If, like me, you’ve been using the Delta Game Emulator, a new 1.6 update is rolling out that adds iPad support, and it’s perfect timing with Amazon Prime Day starting on July 16.

When Apple announced the new M4 iPad Pro and M2 iPad Air it also showed off a couple of new accessories, not least the impressive Apple Pencil Pro. The new stylus brings with it a few new features, including one that you might not even have noticed yet.

When Apple showed off the new stylus it pointed to features like barrel roll and the squeeze gesture which, when combined, allow users of the Apple Pencil Pro to quickly select a new tool. Once selected, tilting and rolling the Apple Pencil Pro will change the way that tool is used, allowing things like fountain pens and other tools to be used in a more realistic way.

But many people will have missed an associated feature that generates a fake shadow of the tool in question whenever the Apple Pencil is placed near the iPad Pro or iPad Air's display. And in typical Apple fashion, it seems that shadow is massively over-engineered.

So many polygons

To get a feel for what the shadow can do, check out Quinn Nelson's X post which includes a handy video of the feature in action. We see the fountain pen tool used while the iPad Pro generates a fake shadow that even reacts to the Apple Pencil Pro's tilt angle. The barrel roll feature also allows the fountain pen shadow to rotate, as if a real pen was being used.

Now, X user Nicolás Álvarez has discovered that the shadows themselves are based on new object files that can be found in iPadOS 17.5. Those objects are made up of thousands of polygons with the fountain pen featuring 3,000 of them.

It's this attention to detail — or overkill if you prefer — that makes the Apple Pencil Pro so interesting. These shadows didn't need to exist, and once Apple took the decision to add them they didn't need to be quite so ... good.

Strangely, the Apple Pencil Pro and the Apple Pencil 2 both come in at a price of $129 on Apple's own website, with the latter going on sale a little more thanks to its age. 

Needless to say, you often won't be picking between the two if you already have an iPad but it's worth considering what makes them different before you settle on your iPad setup. For most, the difference between the two will mostly come down to compatibility but the newest model has some really great features worth paying attention to. 

If you are looking to make the purchase, here's the difference between Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil 2, and which we recommend picking up. 

Price

As mentioned before, both the Apple Pencil Pro and the Apple Pencil 2 are available from Apple for $129. The caveat is that Apple’s Pencil 2 is much older. As such, it often features in deal events like Amazon Prime Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday at significantly reduced prices. The best price we’ve ever seen it at is $79, and it spends more time reduced than it does at RRP. As such, if you’re shopping beyond the walls of the Apple Store, the Pencil 2 can often be found for much less. 

Features

The Apple Pencil Pro and Pencil 2 share several features that are key to the Apple Pencil’s functionality. Both feature Apple’s “pixel-perfect precision” and low latency, so you can use them to draw, write, and sketch precisely with almost no lag, just as if you were writing on paper. Both also feature pressure and tilt sensitivity so you can shade and create lines of different thicknesses intuitively. Both also attach magnetically to your iPad and can be charged and paired wirelessly, although the pairing systems they use are different, hence compatibility differences that we’ll come to. Finally, both support Apple Pencil hover, which lets you preview inputs before you make them without touching the display, and the Double-tap function, which lets you quickly switch between tools.

Differences

That’s where the similarities end. The new Apple Pencil Pro has four unique features that set it apart from the Pencil 2. The barrel roll gesture lets the user rotate the Pencil for even more control of pen and brush tools, powered by a new internal gyroscope. The Pro also features a squeeze gesture, which can be used to access more tools, line weights, and colors quickly. Furthermore, the Pencil Pro delivers Haptic feedback so that your Pencil will buzz and vibrate as you make inputs, so you know when your squeezes and taps have been registered. Finally, the Apple Pencil Pro features Find My, so you can locate it using an iPhone or iPad with the Find My app if you lose it. 

As you can see, the Apple Pencil Pro offers the most comprehensive experience when it comes to creating art. All of the features that set it apart from the Pencil 2 will really benefit professionals looking to create artwork on their iPad. If you’re just looking for a Pencil to take some basic notes on your iPad, or as a quirky input tool for browsing the web then the Apple Pencil 2 might be more suited to your needs.

Compatibility 

The compatibility of the Apple Pencil Pro and Pencil 2 is fairly straightforward because neither works with the same iPads. The Apple Pencil 2 works with the following iPads:

Meanwhile, the Apple Pencil Pro only works with latest iPad Pro M4 and the iPad Air with M2. With compatibility as the final piece of the puzzle, which one should you choose? 

Which should you choose? 

 The first, and most vital consideration when choosing between the Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil 2 is this: Do you already own an iPad? If the answer is yes, the choice between the Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil 2 is largely irrelevant, as you’ll need to choose the one that works with your iPad. If that’s not one of Apple’s brand newest iPads, choose the Pencil 2. If you’ve bought Apple’s latest iPad Pro or iPad Air for 2024, you must buy the Apple Pencil Pro if you want it to work with your iPad. 

The question is more complicated if you’re a first-time iPad and Apple Pencil buyer. Ultimately, there are two things to consider, your budget, and your artistic ambition. 

If you want to make a budget-friendly choice, the Apple Pencil 2 might be the way to go. While the $50 difference in price between a new Pencil Pro and a reduced Pencil 2 might seem trivial, the accompanying iPad you’ll need to buy will be much cheaper. Apple’s M4 iPad Pro starts at $999, while the new iPad Air M2 starts at $599. You won’t be able to find an iPad that works with the Pencil 2 from Apple, but one you pick up from elsewhere is going to be considerably cheaper. If you’re on a tight budget, choose the Apple Pencil 2. 

If you’re buying an iPad and an Apple Pencil for the first time for the sole purpose of creating great artwork, the Apple Pencil Pro seems like a no-brainer. It has the most artistic potential of any of Apple’s iPad styli thanks to all of those new features. The Apple Pencil 2 is no slouch, but if you want the best Apple Pencil for drawing, sketching, and painting, the Pencil Pro is the one for you.

Buying an Apple Pencil in 2024 can be a confusing experience. Before Apple announced its newest stylus at its ‘Let Loose’ event on May 7, there were three models to choose from. Now that there are four, it’s fair to say that you should only be looking at two of these Pencils instead.

Apple Pencil (USB-C) was released in October 2023 as the ‘cheap’ drawing stylus which is light on features, but gets the job done for creatives. Apple Pencil Pro, out from May 15, costs more but has extra useful features for content creators, such as squeezing gestures, amongst others.

You may be considering which new iPad to choose from, between the iPad Air M2 and iPad Pro M4 tablets. Did you know that Apple Pencil Pro only works with these tablets? Deciding on which Pencil is best is a potential whack-a-mole dilemma, given the multitude of different compatibility issues you’ll come across, let alone which has better features.

With this in mind, we’ve laid out how Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil Pro fare against each other, and whether it’s worth upgrading to one of them if you’re still using the OG Apple Pencil 1.

Specs

Design

At first glance, both Pencils look the same, from the nub down. It’s only when you look at the text at the top of the stylus that you’ll be able to tell which Apple Pencil is which. With Apple Pencil (USB-C, sliding the top will reveal the USB-C socket, ready to be used with an iPad so it can be paired or charged with a tablet. With Apple Pencil Pro, charging and pairing is just a matter of magnetically snapping it to one of the iPad Air M2 and iPad Pro M4 tablets.

The main differences come down to what’s inside — so let’s see what sets the two pencils apart.

Features

This is where the real differences lie for both Pencils. Apple Pencil (USB-C) is the cheaper option of the two, first of all. 

Apple Pencil (USB-C) pairs and charges through a USB-C cable and only has some basic features, such as Pressure sensitivity, Apple Pencil hover, as well as being able to magnetically attach to a compatible iPad. For $79 / £79, Apple Pencil (USB-C) is a great starting point if you want to see how the stylus fits in your workflow.

When it comes to Apple Pencil Pro, there’s a lot to unpack. Find My is built-in, so you can see where the stylus is if you’ve misplaced it nearby. A fake shadow will appear when you try to use the Pencil’s hover feature on an iPad’s display. This can make it easier for you when you’re trying to draw on a certain object. A new ‘squeeze’ gesture lets you quickly switch between menus for color palettes — but you can also set this to an Apple Shortcut if you wish. For example, you could ‘squeeze’ the Pencil, and a Shortcut may bring up the share sheet to send your drawing to another app. 

There’s also a new ‘barrel roll’ gesture. By twisting the Apple Pencil, the orientation of the strokes made on a project will change. It can also be used to change brush types, strokes, and more as you work on a creative project. Keep in mind though, Apple Pencil Pro is only compatible with the iPad Air M2 and iPad Pro M4 tablets. This is because the front camera was moved to the side of these models — which meant a slight connection change had to be made for Pencil Pro. At $129 / £129, it’s more expensive than Apple Pencil (USB-C), but you get far more features at your fingertips.

Battery Life

Apple says that both Pencils can last up to 11 hours, although we can’t imagine someone using the styli for that amount of time without a break. Keep in mind that you’ll be placing your chosen Apple Pencil back onto your iPad, where it’ll charge back up to 100%. Battery life has never been an issue in our testing with every Apple Pencil, so it’s not a factor to consider when choosing between these two models.

Charging is going to be a bugbear for some, as well. The Apple Pencil Pro charges super simply — just pop it on the magnetic point on your iPad, and it sips some power for its battery. The USB-C Pencil, however, is more of a pain. While you can use the magnetic charging with some iPads, others require you to use a Lightning dongle and USB-C cable to charge, like the iPad 9th gen.

Compatibility

As mentioned previously, Apple Pencil Pro only works with the iPad Air M2 and iPad Pro M4 tablets due to a connector change. When it comes to Apple Pencil (USB-C), it works with these new models, as well as a few more iPads.

Should you upgrade?

If you already have an Apple Pencil (USB-C) and you use it daily, upgrading to a Pencil Pro is a no-brainer if you’re also looking to upgrade to one of the new iPads. As our Editor-in-Chief Gerald said in his review of the stylus, “Apple Pencil is already a genuine device-seller for Apple’s iPad line-up, and Pencil Pro will bring even more creatives into Apple’s stores.”

The Pencil Pro’s new features, such as barrel roll and squeeze, are made to help cut down the steps required to access menus in apps or change the strokes. If you’ve already got a new iPad Air M2 or iPad Pro M4 device on order, it makes perfect sense to consider an Apple Pencil Pro to help with your creative projects even more.

Hot on the heels of the arrival of Apple's brand-new M4 iPad Pro and the revamped M2 iPad Air, you might be looking to accessorize your new tablet. Apple will of course sell you its own option; the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro or the standard Magic Keyboard which works with the new iPad Air. Both start from $299. But there are other options on the market.

