Here's how you can get set up with your favorite mouse or trackpad with your current iPad or even iPhone.

How to pair a mouse or trackpad to your iPad

The first thing you'll want to do is connect your mouse or trackpad to your iPad. You can also use a wire by plugging it into the iPad port. Here's what you do for pairing a Bluetooth mouse or trackpad, such as the Magic Trackpad 2.

1. Put your mouse or trackpad into pairing mode by following the manufacturer's procedure.
2. Open Settings on your iPad.
3. Tap Bluetooth.
4. Tap your mouse or trackpad under Other Devices.

Your pointing device will now be paired with your iPad.

How to manage pointer settings on iPad

Once you're mouse or trackpad is connected, you can manage some of the available settings.

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap General if Settings doesn't open on that tab.
3. Tap Trackpad or Trackpad & Mouse (depending on what pointer device is connected.

4. Drag the slider to change the tracking speed of your pointing device.
5. Tap the switch next to Natural Scrolling to turn natural scrolling (scroll down by swiping up, scroll up by swiping down, basically, the way scrolling works when you're touching your iPad's screen with your fingers) on or off.

6. Tap the switch next to Tap to Click if it's available to enable or disable that feature. Generally only present for trackpads.
7. Tap the switch next to Two Finger Secondary Click if it's available to enable or disable that feature.

How to enable AssistiveTouch on iPhone and iPad

If you enable AssistiveTouch, you can do even more with your trackpad or mouse. Here's how to get that set up.

1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap Accessibility.
3. Tap Touch under Physical and Motor.

4. Tap AssistiveTouch.
5. Tap the switch next to AssistiveTouch so it's in the green 'on' position.

How to connect a Bluetooth mouse to your iPhone or iPad with AssistiveTouch

You can use a Bluetooth mouse with your iPhone or iPad, as long as it's not an Apple Magic Mouse.

1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap Accessibility.
3. Tap Touch under Physical and Motor.

4. Tap AssistiveTouch.
5. Tap Devices.
6. Tap Bluetooth Devices…

7. Put your Bluetooth mouse into pairing mode.
8. Tap the name of your mouse when it appears on the menu in your iPad.
9. Tap Pair. Your mouse will now connect to your iPad.

Once connected, your mouse should be good to go. You'll see a circular cursor appear on your device's screen. To use the cursor, move your mouse to drag the cursor over something you want to click, then click on your mouse.

Connecting a wired mouse or Magic Trackpad 2

If you want to connect a wired mouse or a Magic Trackpad, it's a simple matter of physically connecting a cable to your iPhone or iPad, whether you use Lightning or USB-C. For example, if you want to connect an Apple Magic Trackpad 2 to your 2021 iPad Pro, you'll need a USB-C-to-Lightning cable, as the Magic Trackpad 2 has a Lightning port.

Once you've connected your pointing device with your iPhone or iPad, you don't need to do anything other than turn AssistiveTouch on.

How to customize the buttons on your pointing device

1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap Accessibility.
3. Tap Touch under Physical and Motor.

4. Tap AssistiveTouch.
5. Tap Devices.
6. Tap the name of your pointing device.

7. Tap the labels reading Button 1, Button 2, etc., to customize what each button does.
8. Tap the action you each button on your pointer to control when it's pressed. The options range from simple actions such as single-tapping to opening the dock. If you have any, you can assign a particular Siri Shortcut to one of your mouse buttons.

9. Tap the name of your pointer device in the upper-left corner of the menu pane.
10. Tap Customize Additional Buttons…

11. Click a button on your mouse to customize its function on iOS or iPadOS.

You can choose from various skin tones, hair colors, and accessories (a list that continues to grow each year) for your Memoji. Once you've customized your Memoji, you'll be able to check out your sticker pack in the Messages app and other places where Memoji stickers can be sent.

1. In an app, such as Messages, that supports Stickers, bring up the keyboard.
2. At the top of the keyboard, tap on the Memoji stickers icon.
3. Tap the + icon.

4. Customize your Memoji with various skin tones, facial features, hair, accessories, and clothing.
5. Once you have finished customizing, tap Done to save your Memoji

Your newly created Memoji will automatically become a sticker pack and can now be found with your other stickers. Additionally, you can tap the ••• icon at any time to edit, delete, or create a new Memoji.

How to send Memoji stickers on iPhone and iPad

Once you've created your Memoji, you can use them the same way you would any sticker pack in the Messages app. And, they're easily accessible from your emoji picker in any almost text field.

They work best in the Messages app, where you can "peel" them off and stick them on a message bubble. But you can also use them in Apple's built-in apps like the Mail and Notes app, as well as the best iPhone apps from third-parties like Twitter and Slack. Pretty much the only place you can't use Memoji stickers is when you're typing into a browser URL or some similar text field.

7. Alternatively, you can tap and hold on a Memoji sticker to lift it and then drag and drop it to stick it onto a particular message. You can also resize and change the angle while dragging it. Note that this only works in the Messages app.

What you need to know

• Slack is ditching support for iOS 13 in its next update.
• Slack users will need iOS 14 or later to use Slack.

Slack has announced that it will no longer support iOS 13 when its next iPhone and iPad app update arrives in the App Store.

Announced via the release notes for a new version of Slack made available in the App Store, the move means that people will need to have iOS 15 or later installed in order to use Slack once the next update rolls around.

Apple released iOS 14 in 2020 and it brought with it support for Home screen widgets, new notifications, and the App Library among other things.

Slack's latest update also includes some new fixes and improvements, including the ability to post messages to a main Slack channel even after they were posted to a thread.

The full rundown of improvements beyond the iOS 13 support situation reads:

• We fixed a host of small bugs around creating messages and lists with Korean characters. What is the proper name for a group of bugs? A bundle? A bandolier? We fixed a benediction of bugs.
• Ever reply to a thread only to realize you should have sent that reply back into the main channel? Us too. That's why you can now retroactively share your threaded messages with the rest of the channel. Just press and hold on the message in question, then select "Send Reply to This Channel" to give it the attention it deserves.
• Menus, begone! Now you can turn that text into a hyperlink by simply highlighting and pasting your URL right on top of it. Same old words with a brand new tappable destination.
• The first time you send someone a direct message, you'll now see their pronouns displayed at the beginning of the conversation. We hope it's a small step that will help foster respect among colleagues.

Slack is perhaps the best iPhone and iPad app for keeping in touch with work colleagues and it's much the same story on the Mac, too. But if you're still using iOS 13, now is the time to upgrade — I'd suggest skipping iOS 14 entirely and going all the way to the latest iOS 15 release, too.

The Maps app for iPhone and iPad includes two unique features worth considering. First, you can keep track of your favorite locations with ease. Second, with guides, you can build lists of local must-see spots and spaces. The features work on the best iPhones and best iPads, including the iPhone 13.

How to create favorite locations on the iPhone and iPad

Favorites in the Maps app are located near the top of the screen. It includes your Home and Work location, when applicable. In addition, under each favorite, you see the amount of time it will take to get to the place from your current location.

To add a location:

1. Tap on the Maps app on the Home screen.
2. Under Favorites, scroll to the right, then tap the + icon.
3. Type in your location in the search box under Add Favorite. For example, you can type in a name or address. You can also tap the Siri icon on the same page to search with your voice. You can also select a location by tapping the **+* for a place under Siri Suggestions.

4. Tap the + to add the location.
5. On the Details page, change the title of the location -- if you want.
6. select the type of location.
7. Change the title of the location -- if you want.

8. Tap Add Person under Share ETA if you want to share your location with someone whenever you're traveling to your favorite site.
9. Select Done at the top right-hand side of the screen to save your Favorite.

To delete favorites:

1. In the Maps app, tap See All next to Favorites.
2. Choose the information icon to the right of the location you want to delete.
3. Tap the Remove favorite at the bottom.

How to create guides in the Maps app

Imagine that you're planning a trip to London and want to identify and save areas of the city you want to visit. By grouping everything in one location, you have a better idea of where the hot spots are before you even arrive at your destination.

To create a guide:

1. Tap on the Maps app on the Home screen.
2. Scroll down, choose + on the left of New Guide under the My Guides section.

3. Type a name for your new guide.
4. Tap Create.

To add locations to a guide:

1. Tap the newly created guide.
2. Select Add a Place.
3. Search for your location to add by typing it into the search box.
4. Tap the + next to the location you want to add.
5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 to add more places to your guide.
6. Tap Done at the top right when you are done adding locations.

Explore your guide's locations:

1. Under your guide, tap on a location to learn more.
2. Tap Flyover, when applicable, to take a closer look at the area.
3. Tap the directions button to find out how to get to the location.
4. On the main location screen, you'll find information pulled from Wikipedia and TripAdvisor, depending on the area's popularity.

To add favorites to your guide and more:

1. From this screen, you can also tap ... at the top.
2. Choose Add to Favorites from the pull-down menu.
3. Or scroll down and choose Report an Issue if there is a problem with the location listing.
4. Or Share to send the location information to others through Messages or Mail, or other apps on your device.

To remove locations from a guide:

1. Tap Edit at the bottom left on a guides page in Maps.
2. Tap the circle to the left of the location you want to delete.
3. Tap Delete at the bottom right to remove the site from your guide.

Most commands don't need confirmation, meaning you speak the command and your iPhone or iPad does the action. If you want, you can require commands to need a confirmation, meaning after you say the command your iPhone or iPad will prompt you to execute the command and require you to either tap execute or say "tap execute" to proceed with the action. You can enable this feature for a ton of commands and it's all on a case by case basis, so you can pick and choose which commands needs this extra confirmation.

Voice Control will type out any text you speak to your phone in a text field but you may use words or slang that it can't understand. Luckily, you can add words to the Voice Control Vocabulary to help your iPhone or iPad understand them, and thus be able to write them out for you.

2. Tap Accessibility.
3. Tap Voice Control.

4. Tap Vocabulary.
5. Tap the + button in the top right hand of your screen.

6. Enter the word you want to add.

4. Tap the Show Hints On/Off switch. When the switch is gray the feature will be disabled.

Using the continuous overlay features in Voice Control, you can display numbers for each tappable part of the current screen display, that way all you have to do to activate something is say a command like "Tap four".

Your iPhone or iPad has to support FaceID for this feature to work, but it does mean that when you're not looking at your device you can speak freely without your iPhone or iPad trying to execute commands.

How to make an archived backup of your iPad

Before you begin, make sure you back up your iPad. While the beta process is fairly straightforward, any time you make any significant change to your device you risk problems. And with your personal data, it's always — always! — better to be safe than sorry. Even if you back up every night, you'll want to make sure it's absolutely up-to-date.

1. Plug iPad into your Mac or Windows PC.
2. Launch iTunes.
3. Click on the or iPad icon in the menu bar when it appears.
4. Make sure backup is set to This Computer. (And enable Encrypted backup — it's worth it!)
5. Click on Back Up Now. (Click on Encrypt Backup and add a password — you want the security.)
6. Back up Apps, if asked.
   
