Just in case we haven’t banged on about it enough, new OLED iPad Pro models are coming. Rumors suggest a major refresh, with new OLED panels headlining the changes. When launched, the new devices are set to be the best iPad. But things aren’t going as smoothly as any keen would-be-buyers might hope.

As we previously reported, the 11-inch model of the new iPad Proslineup is said to be delayed. This device has been facing production issues, namely due to Samsung Display lagging behind production and LG jumping in. All remains fine with the larger 12.9-inch model that’s expected as well. This comes courtesy of display analyst Ross Young, who put out an exclusive tweet for subscribers.

Now, Young reports that shipping for both models isn't expected until April now. This is due to the production delays with the 11-inch model, and might affect the larger iPad Pro, despite no production issues on that side. Why's that? Because it’s currently unclear if Apple will hold back the larger device so it ships at the same time as the smaller one.

Let’s be clear that this delay is only for shipping. As we reported earlier, we’re still expecting the new iPads to launch at the end of March. They'll debut alongside a new 12.9-inch iPad Air model as well, which is the first larger Air device.

Hard to get your hands on the 11-inch

For anyone desperate to get their hands on one of these new iPad Pros, this shipping delay is going to irk. Given Apple’s launch history, we reckon that they’ll ship the 12.9-inch device when it’s ready, and hold back the 11-inch model until there’s enough supply. The tech giant is no stranger to staggering pre-order dates, so that’s what we expect with the new iPad Pros.

The result? You’re going to have a hard time getting your hands on the 11-inch model. Even after the shipping delay, the new iPad Pro is going to be in short supply. Expect shipping times to fall back even further (weeks, perhaps), just like when the latest iPhone deal gets released.

You've likely heard the drumbeat recently: new iPad Pro models are coming. Apple plans a pretty major refresh, rumors suggest, with big changes such as an OLED display on the way. In a tweet for subscribers, display analyst Ross Young notes that while the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is heading through production as expected, its smaller sibling (the 11-inch model) is lagging behind. Samsung Display, a major display manufacturer for Apple, is already churning out OLED screens for the 11-inch model. But not enough of them, or perhaps not fast enough, apparently.

LG Display is about to join production of these 11-inch displays later this month, taking a stab at the smaller size as well. Since LG is already contributing to the 12.9-inch model's screen production, you'd think they'd have this in the bag, right? However, Young suggests that the 11-inch iPad Pro panel production is somewhat lagging compared to its larger counterpart. It "looks to be behind" and will only start shipping in March versus the 12-inch, which started shipping back in February.

Over the weekend, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, chimed in with his two cents, suggesting that the new iPad Pro line-up is still on schedule to grace us with its presence "around the end of March or in April."

Hard to get hold of?

So, what does this all mean for you, if you're salivating at the thought of getting your hands on the latest iPad? It looks like the launch and pre-orders will go ahead as scheduled in the coming weeks. But if you've set your sights on the more petite 11-inch iPad Pro, you might need to exercise a tad more patience, or perhaps consider cozying up to the larger, more readily available 12.9-inch model. You'll likely see wait times for the 11-inch model go a few weeks out from the expected time frame – just as they do when the newest iPhone deal arrives.

But fear not, once LG Display gets its gears grinding, Apple should be able to patch up these shortages and bolster the availability of the 11-inch model. It might just take a while before you can get hold of the device.

While the 11-inch iPad Pro (2021) has the same dimensions as the 2020 model, there are some very slight differences with the sensors in the front camera. Since the 2020 model uses a 7MP TrueDepth camera while the 2021 uses a 12MP TrueDepth camera and has a 122-degree field of view with extra features like Center Stage, the sensors for the front-facing camera are slightly different. Apple had been expected to bring mini-LED technology to the smaller iPad Pro, possibly as soon as this year. But a new report by analyst Ross Young suggests that isn't the case anymore. And it might never happen.