Logitech announced this week that it has new keyboard and trackpad accessories of its own, and they're available for both the iPad Pro and iPad Air as well as the 11-inch and 13-inch display options.

The Logitech Combo Touch starts from just $199.99 which is a notable saving, although you don't get to pick your color. The iPad Pro version comes in a gray color, labeled as Graphite, while the iPad Air's keyboard is a slightly different gray, known as Oxford Grey. They're both very similar, but there's definitely no white for those who bought a silver or similarly-not-black iPad.

A touching combo

Beyond the color, there's plenty to like here. The keyboard is detachable and the kickstand is flexible to allow for multiple different modes. There's also a large trackpad for those who like to use a pointer when traversing their iPad's Home Screen.

Logitech points out that the backlit keyboard has no fewer than 16 different brightness levels while shortcut keys handle common tasks like adjusting the volume, controlling media, taking screenshots, enabling Do Not Disturb, and more.

As for the full price list, the 11-inch iPad Air version costs $199.99 while the larger 13-inch model costs $229.99. Upgrade to the iPad Pro and the 11-inch now costs $229.99 while the 13-inch will set you back $259.99. All considerably cheaper than their Apple-logoed counterparts, that's for sure. Logitech's website is the place to preorder, and you can expect your new keyboard to arrive shortly after your new iPad — on May 16.

Will my old iPad Air 5 case fit the iPad Air 6?

Yes and no. The iPad Air 4 and iPad Air 5 are exactly the same size as the 11-inch iPad Air 6 (M2), so those cases will all be interchangeable. The 13-inch iPad Air 6 (M2) is an entirely new device, so most old cases won't fit. Any 13-inch sleeve should be fine, though.

What features should I look for in an iPad Air case?

But I always use a case anyway. Partly to protect my iPad but also because my case converts into a stand, which I use all of the time. Plus, it houses my ZAGG Pro stylus, and allows it to charge while in the case. If you take your iPad on the go a lot, particularly to your workplace, I'd strongly suggest getting a case. You'll probably want a heavy-duty case, like the ZAGG Denali case. It might not hurt to get AppleCare+ as well.

No. The new iPad Pro with M4 chip models are thinner than their predecessors, so any kind of form-fitting or snap-on case won't fit properly. However, any 11-inch or 13-inch sleeve or bag should be fine for their respective size iPad Pro models.

In a further hint at a new Apple Pencil and an exciting update to the erase feature, you can now erase Apple’s logo from its homepage, hours ahead of its ‘Let Loose’ iPad event starting later today (May 7).

On Apple’s website, you can drag a finger or a mouse cursor over the company’s logo on the main page, erasing it like you might with an Apple Pencil. Once it disappears, another new logo will appear, ready for you to rub it out again. This likely hints towards a new eraser feature or update in the upcoming Apple Pencil model. This new functionality could be placed at the top of the drawing stylus, much like a regular pencil. Or the eraser could be summoned by a new gesture. Either way, we’d be surprised if the feature didn’t appear in the Apple Pencil 3, which is expected to be announced at Apple’s ‘Let Loose’ event later today.

As well as a new drawing pen, four new iPad models are rumored for the event — a new OLED iPad Pro with an M3 or M4 chip in two sizes, and an iPad Air 6 model, also in two sizes. Make sure to check iMore for all the coverage once the event starts at 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET / 3 PM BST.

Apple has been clear that this event is Apple Pencil-focused, so expect to see plenty of demos of how the new Pencil can benefit new and existing customers, as well as how it’s a huge leap from Apple Pencil 2.

With rumors that just four iPads will also be announced, we’re not expecting the event to last longer than an hour. Indeed, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman mentioned this in his ‘Power On’ newsletter, stating that "it’s expected to be about 35 minutes".

Whatever the case, the event is going to be an exciting one, and could hopefully showcase what makes these new iPads better than what’s currently available.

If you ever find yourself with a handful of Apple Pencils and just can't help but wonder how many it would take to hold your weight, ponder not — for we already sort of know the answer.

At least, we know how many won't hold it after one TikTok influencer took it upon themselves to put the Apple Pencil's load-bearing capabilities to the test. And it's painful to watch. Although perhaps not as painful as it was to make.

Thankfully, with the Apple Pencil 3 possibly just days away, this unnecessary Apple Pencil destruction shouldn't leave the influencer short of a stylus moving forward. And maybe they just wanted an excuse to treat themselves come the May 7 iPad event.

But y tho?

We won't get into the video itself too much because, frankly, you need to see it to believe it. All you need to know is that this video saw 45 different Apple Pencils put to the sword, although we'd like to know whether they really were Apple Pencils. Maybe we'll never know.

On a more positive note, the Apple Pencil 3 is expected to be announced at the May 7 event that's also like to see the new OLED iPad Pro and a refreshed iPad Air 6 lineup unveiled.

The Apple Pencil 3 is tipped to sport new squeeze gestures and more, and we cane expect to learn more about what those gestures actually do next week. Until then, hold your Apple Pencil tight and whatever you do, don't let it see that video.

Nobody deserves that.

There is no shortage of options when it comes to picking a new iPad stand. There are stands designed for just holding your iPad still while you watch your latest Apple TV Plus guilty pleasure and there are stands designed to help your iPad replace your laptop. There are stands designed for different sizes of iPad, too. But whatever category you're shopping in, some iPads are better than others. And the new INVZI MagHub 3 has the potential to be at the top of the pile.

The tablet is currently part of an Indiegogo campaign and has already managed to gather almost $500,000 across its two crowdfunding platforms. It's from INVZI, a company based in California, and certainly seems to tick all of the major boxes for most people.

That is, it'll work with iPads. But it can also be used with your Kindle and even an iPhone if you want. Anything with a screen size between 4.7 inches and 12.9 inches should be OK, which covers all of Apple's most recent models. But that's just the start.

Connect all the things

There are plenty of reasons to take a look at the MagHub 3 stand including a space for connecting your Apple Pencil and the ability to freely rotate your device. The modern, aluminum design also means that you can use the stand's arm to move your iPad into a range of positions including one that's perfect for drawing and note-taking using the aforementioned Apple Pencil. But that's not all that this stand has going for it.

At the bottom of that movable arm, you'll find a USB-C hub with a whole raft of options. Those options include 100W USB-C power delivery as well as a USB-C port with support for 5Gb/S throughput. There's also a pair of USB-A ports with the same data transfer speed as well as a Micro SD UHS-I card slot with a speed of 104MB/s and an SD card slot capable of the same speed. And we aren't done yet thanks to a 3.5mm audio jack and the most important of all, a 4K, 60Hz HDMI port.

All of that means that this stand could well take your humble iPad and turn it into a workhorse machine for connecting to an external monitor and more. And because the whole thing can fold to almost nothing, it's easily moved around. That means you can throw the stand in a bag and take it on your travels, whether that's to the office, a coworking space, or a coffee shop.

As you might expect though, all of this doesn't make the MagHub 3 cheap. It's available via Indiegogo now for $89, with the normal price set to be $149. Those who just want the stand without all of the hub ports can go that route, however, with the price falling to $49. That'll apparently cost $89 normally though, which might be enough to put some people off.

Price aside, this hub does have more going for it than most. And with the new iPad Air 6 and OLED M3 iPad Pros on the horizon, maybe it's time to treat yourself to a stand so you can make the most of your new tablet.

You can rotate the stand to be portrait or landscape, as well as being able to adjust the height so you can get the right angle.

The biggest issue here is that there's a risk of your iPad falling over — as long as you don’t go beyond Benks' recommended angle of 55 degrees. Make sure that you've bought the correct stand for your iPad, but otherwise, it's very adjustable to fit your workflow, wherever you may be.

Best for compatibility

If you constantly change between an iPad and a Mac, this stand from Twelve South could be a great option.

We've come a long way since Steve Jobs' rather frank dismissal of the idea that you might want to use a stylus with an iPad. These days, the Apple Pencil is an incredibly popular tool with creatives, and the Pencil Pro is the most advanced version yet, introducing all-new gesture controls, haptic feedback and reassuring security features. 

We really like the squeezable pressure sensor near the Pencil Pro's tip, which acts as a time-saving shortcut control that lets you access tool menus more quickly. Also great is 'Barrel Roll', which uses a new built-in gyroscopic sensor to detect when you rotate the pen in your hand. Doing so gives you more control of shaped digital pens and brushes, allowing for more realistic strokes in your art apps. Helpful haptics and Find My network support round off the suite of Pro features. And that's on top of all the great features carrying over from previous generations, like the excellent pressure sensitivity, instant pairing and magnetic charging. 

Unfortunately, the Pencil Pro is only compatible with the M4 iPad Pro and M2 iPad Air, which Apple says is due to a new magnetic charging and connection system required by the 2024 tablets, owing to the rearranged FaceTime cameras. That means that you'll need to upgrade at some expense if you want to benefit from the Pro features.

The best Apple Pencil Pro alternative

The Apple Pencil (2nd generation) is one of the pricier iPad styluses around but the cost is worth it, especially for artists. Also known as the Apple Pencil 2, the device offers fantastic pressure sensitivity, even if Apple doesn't officially reveal how many levels of pressure sensitivity it has. Such great sensitivity means it's perfect for demonstrating the different stroke pressure levels in all kinds of apps including the best iPad photo editing apps. 

The stylus really helps artists have more control over their work, especially if they're using it on one of the best iPads for artists. It's also more likely to work properly with different software because apps are designed specifically to work with it. These include big-hitters like Adobe Photoshop for iPad and Procreate. The palm rejection technology isn't perfect but makes it so the display is less likely to show marks made by hands. 

Besides the great stroke sensitivity, the Apple Pencil 2 also has the convenience of magnetic charging. There's no need to struggle with charging cables here, as the Apple Pencil 2 has a flat side that magnetically attaches to compatible iPads and charges (and pairs) that way. Owners of older iPad models or the new base-level iPad can't use the Apple Pencil 2. Instead, the best option is the Apple Pencil (1st generation). It's not as refined as the newer model as it lacks wireless charging and the magnetic attachment, but you still get exceptional pressure sensitivity. Again, Apple hasn't released figures so we can't directly compare, but anyone who uses it can confirm it's great for drawing, writing, or editing photos. It works consistently and feels the right kind of weighty in your hand.

It also costs less than the newer versions of the Apple Pencil. Sound perfect? Not quite. Its charging is truly awkward. There's a cap on the bottom of the stylus that reveals a male Lightning connection. You then need to plug it into your iPad or another female Lightning port to charge it. It's far less convenient than the magnetic method of the newer model, although you can purchase an adapter to change it to a port.

If you're looking for a reliable iPad stylus and don't need pressure sensitivity then you'll want to go with the JamJake K10. It's one of the cheapest options on the market while still being very convenient to use. Just bear in mind that you can't change stroke width based on pressure and there's no tilt stroke function for changing to a different thickness.