   
   

7. Press Command, to open Preferences. (Or go to iTunes in the menu bar and click on Preferences.
8. Click on the Devices tab.
9. Control-click on your Backup and choose Archive.
   
   
   

Archiving will prevent your current backup from being overwritten by an iPadOS backup in the future, should you want to revert for any reason.

How to install the iPadOS beta using iTunes

1. Go to developer.apple.com on your Mac.
2. Click on the "Discover" tab.
3. Click one of the operating system buttons in the bar near the top of the screen.
4. Click Download.
5. Log in with your developer account's username and password.
6. Go to the iPadOS beta section and Download Restore Images.
7. Click on the iPadOS restore image that matches the device onto which you plan to install it.
8. Click Applications at the top of the list of beta software.
9. Click the Download button next to Xcode 11. Wait for Xcode to finish downloading.
10. Open iTunes from your Dock or Applications folder.
11. Connect your iPhone to your Mac.
12. Click the iPad icon that appears in iTunes. You may be prompted to enter your iPad's password on your tablet.
13. While holding down the Option key on your Mac's keyboard, click Check for Update.
14. Click on Downloads in the sidebar, or whichever location you downloaded the iPadOS restore image to.
15. Click on the iPadOS restore image.
16. Click Open.

iTunes will now install iPadOS onto your iPad. This process will take some time, and you shouldn't unplug your iPad from your Mac until the update is complete.

How to install the iPadOS beta using a profile

Before you do anything else, make sure you have a developer account with Apple — without a paid account, you won't be able to download any non-Xcode betas.

Thanks to Apple's configuration profile, you can download iPadOS betas directly on your iPad, no Mac required! (You can still install the iPadOS beta on your iPad by connecting your device to iTunes, but you'll need to be running the Xcode beta first. The method listed below is generally a lot faster, with fewer wires.)

1. Go to developer.apple.com on your iPad.
2. Tap on the "Discover" tab.
3. Tap on of the operating system buttons in the bar near the top of the screen.
4. Tap Download.
5. Log in with your developer account's username and password.
6. Go to the iPadOS 13 beta section and tap the download. This will start the process of downloading the iPadOS beta software profile on your iPad.
7. Tap Close.
8. Open Settings.
9. Tap Profile Downloaded.
10. Tap Install. You may need to enter your Passcode.
11. Agree to the Consent form and press Install once in the upper right corner, and once at the bottom of the screen.
12. Press Restart to apply the changes to your iPad.

To install the iPadOS beta, you'll need to visit Software Update on your iPad once you have the profile loaded.

1. Launch Settings from your Home screen, tap on General, then tap on Software Update.
2. Once the update appears, tap on Download and Install.
3. Enter your Passcode.

4. Tap Agree to the Terms and Conditions.
5. Tap Agree again to confirm.

Your iPad will reboot to install iPadOS 13. There will be a couple of progress bars going across the screen. Sit tight, and let everything finish.

How to get started with iPadOS beta

Once your iPad reboots, it'll be running iPadOS the latest beta. There's a brief bit of setup you'll need to go through, however, as the system will have changed enough that it'll need your login to complete the update.

1. Tap Continue.
2. Enter your Apple ID password. iCloud settings will update, so give it a minute.
3. Tap Get Started.

Once that's done, you'll be on the Home screen and ready to rock the latest iPadOS beta.

• Apple released iOS 13.6.1 yesterday, fixing three specific bugs.
• One of those bugs saw some users experience a green iPhone screen issue.
• The update's release notes claim to have fixed it.

Apple released iOS 13.6.1 to the public yesterday and while it wasn't the biggest update we've seen, it did fix three particular bugs. One of them relates to the weird green screen issue some people were experiencing with their iPhones.

According to the iOS 13.6.1 release notes, there were three bugs squashed this time around, but it's the middle one that we're most interested in here.

• Addresses an issue where unneeded system data files might not be automatically deleted when available storage is low
• Fixes a thermal management issue that caused some displays to exhibit a green tint
• Fixes an issue where Exposure Notifications could be disabled for some users

When we last wrote about the screen tint issue nobody had any idea what was causing it, although it seemed to have been introduced alongside the iOS 13.4.1 update. It's taken a couple of months, but Apple now seems to have gotten to the bottom of it!

Users seem to be experiencing severe battery drain issues in the latest iteration of iOS, 13.5.1.

As reported by ZDNet:

The report mentions iOS 13.5.1 specifically, noting issues of batteries draining faster than usual, an iPhone heating up, and a higher-than-usual 'Screen Off' activity reading (more than an hour) in the Battery Settings report.

Apple's own support forums are actually littered with complaints of battery drain in iOS 13.5 as well. One thread in particular has gained significant traction, with users noticing high background activity.

The usual fixes, such as disabling Background App Refresh might help alleviate the problem. Thankfully, Apple seems to have fixed the issue in iOS 13.6, which beta users report is much-improved on the current version.

As the report notes, the 13.5.1 update was released to fix both the Unc0ver jailbreak, but not several issues users had been complaining of including bugs, MP4 playback not working, and more.

• BMW has updated its BMW Connected app.
• The update adds support for Apple's CarKey feature.
• The BMW 540i will be the first model to support digital car keys.

BMW is ahead of schedule and ready to support Apple's digital car key.

Reported by MacRumors, BMW has released an update to its BMW Connected app that adds support for Apple's new digital car key feature. The update will allow BMW customers with a compatible model to use their iPhone as a digital car key to unlock their car.

According to the release notes, the BMW Digital Key for the iPhone will allow customers to not only lock and unlock their car by holding the phone near the door handle but start it by placing the iPhone in the smartphone tray as well. You can also share your key to give access to your car to others, but it is limited to five people.

BMW says that the feature will be supported in the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, X5, X6, X7, X5M, X6M and Z4 models, but that the car must be manufactured after July 1st, 2020 in order for the feature to be built in. They did not mention if previous models will be able to be upgraded to support the feature.

Apple's CarKey feature is supported on the iPhone XR, XS, and later, as well as on the Apple Watch Series 5.

How to make an archived backup of your iPhone

Before you begin, make sure you back up your iPhone. While the beta process is fairly straightforward, any time you make any significant change to your device you risk problems. And with your personal data, it's always — always! — better to be safe than sorry. Even if you back up every night, you'll want to make sure it's absolutely up-to-date.

1. Plug iPhone or into your Mac or Windows PC.
2. Launch iTunes.
3. Click on the iPhone or icon in the menu bar when it appears.
4. Make sure backup is set to This Computer. (And enable Encrypted backup — it's worth it!)
5. Click on Back Up Now. (Click on Encrypt Backup and add a password — you want the security.)
6. Back up Apps, if asked.
   
   
   

7. Press Command, to open Preferences. (Or go to iTunes in the menu bar and click on Preferences.
8. Click on the Devices tab.
9. Control-click on your Backup and choose Archive.
   
   
   

Archiving will prevent your current backup from being overwritten by an iOS 13 backup in the future, should you want to revert for any reason.

How to register your account for the iOS 13 public beta

If you've already joined an Apple public beta in the past, you shouldn't need to register again for iOS 13; simply sign in with the same Apple ID. If you've never joined a public beta before, you'll start by signing up with your Apple ID.

1. Go to beta.apple.com on the iPhone you want to enroll in the beta.
2. Tap on Sign up to get started. (If you've already signed up for a previous public beta, tap on Sign in and skip to our "How to enroll your device" section below.)
3. Enter you Apple ID email address and password.
4. Tap Sign in.
5. Tap Accept to agree to the terms and conditions.

Once you're signed up and signed in, it's time to start downloading.

How to enroll your iPhone in the iOS 13 public beta

Unlike regular iOS updates, where you just tap and start downloading, Apple is using configuration profiles to validate devices for the iOS 13 public beta. Here's how to install it.

Note: If you've been on a previous iOS public beta, you may need to remove the previous beta profile before installing the iOS 13 version. You can do so by going to Settings > General > Profile, selecting the iOS Beta Software Profile, and pressing Delete Profile.

1. Go to beta.apple.com, if you're not there already.
2. Tap the iOS tab, if it's not highlighted already.
3. Tap on Download profile.
4. Tap on Install in the upper right corner.
5. Enter your Passcode.
6. Tap on Install, this time to consent to the beta agreement. (Read it: There are risks to any beta.)
7. Tap on Install at the bottom to confirm. (Yes, you need to be really sure.)
8. Tap on Restart to reboot your device.

Once your iPhone has finished rebooting, it should start to download iOS 13 automatically. From this point on, the process is the same as any other iOS update.

How to install the iOS 13 public beta

To install the iOS 13 beta, you'll need to visit Software Update on your iPhone.

1. Launch Settings from your Home screen, tap on General, then tap on Software Update.
2. Once the update appears, tap on Download and Install.
3. Enter your Passcode.

4. Tap Agree to the Terms and Conditions.
5. Tap Agree again to confirm.

Your iPhone will reboot to install iOS 13. There will be a couple of progress bars going across the screen. Sit tight, and let everything finish.

How to get started with iOS 13 public beta

Once your iPhone reboots, it'll be running iOS 13. There's a brief bit of setup you'll need to go through, however, as the system will have changed enough that it'll need your login to complete the update.

1. Tap Continue.
2. Enter your Apple ID password. iCloud settings will update, so give it a minute.
3. Tap Get Started.

Once that's done, you'll be on the Home screen and ready to rock iOS 13.

Voice Control is a new accessibility feature coming to iOS 13 that lets you speak commands to your iPhone or iPad to do just about anything. From launching apps, adjusting volume, editing text, rebooting your iPhone or iPad, and many more commands, you can do it all with just your voice in iOS 13. Here's every command you can use with Voice Control.

Apple occasionally offers updates to iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS as closed developer previews or public betas. While the betas contain new features, they also contain pre-release bugs that can prevent the normal use of your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Mac, and are not intended for everyday use on a primary device. That's why we strongly recommend staying away from developer previews unless you need them for software development, and using the public betas with caution. If you depend on your devices, wait for the final release.

What's new in Voice Control in iOS 14

While iOS 14 is still brand new (and only available via the developer beta right now), there are a few new goodies with Voice Control in iOS and iPadOS. There are a few new commands, which we've included in the list below. Any new commands will be labeled with an asterisk to denote they are new to the iOS 14 beta.

Basic Navigation

When it comes to navigating your iPhone or iPad, these commands will help you get around to different screens and apps and help you go through menus and lists.

Overlays

Overlays label the actionable items on the screen with numbers, names, or even a grid so its easier to identify the item on the screen you want to interact with.

Basic Gestures

These are commands that can help you input gestures as if you were swiping your fingers, and can accomplish a ton of different tasks.

Advanced Gestures

Some of the more complicated gestures your iPhone or iPad can also be performed using Voice Control.

Dictation

Of course, Voice Control can help you type in any sort of message field. You can even insert emoji and the date into conversation easily.

Text Navigation

If you're writing long-form — a note, email, etc. — you can navigate around your text by using these commands.

Text Selection

If you're trying to select words and or phrases in your text, emails, notes, or another form of writing on your iPhone and iPad, these are the commands that will help you out.