Young tweeted last week that talk of an 11-inch mini-LED iPad Pro could have been premature, and now that same notion has found its way into a larger display industry report. Young says that it's now thought that Apple will keep its mini-LED technology for larger displays — including a new 27-inch monitor that could also pack support for 120Hz ProMotion.

Apple has previously said that mini-LED technology, dubbed the Liquid Retina XDR Display, is only available on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro because it thought that was how its users would prefer it.

Whether that's actually how things went down or not, we don't know. But it now seems unlikely that we will see a switch to mini-LED soon, if ever, for what is still one of the best iPads you can buy in terms of capability and portability.

You can set up your new iPad Pro in one of three ways, start fresh, restore from another iPad, or import content from a non-Apple tablet. Here's what each of those options means in more detail.

• Set up as new - means starting everything — every setting — from scratch. This is for people who've never used a smartphone or online services before or who want their iPad to feel truly brand new.
• Restore from a previous iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch backup - You can do this online with iCloud or over USB with iTunes. This is for people who've had a previous iOS device and are moving to a new one.
• Import from Android - Apple has an app in Google Play to make switching from Android easier, but online services let you move a lot of data over from any old device. This is for people switching to iPad.

How to begin setting up your new iPad Pro

The moment you turn on your new iPad Pro for the first time, you'll be greeted with "Hello" in a variety of languages. It's the same whether you're starting from scratch, restoring from another iPad, or switching from Android.

1. Touch slide to set up and slide your finger across the screen to get started.
2. Select your language.
3. Select your country or region.
4. Select a wi-fi network. If you are not in a wi-fi network range, you can set this up later. Select Cellular instead.
   • At this point, you can choose to use Automatic Setup to set up your new iPad Pro with the same passcode and settings as another iPad. If you choose to set up your new iPad Pro manually, continue with the following steps.
5. Tap Continue after reading about Apple's Data & Privacy information.
6. Tap Enable Location Services. If you don't want to enable location services at this time, select Skip Location Services. You can enable certain location services manually, like Maps.
7. Set up Face ID. If you need help, here's how to set up Face ID on your new iPad Pro.

8. Create a Passcode. You can set up a standard six-digit passcode, or create a four-digit passcode or custom passcode by tapping Passcode Options.

You'll next be asked if you want to restore from a backup, set up as a new iPad, or move data from Android.

Note: If you want to bypass Face ID and passcode set up, simply select "set up later" and skip the security setup process.

How to restore or transfer your data from another phone

If you're not going to start fresh with a brand new data-clean device, you're going to want to transfer your data from your old iPad to your new one or transfer data from your old Android device to your new iPad. Here's how.

It's time to decide how you want to transfer your old iPad's data (if you're starting from scratch, find out how to set up your iPad as new). You have two choices when restoring your apps and data from another iPad; iCloud or iTunes.

Which one you choose depends on whether you backup your old iPad in iCloud or by plugging it into your computer and backing it up via iTunes.

The key here is to make sure your old iPad has been backed up first. After you've backed up your old iPad, select whether you want to restore your new iPad Pro from iCloud or iTunes, this will allow you to transfer your old data to the new device.

Whether this is your first iPad and you don't want to move over your Android data or your tenth iPad and you just want to start over fresh, you can set up your iPad Pro as new.

1. Tap Set Up as New iPad.
2. Enter your Apple ID and password. If you don't have one, you can create a new one. Tap Don't have an Apple ID? and follow the steps.
3. Read and agree to Apple's terms and conditions.
4. Tap Agree again to confirm.
5. Set up Apple Pay.
6. Set up iCloud Keychain.
7. Set up Siri and "Hey, Siri."
8. Tap Send Diagnostic information to Apple when apps crash or other issues arise or tap Don't Send if you don't want to send.
9. Turn on Display Zoom for extra visual accessibility.
10. Tap Get Started.

A new report from supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo states that Apple's 11-inch iPad Pro will get the mini-LED display from the 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2021) next year.