The battery also doesn't last as long as the official Apple Pencil, although 10 hours is still very good. It's compatible with magnetic charging so you can charge it that way, or you can use the included USB-C to USB-A charging cable to charge via the port on the side.

Its palm rejection technology isn't perfect but it still mostly only picks up on strokes made from the stylus tip rather than from your hands. It's possible to turn it off too via a tap to the bottom, while the pen comes in three colors: white, black, or pink.

The best for value

The standout feature for the Adonit Note+ is its 2,048 levels of pressure sensitivity. It works very well with drawing apps so it's ideal for artists on a budget. It isn't the least expensive option out there, but it's a great price for what it offers. Besides the impressive pressure sensitivity, it also has tilt stroke functionality to replicate the side of the pencil within compatible software.

The side of the pencil also has two programmable buttons so you can set it up to quickly swap between different tools. It's particularly helpful in apps like Photoshop for iPad or Adobe Fresco. It'd be even more useful if it was fully supported by all apps but you'll need to check the software you use supports button shortcuts. 

While there's no wireless charging, 10 hours of battery life on one charge is respectable. It can be replenished using the included USB-C to USB-A cable with the USB-C port on the bottom of the pen.

The best for school or business

The Logitech Crayon is marketed as somewhat of a child's accessory but it's a great stylus for people of any age. It's very responsive and pairs instantly to compatible iPads, so it's a highly reliable choice. It also comes in two colors with the option of a playful silver and orange or a more professional gray and silver.

There isn't pressure sensitivity but it does have tilt stroke capabilities for software that supports thicker strokes or an angular point of contact. Its palm rejection technology works well too so there's no need to worry about accidentally marking your document or selecting anything by accident with your hands.

There's no wireless charging but the bottom of the pen opens on a hinge to reveal the Lightning port for charging the stylus. Battery life is a little low compared to the competition at 7.5 hours, but if you charge between sessions, you'll be fine.

Users must remove the orange top of the stylus to replace the tip. It's not the easiest thing to do, which might make this a good choice for a children's school accessory since they won't be able to play around with the tips as easily and lose them.

If you're an artist who wants the best control over your work, you need the official Apple Pencil. Which version you buy will depend on which of the best iPads you have, as the compatibility can be a bit of a minefield. The various Apple Pencils offer the best accuracy and pressure sensitivity of any of the styluses out there, so it's worth the investment. Also, iPad drawing apps are specifically designed with these tools in mind, so you get a better experience overall.

If you're an artist on a budget then you should look into the Adonit Note+. It lacks the convenient wireless, magnetic charging of the Apple Pencil 2, but it does have 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity to help give more depth and variance to your strokes. Plus, the programmable buttons allow you to switch tools more quickly within software that supports shortcuts. 

If you just need something reliable for simple drawing, writing, or editing, the JamJake K10 Stylus Pen is a good alternative. It costs less than many of the others, while still being reliable. There's no pressure sensitivity or tilt stroke functions, but it does last up to 10 hours. It feels great to hold too.

While this is a review of the ZAGG Pro Stylus 2, not a comparison article, the question on most people’s minds will be, how does it compare to the Apple Pencil? With three Apple Pencil models out now, there’s not a simple answer but in brief: it’s likely a better option for you than the similarly priced first-generation Apple Pencil or the latest USB-C version. It might even beat out the highest-priced second generation Apple Pencil, depending on your use case.

ZAGG Pro Stylus 2: Price and availability

The ZAGG Pro Stylus 2 is $80 on ZAGG’s website and can also be found at popular retailers like Amazon and B&H Photo. It retails on the other sites for the same price, but I’ve seen several sales on certain colors knocking about $5-10 off the retail price. Speaking of color, it comes in five different shades: gray, white, blue, yellow, and pink. A spare tip and a charging cable that attaches to the stylus magnetically are included in the box.

ZAGG Pro Stylus 2: Ease of use

When you first unbox it, you’d probably want to charge it up. Pop it onto the charging cable, place it on the side of your iPad, or use a Qi charger. If you use ZAGG’s charger, a green light lets you know the stylus is charging. Unfortunately, I have not found any way to tell the battery level of the stylus itself. The green lights goes off when charging is complete.

Pairing it to your best iPad isn’t "Apple easy," but it’s easy enough. You’ll just press and hold the rounded end to enter pairing mode. Then select the ZAGG Pro Stylus from the list of devices in the Bluetooth section of the Settings app.

The rounded end can be used to turn the stylus on and off. You can also turn it on by just removing it from the charger. And it turns itself off after 15 minutes of inactivity.

The ZAGG Pro Stylus 2 is a pleasure to use. I didn’t feel any drag on my screen or any latency while drawing and writing. You can rest your hand on the screen as you use the stylus, since it has palm rejection.

ZAGG Pro Stylus 2: Build

The ZAGG Pro Stylus 2 feels good in the hand and very natural to use. The build quality is great. It’s plastic but it’s neither too light nor too heavy. It’s comfortable in the hand and feels just like a pencil (or Apple pencil.) The magnetic side is flat, which has the added benefit of not allowing it to roll off your desk. The tip feels like it should last for a very long time, but there is a spare in the box just in case. The soft, rounded end has multiple functions; it does click satisfyingly.

ZAGG Pro Stylus 2: Features

The ZAGG Pro Stylus 2 has a number of features that make it a viable alternative to the Apple Pencil. The fine tip allows for precision drawing and writing, with tilt recognition and palm rejection for a more natural user experience. The rounded capacitative tip at the other end can be used like a finger to swipe and scroll, in addition to being an on/off switch. The stylus shuts off automatically after 15 minutes of inactivity.

Interestingly, the ZAGG Pro Stylus 2 is magnetic, and can be charged with the included magnetic charger or any Qi charger you have on hand. It does attach magnetically to iPad models that allow it (such as late model versions of the iPad Pro and iPad mini) and charged that way too.

The battery lasts over six hours on a single charge, but unfortunately there is no way to see the current battery level on the stylus. When you attach it to the included magnetic charger, a green light comes on to let you know it's charging and turns off when charging is complete.

ZAGG Pro Stylus 2: Competition

The obvious competitor here is the Apple Pencil: the first generation, second-generation, and Apple Pencil USB-C. Each version of the Apple pencil has different features, and the ZAGG Pro Stylus 2 doesn't line up perfectly with any of them. The advantage that the Apple Pencils have over the ZAGG is that Apple magic, the easy pairing. The second-generation Apple Pencil can charge right on the side of the iPad like the ZAGG. The Apple Pencil 2 and USB-C support the "hover" feature, which allows you to preview before you mark, with the ZAGG does not. The Apple Pencil 2 allows you to double tap on the side of the pencil to change tools, the ZAGG does not.

But dollar per dollar, the ZAGG is one of the best Apple Pencil alternatives. For one thing, the ZAGG Pro Stylus 2 is compatible with ANY iPad model from 2018 forward. This is not the case with the Apple Pencil, which can be annoying if you have several different iPad models in the home and wish to use a single Apple Pencil amongst them. The Apple Pencil 1 and USB-C can't charge wirelessly like the ZAGG can. Really, only the Apple Pencil 2 is more feature-rich than the ZAGG Pro Stylus 2, and it's substantially more expensive.

If you have several different models in the home and want to use just one stylus between them, never fear: the ZAGG Pro Stylus 2 works with any iPad from 2018 forward. The ZAGG Pro Stylus 2 is an excellent alternative to the Apple Pencil for just about anyone, unless you need the extra features of the pricier Apple Pencil 2. When compared to the original Apple Pencil and the Apple Pencil USB-C, the ZAGG is a comparable if not outright better pick with tilt sensitivity, palm rejection, and pixel precision.

If you're someone who owns an iPad and an Apple Pencil, you're no doubt already very aware of the panic that sets in whenever you want to use the two things together. Even if you have an iPad with magnetic Apple Pencil 2 support, it just never quite seems to be attached to the side of that tablet, does it? And if you think that your keys are great at hiding in the smallest of places, you haven't seen anything yet.

Losing an Apple Pencil between the sofa cushions is a regular occurrence for a lot of iPad users and that's if they're lucky. Other times that little white stylus could be just about anywhere, and usually is. So the idea of being able to quickly and easily locate it using Apple's Find My features is one that we can all get behind. The latest USB-C Apple Pencil doesn't have Find My support, unfortunately. But a future Apple Pencil 3 might just add it according to a new report.

That report comes thanks to the recent iOS 17.4 beta release with internal files apparently suggesting that a future Apple Pencil will have support for the Find My app on iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches.

Lost and found

Reported by 9to5Mac, the additional Find My support could work in a similar way to other Find My-enabled accessories and devices like the AirTag and other item trackers. However, it isn't clear just how capable the Find My integration will be because we don't know if ultra wideband technology will be included. If it is, precise location information can be gathered and an iPhone with the same chip will be able to locate the Apple Pencil in the same way it can an AirTag.

However, if ultra wideband is not present the capabilities will be limited and may simply amount to the Apple Pencil making a sound when the owner presses a button in the Find My app. However, at this point, it seems unlikely that Apple would release a new $100+ product without UWB included, but time will tell.

The report also notes that the iPadOS 17.4 beta added a newly updated PencilKit API which will allow developers to make apps that make use of new Apple Pencil features. However, there is no indication of what features they will be just yet. However, the updated API does suggest that the new Apple Pencil 3 will have additional features rather than simply be a revamped Apple Pencil 2.

Previous rumors have claimed that the Apple Pencil 3 could have interchangeable magnetic tips to give creatives more flexibility, although we haven't heard much to that effect in a few months now.

2024 is shaping up to be a big year for the iPad as a whole. Not only are we expecting the entire lineup to be updated but a whole new 13-inch iPad Air is on the horizon. Couple that with new OLED iPad Pro models with superfast M3 chips and big things are expected of Apple's tablets this year. A refreshed 10.9-inch iPad Air is also touted with all four iPad Air and iPad Pro models expected to debut within months according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. If a new Apple Pencil really is in the works we could likely expect it to be announced alongside those new iPads, too.

The Apple Pencil deal you should actually buy

The Apple AirTag is among the best item trackers around, although there are AirTag alternatives if you want something different. But if there's one thing that they aren't that great at, it's getting new firmware updates.

While it's probably true that something as simple as a little coin-sized item tracker doesn't need all that many updates — they won't get new functionality very often, after all — it's perhaps notable that the last AirTag update was in December 2022.

However, there's new software on the way right now although you might not have it just yet. The AirTag firmware build number 2A61 is on its way out to users right now, but it's rolling out in a staggered way which means you might have to wait a little while before you'll see it.