Text Editing

Copying, pasting, cutting, and replacing text are just some of the text editing options Voice Control can help you out with.

Text Deletion

If you ever need to delete a word, sentences, paragraph, or any other part of your writing, these are the Voice Control commands you can use.

Device commands

Device commands all you to perform actions that your iPhone and iPad can do, such as adjusting volume, rotating the screen, and even taking screenshots.

Accessibility

Of course, Voice Control can help you turn on and off all the Accessibility features.

• Apple has released install base figures ahead of WWDC.
• The numbers show that iOS 13 is now installed on 81% of all iPhones.
• iOS 13 has also now been installed on 73% of all iPads.

Ahead of WWDC next week, Apple has released an updated set of numbers concerning the install base of iOS 13 for the iPhone and iPad.

Posted on the Apple Developer website, Apple has announced that iOS 13 is running on 92% of all iPhones that have been released in the last four years. Another 7% od iPhones are running iOS 12 with just 2% of devices still running an earlier version of iOS.

When it comes to all iPhones currently being used in the world, iOS 13 is installed on 81% of them. Another 13% are running iOS 12, and 6% are running an older version of the operating system.

For iPad, iPadOS is now running on 93% of all devices released in the last four years. Only 5% of iPads are still running iOS 12, and just 1% are still running iOS 11 or earlier.

Now, 73% of all active iPads globally are running iPadOS. Another 16% are running iOS 12 and 11% are still running an earlier version of iOS.

Apple is set to announce the next version of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS at WWDC on Monday. The keynote is set to kick off at 10:00 AM Pacific Time and will be streamed on the TV app, YouTube, and Apple's website.

What you need to know

• Developers have found new features in the iOS 13.6 beta.

Developers have been taking a look at the new iOS 13.6 beta since this morning and there have already been a few notable updates discovered for iPhone owners.

Reported by MacRumors, iOS 13.6 will give users more granular control on how software updates to iOS occur on their devices. While the current version of iOS automatically downloads and installs software updates overnight, users will now be able to turn this feature off in multiple ways.

MacRumors also reports that Apple has added a new Symptoms section to the Apple Health app. Users will now be able to record symptoms they are experiencing such as appetite changes, chest tightness or pain, and congestion.

It is not yet clear when iOS 13.6 will be available for release to the public.

• iPhone and iPad users will now be able to use physical devices to natively authenticate.
• Apple has supported the technology on iOS since December.

The iPhone has supported physical security keys for a while now, but a new update today brings NFC and newer technology support to Google's own apps on iOS.

Reported by AppleInsider, Google has updated its apps and websites to work with the latest W3C WebAuthn implementation for two-factor authentication.

Users will now be able to use physical devices to natively authenticate with Google apps and services on the iPhone and iPad. Before, users were required to use Google's Titan key with the Google Smart Lock app installed on their device.

Apple has supported the newest W3C WebAuthn implementation for two-factor authentication on iOS since December of last year.

When Apple announced DualShock 4 and Xbox One S controller support for Apple TV during the WWDC 2019 keynote, many of us probably thought that it was just for the tvOS. However, as it turns out, support for DualShock 4 and Xbox One S controllers is also coming in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 as well, so you can use your favorite console controller with your iPhone or iPad. Getting it paired up is a breeze as well.

How to pair your DualShock 4 controller

1. Launch Settings on your iPhone or iPad.

2. Tap on Bluetooth.

3. On your DualShock 4 controller, put it into pairing mode by holding down the PlayStation and Share button for several seconds until the light starts flashing white.

4. The DualShock 4 controller should now appear under Other Devices in your Bluetooth device list.
5. Tap on DualShock 4 Controller in the list to pair it.Source: iMore

Now that your DualShock 4 controller is connected, you can play any game that supports MFi controllers with your PlayStation 4 DualShock 4 controller instead. You can check the controller's battery level in the Battery widget.

How to pair your Xbox One S controller

1. Launch Settings on your iPhone or iPad.

2. Tap on Bluetooth.

3. On your Xbox One S controller, power it on by pressing the Xbox button.
4. Put your Xbox One S controller into pairing mode by holding down the Connect button on the top for about three seconds.
5. The Xbox One S controller should show up in the Other Devices as Xbox Wireless Controller.
6. Tap on Xbox Wireless Controller to pair.

Again, once your Xbox One S controller is paired to your iOS 13 device, you'll be able to play any game with it as long as the game has controller support. You can also check the battery level for your controller in the Battery widget.

How to unpair your DualShock 4 or Xbox One S controller

1. Launch Settings on your iPhone or iPad.

2. Tap on Bluetooth.

3. Find your DualShock 4 or Xbox One S controller in the device list, then tap on the "i" button.

4. Select Forget this device.
   • You can also just disconnect it to conserve controller battery.

5. Confirm the unpairing by tapping on OK.

6. If you want to use the controller again, you'll need to follow the pairing instructions above to get it connected again.

What about original Xbox One controllers?

Apple mentioned specifically that iOS 13 will only work with the Xbox One S controller because it has built-in Bluetooth support without an adapter. The original Xbox One controllers needed an adapter for Bluetooth connectivity, which will not work with iOS 13.

We're very happy to finally see iPhone and iPad support for major console controllers coming this fall, as most of us already have these in our home and don't need to go out and buy a proprietary mobile controller just to play some games. Maybe one day we'll even see support for Nintendo's Pro Controller, but until then, we'll get our mobile game on with our DualShock 4 and Xbox One S controllers.

A major bug in iOS 13.5 is preventing users from opening apps.

According to 9to5Mac:

From the error message, users can only go to the App Store or select cancel. The report states that there is no pattern to which apps are affected, but that the error message relates to Apple's iCloud Family Sharing feature. The report further notes:

It seems that right now there is no workaround or fix for this, or whether this is a cloud/server-side problem, or whether this is indeed a bug built into iOS 13.5, which would require a patch.

What's new with iOS 13

iOS 13.5 is now available for iPhone. This release provides a new method to unlock your Face ID iPhone faster with a shortcut to enter your passcode quickly. It also introduces the Exposure Notification API to support COVID-19 contact tracing for public health authorities and makes changes to the display of Group FaceTime calls, as well as bug fixes and other improvements.

iOS 13.3 is now available for iPhone. In this release, there are new parental controls for Screen Time, giving parents even more control over who their children can call, FaceTime, or iMessage. Parents can now also manage the contact list that appears on their children's devices. The update also brings in a new layout for Apple News+ stories from The Wall Street Journal and other leading newspapers. Other improvements include creating a new video clip when trimming a video in Photos, support for NFC, USB, and Lighting FIDO2-compliant security keys in Safari. There's a fix for a Mail issue where new messages would not download, and it addresses an issue that could cause incorrect characters to display in Messages and duplication of messages in Exchange accounts. There are plenty of other bug fixes and other improvements in iOS 13.3.

iOS 13.2.3 is now available for everyone. This includes several bug fixes, including a glitch with system search in Mail, FIles, and Notes. It also fixes an issue where photos, links, and other attachments may not display correctly in the Messages detail view. iOS 13.2.3 also fixes an issue where apps may not be downloading content in the background. An issue with Mail that was preventing the app from getting new messages has also been resolved, as well as an issue with failing to quote the original message content in Exchange accounts.

It's official; iOS 13.1 is here! Fresh off the heels of the iOS 13 release, iOS 13.1 is a more stable and improved build of Apple's iPhone software and it adds a few features that weren't in the original launch, like Share my ETA in Maps, Automations for Shortcuts, and more!

September 19, 2019: iOS 13 is available for iPhones.

Apple has stated that iOS 13.1, which is currently in beta, will be available the very next week on September 24. For iPads, there is a separate software version dubbed iPadOS 13, which will also be available for everyone on September 24.

iOS 13 is a huge release that is packed with a lot of new capabilities and performance improvements. Everything is faster, from unlocking with Face ID (30 percent faster) and app downloads will be 50 percent smaller, and updates 60 percent smaller. Apps will launch twice as fast in iOS 13, and much more.

Everything is faster

With iOS 13, there are a lot of speed improvements overall. Unlocking with Face ID will be 30 percent faster. App downloads will be 50 percent smaller, with updates being 60 percent smaller as well. Apps will launch twice as fast.

Dark Mode

Dark Mode is finally arriving in iOS 13. The dynamic Dark Mode means dynamic wallpapers that change between light and dark when the sun sets or rises, widgets will also have a dark theme as well. Messages, Photos, Notes, and other native apps will come with built-in support for Dark Mode.

The keyboard will also be dark themed, and there is swipe support, called "Quick Path," for faster typing.

The Notes app has a refined texture and is more of a dark gray color, rather than straight black, in Dark Mode. Photos will look sharper than ever with the black background instead of white.

Dark Mode is also available in Apple Music. As a bonus, when you play music, lyrics will have time-synced lyrics so you can sing along or follow the song easier than ever before.

Reminders reimagined

Reminders also gets a total rework in iOS 13. As you type in reminders, the app will try and guess when to remind you. Siri will which words you want and make them actionable. If there are any names in the reminder, it will remind you about them in Messages.

Apple Maps

Apple has been hard at work with Apple Maps. The entire US will get these new maps by the end of 2019, with other "select" countries next year.

These new maps are much more detailed with building layouts always visible, similar to Flyover but for everywhere. Users can also have a Favorites row on the launch screen, as well as "Collections" for organizing your favorites, sharing lists with friends, and more.

There is also a button that lets you "look around" on the map. It's essentially Google Street View, but built-in natively to Apple Maps. Moving around in this view is also much more smooth than Google Street View. Apple also shared that there will be a junction view in China, as well as ETA sharing for everyone.

With iOS 13.1, the Share ETA feature is now enabled in Maps. The feature is pretty simple and useful; when you start a route in Maps, there will be a Share ETA button at the bottom of your screen. When you tap it you'll be given a list of your recent contacts, plus the options to go through your contact list, and with a couple of taps, send them your ETA through messages.

AirDrop

With iOS 13.1 activates the U1 chip in the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max for AirDrop. This means by pointing from one U1 chip device to another, you should be able to AirDrop files.

Privacy and Security

iOS 13 brings a lot of new privacy and security features. There will be system-wide location tracking protection, or give an app permission to use location "just once." If you give it permission to always use your location, iOS will provide you with detailed reports.

Apple will add "Sign in with Apple." This uses Face ID to start a new account without revealing any personal information. While apps can request information, you can hide things like email, and Apple will create a random email that will forward to your actual email. These random emails can be disabled if need be.

This "Sign in with Apple" will also work on the web.

HomeKit

HomeKit Secure Video is Apple's solution to cloud services that analyze video. With this, Apple will analyze video data locally, and then encrypt it and upload it to iCloud. All iCloud accounts will get 10 days of this service for free, and this will not count against your storage limits.

Brands like Logitech will be supporting this new feature, along with others.

HomeKit support is also coming to routers. This means that it will "firewall off" accessories. Brands like Linksys, Eero, and Spectrum.

Messages

Names and photos are shared more easily with iOS 13. So when you text someone, they'll automatically get your name and photo.