In a note seen by iMore Kuo states "we predict that new products equipped with mini LED displays in 2022 include 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro, and newly designed MacBook Air."

The news marks the first clear sign that Apple plans to expand its upgraded mini-LED display of the largest iPad Pro to the smaller model in the lineup, bringing with it a much more vibrant screen for better content consumption and creation.

Following the iPad Pro's earlier this year Apple said it made sense to bring XDR technology to the larger iPad Pro because that's where most creators do their work. More likely, Apple may have simply not had the technology ready for the smaller size, or wanted to wait a year.

Again echoing previous reports, Kuo also says a new 2022 MacBook Air will feature a mini-LED and an all-new design. We heard earlier this week Apple is expected to debut a new M2 Apple silicon chip and new MacBook Air in the first half of next year, which could make it one of the best MacBooks ever made.

On Friday, Kuo also reiterated that new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are expected to debut in Q3 of 2021.

Yes, Harber London is fairly pricey, but every item is handmade in Spain with premium materials. So is the Nomad Organiser for iPad Pro 11" worth it? Let's find out.

Harber London Nomad Organiser for iPad Pro 11": Price and availability

The Nomad Organiser for iPad Pro 11" is only available directly from Harber London's website. This version is specifically made for the 11-inch iPad Pro only, and it comes in four colors: Tan, Black, Navy, and Deep Brown, which is the color I chose for this review. It costs $359, but you can customize it with engraving for extra.

If you have one of the older models of iPad Pro that came in the 10.5-inch, 10.2-inch, or 9.7-inch sizes, there is a different organizer available for the same price. There is also another organizer for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and 13-inch MacBook Pro that runs for $431. Both of these, along with other organizers, are available only direct from Harber London.

Harber London Nomad Organiser for iPad Pro 11": An elegant and classy way to carry your iPad Pro

Harber London is a family-run brand based in London, but all of its leather goods are handmade in Spain. This would explain the high prices, but each product definitely feels premium, and that includes the Nomad Organiser for iPad Pro 11".

The Nomad Organiser is made with full-grain vegetable-tanned cowhide leather, which feels soft and luxurious to the touch. Those who love high-quality leather goods are sure to fall in love with this organizer. It also has that genuine leather smell, which I enjoy, though it does fade over time. It comes in four classy colors: tan, black, navy, and deep brown. As you can tell from the photos in this review, I opted for the deep brown. Like other leather goods, this will develop a rich patina over time, so it just gets better the more you use it.

The Harber London Nomad Organiser for iPad Pro 11" has two zippers with leather pull tabs, and it opens up fully like a clamshell. On the inside, you'll find plenty of compartments and pockets for pretty much anything you'd need. The iPad compartment is on the left with the security fastener clasp to ensure that it stays in place no matter what. The interior of the iPad pocket is lined with pure wool felt that, surprisingly, won't scratch up your iPad. Other pockets and compartments can hold your smartphone, passport, pens and pencils, EDC items or papers, an A5 and A6 sized notebook, keys, earbuds or sunglasses, cables and cords, and even cards. There is also an Apple Pencil (or alternative stylus) slot in the middle of the Nomad Organiser.

You won't find any more zippered pockets on the outside, but there is a grab handle on one side, along with two metal D-rings. The back of the Nomad Organiser also has two metal loops. Harber London includes an adjustable carry strap with the Nomad Organiser, which allows you to turn this into a messenger bag or even a backpack if you so choose.

Since the Harber London Nomad Organiser for iPad Pro 11" is fairly slim in size, it works best with the slimmer cases for iPad Pro, like the Smart Folio and similar alternatives like Nomad's Rugged Folio. It can also fit up to Apple's Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro. However, the fit is very, very snug if you are using other bulkier keyboard cases; unfortunately, you're out of luck. Still, if you are serious about being productive with your iPad Pro while using the Nomad Organiser, the fact that it can fit the Magic Keyboard is pretty impressive.

