortcuts app, I'd add a 'Shortcuts' keyword to the sidebar of the document.

Previously, you could only use keywords in native Ulysses documents. But in Ulysses 19, you can now use them with Markdown (.md) files. When you want to add a keyword to a Markdown file, add a '#' followed — without a space — by your keyword. When you go to export as Markdown, your keywords will appear at the bottom of the document.

If you export a Markdown file with keywords to another app, like Bear or iA Writer, those apps will recognize your keywords as keywords and organize those documents appropriately.

Everything else

There are a few other notable additions to Ulysses with version 19. You can now add external folders from the Files app directly into Ulysses on iPhone and iPad, such as from a cloud storage provider of your choice or a GitHub client, and edit the files in those folders in Ulysses. There's also the option to import or export backups of your text library.

There are also new filtering options for things like whether something has goals, or you can sift through your available material sheets.

Ulysses 20 beta program

Hot on the heels of this version 19 release, the Ulysses development team is opening registration for the beta program for the next major revision of the app, Ulysses 20. You can sign up to join the program on the Ulysses website, though remember that signing up isn't a guarantee. While the developers are tight-lipped on just what's in store for Ulysses 20, they do say that they're working on "a few awesome new features that need thorough testing," so if you have any interest, go ahead and sign right up.

Ulysses 19 is available as a free download on the App Stores for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, though there is a subscription ($4.99 per month, $39.99 per year) to unlock the app for all of your devices after a free trial.

OK, so you're stuck at home, trying to figure out how to entertain your four-year-old, but also trying to figure out ways you can get their early education started because, you know, preschools are shut down right now. There are a lot of educational apps out there and some of them are really good, but many of them focus on K-12 education and not much for the years prior to your little tyke's first day at kindergarten.

They won't need to call mom and dad for help when it's time to try something different. It's very discovery-based. Taping or swiping will unveil something new.

Activities your little one does is shared with you via the parenting app, Sago Mini Parents. In the parenting app, you'll see some general information about topics (like bugs and rainbows), plus see what your little one has been working on (like tracing numbers). If they draw a picture, not only is the drawing process on-screen recorded, but their voice is recorded (with your permission given first, of course), so the things they say while drawing can be played back for you later while you watch the art unfold, giving you a little insight into their creative minds.

ASUS recently announced the official launch of its dual-screen notebook, the ZenBook Pro Duo, which will be available Sept. 6. There are two upgradable models. The entry level model starts at $2,500 and comes with a 2.6GHz 6-core processor with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage. The advanced model has a 2.3GHz 8-core processor with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage, which starts at $3,000.

The ZenBook Pro Duo sports an advanced OLED Ultra HD screen with a 3840 x 2160 resolution.

Oh, and it also has a second 4K display, called the ScreenPad Plus, that sits above the keyboard ... like the Touch Bar of a MacBook Pro.

Like the Touch Bar, but so very much not like the Touch bar. For one, it's a 4K UHD display. It's also fairly large at 14-inches with a 32:9 aspect ratio. It takes up a lot of space and makes the ZenBook Pro Duo somewhat unwieldy, but it's pretty dang cool looking.

Since the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar launched, there's been a lot of sides-taken as to whether it's a useful addition to the laptop or a gimmick. I'm of the opinion that it's incredibly useful for those that use it. For people that don't, I can see why you'd think it's a gimmick. You can really only do one thing with it, which is use it as a mappable shortcut for tools in apps.

The ZenBook Pro Duo functions as a toolbar, a second screen, a screen extender, and it even supports styluses for on-keyboard writing and drawing. It's certainly a hulked out version of a Touch Bar. Difficult to call this thing a gimmick when it can extend your entire screen, or just give you a second screen right there on your lap without you needing to plug anything in. the ScreenPad Plus can even be split in two so you could have two smaller 16:9 ratio screens side-by-side below the larger 15.4-inch main screen.

The problem with the ZenBook Pro Duo (other than the fact that it isn't an Mac) is that it's thick and I don't mean thicc with two Cs. It's almost a full inch thick and it weighs 5.5 pounds. It's not exactly portable. It's more like a desktop replacement, which makes me think, wouldn't it just be better to have a monitor on your desk to use as a second screen? At least with the ZenBook Pro Duo, you get a lot of cool features on that ScreenPad Plus (like app switching, a toolbar, and touch and stylus support). I also like the idea that that second screen is always with you, whether you're sitting on the couch or in your office.