Memoji come with more options, including makeup and accessories, such as monocles, hats, and AirPods. All of your Memoji also get a sticker pack that you can use in Messages, but they'll also be built-in to the keyboard as emoji so you can use your new Memoji system-wide in any app.

The Memoji Stickers are now supported in any device with an A9 chip or later, so it's more accessible than ever.

Camera and Photos

Camera and Photos get a lot of new features in iOS 13.

December 9, 2019: The latest version of iOS 13.2.3 adds new video recording controls inside the Camera app. Just tap on the numbers in the top right corner to cycle through available video recording resolutions and frame rates.

There are new Portrait Lighting effects, so you can increase or decrease the intensity of the light (think of moving actual lights closer or further from the subject).

Photos has a new photo editing interface. Just tap and drag for adjustments, and iOS 13 adds new editing tools like noise reduction.

This new photo editing interface also applies to video. And for the first time ever, you can rotate your videos.

There's now a new way to navigate through your photos in iOS 13. The device will also use machine learning to remove duplicates and clutter. This is fantastic if you often have your Camera Roll cluttered with things like screenshots and receipts.

A "Photos" tab now appears in the Photos app, which is the new way to browse through your images. Pinch-to-zoom is still supported, along with a scrubber for years, months, days. Videos play directly in the browse view, as well as Live Photos.

In Months, everything is organized by event and month, with large thumbnails that can also play video. Years will have even bigger thumbnails.

AirPods

Siri will now be able to read incoming messages, and you can respond directly with the AirPods. You no longer need to say "Hey Siri" to reply, and this works with any app that supports SiriKit.

Find My app

The new Find My app combines Find My Friends and Find My iPhone into a single app. This app will also be able to find offline devices. This is able to be done because each Apple device creates a secure Bluetooth beacon. Apple then creates an end-to-end encrypted mesh network of Apple devices to locate your offline device.

ARKit 3 is called RealityKit. With RealityKit, you will be able to do photorealistic rendering, environment and camera effects, and even motion capture.

Apple released the iOS 13.5 beta today, and some developers have noticed a nice benefit with the update that deals with how you unlock your iPhone.

For all of us with an iPhone that has Face ID, we know how much faster and more convienient the technology is than its predeccesor, Touch ID. It's a fantastic technology that makes unlocking our phones, entering passwords, and paying with Apple Pay so much easier.

However, all of us also know that Face ID is becoming a problem for many of us during the pandemic. WIth the use of marks while in public being recommended by the government and health agencies around the world, Face ID is struggling to adapt to our new way of living.

The camera is having an issue in being able to authenicate a users face when they are wearing a mask, and failing a coupld of times before finally prompting users to enter their passcode or password. Thankfully, Apple has appeared to have created a workaround to this issue.

Some users who have the iOS 13.5 beta installed have noticed that, if they are wearing a mask, the iPhone will recognize that they are and skip past Face ID directly to passcode authentication. This cuts down the amount of time that users will have to wait to authenticate.

It is unknown if Apple is working on a solution for Face ID that would actually be able to authenicate a user with a mask with enough accuracy for the company to feel confident they are not forgoing security for the sake of convienence. The company is also rumored to be working on a version of Touch ID that would work underneath the display, but it is not known if and when that technology will be available on the iPhone.

Apple and Google are set to release the API that will allow healthcare agencies to add contact tracing to their apps this Friday. In preparation for that launch, Apple has added the ability for users to turn on the feature in the latest beta.

Spotted by Gulherme Rambo on Twitter, Apple has added "COVID-19 Exposure Notifications" to the iPhone in the latest iOS 13.5 beta.

The feature says that, if turned on, it will begin to share your IDs with nearby devices as well as collect theirs. Any apps you authorize will then be able to notify you if you may have been exposed to the virus.

For those who have the iOS 13.5 beta installed, they can turn on the feature by navigating to Settings > Privacy > Health > COVID-19 Exposure Notifications.

Apple and Google are expected to make the API available to developers on May 1st, so we should expect iOS 13.5 to come out relatively soon to align with health agencies who want to start their contact tracing programs using the companies' technology.

A new report from Vice details two new security vulnerabilities in iOS 13. Zuk Avraham, the founder of ZecOps, said that a few of their customers were targeted with a with two zero-day exploits in iOS 13 last year.

The first was what is known as a remote zero-click, meaning that anyone on the internet could be targeted and infected without knowing about it. According to Avraham, this exploit was used by bad actors to target "VIPs, executive management across multiple industries, individuals from Fortune 2000 companies, as well as smaller organizations such as MSSPs."

The second exploit found in iOS 13 allowed hackers to send an email to the default Mail app on iOS 13 that would open vulnerability and allow the hacker to execute code on the device. They would then delete the emails to cover their tracks.

After ZecOps verified the exploits, they reported them to Apple at the end of March. Thankfully, Apple was quick to respond and patched the vulnerabilities in the latest iOS beta. That update will come to all iPhone owners in the near future.

The kind of vulnerabilities found by ZecOps is targeted exploits and not mass vulnerabilities affecting a wide range of users, according to the report.

iOS security duo Mysk has confirmed that a problem that allowed popular iPhone and iPad apps to snoop around your iOS clipboard has not been fixed in iOS 13.4.

In a blog post on March 10 Mysk detailed the following revelation:

Your iOS clipboard, also known as the pasteboard, is where information you copy and paste is stored whilst you're using. As such it could include any information you might copy or paste such as a phone number, a message from a friend, a password or a credit card number.

We caught up with Mysk following the release of iOS 13.4, and they confirmed that the issue has not been solved within iOS by Apple. Say stated that testing had revealed that Apple hadn't changed anything to minimize the risk of snooping, not even blocking widgets from accessing the clipboard. Whilst this is disconcerting, some other developers have picked up on the issue and are working from their end to solve it.

In a tweet, developer 10percent stated to a confused user who asked about snooping the following:

Mysk also stated that "we know for sure" that Google's Mobile Ad SDK is one of the libraries causing issues. Until recently, Google stated that this was used to help developers debug the integration of the SDK into their apps, Google fixed this in version 7.44.0, released last year.

Wilander says Apple's new updates have also solved "cross-site request forgeries" and that all script-writeable storage will now expire after seven days as client-side cookies do.

As the coronavirus continues to disrupt businesses across the world, many of us are relying on working from home right now. For some, the Personal Hotspot on their iPhone or iPad can be a useful or even critical feature to have at the ready if you need to connect your Mac to the internet and don't have a WiFi connection handy.

Unfortunately, it sounds like some users are experiencing issues with the feature. Reported by MacRumors, Apple reached out to its Authorized Service Providers to notify them that they may see customers experiencing a problem when trying to use Personal Hotspot on iOS 13 or iPadOS 13.

According to the internal document, Apple informed its partners that users may find they are unable to connect a device to their iPhone or iPad's hotspot or experience frequent disconnection while trying to use the feature. Customers may also have issues with overall data performance when using their device as a hotspot.

Unfortunately, it does not sound like there is a quick fix for those who are having the issue. Apple is instructing service providers to use the age-old IT trick and turn Personal Hotspot off and back on.

The problem appears to be a software issue with the current version of iOS 13 for iPhone and iPad, and will hopefully be cleared up when Apple updates users to iOS 13.4.

The iOS 13.4 beta has brought to light some interesting new features, such as the new "CarKey" feature that will allow iPhone and Apple Watch owners to unlock and start their NFC-enabled cars as well as share access to their vehicle through iMessage.

Today, 9to5Mac uncovered yet another interesting feature in the newest beta for the iPhone. Within the iOS 13.4 beta exists evidence that indicates Apple is working on an Internet Recovery feature for operating system.

Currently, if you have an iPhone or iPad that needs to be recovered, you have to hook it up to a Mac or PC. While this used to work fine, more and more people are buying just an iPhone or just an iPad. As iOS only users increase, it makes sense that Apple would build in the ability to recover those devices without the need for a laptop or desktop computer.

As 9to5Mac notes, this new feature could be even more critical for devices like the Apple Watch or HomePod, which currently have to be taken to an Apple Store in order to be recovered as they have no external connectors for users to recover them at home.

The feature, called "OS Recovery", seems to indicate that users will be able to restore their iPhone, iPad, and other Apple devices over the air and without the need to physically hook it up to a Mac or PC. There are also hints that some devices may be able to be recovered by hooking one up to another, for example an iPhone to an iPad.

The feature will most likely have a lot of the same characteristic as the Mac, which has enjoyed internet recovery for a long time now. If you need to recover your Mac you can do so by downloading the operating system and restoring your data through iCloud or a Time Machine backup without depending on another device to do so.

Today Apple released the first beta version of iOS 13.4 for developers. In addition to some of the performance improvements and bug fixes that are expected, a new feature has been discovered that might take Apple's experience with the car to another level.

Reported by 9to5Mac, the iOS 13.4 beta contains references to a 'CarKey' API. This feature would apparently allow users to lock, unlock, and even start their vehicle with an iPhone or Apple Watch. According to the system files, the feature will work with any car that supports NFC, and users would simply hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near the car in order to unlock it.

You won't even have to authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode, as long as you have "Express Mode" enabled. This is similar to Apple's "Express Transit Mode" which allows users to pay at contactless subway terminals without having to authenticate their iPhone or Apple Watch. If you did want to authenticate every time, however, it seems that Apple is allows users to turn "Express Mode" off in the Wallet app.

To take things even further, it seems that Apple is going to allow users to share their 'CarKey' with other people. You'll be able to share your key with friends, family members, and whomever else you trust to have access to your car.

9to5Mac reports that Apple is already working with multiple car manufacturers to bring CarKey to compatible vehicles, but the feature will most likely not be available until iOS 13.4 becomes public. After that, it'll be up to car manufacturers to make their cars compatible with the iPhone and Apple Watch as a digital key.

Apple has updated the App Store support page on its Developer website with new numbers highlighting iOS and iPadOS rates for its customers.

According to the information that was pulled as of January 27, 2020, iOS 13 is now running well into the majority of active iPhones today. Per the support page, "77% of all devices introduced in the last four years use iOS 13." This means that over three-quarters of customers who own the iPhone 11 and, all the way back to the iPhone 7, have already updated to iOS 13. Only seventeen percent of this group of customers still run iOS 12, with six percent still running an even earlier version of iOS.

When branching out to cover all currently active iPhones, "70% of all devices use iOS 13." So, no matter what iPhone someone may be using, over two-thirds of them are running Apple's latest software. Twenty-three percent of iPhones are running iOS 12, and only seven percent are running an earlier version of Apple's software for the iPhone.

When it comes to iPad, "79% of all devices introduced in the last four years use iPadOS." This covers anything from the latest iPad, iPad Air, and iPad Pro all the way back to the original iPad Pro. Of this group of customers, nineteen percent are still using iOS 12, and an impressive two percent are still using an older version of iOS.

When Apple branches this out to cover all active iPads, "57% of all devices use iPadOS," meaning that half of the iPads being used today are using the most up-to-date version of Apple's software for the tablet. Twenty-seven percent of customers are still on iOS 12, and only sixteen-percent are using an even older version.