This is my first Harber London product, but I'm most impressed with the quality. The Nomad Organiser for iPad Pro 11" is quickly becoming one of my favorite accessories to use for transporting my iPad Pro around with all of my necessities.

Harber London Nomad Organiser for iPad Pro 11": It can barely fit the iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard

While Harber London claims that this organizer can fit an iPad Pro with a Magic Keyboard, I'm not sure it's the best idea. I tried to fit my 11-inch iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard on in the designated compartment, but it took a lot of effort to get it to fit. In fact, I had to remove everything else I had in there first, and it was still a struggle to get it in. And in order to remove my iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard from it, I had to wiggle it out slowly. Maybe this fit gets better over time, but it is a little too hard to get in, and once it is in, the fit is way more snug than I'd like. It takes some work to remove. I had zero issues with the organizer when using a Slim Folio-style case, though, and I'm sure the Smart Keyboard Folio would fit better.

I also had issues with the three slots for your ID or credit cards. First, it arrived with no space between the stitching, so I had to pull it apart. Second, there is no solid frame behind the card slots, so it's a bit of a hassle for me to get my cards fully in there since it's just the leather. I especially had trouble sliding in thicker cards, like the Apple Card, into the slots, and it felt like any card would snag, preventing them from going in fully. Considering the price tag, I am a bit disappointed with the quality of the card slots. Of course, this could be a fluke with just my unit since each one is made by hand.

I'm also a little sad that I can't use the Nomad Organiser with my favorite keyboard case, the Logitech Folio Touch. I prefer this keyboard case over the Magic Keyboard, but it's too bulky to fit into the Nomad Organiser. I suppose you could go with the bigger organizer for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and MacBook Pro, but that one costs even more.

Another thing I noticed is that the interior lining of the iPad compartment is made of wool felt. While it shouldn't scratch your iPad screen, I would have preferred a plush microfiber lining instead, as many other similar products use. This could just be a personal preference, but I was a bit surprised to see wool felt instead.

Lastly, another issue I have is the price. There is simply no getting around it — the Nomad Organiser is expensive and will cost you a pretty penny. But you should also consider that this is made with some of the highest quality leather and individually handmade.

Harber London Nomad Organiser for iPad Pro 11": Competition

As someone who can be quite disorganized, I appreciate any product that helps me better organize all of my gear while on the go. If price is an issue with the Harber London Nomad Organiser for iPad Pro 11", then you may want to consider the Waterfield Designs Tech Folio. These come in various sizes, though the latest 16-inch version holds the most. While it's designed for the 16-inch MacBook Pro, it can most definitely hold your iPad Pro with a bulkier keyboard case, along with all of the accessories you need and other everyday items. It also has a little more wiggle room for power adapters, portable battery packs, mice, and more. It's also about half the price of the Harber London Nomad Organiser.

Harber London Nomad Organiser for iPad Pro 11": Should you buy it?

• You want something with tons of organization
• You prefer high quality, handmade leather goods
• You have the budget for it

• You're vegan
• You want to continue using a bulkier keyboard case
• You want something more affordable

The Harber London Nomad Organiser is a well-made organizer that can hold your 11-inch iPad Pro and all of your necessities. With so many organizational pockets and compartments, everything will be laid out neatly, making it easy to find whatever you need at a whim, especially since it opens flat like a clamshell. The Organiser is made from some of the finest leather out there, and the appearance will only get better with more use. Plus, while you could carry this around like a sleeve, Harber London includes a strap that allows you to turn it into a shoulder bag or backpack, which I absolutely love.

However, there is no denying it — this is one expensive product. But you do need to consider that this organizer is completely handmade with some of the finest full grain vegetable tanned cowhide leather, which doesn't come cheap anyways. I wish that this organizer had a bit more room to let you continue using other keyboard cases and even comfortably fit the iPad Magic Keyboard in there, and the card slots aren't the best. Still, if you have the budget for a product like this, then it's a great way to keep all of your iPad Pro and everyday essentials neatly organized in one place.