Am I hoping Apple will do something like this to the Touch Bar for the MacBook Pro? Absolutely not. If my laptop has to be that thick to be functional, I'd rather just plug it into a monitor when I need it. I do like what the ZenBook Pro Duo does and if I could justify spending $2,500 on something I just want to play around with, I'd get one. But I've got to save up for that 16-inch MacBook Pro!

Not a member of Kindle Unlimited yet? Here's your chance. Get three months of Amazon's All-You-Can-Read buffet for just $1.99 total. Journaling is something that we should all be doing, as it helps us keep a record of what happens in our daily lives. It's a record of memories, both good and bad, and a way for us to relive those special moments.

Back in the days before digital journaling was possible, we probably kept paper notebooks around for our journaling needs. While nothing quite beats that feeling of ink flowing into the pulp of some high quality paper, it's hard to find exactly what you're looking for if you don't keep a system in check. Plus, your memories are only in one place, and if you lose it, well, you're screwed.

Digital journaling is significantly better than the old paper-and-pen method, and Day One is the best app to handle your digital journaling needs. But if you're new to Day One, it can seem a bit overwhelming at first. Fortunately, as someone who's been using Day One for years, I'm here to help you get the most out of it!

What are you using Day One for?

Before you start to dive into Day One, it's important to consider what you're going to be using the app for. There are many uses for Day One:

• Regular journal to keep all your thoughts
• Photo journal
• Travel journal
• Gratitude journal
• Dream journal
• Health and Fitness log
• Food diary
• Productivity journal
• Work log
• Record and thoughts on books, movies, etc.

As you can see, the possible use cases for Day One are pretty much endless. If you want to keep a record of something, then you can turn it into a journal in Day One. It's flexible and completely customizable to fit your needs.

However, you'll need to be aware of a few things if you're interested in using Day One for multiple journals. There are three levels of Day One accounts: Basic, Plus, and Premium.

Basic is free but limits you to one journal, one photo per entry, unlimited entries, local backup only, exporting, book printing, and Activity Feed on iOS.

Plus is a grandfathered plan only available to Day One 2.0 users between February 4, 2016 and June 27, 2017. Plus includes up to 10 journals, 10 photos per entry, unlimited entries, unlimited syncing through Day One Sync, optional end-to-end encryption, IFTTT integration, and everything else that Basic includes. Users on Plus level do get a discount on Premium, making it $24.99 a year.

Premium lets you get the most bang for your buck, and it runs at $34.99 a year. With Premium, you get unlimited journals, up to 30 photos per entry, the Mac app, unlimited syncing, end-to-end encryption, discounts on book printing, and everything else with Plus.

With these factors in mind, think about how you want to use Day One. If you're fine with just one main journal to keep all of your thoughts and memories in, and limited to just one photo per entry, then Basic should be enough. But if you want more flexibility and better organization for your journals, then consider getting Premium.

I'm a Premium user and I couldn't be happier. I have 10 journals going so far, with my main "Journal" getting the most use with 1950+ entries and 1700+ photos. My main journal holds all of my photos of special events that I want to remember and relive, and I've even got tags for certain people and things, such as my fiancé, holidays, family, and more.

My other nine journals include: a seldom-used dream journal, links to published works I'm proud of and want to remember, extremely personal thoughts relating to family matters, and automated feeds from my social media accounts.

Personally, I've found the ability to keep multiple journals in one place incredibly handy, and it's changed the way I journal for life.

Customize your journal

Whether you're using one main journal or a dozen, Day One has several options for you to customize the app to make it your own.

For one, each journal you create can have its own name and color, so they're all color-coded. Keep in mind that some hues are Premium only, so it's a bonus to having a Premium account.

There's also other omnipresent settings that you're able to change regarding Day One's appearance. These include 15 stylish fonts and various sizes, turning the first line into the entry title, linking Twitter @names, showing maps in the reading view, and even including your step count.

If you have a Plus or Premium account, the Activity Feed is a great feature to utilize. When you view it, you're able to quickly create new entries based on your activities from the past six weeks from photos, calendars, location history, and social media accounts.

Other advanced settings that you're able to enable include notification reminders to help you maintain a regular journaling schedule, or even remind you of past events.