Apple has always been the one to beat when it comes to mobile software adoption. iOS has far outperformed Android when it comes to adoption rates amongst its customers due to Android's current fragmentation. Google has recently begun work to fix this issue but, at least for now, developers are sure to find a more stable home with iOS when it comes to building the latest features and having the majority customers be able to enjoy them.

Elcomsoft's iOS Forensic Toolkit allows users who purchase it to perform physical and logical acquisition of iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices. It can be used to image device file systems and extract passwords, encryption keys, and data. Elcomsoft affirms that it cannot and will not help to unlock iOS devices, but that it is often possible to extract data from devices without unlocking them. In particular, Apple devices with a bootrom vulnerability that has been exploited by the checkra1n jailbreak can have some of their system files extracted even if you don't know the passcode.

This also works if a device has been disabled after a password has been entered incorrectly 10 times, as long as Erase data isn't enabled. In terms of the data that can be extracted:

Elcomsoft says it will continue to work in chekra1n integration and checkm8 within its tool. It also says that iOS acquisition by jailbreaking is currently the only method to get data, but that it's not "forensically sound" as it alters the content of the file system. Of course, jailbreaking itself is also risky. They conclude by saying:

• A bug is allowing kids to bypass parental controls on iOS 13.3.
• A child with Communication Limits on can still add unknown numbers to their address book.
• This allows them to call, text, or FaceTime with anyone.

The Communication Limits feature was released in iOS 13.3, allowing parents to prevent their kids from talking to anyone not in their contact list. According to a new report by CNBC, there is a bug that is allowing kids to bypass that parental control.

The outlet found that if an unknown number sends a text message to a child's device that has the feature turned on, the child is still given a prompt to add the number to their address book, if the contacts are not stored in iCloud by default. This would then allow the child to send messages, call, or FaceTime with the unknown number without the knowledge of the parent. If Communication Limits was working correctly, the parent would have to enter a PIN to allow the child to add the number to the address book.

Kids are also able to get around this parental control if they have an Apple Watch paired to the iPhone. They are still able to use Siri to call or text any number regardless of if it is in their address book, even if the Communication Limits feature is turned on.

Apple has responded to the CNBC report, saying that a permanent fix to this bug will be coming in a future software release.

If you want to check and see if your child's phone has their contacts set to iCloud by default, follow the instructions below:

1. Open the Settings app.
2. Tap Contacts.
3. Tap Default Account.
4. Select iCloud.

There is one workaround to this bug if you do not and do not want to have iCloud as the default contacts option, and that is by turning on the Downtime feature. According to CNBC, turning on Downtime prevented a child's phone from being able to add an unknown number to their address book.

Apple has not specified what exact update of iOS will include the fix for the bug, or when that update can be expected.

Memoji stickers have previously lived to the left of the emojis in their own keyboard, and it was a constant source of frustration for anyone who just wanted to send that winky smiley face. But now we can banish the Memoji stickers for good.

Doing that is deed easy, Once you've updated your iPhone to iOS 13.3, head into the Settings app and tap General followed by Keyboard. Scroll down a little and you'll see a new option for Memoji Stickers. Toggle that off and you can pretend that our great national nightmare never happened.

I'm not saying that you'll sleep better at night, get promoted at work, and find love because of a keyboard setting. But you might. It's that awesome!

In iOS 13.3 and iPadOS 13.3, Apple has added the ability to set communication limits for Phone, FaceTime, Messages, and iCloud contacts. In doing so, parents can better manage Screen Time for their children on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

Among the new features in the latest iOS and iPadOS release is the "specified contacts" option in Screen Time, which lets you further limit who your children can communicate with during downtime and after app limits have become exhausted. Meanwhile, during Allowed Screen Time, you can now choose "everyone" or "contacts only" for who can communicate with your kids. The setting prevents unknown contacts from trying to communicate for added peace of mind.

Since Screen Time first launched, Apple has steadily improved the feature by adding options and extending its reach to macOS. Among the newest features is the ability to view usage data for up to 30 days, and compare week over week results. Meanwhile, in Downtime, kids can click One More Minute to give them an additional minute of screen time without further interaction. Apple has also redesigned the time limit screen to make it easier to read and understand.

Besides the improvements to Screen Time, iOS 13.3 and iPadOS 13 adds new layouts in Apple News+ stories from newspapers, and the ability to use FIDO2-compliant NFC, Bluetooth, and Lightning security keys with your iOS device. There are also bug fixes present in this release.

A document from Vietnamese carrier Viettel suggests that iOS 13.3 may be released as early as next week.

According to a report from 9to5Mac, Viettel's new eSIM service will go live as of next Friday, December 13th. The instructions for the eSIM launch stipulate that their customers will be required to upgrade their iPhone to iOS 13.3 in order to use the service. As such, the report suggests that iOS 13.3 will almost certainly be released by that date.

9to5Mac further postulates that given most iOS releases roll out on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, we can expect iOS 13.3 by December 11. The document also states that users will need watchOS 6.1.1 in order to use the eSIM service, meaning this is likely also on its way.

If true, it means users won't have long to wait to access a scattering of new features. Notably, new Screen Time tools will allow parents to restrict their children's communication, stipulating who they can and cannot contact and at what times through the app. This only applies to iOS' Phone, Messages, and FaceTime apps and not social media or messaging services like WhatsApp.

Other updates include a toggle for disabling Memoji stickers. The public beta of iOS 13.3 has been available for a few weeks. Now, this latest report suggests the next big update may be due in just a few days. The report also notes that it "expects" tvOS 13.3 to ship at the same time, another welcome update that will bring back the Up Next queue for Apple TV's home screen.

A report from Bloomberg has revealed that Apple plans to overhaul the way it tests software, in the wake of an iOS 13 release plagued by bugs and stability issues.

According to the report, people familiar with the matter claim that Craig Federighi announced the changes at a recent internal 'kickoff' meeting with the company's software developers.

The new system will reportedly revolve around development teams ensuring that test versions of iOS future updates (known as "daily builds") automatically disable unfinished or buggy features. Testers will then be able to selectively enable those features via a new internal process named Flags, a settings menu that allows them to isolate each bug and its impact on the functionality of the software.

As Bloomberg notes:

Apparently, the test software got "so crammed with changes" at different stages of readiness that devices became difficult to use. This meant some testers would go days without a livable build, and wouldn't know what was and wasn't working. Not being able to test how the operating system was reacting to many new features is what lead to iOS 13's problems. In fact, according to the report, iOS 13.0 was so buggy, that developers essentially abandoned it to work on fixing iOS 13.1, Apple expected only die-hard Apple fans would take the plunge and risk uploading to iOS 13.0.

Apple plans to apply this new approach to iOS, as well as iPadOS, watchOS, macOS and tvOS also. There is also reference to iOS 14, codenamed "Azul". Bloomberg reports that this is set to debut next year. Some planned features may be delayed until 2021 and Azul+1, more likely iOS 15. Regardless, people familiar with the plans claimed that iOS 14 would rival iOS 13 "in the breadth of its new capabilities." Hopefully, it will not rival iOS 13 for 'number of bugs likely to render mobile software unusable'.

Apple has stopped signing iOS versions 13.1.2 and 13.1.3 following the release of iOS 13.2 to the public.

As reported by AppleInsider iPhone users will no longer be able to download either of the previous versions of iOS from Apple's servers. Whilst this practice is commonplace following the release of newer software, recent reports have suggested that iOS 13.2 had crippled multitasking on iPhone. According to reports, 13.2 is incredibly aggressive when closing down background apps, to the point that users found it impossible to switch between apps and pick up where they had previously left off, even after a very short period of time.

This news means that users on iOS 13.2 who are experiencing these issues are stuck with them until the public release of iOS 13.3. Thankfully, that beta seems to have rectified 13.2's multitasking woes, so there is light at the end of this dark, multitasking-less tunnel.

There is no indication of when 13.3 will be made available to the public, so if you're already on 13.2 you'll just have to ride the storm. More cautious updaters may wish to remain on 13.1.2 and 13.1.3 until such time as 13.3 is release, leapfrogging 13.2 altogether.

Arment again highlights the reports that iOS 13.2 appears to be extremely aggressive in killing off background apps. The reports have also been noted by blogger Michael Tsai.

As mentioned Twitter is absolutely awash with reports of poor performance, memory management, and multitasking issues.

The underlying issue seems to be that Apple may have bitten off more than it can chew. in iOS 12 Apple took the time to relax its frantic feature release model and optimize what it already had in front of it. With iOS 13, it looks like Apple is back to shovelling out as many features as possible, without checking that they all work.

Apple does sometimes like to make changes to its core apps. And when it does, you can be sure that there will be people who don't like it. But sometimes it's more than a preference thing. Sometimes it causes real issues. Like moving the trash icon in iOS 13's Mail app.

As NBC News (via Cult of Mac) noticed, plenty of people have taken to Twitter to complain that they're accidentally deleting emails when they try to reply to them. Why? Because the trash icon is now where the button to reply to emails used to be.

Sure enough, people are accidentally deleting emails when they try to reply to them. And beause they've been pressing the same area of the screen to reply to emails for a while, they just can't quite quit.

That's muscle memory for you!

It's not just a few people, either. Twitter seems to be full of people accidentally deleting emails. Tons of them, in fact.

Apple presumably had its reasons for the change and ultimately people will get used to the new button placement. But this is another reminder to interface designers everywhere that a change you might think is a relatively minor, probably isn't to your users.

One of the biggest criticisms of Apple's platform management over the last few years is that, more often than not, they've released as many new bugs as they have features. Now, that's not entirely true. If you look back over the last decade and a half of forum posts, you'll quickly realize every year is the worst year ever. That's because old pain fades while new pain… it sears. But, 2019 has been bad. iOS 13, in particular, came in capital H O T hot, from a sketchy prime seed through a rollercoaster beta and into release.

So much so, iOS 13.1 went into beta before iOS 13.0 came out, and since then we've gone through iOS 13.1.1, iOS 13.1.2, and iOS 13.1.3 at a breakneck pace. And, frankly, more are needed.

Apple is typically aggressive when it comes to the number of new features they add and not aggressive enough about landing them all. iOS 12 was different, though. Apple deliberately pushed back some features that had been planned for iOS 12 and, instead, re-tasked some of their best and brightest engineers — engineers who had helped create some of the modern foundations of iOS — to go back and optimize and improve those foundations. The result was… terrific. Not only did performance improve, especially on older devices, but iOS 12 itself was rock solid from beta through release.

I super high key hoped Apple would make that the new normal and this year would be very much like the last. Instead, Apple went back to the old normal and maybe even tried to make up for lost time. The result was… the opposite of terrific.

Now, iOS 14 is already ramping up. Marketing is pushing down new features they feel iOS needs to be competitive and compelling next year and, engineering is pushing up features they think would be really cool and just as compelling to make.

That's why, most years, by now, I'd be giving you my own wish list full of must-have features, new and carried over, that I really want to see in iOS 14.

This year, though, I'm only going to push out one big wish, one biggest of ticket items alone. At least upfront: Change the way iOS is being developed.