Coming soon-ish

MacRumors reports that while we don't yet know what the new firmware has to offer, we do know that it's being rolled out slowly. "One percent of users will get the update today [November 1], and then it will expand to 10 percent of users on November 7. On November 14, an additional 25 percent of users will see the update, and then it will be available to all on November 28," the report notes.

There is of course no way to manually force an AirTag to update its firmware, which means that your only course of action is to kick back and wait for it to appear on your AirTag.

As for checking what version of AirTag firmware you're currently running, you can do that in the Find My app by choosing the item tracker and then tapping its name to reveal its firmware version and serial number.

More choice is always a good thing and there's now another iPad stylus to check out when you're looking at the Apple Pencil and Apple Pencil 2. The ZAGG Pro Stylus 2 is here, and it's well worth a look.

The new stylus is available in a range of different colors including gray, yellow, white, blue, and red. But that isn't all that makes the new stylus stand out when compared with Apple's first-party option.

Unlike the Apple Pencil, ZAGG's Pro Stylus 2 has a dual-tip design that includes a universal capacitive tip on one end for scrolling and a thinner active tip at the other for sketching, writing, and more.

Cheaper and better?

ZAGG announced the new stylus via press release, noting that it can magnetically attach to the iPad Pro and also supports wireless charging via an included cradle. A full charge gets you up to six and a half hours of use and the stylus automatically turns itself off after 15 minutes of inactivity.

All of the best iPad stylus features are also included like tilt recognition and palm rejection on Apple's latest iPad Pro tablets.

“With the Pro Stylus 2, ZAGG continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of mobile accessories,” Brad Bell, senior vice president of global marketing for ZAGG said via press release. “With its dual-tip functionality, advanced features such as tilt recognition and palm rejection technology, and the convenience of wireless charging, the Pro Stylus 2 allows users to unlock their creativity and maximize productivity."

The new Pro Stylus 2 is available now for just $79.99 and can be had direct from the company's website. Considering the dual-tip feature and the fact the Apple Pencil 2 retails for $129, this could be a stylus well worth considering the next time you're in the market for one.

A future Apple Pencil could be capable of measuring the color and texture of any surface that it touches if a new patent is any indication.

The patent, which was published by the US Patent & Trademark Office at the very end of 2022 and spotted by Patently Apple, allows for an Apple Pencil with built-in optical sensors that would be able to measure any surface that it comes into contact with, perhaps then allowing an iPad app to replicate it on-screen.

Apple's patent makes allowances for the Apple Pencil to transmit the information it collects wirelessly to a computer or tablet, likely an iPad Pro.

Apple Pencil Pro

This isn't the first time that an Apple Pencil patent has pointed to new color-based features, of course. A similar Apple Patent from way back in 2019 suggested the company was working on a new Apple Pencil that would include an LED or LCD display. It was suggested that the display could alert users as to the color that would be applied when the Apple Pencil was used.

However, when used in conjunction with this latest patent, it's possible such a display could also highlight the color that the Apple Pencil detected via its sensors.

What's more, this isn't even the first time that reports of a color-sensing Apple Pencil have surfaced. In 2020, a patent pointed to exactly that. However, more than two years later, no such Apple Pencil has shipped.

As ever it's important to remember that Apple patents don't always equate to shipping products or features, as may well be the case here. Apple has its engineers patent many technologies and ideas each and every year, with only a few shipping as part of the products that the company sells.

Apple hasn't updated the Apple Pencil in more than four years, however, and it's possible that a tweaked version could arrive in the future. But whether it will feature any kind of color or texture-sensing technology, we'll just have to wait and see.

Of course, protection is important. But do you need to protect the screen, the edges, the back, or all three? This will depend on how you use your iPad, but generally, all-over protection is ideal. However, you might be willing to sacrifice some amount of shielding in order to have a sleeker, lighter case. You also might slide your iPad and its case into a sleeve for further protection while traveling. Ultimately, that's up to you, so consider how you use (and potentially misuse) your best iPad. 

First and foremost, you'll want to make sure that the case you're choosing is compatible with your iPad model. Don't guess and figure it will be "close enough," a case that doesn't fit properly or allow your iPad to function properly is no protection at all. Then you just want to choose the level of protection, form factor, and style that works best for you. Remember that many of the styles that you see under one iPad section are also available for other iPad models as well, check the listing to find out. If a particular case is good for one model, it's good for all of the models. 

When it comes to choosing the best case for your needs, it's always a good idea to keep in mind how you'll be using your iPad. Consider any added functionality that might be useful for you. Many cases have a folding a stand to prop up your iPad at various angles. An 11-inch sleeve, for example, will fit any 11-inch (or 10-inch for that matter) iPad model. A 13-inch sleeve will literally fit any iPad at all, though of course it won't be so snug for smaller models.

Obviously, a sleeve only protects your iPad as long as the iPad is inside, so it's more for protection during transport than use. But many sleeves have enough space for the iPad in a case, so it's double protection on the go.

Not really. We also like less expensive designs from tried and true brands like tomtoc, ESR, Spigen, and more. We often use these cases from cheaper brands in our personal lives and they suit us just fine. As long as you get the features you need, whether it's drop protection, Sleep/Wake functionality, a folding stand, a keyboard, an Apple Pencil holder, or whatever, the price doesn't always mean a better case. Choose the case that suits your budget and style.

In the last decade, the iPad and Apple Pencil have worked together to provide a far more convenient creating experience that many artists take advantage of. It's no wonder, given that Apple's devices offer pressure sensitivity that gives creatives control over their projects in much the same way that graphics tablets do. The only downside to this setup is the cost. 

Of course, the latest iPads cost a pretty penny due to all they offer, and for some people, spending an additional $130 for the Apple Pencil 2 is hard to swallow. That's why so many iPad users turn to the vast number of Apple Pencil alternatives on the market. 

I recently had the opportunity to test the NovaPlus Pencil A8 Duo, the latest model from a company that has produced several iPad-compatible styluses. In the 15 hours I spent trying it, I came to find that it has impressive responsiveness, and the magnetic wireless charging is just as convenient as the Apple Pencil 2. However, while it will make for a tremendous economic stylus, it's not an excellent choice for serious artists or those who want to try and become one.

NovaPlus Pencil A8 Duo: Price and availability

The NovaPlus Pencil A8 Duo just recently began its funding campaign on Indiegogo. Usually, this device costs $69.99, roughly half the cost of the Apple Pencil 2. However, at the time of writing, the campaign has a deal that allows buyers to get it for 28% off at just $49.99. There's another campaign deal where buyers can get two A8 Duos for $90.99, which is 34% off. 

Many of NovaPlus' previous stylus models are available on Amazon, so it's possible the A8 Duo could find its way there in the future. 

NovaPlus Pencil A8 Duo: What's good

When I first pulled the NovaPlus A8 Duo out of the box, I quickly noticed that it was the same shape and size as the Apple Pencil 2. It even has the same flat side, making the stylus easier to grip than the original Apple Pencil's completely round design. Overall, I found that the A8 Duo felt good in my hands, and the physical structure of it never distracted me while I was writing or drawing. 

I tested the A8 Duo on my iPad Air by using the Note app in order to gauge its writing effectiveness before turning to Adobe Fresco to check how well it worked with iPad drawing apps. The responsiveness of the A8 Duo was always on point and never lead to any lag. Additionally, the stroke moved exactly as I moved and never jumped to another place on the document I was working on. In that way, it's very reliable and can be counted on for basic stylus functions. The tip is designed to look and feel very much like the Apple Pencil 2's and in case you wear it down a second tip is included in the box.

Charging options and battery life

Unlike Apple's stylus, the A8 Duo offers two different charging options, allowing it to work with a broader range of iPads. By removing the cap on the side, I gain access to a USB-C port and can use the included USB to USB-C cable to charge it. A ring of light at the base of the stylus changes color to indicate if it is charging or full.

I found a problem with this cabled-charging method: I often misplaced the cap while the A8 Duo charged, usually because my cats would find the piece of plastic and bat it onto the floor. Therefore, keeping the cap in place when not in use is crucial to protect the inner exposed area of the stylus. Because of that, I preferred to use the A8 Duo's other charging option, but that might not be possible depending on what iPad you're using.

The flat side of the A8 Duo is a magnetic charging area. Like the Apple Pencil 2, it magnetically attaches to my iPad Air and receives a charge while in place, so I can keep the battery up without having to deal with cables. However, the handy battery life indicator on my iPad display when I attach the Apple Pencil 2 does not appear with the A8 Duo. 

Apple Pencil 2 and A8 Duo have a battery life of up to 12 hours. Even when I was using NovaPlus' latest stylus for hours, it didn't waver or have any issues. Since I took the time to charge it back up between sessions, it never had a problem with running out of juice. 

Another thing to note is that when I first attempted to use the A8 Duo on my iPad, I couldn't get it to work even though it was connected via Bluetooth. However, I soon learned that this was because my Apple Pencil 2 was also connected. Once I told the iPad to forget Apple's stylus, the A8 Duo worked as intended. So if you have an Apple Pencil already and want a NovaPlus stylus as a backup, you'll need to disconnect the Apple Pencil first. 

NovaPlus Pencil A8 Duo: What's bad

One of the first things I did with the NovaPlus A8 Duo was open Adobe Fresco and test out different brushes. It very quickly became apparent that while the A8 Duo can sense when I'm using the side of the stylus versus the tip and changes the stroke type accordingly, there isn't any pressure sensitivity. 

This means that artists have less control over their strokes since each comes out at maximum strength rather than varying with the pressure applied. Depending on the drawing program and the brush used, some can build upon each other, but not at the same rate that professional designers and artists find helpful. If you want to create minute and nuanced differences with each movement, then the A8 Duo will not serve your purpose. 

NovaPlus Pencil A8 Duo: Competition

The biggest competitor against the NovaPlus Pencil A8 Duo is the Apple Pencil 2. As previously illustrated, NovaPlus' stylus doesn't offer pressure sensitivity, which seriously limits the control and effects users can make in drawing software. The Apple Pencil 2 is stunning and allows artists to create different strokes for the look they want. If you're a serious artist or are hoping to become one, it's better to stick with the Apple Pencil 2 so you learn the muscle control needed to create just the proper strokes. 

NovaPlus Pencil A8 Duo: Should you buy it?

You should buy this if...

• You want a stylus for writing on iPad.

The fanciest iPad cover I've tested yet

I have tested quite a few iPad cases for review, most recently on my iPad mini 6, and I've had a couple of pain points: I'm not particularly eager to put a case that looks or feels cheap on my iPad, and I don't appreciate it when my iPad falls over on my face while I'm trying to read in bed (which is what I actually my iPad for most.) The DODOcase Noblessa Leather iPad Case solves both of those issues. Obviously, it looks and feels like the elegant case it is. The inside is lined with lovely plush suede. The chamfered corners are a nice touch.