I don't like Apple's Smart Keyboard or Smart Keyboard Folio. I find the key feedback to be a bit...mushy. I think it's a genius design, and for some, it's a wonderful experience, but it's just not for me. I prefer keys that are a bit more clicky, springy, even a little noisy. So when Apple announced the Magic Keyboard with trackpad for iPad Pro in March 2020, I threw my money at my computer screen with a celebrated, "huzzah!"

Because I love the Magic Keyboard for the iMac. It's my favorite keyboard experience, and I've tested out a lot of different keyboards. Combining my love of the best keyboard ever with my love of using a keyboard with a trackpad on my iPad Pro was a no-brainer. Apple Card: charged.

At this point, all the big tech bloggers and vloggers have already told you what's great and what's not-so-great about the Magic Keyboard for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, but what about the smaller one? I don't want my iPad setup to be as big as my laptop setup. If I need a laptop size workspace, I'll use...my laptop. The best iPad for me is smaller, more portable. If, like me, you want to know is whether the smaller 11-inch iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard configuration could be a comfortable laptop-like experience, too, you're in the right place. Let's dig in.

11-inch iPad Pro Magic Keyboard: Price and availability

The iPad Pro Magic Keyboard comes in two sizes: 11-inch and 12.9-inch. The 11-inch size is compatible with the 11-inch iPad Pro as well as the iPad Air 4. The 12.9-inch model is compatible with the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2021) and previous generations of the 12.9-inch, but the older version of the 12.9-inch Magic Keyboard is not compatible with the newest iPad Pro, presumably because of changes in thickness and weight. You can find the previous 12.9-inch iPad Pro Magic Keyboard from retailers like Amazon while supplies last.

While the original iPad Pro Magic Keyboard launched only in the black color, it is now also being sold in a new white color. The 11-inch version is normally $299, but Amazon has it for $199 right now.

11-inch iPad Pro Magic Keyboard: Clickity-clack this keyboard is stacked

As part of my 11-inch iPad Pro Magic Keyboard review, my first question was, is the keyboard all it's cracked up to be? That's the question everyone is asking. Keyboards are definitely a personal experience, especially if you like mechanical keyboards. Some don't really have a strong opinion. They are "keyboard agnostic." Others have very strong opinions about what makes a good keyboard, and the slightest changes to tactility and feedback have a huge effect.

Here's how I'd describe the Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro; It's like the Magic Keyboard for the iMac, but with a cloth under the keys. I don't mean that they are mushy like the Smart Keyboard for iPad. There is plenty of springiness and bounce. But the click is less clicky and more thumpy when you type.

The keys themselves have rounded edges. They aren't sharp like the iMac's Magic Keyboard, but also not as soft as the Smart Keyboard for iPad. The keys have just the slightest bit of a concave curve. It's almost unnoticeable, but you can feel the curve if you run your finger across the keys.

On the iMac/Mac's Magic Keyboard, keys are loose. They sort of wiggle when you move your finger around on the keyboard. They're much tighter on the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro. There isn't as much of a clickety-clackity experience.

How well does this keyboard size work with the 11-inch iPad Pro? Much better than I would have imagined. There is enough room between keys to make for comfortable travel. The keys don't feel cramped into the small space at all. There is plenty of wrist pad room for me to rest my palms next to the trackpad without accidentally clicking it.

The overall setup, however, is a little too small. This has nothing to do with the keyboard itself and more to do with the fact that an 11-inch "laptop" is a little too small to be a daily use, 8-hours per day computer. I can't keep my arms in any sort of ergonomic position. It gets uncomfortable after a couple of hours of straight typing. This is just a general observation on an 11-inch computing setup. It is no reflection on the Magic Keyboard case.

11-inch iPad Pro Magic Keyboard: Magnetic personality is strong

The folio part of the keyboard case, the magnetic backing that the iPad Pro sticks to, is where most of the unique design aspect comes into play. For my 11-inch iPad Pro Magic Keyboard review, I examined just how well it works.