Why iOS 13 is buggy

Earlier this week, former Apple engineer David Shayer, writing for TidBITS, enumerated why iOS 13 and macOS Catalina are, as he put it, so buggy.

First on the list is overloaded feature sets leading to schedule chicken.

Basically, Apple takes on too many new features each year. Too many to finish, much less polish, by launch day. Then, because no manager wants to admit their team's deliverables aren't on schedule, not enough features are deferred in a timely manner. And that causes a lot of last-minute misses.

We have had a few years, like iOS 12 and, of course, OS X Snow Leopard, where the reduction of new features in favor of better performance was headlined as a new feature. But, that they were headlined shows how few and decades between they've been.

It's one of the rare cases where Apple's 1000 nos just aren't enough. They need like 2000. Enough to provide push back against overloaded feature sets and cover for managers who need more time.

Second is that crash reports don't identify non-crashing bugs.

In other words, you can have a low or no number of bugs that cause crashes, but still a high number of bugs that cause frustration. If you're not somehow tracking those as well, things can look better than ever on your dashboard even as you're pissing off your user base on a daily basis.

And humans often respond more viscerally, more viciously even, to annoyance than anything else.

This actually came up a few of years ago on John Gruber's The Talk Show Live at WWDC 2015 with Phil Schiller.

Third is that less important bugs are triaged.

Apple has a classification system for bugs. P1 is major. P2 and P3, increasingly not so much. When engineers are first building a new feature, they can just fix bugs as they come up. When they go into the early stages of beta, there's still time to fix most things major. When they're about to be released, there's only time left for the showstoppers.

That's less a problem than a reality of any large-scale development process, even those at the biggest and richest tech companies in the world. Resources are simply always more limited than the always growing demands placed upon them.

And, since the next year brings the next set of features, the only time engineers can go back and fix older, lower priority bugs are when they're expressly given time in the schedule to do just that.

Like with iOS 12 and anything that affected performance.

Fourth builds on that — regressions get fixed but old bugs get ignored.

What this means is, new bugs that break things get fixed. Old bugs that don't break things get left to haunt the code until they do.

Like, for example, ancient audio and casting bugs coming back to terrorize new audio casting products.

It's not universal across teams, and it's certainly practical in some cases, but bugs like bills have a way of always coming due.

Fifth is automated testing gets used sparingly

WebKit and Safari are famous for zero regression. Any code checked in gets tested for performance and, if it slows things down in any way, it gets checked back out.

Here's Don Melton, former Director of Internet Technologies at Apple, explaining it on the Debug podcast:

I'm not sure where Apple is or isn't doing enough automated or unit testing, but Josh Shaffer, who spearheads a big part of the future of Apple development, SwiftUI, recently spoke about its importance on John Sundell's Swift podcast.

That's a good sign. No amount of internal QA can ever equal millions of customers hitting the software in millions of different ways, but testing does get rid of the low hanging targets before they hit them.

Sixth and last is ballooning complexity.

Back in the day, Apple only made Mac software. Then they added iPod. Then iPhone and Apple TV. iPad and Apple Watch. Now we even have AudioOS on the HomePod and BridgeOS on the TouchBar.

What's more, even now, some poor bastards at Apple not only have to still compile iTunes for Windows, but TV app for Samsung's Tizen, and, eventually, all the different Smart products it'll run on.

That's exponentially more to build for, to test for, and to solve for day in, day out, year after year.

And, as a good friend of mine likes to point out — complexity isn't the same as technical debt. Technical debt you can pay down. Complexity tends to accrue.

So, how can this all be fixed? Can all of it even be fixed?

The (Potential) iOS 14 Solution

I fully realize how ridiculous any recommendation my dumb blogger, podcaster, and YouTuber ass can make. But, I'm going to make two anyway. And, hey, if I'm going to run at a wall, I'm damn well going to leave a cartoon shaped hole through it when I do.

First, the iOS 12 approach should go from being the exception to being the rule.

Software engineering organizations don't scale linearly. Especially not when the scale is massive. The overhead always scales with them. So, even if you're adding engineers, as you increase platforms you have to decrease new and updated features per platform to account for that overhead. But, you also have to also increase maintenance and optimization for old features as well, or the new ones risk toppling the whole thing.

That's what made iOS 12 so great. It still had new features, just a more constrained — dare I say more traditionally Apple-like — number of them. But, it also allowed for the time needed to improve performance and reliability. Paying down technical debt, sure, but also deliberately reducing complexity, redundancy, and moving upper level hacks down into better planned, system-level components.

Second, Apple should move from a yearly update to a yearly roadmap.

Let me explain: The WWDC keynote and September events are just too big for Apple to give up. And I don't think they should. They're great for developers and even better for customers.I just think Apple should change that one slide at the end from "coming this fall" to "starting this fall".

Instead of Craig Federighi listing off the 8 to 12 tentpoles that will all hit customers all at the same time, he lays out the same tentpoles that will all hit customers over the course of the next year, starting in September and finishing in June, right before the next WWDC.

It already kinda works this way anyway, it's just the result of running downhill and desperately trying not to trip and fall, instead of picking a slope and a more measured pace to get to the same place.

We already get the big .1 emoji update in the late fall. You know, the one that really drives updates. We even already get previews of features coming later, like Portrait Mode back in the day and Deep Fusion this year.

And we already get staged released, but for features that just aren't ready in time, like iMessage Sync or iCloud Folder Sharing.

So, just plan all the features out that way to begin with. Take advantage of the beta to make sure what's finished for September is rock-solid in September, and the rest get baked until October, March, even June.

Sure, some features will still have to be finished in time for the new products that depend on them. But for the others, set expectations that they might take some time… and then take that time.

But, those two things — Make every year a half a Snow Leopard year, and instead of setting expectations for a release date, set them for a road map, and I legit think Apple will see a lot less frustration and a lot more satisfaction from everyone, engineers and customers alike.

• Chrome will now automatically switch modes based on the system setting.
• Google has also changed how bookmarks, recent tabs, and more are displayed .

Google has a reputation for being the last to take advantage of new iOS features, but in Chrome it's managed to at least get the update out relatively quickly. Google Chrome for iOS now supports Dark Mode!

Changing the system iOS 13 Dark Mode setting will also change how Chrome looks, giving you a light or dark appearance as and when required. But that's just the start of things. Chrome has some other interface changes to share.

What's New

Thanks for choosing Chrome! This version includes:

• The ability to switch Chrome to dark mode if your device has been upgraded to iOS 13.
• Bookmarks, History, Recent Tabs and Reading List are now presented as cards on iOS 13.
• The ability to add a new credit card directly in Chrome from the settings page.

Assuming they're using iOS 13 Chrome users will also notice that Bookmarks, History, Recent Tabs, and Reading List are all shown as cards within Chrome. That's a neat touch that will make the app look and feel like a more modern web browser than it otherwise would. And when you're competing with Safari you need every edge you can get.

Prior to iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, the Share Sheet on iPhone and iPad hasn't changed all that much in the last several years. It's the primary way to share things from iOS (and now iPadOS) Twitter, Facebook, Messages, and other apps. You can also execute certain actions, such as copying links, running shortcuts, and more.

While all of this is still true in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, things have changed a little bit. It used to be that the share sheet was split into three strict divisions: AirDrop, activities for sharing with or to apps, and activities specific to the app from which you are sharing, such as options to add a page to bookmarks in Safari or share an app URL in the App Store.

You can still do all of those things, the capabilities have just expanded more, and the list of actions that can interact with the app has grown significantly and the layout has also changed quite a bit.

How the new share sheet works

The share sheet still functions much like it always has, it's just been expanded. The top of the sheet always shows you exactly what you're sharing. Depending on the app, you might see an Options button that lets you choose how to send your item (Safari, for instance, lets you send a webpage as either a PDF or a web archive file).

Below this bar, you're now presented with contact-based sharing options, letting you share with a specific contact in an app pre-determined by the system based on your previous contact activity with that person. This is also where AirDrop operations will automatically pop up if someone is in range with a ready device.

Third, there's the app-sharing bar. As with previous versions of the share sheet, you use this section for app-specific sharing, and you'll share your item to different apps like Notes, Messages, and Reminders. There's also a persistent AirDrop button.

Finally, we have the actions section, and this has seen the biggest change from the previous share sheet. You used to have to tap a big … more button to get a lot of different actions to show up, but now, every compatible action shows up in this section, and while you can turn some off, you can't turn all of them off.

The action section is itself split into three sections: Favorites, app-specific actions, and Other Actions. Favorites are actions you've manually added to that section that you perform all of the time, like copying a URL. App-specific are only for the app from which you're sharing, and Other Actions are for actions from other apps, like adding a package delivery to Deliveries, or for shortcuts that you've made. Some actions in this section can be turned on and off, but not all of them.

How to use the share sheet in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13

1. In an app, tap the share button.
2. Tap a contact sharing button or an AirDrop button to share with a specific contact right away in a pre-determined app. The app with which you will be sharing your item with that particular contact will be indicated by the app icon to one side of their avatar.

3. Tap the AirDrop or app icon to share your item using a specific app.
4. Tap an action to perform that action with or on your item. This could be copying a webpages URL, adding a delivery number to a package-tracking app, or using your item with a shortcut.

How to customize the app-sharing bar

Use this section to share or save your item with AirDrop, Messages, Mail, and other apps.

1. In an app, tap the available share button.
2. Swipe to the left on the app-sharing bar and tap More.
3. Tap Edit.

4. Tap, hold, and drag the handles on one of your Favorites to change its position on your Favorites list.
5. Tap the switches to turn any of the presented options on (green) or off (gray). When turned off, that app won't appear on the share sheet or in the More section.
6. Tap the + next to an item so that it will appear in the app sharing bar when you open the share sheet.

7. Tap the - button next to a favorite that you want to remove.
8. Tap Remove.
9. Tap Done.

How to customize the action section

Use this section to perform actions using the item you want to share, like copying its URL or using it with a shortcut.

1. In an app, tap the available share button.
2. Scroll to the bottom of the share sheet and tap Edit Actions.
3. Tap, hold, and drag the handles on one of your Favorites to change its position on your Favorites list.

4. Tap the green + button to add an app-specific action or other action to your Favorites list.
5. Tap the red - button.
6. Tap Remove to finish removing something from your Favorites.

7. Tap the switches to turn any of the presented options on (green) or off (gray). When turned off, that app won't appear on the share sheet.
8. Tap Done.

Dark Mode was one of the most requested and anticipated features of iOS and, with the launch of iOS 13, we finally saw it come to the iPhone and the iPad. It brought the feature to all of Apple's own apps and it covered everything at the system level. Since the launch of iOS 13, developers have been rolling out Dark Mode on their own apps as well, thanks to their hard work and Apple's launch of SwiftUI which automatically gives apps built with the language the feature.

One of the things that Dark Mode could potentially benefit is battery life. If you don't have to push white or colored pixels and can leave them inactive, you use less battery. It makes sense in theory, but we haven't seen much in the realm of testing on the subject - until now. PhoneBuff has released a new video in which it puts two iPhone XS models head to head: one with Dark Mode enabled, and one without.