But more importantly, it functions well. I can prop it up at two different angles, and it stays put, even when I'm reading in bed. It even has Sleep/Wake functionality so I don't have to remember to turn my iPad on and off. It does have a loop for the Apple Pencil, though I don't have one so I can't say how well it works. I tested the loop with a pen, which was held in place nicely.

However, it's not perfect. I probably won't use it when I travel, because it is a fairly bulky case. It does have an elastic band to hold the case closed because otherwise, it wouldn't stay shut, which is annoying. Not only is putting it on and off an extra step, but it just hangs there when not in use. I wasn't thrilled to see two round bumps on the inside flap of the folio, which might be magnets, but they are clearly visible and easily felt through the interior suede. And the price is pretty high; it's always hard to say if it's "worth it" for someone else because of course you can get perfectly good cases for less.

DODOcase Noblessa Leather iPad Case: Competition

We reviewed the Mous iPad case, which is a high-end ultra-protective case. It's made of high-quality materials and functions very well, yet it's just about half the price of the DODOcase.

I also like the Fintie Folio iPad case quite a bit. Though it lacks the refined elegance of the DODOcase, it looks quite nice, and it's similar functionally. It comes in at about one-tenth the price of the DODOcase.

I am always on the lookout for the best cases for my iPad mini 6, and I was looking specifically for a high-end case that I would take to a business meeting, for example. This one certainly fits the bill — it dresses your iPad to impress for sure. Both the inside and outside look and feel amazing. I tested it out for several weeks and it worked really well for me. The viewing angles are sturdy, so your iPad is difficult to tip over. The Sleep/Wake functionality is nice and the Apple Pencil loop holds a stylus in place securely. However, the elastic loop that holds the folio closed just sort of hangs around unattractively when not in use, which isn't my favorite. Finally, the price is pretty high, and it's hard to justify no matter how fancy the leather is.

The best Apple Pencil alternative for you isn’t just dependent on the type of iPad you have but your needs and your budget. It comes with replaceable pen tips, can be turned on and off with a handy switch at the top of the pen, and even has a magnet, allowing it to stick to the side of the iPad Air 4 and 5, as well as the 2022 iPad Pro. Unfortunately, it does not have wireless charging but it can be charged with a handy USB-C port at the top and an LED display gives you an idea of how much battery is left in the pencil. 

The MKQ Stylus has palm rejection meaning you won’t accidentally draw with your hand while holding it, and tilt sensitivity allows for different degrees of thickness as you draw. These come together to make a pencil that is expressive and easy to use. Unfortunately, that price does come with some downsides and the MKQ is missing pressure sensitivity, which means that you can’t fully take advantage of the best drawing apps for iPad. However, it is excellent value for the money. 

It helps that the MKQ Stylus is both light and looks great. The LED on the side indicates when it is on so you will never miss a clean brush stroke by forgetting to active your stylus ever again. This is a particularly good option if you live in a house with multiple artists. You can get a handful of MKQ styli for the same price as an Apple Pencil. 

Best for note-taking

Logitech’s Crayon is a very stylish choice and perfect for both artists and writer. It feels great in the hand, and has a handy switch at the very top to turn it off and on. You will want to use this switch as the comparably lower 7 hours of battery time makes this one of the shortest-lasting on our entire list.  However, it charges up quickly again and comes with LED lights to give battery life indications. It will also automatically shut off after five minutes of idling, which should help to extend that battery life further. 

With both palm rejection and tilt sensitivity, Logitech’s Crayon has all of the major functions you would want out of an iPad stylus and even comes with a free accessory case when you purchase it with the Logitech Combo Touch, one of the best iPad Air 5 keyboard cases right now. 

With a build designed to stay put on a desk and a very durable quality, this is perfect for taking notes. It also works on multiple tablets at once, which means you can collaborate with others without having to pair it to specific devices. It is specifically designed with the Apple Pencil in mind, so isn’t missing any of the features you can find in the Apple Pencil 2. 

Best without charging

Adonit’s Pro 4 stylus is the most unique choice on this entire list, and technically the cheapest too. It is simply a pen, with a clip on the top to fit onto a clipboard and a unique tip, with a round shape encasing the nib itself. All of this comes together to create a device that doesn’t even use power. You don’t need to worry about it running out of charge and it’s super low price point means you don’t need to be quite as cautious about losing it. 

Unfortunately, due to it not being electronic, you miss out on fancy features like palm rejection and it can sometimes be a little less precise than our other choices but it makes up for this in its sheer simplicity. If you are someone who forgets to put things on charge or are worried about your Pencil breaking in a backpack, this is an excellent choice thanks to its build quality and design. 

Available in Black, with gold trim, Silver, and all Gold, it has both a super luxurious look and feel. This is a niche Apple Pencil alternative but perfect if you want something easy and comfortable to use without all the fancy features of an Apple Pencil.

The Apple Pencil: your official option

Still, I wouldn't entirely discount the idea of an Apple Pencil. It is, after all, specially designed for your iPad by Apple engineers, so no stylus is going to work better. If you can get a good deal on an Apple Pencil, it can be pretty close in price to the alternatives. 

The second-generation and USB-C Apple Pencil models do offer some exclusive features, such as Apple Pencil hover. This feature allows you preview your mark before you touch the screen. 

To be honest, I was skeptical about the MKQ Stylus when I first came across it. How could an iPad stylus be so inexpensive? I decided to try it out, however, since my kids will also be using it, and they have been known to lose or break my gadgets. Now I'm glad I did! This little pen does everything I need it to do, and for a surprisingly low price.

I'm no digital artist, but I use the iPad stylus for photo editing, jotting down notes, and making silly doodles for family and friends. My kids use it even more than I do, and now they love to use the MKQ for drawing and illustration apps on the iPad. With more expensive products like the Apple Pencil, I hesitate to let my kids use them; but with the price of the MKQ Stylus, I can afford to buy one for each of my kids to use whenever they like.

The MKQ Stylus Pen is available on Amazon for the surprisingly low price of $22. This is the lowest price I've seen for an iPad Stylus that offers most of the same features as an Apple Pencil. When compared to the price of the original Apple Pencil, you can't beat it.

MKQ Stylus Pen: The practical pen for iPad

There's plenty to like about the simple little MKQ Stylus, beyond just the low price tag. It works out of the box, no need for pairing. You just pop it out, tap the button on the end, and it's ready to work with any stylus-enabled iPad. When you turn it on, a number lights up on the side to show the remaining battery life. This is a helpful indicator that I haven't seen on other iPad styli. Unlike others I've used, this one will not just shut off suddenly when it's out of battery. The indicator light lets you know how much battery is left every time it's switched on or off.

I've used the MKQ Stylus to jot down notes using the Scribble feature on iPad, as well as to edit photos and draw some simple doodles. My kids have used it to draw in the Sketches app and so far, the MKQ Pen works just as well as any other iPad stylus when it comes to sensitivity and precision. It recognizes gestures and tilt as well, and it ignores the touch of your palm on the screen. With this stylus, you won't need a special glove.

The MKQ Stylus comes with three replacement tips that are easy to take on and off. This is especially useful when you have kids that love to lose things. And since it supports magnetic connection, you can attach this pen easily to the magnetic connectors of an iPad Pro. It does not support wireless charging though, which brings me to the next section.

MKQ Stylus Pen: No pressure

Although the MKQ Stylus Pen will connect magnetically to the iPad Pro, it will not charge there. This is one drawback to buying the affordable MKQ; the more expensive Apple Pencil does come with wireless charging via the magnetic connectors on the iPad Pro. For the MKQ, on the other hand, you will need to charge it with the included USB-C cable.

There's also no pressure sensitivity with this stylus. While it does support tilt and gesture sensitivity, it does not reflect user pressure. If pressure sensitivity is important to your illustration game, this is not the stylus for you. Other than that, it functions very similarly to any other iPad pen.

MKQ Stylus Pen: Competition

Although the MKQ does seem to sport the lowest price tag of any iPad stylus I've seen, there are other alternatives to the Apple Pencil. I have also used and reviewed the SwitchEasy EasyPencil for the iPad, and it has a very similar performance to the MKQ. They both support tilt sensitivity and magnetic connection, but neither supports wireless charging. The major difference here is price and availability. The EasyPencil is almost double the price of the MKQ, although it is available for purchase in more locations. The MKQ is only available for purchase on Amazon.

MKQ Stylus Pen: Should you buy it?

• You're looking for an affordable iPad stylus.
• Your kids like to use (and possibly lose or abuse) your gadgets.
• You like your stylus to display remaining battery life.

• Pressure sensitivity is important to you.
• You need wireless charging support.

Although this iPad stylus from MKQ will work for anyone, I think it's especially useful in family environments where multiple kids need their own styli. Because of its super affordable price tag, you can buy one for each child in the family. Then if it becomes lost or broken, it won't be quite as painful as it would be to lose the much more expensive Apple Pencil. I wouldn't suggest the MKQ for professional illustrators who need pressure sensitivity, however. For that, you may want to cash out for the real deal.

Although the MKQ Stylus Pen for iPad is not quite as feature-rich as some high-end iPad styli, this one performs most writing, drawing, and editing tasks with precision. It's easy to use and requires zero setup, which is nice if you're giving it to kids. The MKQ comes with three extra tips and displays the remaining battery right on the pen, so you'll never be caught by surprise. When it comes to bang for your buck, you can't beat this iPad stylus from MKQ.

There may be many reasons you're wondering how to fix your Apple Pencil. Maybe you've been bought it as a gift and haven't quite figured it out yet? Maybe you're a pro who has come across a niche problem that can be solved quickly. The Apple Pencil, with a good battery and great feel, is an excellent accessory for any iPad creative but it is a good bit more complicated than a traditional pencil.

As of right now, there are three unique versions of the Apple Pencil available on the market, all with their own quirks. However, once it stops working, it can be easy to feel like you have an expensive paperweight. That's where iMore comes in. This is everything you need to know if you're looking to fix your Apple pencil.

Step 1: Tighten the nib

The Apple Pencil's nib comes off because it can (and will) wear down over time, and you'll need to swap it out. There is a replacement nib that comes with every Apple Pencil 1, though not the other two, unfortunately. Because it can be replaced, it means it can also loosen. And a loose pencil nib means the iPad won't be able to communicate with the Apple Pencil properly. You can get a 4 pack of Apple Pencil tips from the Apple Store for $19.

Be sure your Apple Pencil nib is tight if it stops responding. You can tighten it just by twisting the nib clockwise. It doesn't take much effort, and you should never have to apply much pressure. Just make sure it's on and tightened properly.