As far as material and general fit and feel, it's very similar to the folio part of the Smart Keyboard Folio. It uses the same silicon exterior material and the same soft microfiber lining. There is a single bendable joint about a quarter of the way up from the bottom. This joint locks into position at a 30-degree angle. It is adjustable up to that degree, but not past it.

Instead of a case that you snap the iPad Pro into, it's designed so you can simply plop the iPad Pro onto the mount magnetically. There are multiple strong magnets on either side of the mount to keep the iPad Pro in place. There is no chance your iPad will slip away from the magnetic connection without a serious jolt.

Where the magnets are positioned on the mount, in conjunction with the iPad Pro's Smart Connector support, means the iPad snaps into place. There's no question whether you've lined up the back camera hole correctly. If you're really sloppy about placement, you might connect it with a crooked angle, but it's also easy to correct that mistake with a simple sliding up or down of the iPad Pro, so it reconnects with the correct magnets. It's a very elegant design.

The magnets are very strong, which means you'll need to use two hands to remove it from the mount. Or really, one finger resting on the keyboard while the other removes the iPad from the mount.

I was actually able to disengage the iPad Pro from the magnets with one hand by grabbing it right next to the angled backside and pulling it forward, but it was a little awkward.

Still, I'd give up one-handed removal from the mount in exchange for a reliable magnetic connection, which I think Apple was betting on when the design team came up with this system.

11-inch iPad Pro Magic Keyboard: Hinge design

In a lot of 11-inch iPad Pro Magic Keyboard reviews, writers talk about the hinge design. The magnetic mount and multiple-angled hinge design give the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro its unique "hovering" aesthetic. It's also how the design team figured out how to account for weight and balance. Since the iPad Pro, which would essentially be the display part of a laptop, is so top-heavy (because it's a whole computing device, not just a display), the anchor hinge at the base and the mount angle hinge had to be adjusted to correct for too much weight on top. That's why the iPad Pro lifts up and moves forward before angling backward.

This hinge design makes this case stand out from every other iPad keyboard in existence. But is it the best possible design?

There are things about it that I love and things about it that I think are * overdesigned*. Let me explain.

It was pretty ingenious to come up with a way to counterbalance the top heaviness of the iPad Pro while still allowing for some angling freedom. Most cases either have an awkward kickstand on the backside, which is pretty uncomfortable on a lap, or only offer two or three stationary angles, with the bottom of the iPad anchored down to the keyboard base magnetically (think, Smart Keyboard design).

The Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro, however, has a maximum angle of 30 degrees, which is adjustable, but all adjustable angles are too inward to be useful to anyone. You can only angle downward from the open-most angle. No one uses an iPad at a 15-degree (toward the keyboard) angle. It's an over-designed idea.

There aren't a lot of options for an iPad keyboard that doesn't end up with an imbalance between the base and the iPad. Brydge, actually, seems to have come the closest with an infinite number of adjustable angles, though if you go past the sweet spot, it'll start to tip over.

I'm not saying the unique angling isn't a good idea. It's certainly one of the best ideas I've seen for a keyboard case. I'm just saying I think it suffers from being overly designed.

Moving away from angling and into hovering, I really like the way the iPad hovers over the keyboard. I don't think Apple could have made the keyboard as roomy if it weren't for the fact that the iPad is up and out of the way.

If you were able to place the iPad directly onto the keyboard base at the exact angle it sits when fully open, you'd cut off the number keys row entirely. This hover design allows for plenty of keyboard space, while also providing enough wrist pad distance for you to comfortably set the palm of your hands if that's how you type.

The only problem with the hover design is that my fingertips will oftentimes inadvertently tap the iPad whenever I'm reaching for a number or the delete key. It stops me in my typing tracks every time I reach for any key in the top row. Angling the screen downward fixes that problem, but the screen is no longer in my ideal position at that point.