There are a lot of settings in Day One that let you create the perfectly tailored journaling experience to suit your needs.

Organize with tags

As you start to accumulate entries in your journals, going back and finding an entry you want to relive can be difficult. This is why tags are so incredibly important in keeping everything organized and helping you find what you want.

When you create or edit journal entries, there's a button on the keyboard extension that has a tag icon. Tapping on this brings up your tags, and you're able to create new tags just by typing them in and then click "Next" on the keyboard.

Tags are available for just the current journal, or you can go through tags across all of your journals. The tag popup also displays your most used tags in descending order, and even searches for existing tags as you type one in.

I have grown a mostly organic collection of tags throughout my years of using Day One. I like to use tags for the name of my significant other, family, friends, special events, locations, and whatever else I may need to reference later on. My automated feeds with IFTTT and the like are automatically tagged, making it a bit more chaotic (thousands of tweets and Foursquare Swarm updates), but at least I know that it's tagged and put away without any input from me.

Make use of photo imports

While the traditional form of journaling is basically just writing down your thoughts, one should take advantage of the fact that Day One stores photographic memories too.

When it comes to remembering my time in Day One, I prefer attaching images whenever I can. It helps me see a visual for the day I'm talking about, and whatever memories it brought into my life. That's why I love how Day One chooses to implement adding photos, with a big button on the main view (the other just being a plain entry) when you launch the app.

As you use Day One's photo importer tool, you can see your entire Photo Library, or pick and choose from specific albums. At the bottom it tells you how many more photos you're allowed, depending on your Day One account type.

The best thing when importing photos is the fact that Day One automatically detects any EXIF data on your photos and asks you if you want to use the photo's date and time for your entry, instead of making it to be the present time. I've always found this useful because I often forget to add photos from special events the day of, so adding it later is not a problem since Day One gets the time info.

Day One provides a photo section where you can view every photo that you imported into the app. I enjoy scrolling through this to see all of the great times I've had, even those that may seem insignificant.

Add locations and steps to entries

Another thing that Day One excels at is making sure you remember where you've been in all of your entries. While you may not want your location revealed on social media or other forums that are public, I think a private journal that can be securely encrypted is different.

Each entry can have a location attached to it, and Day One pulls this info from Foursquare, Apple, or you can save frequently visited locales. If you're using the photo importer, the EXIF data should also provide location for you.

Once an entry has location added to it, you can check out where you've been on the Map view. I particularly like this because I've always found it interesting to see all the points you've been to on a map. It's the bigger picture, if you will, and you're able to see where you frequently write or log memories from.

Plus, if you include location on journal entries, you'll also be able to see how the weather was at that particular time as well. Did the weather affect your mood or plans? Having this information available to you is a great way to reflect.

For those who love to keep track of their steps for the day, Day One is able to log this information too. Depending on the time you input for the entry, Day One fetches your step count for that time and adds it in. Just like location and weather, it's another good piece of data to think about as you record your events for the day.

Record your life

Journaling is a great way to keep a daily record of your life, no matter what happens. It may seem a bit insignificant at times, but when you look back at these past moments in the future, you'll be grateful that you did.

Day One is the best journaling app that I've come across, and it's an app that has helped me keep track of all of my best (and worst) moments. It may seem a bit daunting at first, but when you're armed with this guide, Day One becomes an invaluable tool.

How to enable Guided Access on iPhone and iPad

1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap on General.
3. Tap on Accessibility.
4. Tap on Guided Access under the Learning section.

5. Tap the switch to turn on Guided Access.
6. Tap on Passcode Settings.
7. Tap Set Guided Access Passcode and set a passcode.

8. Toggle Accessibility Shortcut to On, which allows you to triple-click the Home button and enter Guided Access at any time.

How to use Guided Access to stop people from snooping your photos

1. Tap Photos from your home screen.
2. Tap the photo you would like to show someone with Guided Access.
3. Triple click the Home button to launch Guided Access.

4. Tap on Options in the bottom left corner to choose whether or not you want to grant access to the Sleep/Wake button, Volume buttons, touch screen, and motion. Tap Done to save your selections. To make sure no one is scrolling through your images, turn off all of your options.
5. Tap on Start at the top of the screen to begin Guided Access.

Whoever you have shown your phone to will no longer be able to scroll through your images until they triple-press the home button 3 times and insert the right access code.