Step 2: Recharge

Next, we need to ensure your Apple Pencil's battery is charged. It's the silliest thing, but it happens. Pull down Notification Center and look for your Apple Pencil under Batteries.

If you've entirely run out of battery or haven't used your Pencil recently, it may take up to ten minutes for your stylus to properly charge and appear in Notification Center. So don't panic if you don't see it immediately; it make take some time for your Apple Pencil to charge up.

If you've charged your Apple Pencil for more than 20 minutes and still don't see it appear in Notification Center, keep reading.

Step 3: Reboot

Sometimes, it's not the Apple Pencil's fault, but the iPad's, and an excellent old-fashioned reboot can help get both up and running again. You can turn your iPad on and off or hard reset your iPad if necessary. Either way, it should get things working again if the problem is relatively minor.

How to restart an iPad with a Home button

1. Press and hold down the top button.
2. Drag the slider.
3. Wait 30 seconds for your iPad to turn off.
4. Press and hold down the top button until you see the Apple logo.

How to reset an iPad without a Home button

1. Press and hold the top button and either volume button on your iPad.
2. Continue holding them as the screen turns off.
3. Continue holding them until you see the Apple logo.
4. Release the buttons.

Step 4: Re-pair

If you find your Apple Pencil not working, it could be time to check your Bluetooth settings to make sure the Pencil's connected — and if not, then reconnect it. Alternatively, you can unpair your Apple Pencil and then re-pair it to your iPad; sometimes, that helps shake off a weird connection and fixes issues.

Is it worth it to get a controller for mobile games?

Whether you play games on Apple Arcade, make use of emulators on iOS, or access games on your iOS device in another way, a controller can make the experience more comfortable and convenient.

You can choose between mobile controllers that basically turn your iPhone or iPad into a Switch-like device with controls on either side of the screen or you can purchase a more traditional controller that is completely separate. Here are some situations where having a controller is beneficial.

You frequently play mobile games: If you play platformers, open-world games, or anything that requires more control, a gamepad will improve the situation. For instance, Ocean Horn 2 and Monster Hunter Stories on Apple Arcade are better with a controller.

The games you play support controllers: Not all iOS games require a controller. For instance, puzzle games like Candy Crush Saga are usually better played with your fingertips and often don't support gamepads. You can check to see what kind of controllers a game or service supports (if it does at all) and then you'll want to purchase a compatible option.

If you subscribe to Xbox Cloud Gaming (xCloud): Now that Xbox's incredible subscription library is available on iOS, members have access to more intensive games, which often include more intensive menus and controls. An Xbox controller is better suited to handling these tasks, but others can be used as well.

You play online multiplayers: If you're playing online multiplayers and battle royales like Call of Duty Mobile, you'll really benefit from having an actual controller. Controllers not only make your device more comfortable to hold, but they also make it easier to press buttons and access menus. Plus, those well-placed buttons and rubber-tipped joysticks can help you react faster to an opponent's attacks without your thumbs blocking your view.

You're using PlayStation Remote Play: The PS4 and PS5 allows for Remote Play on iOS. If you're taking advantage of this ability, then you'll want to use a PS4 or PS4 controller.

Best controllers for iPhone and iPad

There are two types of controllers: attached mobile controllers and the more traditional console controllers. Mobile controllers attach directly to your iPhone or iPad, effectively turning them into a Switch-like device with buttons on either side of the screen. Meanwhile, console controllers are separate from the iOS device and were often made with Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, or PC in mind. You'll need to use Bluetooth to connect the two together.

Best attached mobile controllers for iPhone

If you usually play on your iPhone and are looking for a controller that attaches to it then the best choice is the Backbone One. It was specifically designed for iPhones. In fact, there isn't even an Android version. Just slide your phone into position and then both sides of the controller will hold it in place. The included Backbone One software also helps compile all of your games into one place for easy access.

Other popular choices that I recommend are the Razer Kishi V2 for iPhone or the GameSir X2 Lightning.

Best separate controllers for iPhone and iPad

Console controllers are perfect for when you're playing on iPad and they're a great choice for iPhones too. I recommend going with either the Xbox One controller or the PS4 DualShock Controller. There are heated debates over which one is the most comfortable to hold, but it's really a matter of preference. The Xbox One controller does offer better colors and designs, in my opinion.

There are also accessories like the Otterbox Mobile Gaming Clip that allow you to attach your iPhone to the controller for easy viewing.

Controller basics: Understanding buttons and joysticks

If you haven't really used a controller before or it's been a while then there are some things to note. Every controller is different and might have buttons that don't do anything on mobile devices. Additionally, you must check with each individual game to see what controllers it supports.

When a controller has two joysticks, the left joystick is usually for controlling the character while the right one is usually for moving the camera to different positions. Learning to skillfully wield both at the same time can take a bit of practice, however, it can also allow you to quickly take in a situation and understand what options are available to you. Just note that not all games give you camera control.

The D-pad is usually located on the left side of a controller and somewhat resembles a plus sign. Some games won't use this at all, however, it might be necessary for others. For instance, there are games where the D-pad controls a specific menu. Not to mention that when playing sidescrolling platformers, sometimes the D-pad gives you better control than the joysticks do. Be patient and allow yourself to experiment. You'll get better with practice.

Play whatever way is most comfortable

Regardless of which one you use, a controller can make your gaming sessions far more convenient and comfortable on iPhone and iPad. Check with the gaming services and games you like to play to understand if it does support controllers and note which ones specifically can be used.

SwitchEasy Origami Case: Like a Smart Cover but better

The coolest thing about this case is clearly the folding stand. Embedded magnets allow it to be folded into different shapes that can be used to prop the iPad up into four different viewing positions. These include portrait, landscape, a lower landscape configuration, and a slightly elevated typing position. Each of these positions have their own individual uses, for example, I like portrait mode for video calls and landscape mode for watching movies. The lower landscape position is great for drawing.

Speaking of drawing, the Origami case is made to work with a stylus, such as the SwitchEasy EasyPencil Pro 3. Unfortunately, my 10.2-inch iPad does not support magnetic mounting or charging of the Apple Pencil, but the case makes up for this by including a dedicated strap for the stylus instead. There is a small magnetic flap that folds over the Apple Pencil to keep it firmly in place while you're on the go. This flap also serves to prevent the case from falling open as you carry it around.

The same folding stand that props the iPad up doubles as a protective cover for the iPad screen. It supports auto sleep/wake functionality, which is always a nice touch. Like the Apple Smart Cover, it is lined with a soft microfiber to keep your screen snug and safe. This iPad case does offer some protection, with its magnetic cover and raised edges around the screen and camera, but I'm not sure it could be classified as heavy-duty protection. I'll touch on that a little more in the next section.

Finally, I find this iPad case to be simple, sleek, and attractive. My own case is the classic black and gray design to go with my Space Gray iPad, but I like that this case comes in many fun colors. You can buy it in a variety of shades such as Pink Sand or Spring Green. I love having a range of choices to choose from, and this brand definitely delivers on that front.

SwitchEasy Origami Case: Confusing at first

I have to say that it did take me a minute to figure out this case at first. There aren't any instructions (maybe most people don't need instructions? 😳) so I had to mess around with the folding cover for awhile before I figured how to achieve each stand position. Every position requires a different type of fold, hence the name, Origami. Once you've got it down, however, it's easy to work with.

The only other thing is that I'm not sure this case is meant to provide heavy-duty protection. This is something I'm always concerned about since my kids do use my iPad on a regular basis. So far, it is holding up well, but this sleek case is certainly not as rugged as others I have used. This is a very cool case, but I'm not convinced it is the best choice for rough kids. The average user probably does not lend their iPad to wild children like mine, so this may not be an issue for most.

SwitchEasy Origami Protective Case: Competition

The most similar case I've seen to the Origami is a case by Moshi called the VersaCover. This one also features a folding stand that can prop the iPad in multiple viewing angles. The VersaCover supports auto sleep/wake functionality as well, but it only has three viewing angles as opposed to the four angles offered by the Origami. The VersaCover is also $15 more expensive, so the Origami seems to be the better choice in my opinion.

SwitchEasy Origami Case: Should you buy it?

The SwitchEasy Origami is an innovative iPad Case with a lot to offer. It supports four different viewing angles for every possible use of the iPad, from scrolling and making video calls to drawing and typing. The case supports magnetic charging of the Apple Pencil 2 or a dedicated stylus slot, depending on your iPad model. It also has a magnetic flap to keep the Apple Pencil secure while you carry the iPad about. While this is not the most protective iPad case I've seen, it is plenty protective enough to prevent everyday bumps and scratches.

Meet the Apple Pencil

If you've used a different stylus on your iPad or graphics tablet, you may find some parts of the Apple Pencil very familiar and some very different. 

It's worth remembering there are three different versions of the Apple Pencil. Their names are similar, they're all white, and they have nearly the same dimensions. However, none of them are supported on all iPads, so be sure to check compatibility before you make a purchase.

The Apple Pencil (1st generation) delighted users with its natural, pen-like feel. Like all Apple Pencil models, it has palm rejection, tilt control, and little to no noticeable lag time. It also has pressure sensitivity, which the newest model lacks. While it's getting a bit long in the tooth at this point, it's still an excellent product. Depending on which iPad you own, it might be the only compatible Apple Pencil you can buy.

The Apple Pencil (2nd generation) was a step up from the first generation, and remains the best pick for a lot of users. It has both pressure and tilt sensitivity, lets you hover to preview your mark, double-tap to change tools, and it attaches magnetically to for wireless charging on the side of your iPad.

The Apple Pencil USB-C is a bit of a swerve. It's not a step up from the previous models, rather, it's being marketed as a budget model. Priced lower than the other two, older models, it lacks features like pressure sensitivity. While it can attach magnetically to the side of your iPad, it can't charge that way. The top opens to reveal a USB-C port for charging. The USB-C port is key; this model Apple Pencil is compatible with every iPad model that sports a USB-C port, meaning you can use the same charging cable. This includes all the best iPad models from the lower end iPad 10th generation to the high-end M2 iPad Pro as well as the iPad Air 5 and iPad mini 6 in between.

How to tell the difference

The 1st-generation Apple Pencil has a silver band around the top. The 2nd-generation Apple Pencil and Apple Pencil USB-C do not. Additionally, the top of the Apple Pencil USB-C can be pulled open to reveal the USB-C port; the other two Apple Pencil models do not open that way.

Also, the 2nd gen and USB-C Apple Pencil models have a matte finish and one flat side, while the 1st gen Apple Pencil has a smooth and shiny finish, and is completely round. The second-generation and USB-C Apple Pencils have the words "Apple Pencil" written on its flat side. The first-generation Apple Pencil has a removable cap that exposes a Lightning connector to pair and charge the Pencil, while the second-generation Apple Pencil pairs and charges magnetically so doesn't need a Lightning connector nor a USB-C port. The original Apple pencil is about a half-inch longer than the other two.