They ran the tests using robotic arms that could tap through a number of scenarios in exact synchronization with the other robot in order to calculate the battery difference as accurately as possible. The test put each phone through a number of common use cases: talking with people on iMessage, watching YouTube videos, and getting directions with Google Maps.

The results of the test were promising. The iPhone XS that did not have Dark Mode enabled ran out of battery, while the one that did still had 30% battery life remaining. Of course, this was a controlled test using a specific set of apps and the iPhone used featured Apple's OLED display, something that can only be found on the iPhone X, XS, and 11 Pro. The overall benefit has yet to be tested on the iPhone 11 which features an LCD display. Regardless, it does show that enabling Dark Mode is a perfectly legitimate way to help extend the battery life for your iPhone.

Apple has released iOS 13 adoptions numbers on its developer website today. Reported by 9to5Mac, Apple says that iOS 13 is already running on more than half of all currently used iPhones. Compared to iOS 12, iOS 13 is being adopted at the same speed for all iPhones but is actually getting installed about 3% faster for iPhones introduced in the last four years.

Apple has broken down the adoption numbers into two categories: devices introduced in the last four years and all devices. As of October 15, 2019, 55% of all iPhones introduced in the last four years already use iOS 13, while 38% run iOS 12 and 7% are still running earlier operating systems.

When you branch out into all iPhones currently being used that number drops, but only by a little. Currently, 50% of all iPhones, no matter when they were released, now use iOS 13, while 41% run iOS 12 and 9% are still running an earlier OS.

Apple has also released install numbers for the newly released iPadOS, Apple's new iPad-specific operating system that was introduced this year at WWDC 2019. As of today, 41% of all iPads introduced in the last four years use iPadOS, whereas 51% still use iOS 12 and 8% still use earlier versions.

When you expand that to all iPads, regardless of release date, 33% of them are now using iPadOS. Around 51% are still using iOS 12, and 16% are still on earlier versions of the software.

These numbers were calculated by Apple through the App Store and reported on their developer website. Since iOS 13 was released about a month ago, the software has already seen four updates to fix various bugs and performance issues. iOS 13.2, which will bring more updates and new emojis, is currently in beta testing with developers and those signed up through the Apple Beta Software Program.

Apple has slowly been releasing developer betas for iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 throughout the summer. Most of the time this means minor changes to the new features Apple introduced along with performance and stability improvements, but here and there it introduces some delayed features that it hasn't really talked about.

We're making it our mission to find these new features. The latest developer beta is no different. Here's everything new that Apple added with the latest developer beta of iOS 13, iPadOS 13 and their subsequent updates.

Today Apple released the second developer and public betas for iOS 13.2. The update adds new privacy features for Siri, including an opt-out for helping Apple improve Siri and Dictation using select voice snippets. Apple is also making some user experience tweaks to the Home screen, including new wording for rearranging apps using the haptic pop-up menu, as well as a new option for deleting apps. Crucially, there are also 200 new emoji in iOS and iPadOS 13.2, and new video options in the Camera app.

Here are the notable changes with iOS 13.2 beta 2.

• Siri privacy settings: You can now opt-out of sharing audio recordings of your Siri and dictation sessions. This is found in Settings > Privacy > Analytics & Improvements. You can also now delete your Siri and Dictation history in Settings > Siri & Search > Siri & Dictation History.
• Home screen tweaks: The pop-up menu that appears on your Home screen when you long-press or 3D Touch an app icon has seen a terminology change to one of its options. Instead of "Rearrange apps," it now says "Edit Home screen." There is now also a button to delete your selected app.
• New emoji: There are over 200 new emoji in iOS 13.2, including the Yawning Face, Waffel, and Otter.
• Video recording controls: You can now change the resolution and frame rate at which videos record from directly within the Camera app. Tap the numbers in the top-right corner of the app to cycle through the avaialble resolutions and frame rates.

Today Apple released the first developer and public beta for iOS 13.2. The update adds a bevy of new features that did not show up with earlier iOS 13 updates like Deep Fusion. Besides the new features, not much changed with the design of iOS 13 aside from Apple fixing some of the annoying bugs plaguing it so far. This update seems to be geared towards launching the new features.

Here are the notable changes with iOS 13.2 beta 1.

• Deep Fusion: The long-awaited camera feature is now available. The feature uses the A13 Bionic's Neural Engine to take multiple shots to create detailed images.
• Announce Messages with Siri: The voice dictation feature makes its debut with iOS 13.2 beta 1. It allows Siri to read out messages through AirPods. It is not turned on by default. If you want to turn it on, go to Settings > Siri & Search > turn on the Announce Messages toggle.
• Research App: The Research app now has a section within the Settings. It will help academic and research institutions conduct researches.
• AirPlay & Handoff: The Handoff section found within General is now labeled AirPlay & Handoff. It also adds new options to "Transfer to HomePod" and "Automatic AirPlay to TVs."
• Volume Control within Control Center: Now when you have AirPods or Beats headphones, their icon will appear within the Volume Control. This feature is carried over from the new volume control on the home screen.

Following its September 10 event, Apple released the third developer and public beta for iOS 13.1. Like the second beta, Apple didn't make any noticeable changes aside from refining the new features it added with the first beta for iOS 13.1 (which you can see down below).

Additionally, Apple rolled out the gold master version for iOS 13.0. This too doesn't offer any major updates aside from last-minute bug fixes and refinements ahead of its public release on September 19. That will be followed shortly by the public release of iOS 13.1 on September 30.

Apple has released the second developer beta for iOS 13.1. Unlike the first beta, this one is short on changes. There seems to be no major changes or tweaks to the software. We'll continue to keep an eye to see if any noticeable changes pop up.

Apple has released the first developer beta for iOS 13.1. The beta offers many changes that we will cover with the post-13.0 update, including many features that had previously been removed from betas. This was in part due to Apple refining some of these features, but they will eventually make their way into users' hands.

Here are some of the notable changes with iOS 13.1 beta 1.

• Shortcut Automations: Automations were removed from the iOS 13 beta but seem to make a return in iOS 13.1.
• AirPods Volume Indicator: When you connect a pair of AirPods, you will now see an AirPods icon inside the volume toggles whenever you adjust it.
• Improved Mouse support: The mouse function with the iPad now supports the right-click functionality.
• HEVC changes: Apple added new HEVC encoding with alpha channels.
• Apple Maps collections: There will now be a prompt warning you when you try to delete Apple Map collections.
• New HomeKit Icons: The icons in the Home app have been redone with more detailed finishes.
• TestFlight Indicator: The TestFlight indicator is now a much brighter yellow dot next to the app name.
• Apple Watch app: Within the Apple Watch app in the iPhone, the Display and Text Size has been renamed to Display & Brightness.
• Shared ETA: The ability to share ETAs, or estimated time of arrival, has returned to iOS 13.1. This was another one of the features that was removed in the beta process.
• Dynamic Wallpapers: Apple has tweaked the look of the dynamic wallpapers. They now look differently with new color gradients, and, additionally, are now available to all iPhones, not just post-iPhone X devices.
• Fonts: There is now a section in the App Store for the font functionality that Apple promised with iOS 13.
• Reading Goals: There is a new toggle in iOS 13 that lets you set reading goals for Books.
• Nike Run Club app: The "Nike+ Run Club" app has been renamed "Nike Run Club."

Apple has released the eighth developer and public betas of iOS 13. Not much has changed from the last beta as most of the improvements seem to have been made to the overall performance of the software.

Apple is only weeks away from releasing the final version to public users in September, meaning it is now in the final stages of the beta process. Don't expect many major changes from here on out.

Apple today released the seventh developer beta for iOS 13 that continues to tweak the software changes as the official release nears. Here are some of the notable changes.

• Dark Mode: The wording for the Dark Mode toggle within Control Center has been changed slightly. Instead of Light Appearance and Dark Appearance, it now says Light Mode and Dark Mode.
• Folder Design: After changing the gradient of Folders to match the wallpaper better in the last beta, Apple reversed course to the standard lighter gradient that provides more contrast.
• Deleting Media in Messages: Apple returned the function that lets users delete media attachments within the Info section in Messages.
• Do Not Disturb: The Do Not Disturb mode now syncs between an iPhone and Apple Watch. When it is enabled on one device, it'll automatically turn on for the other.
• All Photos: An All Photos view has been added to the revamped Photos app in iOS 13. Previously, only Years, Months and Days sections were available.
• Blocked Senders Options: Beta 7 adds more options for the blocked sensors Mail feature. You now have the options to "Move to Trash" and "Mark as Blocked, Leave in Inbox."
• Silence Unknown Callers: When turning on Silence Unknown Callers, there is a new text that alerts you that "Incoming calls will continue to ring from people in your contacts, recent outgoing calls, and Siri Suggestions."
• Find My: The Notify When Found function is now working in the Find My app. Apple also introduced a new "Help a Friend" feature with this new beta.

Apple today released the sixth beta for iOS 13 introducing a few under the radar tweaks to the overall UI along with the usual bug fixes. Here are some of the major changes.

• Dark mode Control Center toggle: There is now a new Dark Mode toggle within Control Center making it super easy to turn the mode on.
• Hidden Links: A new 3D Touch option now lets you disable link previews depending on the site.
• Folders: The new beta has a slight change in the transparency of the folders. It now matches the wallpapers better, leading to a better and cleaner look. Folders within the dock will now contrast more as well.
• Three Finger controls: Apple is bringing the three-finger controls from the iPad to the iPhone. Tapping on the screen with three fingers now brings up controls for undo, redo, copy, paste.
• Background Location warning: iOS 13 beta 6 now warns users in more detail when an app is using background location tracking.
• Bluetooth Device warning: Whenever you sync a device, it will now warn you that the app could use Bluetooth when it is nearby.
• Splash Screens: The Photos and Apple Arcade now have formal splash screens that announce everything that is new with the app with recent updates.
• Privacy Policy: There are new privacy policies for the Analytics, Apple Pay and Location pages that pop up.
• Volume adjuster: The Volume toggle is back down to 16 points of volume. Beta 5 introduced 34 points of adjusting but Apple has gone back to the original format.
• Network icon: The LTE or 5GE icon has returned to its original size. Beta 5 introduced icons that were slightly bigger, matching the signal bar and battery icon more closely.

Apple just released the fifth developer betas for iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, bringing forth many new features that seem quite interesting. Most of the major changes affect the iPad.

• iPad icon customization: You can now adjust the number icons you have on the iPad home screen. You can either go for the denser, 6x5 layout with smaller icons and more right icons, or 4x5 layout with spaced out and bigger icons.
• Cursor customization: Apple introduced more customization over the cursor for the iPad. You can now adjust the size of it to tend different points, along with the already available color and auto-hide options.
• Dark Mode switcher: Apple now asks you if you want to enable Dark Mode when users download iOS 13. The transition between Light and Dark mode has also been refined.
• CarPlay album art: You now have the option to turn on or off album artwork in CarPlay.