11-inch iPad Pro Magic Keyboard: Weight

I've heard a lot of reviewers mention that the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro is a lot heavier than they anticipated. I've been typing on my iPad Pro with the Brydge Pro+ for a few months now and got used to the extra weight that comes along with a keyboard and trackpad combo. To me, the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro is just about right, in terms of weight. Holding just the cases up, I think it weighs about the same, maybe slightly less than the Brydge Pro+, but only slightly.

The Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro actually wins a lot of points for its thinness. It's significantly thinner than most keyboard cases I've used. Not thinner than the Smart Keyboard case, of course, but much thinner than the Brydge Pro+.

This, I really like, because the palms of my hands don't mash into the edge of the keyboard base while I type.

11-inch iPad Pro Magic Keyboard: Stability

I have to be honest, I expected the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro to be more stable when it's on my lap. I wanted it to work miracles. It's just...fine. But still suffers from a bit of wobbling. It still tips back just a little, making me feel compelled to hold down the base with the palms of my hands in order to avoid any potential spillover. It doesn't tip, but it always feels like it could if I'm not careful. If I raise my wrists up from the base in an attempt to practice good typing positioning, I get a lot of bounce.

I also noticed that my lap has to be in a particular position for the setup to feel truly stable. I have to be sitting in a chair low enough for my knees to be at a 90-degree angle, which doesn't happen all that often. Chairs are usually a little too tall for me. When my knees are angled even slightly lower than 90-degrees, the weight balance is off and there is no new angle I can reposition to in order to fix it.

On any flat surface, the stability is irrefutable. It's a solid keyboard system. Nothing bounces. Nothing tips. It feels like a laptop on a table or desk. The base is solid with no bounce at all. The angle of the iPad is pretty much perfect. Not too high. Not to low. If you're sitting in front of a flat surface, this is going to feel amazing.

11-inch iPad Pro Magic Keyboard: Trackpad

The trackpad is where the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro really shines. I've had limited experience with multiple brands of trackpads, but so far, this is the best one I've ever used. Where other trackpads tend to misstep is in scrolling. When trying to scroll down large amounts of text, other trackpads either stutter or go too far to fast. Even with adjustments in settings, I still struggle with this.

The trackpad on the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro is incredibly smooth and intuitive. The cursor moves into position perfectly \and reacts to buttons, text fields, and action bars perfectly. This, in my opinion, is what makes the iPad experience feel more like a laptop experience.

Though I'm happy that Apple chose real clicking buttons for the trackpad, not haptics, I prefer Tap to Click with my trackpad usage, which this trackpad also supports.

11-inch iPad Pro Magic Keyboard: No function keys

I am very aware of why Apple didn't include a row of function keys with the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro. It just wouldn't have fit. The overall experience would have been full-time poorer as opposed to only been poorer once in a while when you want to use function keys.

I really miss having those keys, though. When I want to turn the volume up or down on my music, or want to hop back to the Home page, or increase or decrease my screen brightness, the function keys have always been there for me within a finger's reach.

What I miss the absolute most are the media control keys. I really wish Apple had included volume, playback, fast forward and rewind keys, even if they were buried under another key layer.

11-inch iPad Pro Magic Keyboard: Battery life

I managed to get about nine hours straight of working on my iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard attached with about 25% battery left. That's with standard work-based activities like email triage, two 30-minute meetings in Google Hangouts Meet (a serious battery hog), writing this review and uploading it to our system (along with the photos), planning content for the website, checking in with my coworkers in Slack regularly, and a few other work-type things.

It does suck up a few percentage points of juice over the day, but it's still within Apple's battery performance estimate of 10 hours of usage for the iPad Pro, so the drain is negligible.

When charging via the Magic Keyboard port, I noticed that it doesn't juice up nearly as fast as if I were to charge directly through the iPad (about 1% per minute versus about 3 or 4% per minute), but if I need the iPad's USB-C port free for other peripherals, it's good to know I have a different method to charge.