Before you get started, make sure you know which generation Apple Pencil you have. Where there are differences in the two (like pairing and charging), we've included sections for each generation separately.

How to pair your Apple Pencil with your iPad

Before using your Apple Pencil, you need to pair it to your iPad. The first and second-generation styluses pair differently, so make sure you know your generation before beginning.

How to pair the first-generation Apple Pencil

1. Make sure the iPad you want to use is on and unlocked, then uncap your Pencil.
2. Plug in your Pencil to the new iPad.
3. When the Bluetooth Pairing Request appears, tap Pair.

How to pair the second-generation Apple Pencil

1. Make sure the iPad you want to use is on and unlocked.
2. Place the Apple Pencil on the wide side of the iPad Pro with the magnetic strip.
3. Tap Pair when the Bluetooth Pairing Request appears.

How to pair the Apple Pencil USB-C 

1. Make sure the iPad you want to use is on and unlocked.
2. Pull open the top of the Apple Pencil.
3. Plug one end of a USB-C to USB-C cable into your iPad.
4. Plug the other end of your USB-C to USB-C cable into the Apple Pencil.
5. Tap Pair when the Bluetooth Pairing Request appears.

Your Apple Pencil is now paired with your iPad. If you want to move your Pencil to a different iPad, follow the same steps with the new tablet.

How to check the Apple Pencil battery level

The Apple Pencil doesn't have a LED light or physical charging indicator on its body, so you need to check its current battery life via your currently-paired iPad.

How to check your first generation or USB-C Apple Pencil battery level

1. Swipe down from the iPad's top bezel to invoke Notification Center (or turn the iPad on to view the Lock screen).
2. Swipe right to see the Widgets screen.
3. View the Batteries section.

4. If you don't see the Batteries section, you may first need to tap Edit at the bottom of the Widgets area and tap the green Plus button next to Batteries to add it as an active widget.

How to check the Apple Pencil (second generation) battery level

With the second-generation Apple Pencil, it's even easier to check the battery life. It's possible to still follow the same steps for the first-generation Apple Pencil, but you can also simply place the stylus on the magnetic charging strip on your iPad. From there, you'll see a notification pop up and tell you the current battery percentage.

How to charge Apple Pencil

You'll see a charging warning when your Apple Pencil drops to 20%, 10%, and 5%, respectively. It's also possible to check the current battery status at any point by bringing up the Notification Center.

The Apple Pencil models all charge differently, so make sure which model you have before reading on.

How to charge the first-generation Apple Pencil 

1. Remove the cap from your Apple Pencil. If you're worried about losing the cap during the charging process, you can magnetically attach it to the iPad next to the Home button.
2. Insert your Apple Pencil's Lightning connector into your iPad or iPad Pro's Lightning port.

How to charge the first-generation Apple Pencil using the Lightning adapter

1. Remove the cap from the back of your Apple Pencil.
2. Insert your Apple Pencil's Lightning connector into the Lightning adapter.
3. Plug the Lightning adapter into your Lightning cable.

How to charge the second-generation Apple Pencil

For the second-generation Apple Pencil, Apple made it much easier to charge. There's only one way.

All you have to do is place the Apple Pencil on the side of the iPad that has the magnetic strip.

The Apple Pencil's quick-charge technology provides users up to 30 minutes of use after a 15-second charge, but we generally recommend charging your Pencil for at least 5-10 minutes — especially if it's under 20% — to avoid having to constantly recharge.

How to charge the Apple Pencil USB-C

1. Pull open the top your Apple Pencil. This exposes the USB-C port.
2. Insert your USB-C charging cable into the Apple Pencil's USB-C port.
3. Plug the other end of the cable into a power source.

How to unpair your Apple Pencil from your iPad

If you pair your Apple Pencil with a different iPad, it will automatically unpair from the original tablet. That also applies if you pair a different Apple Pencil with your iPad. If you need to manually unpair, the process is still fairly simple.

1. Launch the Settings app from your iPad's Home screen.
2. Tap Bluetooth.
3. Tap the Info button to the right of Apple Pencil under My Devices.
4. Tap on Forget.

If you want to re-pair the first-generation Apple Pencil, plug it back into the Lightning port on your iPad. If you wish to re-pair the second-generation Apple Pencil, you just need to place it back on the magnetic charging strip. To re-pair the Apple Pencil USB-C, plug a USB-C to USB-C cable into both the iPad and the Apple Pencil.

There's no need to work through complicated per-app pairing or initiate specific settings to use the Apple Pencil on any app. Once paired, you're ready to draw, write, sketch, or navigate in any app you want. Just place the Pencil's pen nib to the iPad's screen and you're good to go.

The Apple Pencil doesn't have an eraser

The Apple Pencil doesn't have an eraser nib like Wacom's patented styluses do. All your primary interactions with the iPad's screen come through the Pencil's white nib on the first-generation Apple Pencil, and with the white nib or a double-tap on the flat side of the second-generation Apple Pencil.

Any Apple Pencil still has a few tricks up its sleeves, though. It's completely tilt-sensitive, so you can press harder against the screen to draw a thicker line or you can tilt your Pencil against the screen to virtually "shade" in a sketch or draw calligraphic letters.

Some apps, like Astropad Studio, even offer special combination Pencil-and-touch gestures that have the same uses as function buttons.

How to change functions on the second-generation Apple Pencil

The second-generation Apple Pencil (but not the USB-C model) has the added benefit of one additional function, which is accessed by double-tapping the flat side of the Apple Pencil near the nib. In most circumstances, this will trigger the eraser feature of an app.

This can differ depending on the app, though, as app developers can assign a different action to the double-tap. That could be something like selecting a different artist tool. For the most part though, it's used to trigger the eraser with the only notable difference being with the Notes app.

In the Notes app, you can change the double-tap function to trigger switching between the current and last used tool, showing the color palette, switching between the current tool and the eraser, and turning off the Apple Pencil 2.

Use the Apple Pencil to navigate your iPad

The Apple Pencil supports basic navigational tapping and swiping within iOS, which is perfect for anyone with RSI issues or that just like being able to use a stylus on their tablet in between drawing and writing sessions. Because multitouch gestures and the Pencil are recognized separately by iPadOS, it may not be supported for advanced gesture-based navigation in separate apps. This could include any multi-finger operations.

However, in certain apps (like Astropad Studio mentioned above), you can use your fingers and Apple Pencil simultaneously. Notes also allows this. You can touch two fingers down when drawing in Notes, and then get a ruler you can use to draw straight lines with the Apple Pencil.

As a notorious Apple junkie, you may be surprised to know that I don't own an Apple Pencil. Since I am not a professional illustrator, it never seemed like a necessary tool to my large repertoire of Apple products. Like most Apple gadgets and accessories, it seemed a bit expensive and, in this case, unnecessary. But when I was given the opportunity to try out an alternative to the Apple Pencil in the form of the SwitchEasy EasyPencil, I was pleased to find that the tool can be convenient for anyone, not just artists.

The EasyPencil Pro 3, like most iPad styli (styluses?), can be used to navigate apps and interfaces, scroll, take notes or write messages, and of course, to draw. I personally like to use it to jot out quick notes and messages, and to send doodles to family and friends, but my daughter — the budding artist — has really fallen in love with it for artistic purposes. I'll lay out all the details, but first, the basics:

EasyPencil Pro 3 Stylus: Price and availability

At this moment, the best place to buy the SwitchEasy EasyPencil Pro 3 is on Amazon, where you'll find it for the surprisingly affordable price of $37. Compared to similar products like the Apple Pencil (which retails for $99 at Apple), this is a much more attractive price point. The EasyPencil is also available directly from SwitchEasy, but right now it's more expensive (at $60) on the manufacturer website than it is on Amazon.

EasyPencil Pro 3 Stylus: Easy, indeed

The EasyPencil is an apt name for this product because it is ridiculously easy to use. From the moment you turn it on, it connects automatically and immediately with your iPad. No pairing necessary! I was actually poring over the instructions trying to figure out how to pair it, when my daughter just starting using the pencil on the iPad and it worked! I found this to be surprising and convenient.

Overall, it's very convenient to use. From the moment you turn it on, it works seamlessly with any newer (post 2018) iPad just as your finger would. All iPads now support "Scribble" as well, a feature that converts handwriting into digital text in real time for messages, notes, documents, and emails. I find this useful for jotting down quick notes during meetings. It's also fun to doodle and draw with the EasyPencil, but it was my daughter who really tested out its artistic capabilities.

My daughter is obsessed with drawing, so she was delighted to discover my acquisition of a stylus. She promptly downloaded a compatible drawing app to test it out, and we were both delighted to see the accuracy and responsiveness of the EasyPencil for drawing. It responds to both tilt and pressure, adjusting the lines and marks accordingly. The stylus also supports palm rejection so that the screen ignores your hand accidentally pressing against it while drawing. When used with a paper-feel screen protector, it feels even more natural to draw with the EasyPencil. Needless to say, I have rarely gotten the chance to use the EasyPencil since my daughter got ahold of it.

It bears mentioning that the SwitchEasy EasyPencil Pro 3 supports magnetic attachment. You can attach it magnetically to an iPad Pro or to the magnetic zones of a magnet-compatible iPad case. I don't own an iPad Pro, so I just insert the EasyPencil into the stylus slot of my iPad case and it fits there perfectly as well. Although the EasyPencil does support magnetic attachment, it does not support wireless charging, so you will need to charge it with a USB-C cable. With a one-hour charge, it is good for a full 10 hours of use.

EasyPencil Pro 3 Stylus: Why did it turn off?

Although I admittedly do not own an Apple Pencil to compare this to, I couldn't really find anything I didn't like about this product. It works beautifully, just as described, and we haven't come across any real problems with it. If I had to nitpick, I did notice that the on/off function is super sensitive, so it is easy to accidentally turn it off or on when you happen to touch the cap. I quickly became accustomed to this and avoided touching the cap unintentionally after the first few times I used it, but it's the only downside I could find with the EasyPencil.

The product shares all the features of the Apple Pencil as far as I can tell, with the exception of wireless charging with the iPad Pro. In exchange for the much lower price tag, this doesn't seem like a dealbreaker to me.

EasyPencil Pro 3 Stylus: Competition

The obvious competitor for the EasyPencil Pro 3 is the Apple Pencil. They are very alike in appearance and functionality. In fact, the EasyPencil does everything the first-generation Apple Pencil can do, in addition to the magnetic attachment feature of the Apple Pencil 2. The EasyPencil also works with any iPad, although it won't support the wireless charging feature on the iPad Pro. For me, the EasyPencil is the better deal. It's just so much more affordable than the Apple Pencil, and provides the same general functionality.