• Volume adjuster: You now have 34 different points on which to adjust the volume level. The volume slider also offers taptic feedback.
• Reopen closed window: For app exposé on the iPad, you now have the ability to reopen a window you have previously closed.
• Home app wallpapers: The Home app now offers more wallpapers to select from. They include various colors with a minimalist finish.
• Siri for Everyone setup: Siri for Everyone now understands multiple voices. However, you will need HomePodOS 13 to enable the new feature.
• Share sheet: The share sheet on the iPad has been changed up. It now looks cleaner with different typography icons.

• Automations tab in Shortcuts: The "Automations" tabs in the Shortcuts app has been temporarily removed. No word on if it'll appear with a minor upgrade or the next developer beta update.
• Larger network icon: The carrier icon in the corner of the iPhone has been made slightly larger. It night fits more snuggly between the signal bar and battery icons.
• Achievement Move icons: The achievement goals in the Activity app have been expanded. You are now rewarded with a badge after hitting goals all the way up to 2,000 times.

Everything you need to know about iOS 13

The user interface changes in CarPlay are some of the biggest changes not talked much about in iOS 13. CarPlay received the first major overhaul Apple has implemented in years and it makes it much more useful while driving. It now offers support for two displays, ends the annoying phone-to-display syncing, and introduces a new Dashboard that is an all-in-one hub for maps, music and more.

The first two features round out the CarPlay experience, but the last one radically changes it and improves it. It also makes another aspect of the user interface clear: CarPlay is now tailor-made for big displays.

When Apple unveiled CarPlay in 2014, it did so with a wide spectrum of vehicles in mind. At the time, however, most cars came with economical displays that were just big enough to offer a solid touchscreen interface. That's not the case now. As most cars have received major tech improvements, their infotainment displays have drastically grown in size.

The CarPlay of yesterday worked better on smaller displays with its row of icons and one-app-at-a-time interface. The CarPlay of iOS 13 is ready for the large displays and turns your car into a sleek multi-tasking surrogate for your iPhone.

At least I thought so when Apple announced the CarPlay revamp during WWDC 2019, but I wanted to put it to the test. So once iOS 13 was rolled out, I began using CarPlay on the 6.5-inch square infotainment display of my 2016 Volkswagen GTI. Then I reached out to Mazda to see if they would let me borrow one of their new 2019 Mazda3s because it comes with an ultra-wide 8.8-inch display. This size falls into the sweet spot of displays that the new CarPlay design is aimed at.

I tested both out for about a week and my suspicions were confirmed immediately: CarPlay works much better on bigger displays.

For reference, the display in the GTI is touch-only while the Mazda3 has a scroll wheel you use to get around. Both worked perfectly well, though touch controls are my preference.

Let me talk about the experience in my personal car first. The 6.5-inch display on my car sounds big, but it really isn't. It is more of a boxy design that isn't conducive to the new Dashboard mode. You can still use it—Apple made sure iOS 13's CarPlay is still usable on any display—but it's a cramped experience, to say the least.

When you have Maps guiding you and music playing, each card is particularly small. The Maps view only shows you the ETA, not the remaining miles or the time it'll take you to get to your destination meanwhile the controls for the music app are tiny. This is offset by the fact that most steering wheels offer rewind and forward controls, but it is still an awkward experience.

It only gets worse when a third panel shows up — a reminder or calendar event, for example.

That is not the experience I got with the Mazda3. Its 8.8-inch ultra-wide display was amazing. Aside from apps offering much more content to look at — Apple Maps offers way more of your surrounding area and Spotify displays big and beautiful artwork — the Dashboard is where it truly shines.

The Maps view is big and expansive, displaying ETA, miles to location and minutes to location, while the music card offers big and easy to press buttons, no matter how many other apps show up in the Dashboard. Additionally, on the home screen, it displays two rows of five icons instead of two rows of four icons. A minor detail that will come in handy if you use a lot of CarPlay apps.

When Apple redesigned CarPlay for iOS 13, it knew it had to fit in the big displays that cars offer now and will offer moving forward. Its answer to this via the Dashboard was masterful, and using it on an expansive display was a joy.

CarPlay will still work on smaller displays like the one in my GTI, but that's just functionality. CarPlay on an ultra-wide display was an experience that made driving that much better.

Unfortunately, I had to return the 2019 Mazda3. In returning to my car, I must commend Apple for making a new CarPlay that still works on the smaller display of my car. It's not the same effect, but I can still get the CarPlay experience and I'll take that over a stock infotainment system anytime.

During WWDC in June Apple announced that iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 would offer a Dark Mode for the first time. It was something users had been screaming for ever since macOS 10.14 Mojave received the same feature last year. And it was finally coming.

Fast forward a few months – a whole summer, even – and a pair of seriously troubled beta programs and we now have iOS 13 and iPadOS 13.1. The latter never saw a version 13 and both have been superseded a couple of times since their release, but who's counting? Not me. I lost track long ago.

Alongside the new updates we saw many of our favorite apps also get updates that added support for Dark Mode. Some of them did a better job than others. Some already offered theming of their own so nothing really changed. But being able to transform iOS and iPadOS into a full-on dark theme was absolutely new. And having multiple apps respect that choice was mind blowing. As an aside, it really is odd how easily our minds are blown, right?

At this point most people have had at least a couple of weeks to take iPhone and iPad's Dark Mode for a spin. Which leads me to my question:

Now that you've had chance to use Dark Mode properly, do you like it?

I ask this because I have a theory. My theory is that Dark Mode is one of those features that everyone clamors for until they get it. Once they do, they use it. And then they discard it when they realize that the thought of Dark Mode is way better than the execution.

Whether the fault of that failure to execute falls at the feet of Apple – did developers get the right tools? – or developers – does Dark Mode really need to be black? – it doesn't matter. It might even be our fault for setting expectations so high in the first place. All I know is my anecdotal flicking through social media and shoulder surfing tells me nobody's really feeling Dark Mode anymore.

How to save Live Photos as a video on your iOS device

1. Launch Photos on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Find the Live Photos that you want to create a video file with.
   • When viewing an image, you can tell if it is a Live Photo when it has the diffusing circle icon in the top left, along with the word "LIVE" next to it.

3. Tap on the Share button.
4. You can scroll through your images and select more just above the Share Sheet options.

5. Scroll down and select Save as Video.
6. Your new video will be in the Recents album.

How to quickly find all of your Live Photos

There's no quick way to see what photos are actually Live Photos with a single glance in your Camera Roll, but all Live Photos are grouped together in its own album. Here's how to view that album and quickly make a video.

1. Launch Photos on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap Albums.

3. Scroll down until you see Media Types.
4. Select Live Photos.
5. Tap Select in the top right corner.

6. Tap the Live Photos that you want to make a video out of.
7. Tap the Share button.
8. Select Save as Video.

Your video doesn't need to be back-to-back Live Photos

While making a video with multiple Live Photos, they don't need to have been taken back-to-back. The Save as Video option works for any Live Photo that you took, including old ones. This is just a brand new feature that was introduced in iOS 13.

If you took Live Photos consecutively, you can press-and-hold that Live Photo to watch it, and if you don't release your finger, it will automatically play the next consecutive Live Photo that you took.

We yearned for the day and it has finally arrived: Instagram for iOS now offers a dark mode. Instagram quietly rolled out the update today giving users a fully dark user interface to match the system-wide version.

Questions lingered as to whether Instagram was going to offer a dark mode with the release of iOS 13. As just about every app added support, Instagram remained one of the last hold outs—until today.

The update turns the entire Instagram interface dark including the feed, stories and the discover tab. It looks a bit odd a first, but it quickly grows on you. It'll make scrolling through your feed in the middle of the night much easier.

Instagram's new dark mode will also work with iOS 13's automatic system-wide Dark Mode. When your phone goes dark, so too will the popular social media app.

The Instagram update is now rolling out to users. If you haven't received it yet, go into the App Store and select the Instagram app to see if the update is available.

With macOS Catalina and iPadOS 13, Sidecar gives everyone the ability to have a second screen without needing a separate monitor. By default, when connecting your Mac to your iPad, the screen positioning places the iPad to the right of your Mac's screen. You can, however, change the positioning and even customize which screen you want to set as the default main screen with the Menu bar and desktop icons.

If you're new to using a second screen with your Mac, or have never needed to position a second screen in a different location than the default, you may not know about display arrangements on Mac. Here's how to find and customize it.

How to change which side your iPad is positioned in Sidecar in iPadOS 13 and macOS Catalina

Before you start, make sure your iPad is connected to your Mac using Sidecar or you won't see some of the additional display options available.

1. Click on the Sidecar icon in the Menu bar (with Sidecar already connected).
2. Click on Open Display Preferences.

3. Click on the Arrangement tab.
4. Select the iPad screen in the display arrangement window.
5. Drag it to your desired position.

You can place it to the left or right, above or below, and even slightly angled to one corner. However you're planning on using your iPad as a second screen, you can position the display arrangement.

As soon as you make the changes, the repositioning will take place.

How to change which screen shows the Menu bar and desktop icons in Sidecar in iPadOS 13 and macOS Catalina

Before you start, make sure your iPad is connected to your Mac using Sidecar or you won't see some of the additional display options available.

1. Click on the Sidecar icon in the Menu bar (with Sidecar already connected).
2. Click on Open Display Preferences.

3. Click on the Arrangement tab.
4. Select the white bar at the top of whichever display it is currently designated.
5. Drag the white bar to the other display.

As soon as you switch the Menu bar, it will appear on the new screen.

How to bring your display preferences together onto one screen for easier access in Sidecar in iPadOS 13 and macOS Catalina

If your iPad (or Mac) is too far for you to reach at the moment, but you want to make changes to it, you can bring all of the display windows onto whichever screen you are using and customize your options faster.

Before you start, make sure your iPad is connected to your Mac using Sidecar or you won't see some of the additional display options available.

1. Click on the Sidecar icon in the Menu bar (with Sidecar already connected).
2. Click on Open Display Preferences.

3. Click on the Arrangement tab.
4. Click on the Gather Windows button.

When you click on Gather Windows, both display windows will combine on the screen you're currently active in.

At WWDC in June, Apple teased a new feature known as HomeKit Secure Video, which provides greater security and privacy for cameras inside your home. Since then, however, there's been no update as to when the feature would — until now.

An image posted to Reddit shows off what appears to be HomeKit Secure Video's UI. Apple gave the briefest of looks at WWDC, but this is a little more comprehensive.

In the image, the UI shows a timeline along with the events that occurred that day. Each event appears to feature an icon of what was detected, including a person, dog, and car. There are mic and volume buttons, and a button for sharing the captured video.

Apple said HomeKit Secure Video will analyze video on a local Apple device, such as an iPhone or iPad, and if something is detected, footage will then be uploaded to iCloud. Apple said only users, not Apple, can see that footage.

Users who have download the first beta of iOS 13.2 are reportedly being promoted to enabled HomeKit Secure Video. The only problem is cameras need to be updated to take advantage.

When HomeKit Secure Video does launch, cameras from Netatmo, Eufy, and Logitech will support the feature.