EasyPencil Pro 3 Stylus: Should you buy it?

• You're looking for an affordable alternative to Apple Pencil
• You love to draw and write with a stylus on the iPad
• You appreciate simple ease-of-use

• You need wireless stylus charging with the iPad Pro

Especially for budding and beginning artists like my daughter, a good iPad stylus like the SwitchEasy EasyPencil Pro 3 is a game changer. It is responsive, accurate, and smooth when drawing; the EasyPencil even reflects pressure and tilt in real time. It's also great for jotting down notes or using the Scribble handwriting-to-text feature in iOS. In fact, the stylus offers almost all of the same benefits as an Apple Pencil for less than half of the price. When it comes to more bang for your buck, this is the best iPad stylus you'll find.

Fintie Folio Case for iPad: What's good

The first thing I noticed was the beautiful Blossom design. It's based on Vincent Van Gosh's famous painting, Almond Blossom. I appreciate Fintie's use of colors and patterns, so you can get something simple and plain or something more fanciful if you prefer. Also, with most models under $20, the price is quite reasonable.

Unlike some folio cases, the iPad is encased within a plastic shell, covering the back even when the iPad is propped up. The plastic inner case has a slight lip to protect the screen, cutouts for the camera, a Sleep/Wake button, volume buttons, speaker holes, and a charging port. Apple Pencil users will appreciate the slot that allows you to charge, store, and carry your Apple Pencil securely when not in use.

The folio flap does have Sleep/Wake functionality and folds into a stand for your iPad. The stand has three "stops" to hold the iPad sturdily at three different angles. You can also stand it just past the last "stop" for a lower angle, suitable for typing on-screen or drawing. That lowest angle has nothing to brace it, but you'd have to tap pretty hard to make it shake at all. The inside of the folio portion is microfiber with the company logo embossed out of the way behind the iPad. On the outside of the folio is a slide pocket where you could store paper items.

Fintie Folio Case for iPad: What's not good

As with many inexpensive accessories, the finish isn't perfect. There was a loose thread on mine, which isn't a big deal but might bother some people. However, a gentle pull didn't unravel anything, so I'll just trim it.

The case is on the bulkier size. The thickness does serve to offer some decent drop protection, but it's a heavier case than I usually like to use.

The magnets in the front flap are enough to hold some folio cases closed, but not the Fintie Folio Case. Since the front cover is stiff and not the type that folds behind the iPad, it must be secured closed with the elastic band. However, I found I didn't use the elastic band much. Instead, I just sort of held it closed as I moved my iPad from place to place.

Fintie Folio Case for iPad: Competition

While the Fintie Folio Case for iPad lacks that luxurious feeling, the Nomad Rugged Folio has it in spades. Crafted from genuine American Horween leather, Nomad's case looks and feels elegant.

The folio has Sleep/Wake functionality, and it turns into a horizontal stand, featuring four different angles from nearly flat to nearly upright. You can both charge and store your second-generation Apple Pencil in the provided slot. Stash paper items in the outer pocket and secure the folio closed with the elastic band. While it's not as luxurious as some more expensive options, this is a great everyday case for your iPad.

I've been looking for a slim case to protect my tiny powerhouse iPad mini 6 and keep it ultra-light and portable. The Fintie SlimShell Case for iPad mini 6 fits the bill. While it's not as protective as a more rugged case, it barely adds any bulk to the iPad mini.

It's modeled after Apple's Smart Case with the trifold cover and Sleep/Wake functionality. When you close the front flap, the iPad automatically goes to sleep. Open the front cover, and the iPad mini instantly wakes up. Fold the front cover around to make a stand for the iPad mini, either at a high (video viewing) angle or low (typing) angle. It's the a great minimalist option.

Fintie SlimShell Case for iPad mini 6: Price and availability

The case I reviewed is $13 on Amazon and Fintie's website. It's available in two colors: Marble and Lilac Purple. However, there are several variations on this case available on both sites. You can get the version with the thicker TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) back for a bit more protection. It's a dollar or two more and comes in Composition Book or Black.

If you're looking for a built-in Apple Pencil slot, there's a SlimShell for that, too. It retails for $13 and comes in four colors: Sky Blue, Rose Gold, Marble, and Lilac Purple.

The Fintie Slimshell is also available for several different iPad models. Prices are similar, just slightly higher for the larger sizes.

Fintie SlimShell Case for iPad mini 6: What's good

There is very little bulk or weight added to the iPad mini, which is exactly what I wanted when looking for the best case for my iPad mini 6. The case's back is clear, frosted plastic, so you can clearly see the color of your iPad and the Apple logo. The case snaps on and off easily but stays securely in place while being used. There are appropriately-sized cutouts for the camera, speaker holes, volume buttons, Sleep/Wake button, and USB-C charging port. The lip of the case does come slightly higher than the screen for face-down protection.

The front flap of the case is PU (polyurethane - faux) leather with a soft microfiber lining. This front cover has Sleep/Wake functionality, meaning the iPad automatically goes to sleep and wakes up when you close and open in. It does fold neatly into a stand, which you can use at a high angle for watching videos or pairing with a keyboard. Or, you can flip it around and use it at a low angle, which is perfect for typing right on the screen. The Fintie logo is tastefully embossed inside the front flap and nowhere else on the case.

The Fintie SlimShell Case for iPad mini 6 is Apple Pencil charging compatible. Since I'm not an Apple Pencil user, I wasn't interested in a case with a slot for the stylus. This version of the case has no dedicated slot, but it does have a large opening along the right side of the iPad mini, so you can charge your Apple Pencil without removing the case. Note that there will be nothing holding the Apple Pencil in place besides the charger itself, which is plenty if you're not moving the iPad mini around.

There is a bit of overhang, as the front cover is slightly larger than the iPad. While some may view this as an error, I don't. It gives you something to grab onto when opening the front cover. I've tried tri-fold cases without the overhang, and I actually prefer to have it.

Fintie SlimShell Case for iPad mini 6: What's not good

Some may feel this case looks and feels cheap, but that's just it; it is a cheap case. You're not going to get a ton of drop protection from a thin case like this. I don't particularly mind that, but the front cover definitely isn't as sturdy as I'd like. I usually have to try a few times to get my iPad to stand up without falling over. The trifold cover may loosen up over time and work better, but many other trifold cases I've tried just snap securely into place without having to be broken in at all.

Fintie SlimShell Case for iPad mini 6: Competition

I recently reviewed the similarly-priced ESR Ultra Slim Trifold iPad mini 6 Case, which I really liked. The folding front cover does fold into a much more secure iPad stand. It has a large closure flap that holds a charging Apple Pencil in place, but it just kind of gets in the way if you don't use an Apple Pencil.

Of course, both of these cases are modeled after Apple's own Smart Folio. The trifold cover works perfectly and sits rock solid. But Apple's case, if you can call it that, isn't really a case at all. It attaches to your iPad mini magnetically, so there is no protection around the edges at all. The Apple Smart Folio does indeed feel more expensive, but of course, it's also more than quadruple the price.

If you want an inexpensive, minimal case that doesn't add much bulk to your iPad mini, this is the case for you. It's also the case for you if you want a cover with Sleep/Wake functionality that folds into a stand. However, if you like a trifold cover that snaps firmly into place, keep on looking. If you're looking for luxury or heavy-duty protection, this isn't your case.

Despite its flaws, this is going to be my everyday case for a while. I want to protect my iPad mini 6 while keeping it as light and tiny as possible. The Fintie SlimShell Case for iPad mini 6 is so light that it barely adds any weight to the device. Due to its thinness, it's not likely to protect your iPad mini from major drops.

The front trifold cover has Sleep/Wake functionality and folds into a stand (albeit not as securely as I'd like.) Though there is no dedicated Apple Pencil slot in this version, you can still charge your Apple Pencil while the iPad mini is inside this case. It's a cute case for the price, though it doesn't look or feel particularly luxe.

I recently purchased an iPad mini 6 and have been looking for a stand that would work with it as well as my older 11-inch iPad Pro. Enter the Twelve South HoverBar Duo. It's flexible enough to use with any iPad model and many other electronic devices such as your iPhone, Nintendo Switch, Kindle, and anything in between.

It's called "Duo" because it comes with both a weighted base and a shelf clamp. The flexible arm lets you put your iPad in just about any position. A ball-and-socket joint with a knob enables you to turn your iPad horizontally or vertically (or somewhere in-between if that's your thing.)

Twelve South HoverBar Duo: What's good

The Twelve South HoverBar Duo comes with both a weighted base and a shelf clamp, plus the hex wrenches you'll need to swap them out and adjust the angles of the arm. The arm has three joints; the middle and bottom one require a hex wrench to adjust, while the joint attached to the iPad clip is a ball-and-socket joint with a knob you can turn by hand. The iPad clip adjusts to hold any device as small as five inches (like an iPhone or gaming device) or as large as the iPad Pro.

This gives you lots of flexibility, whether you use your iPad (or another device) as a work companion next to your Mac or as a standalone work/leisure device. Use it to keep your iPad in your eye line and out of the way of splashes as you follow an onscreen recipe in the kitchen. Play exercise videos in your home gym; your iPad will be safely out of the way but easily visible. Film whatever creativity you're doing with your hands in your maker studio. Read a book, watch a video, FaceTime your loved ones, whatever you like to do, do it hands-free.

In my testing, my iPad never tipped over. The base is quite heavy and even has a thoughtful slot where you can place your Apple Pencil or other stylus and not have to worry about it rolling away. To prevent sagging, you'll need to be sure and tighten the knob behind the iPad clip well.

I was able to use my iPad mini in this stand, both with and without a case. You should be able to keep your case on as long as it's on the thinner side — no more than 8.68 inches wide and half an inch deep (or thick). The height doesn't matter because the clip only grips the sides. The charging ports, speakers, and buttons aren't obstructed, so your iPad is fully functional while using this stand.

Twelve South HoverBar Duo: What's not good

It is a bit pricey for what it is. If you're not in need of so much flexibility, you might be better off with a cheaper stand.

I'm not crazy about having to hang onto the two hex wrench tools in order to make adjustments. You'll need them in order to swap out the desk base and shelf clamp, as well as to adjust the two lower joints.

When you tap the touch screen, it does vibrate slightly, even with the knob and joints tightened as securely as I could get them. If you do a lot of tapping, you might find this quite annoying.

Twelve South HoverBar Duo: Competition

If flexibility is what you need, this is the stand for you. With both a desk base and a shelf clamp, plus an endless number of angles you can use, this stand holds your iPad or other devices any which way. However, if it's out of your price range, or if a slight vibration upon tapping or having to use hex wrenches will annoy you, this isn't the stand for you.

Since it comes with both a weighted desk base and a shelf clamp, you have lots of placement options.