11-inch iPad Pro Magic Keyboard: Price

When we all found out how much the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro costs, I think we had a collective double-take. At a time when you can get a brand new iPhone for $399, a $299 keyboard case seems a bit tone deaf. It's $120 more than Apple's next most expensive keyboard case, the Smart Folio.

Now, I love the Magic Keyboard. I love that Apple has transformed it for mobile and I can have the same scissor switch, bouncy key, springy feedback keyboard with my iPad Pro. There's no denying it's worth a few extra bucks.

I was disappointed enough, however, in the functionality to consider this not an instabuy (even though I insta-bought it). Apple didn't truly solve the pain points of typing on laps. It's still wobbly. The keyboard still angles upward if your lap isn't in the exact right position, and to add to the frustration, you can't simply angle the iPad further back to accommodate an imbalance. It's an amazing keyboard, but not the be-all-end-all experience I was hoping for.

There are plenty of features that make this keyboard worth considering at this price; the trackpad, the unique look, a charging port, the ultra thin (for a keyboard case) design, the fact that it is distinctly Apple (everyone will know you've got the Magic Keyboard as soon as you open it).

But I still think it's a little overpriced for all its pluses.

11-inch iPad Pro Magic Keyboard: Competition

There are a lot of keyboard cases out there for the 11-inch iPad Pro, but none of them quite have the same design as the iPad Pro Magic Keyboard. However, one of the best competitors that I've tried is the Logitech Folio Touch for 11-inch iPad Pro. This is a full on protective case for your iPad Pro with an attached keyboard and trackpad. While the Magic Keyboard is missing the function key row, the Folio Touch has it with all of the basics, including a dedicated Home button, media playback, brightness control, and more. The trackpad also has incredibly smooth scrolling as well from my experience, and thanks to the folio style, you can have way more flexibility with viewing angles. And even if you don't need the keyboard, you can just fold it back all the way and just use your iPad Pro normally, while keeping it safe and protected from bumps and scuffs.

Another bonus about the Logitech Folio Touch? It's almost half the cost of the iPad Pro Magic Keyboard, with slightly more functionality. What's not to like about that?

11-inch iPad Pro Magic Keyboard: Should you buy it?

• You enjoy Apple's scissor-switch keyboard experience and want it for your iPad
• You want a protective keyboard case that won't add a lot of bulk and has a unique design
• You want a seamless trackpad experience for the iPad

• You want more flexibility when it comes to viewing angles
• You need a function key row with basic features like media playback buttons
• You are on a budget

I love the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro. I love the springy, bouncy tactile feedback I get when typing away. The keys are stable — no wiggling — and have a low enough profile that key travel is comfortable. The keys are spread out enough, even on the 11-inch iPad Pro, that it doesn't feel cramped or compact. The trackpad experience is second-to-none. The ease of which I can toss the iPad Pro onto the case and remove it is simply a joy. When I close it all up, I can take it with me without it taking up extra space thanks to the ultra-thin design.

The way the angled design addresses top-heaviness is especially ingenious but suffers from a little too much designing. It's unnecessarily complex at the expense of limited viewing angles. And in the end, it doesn't really solve the problems of tying on a lap. It still wobbles around and tends to tip backward just a bit if you don't have your knees angled at exactly 90 degrees.

I would like to tell you that it's the best keyboard case ever made for the iPad Pro and you should throw all your other keyboards away, but at this price, I think it's more of an Apple fan's luxury buy than any true reason you shouldn't ever try any other keyboard case.

There are still very few good iPad keyboards with trackpads on the market, and the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro is top-of-the-line. I definitely recommend it, and anyone that uses it is probably going to fall in love with the typing experience. The Magic Keyboard looks and feels like using a laptop, even on the 11-inch model. It's only real flaw is that it doesn't magically make lap typing less annoying.

11-inch iPad Pro Magic Keyboard: 12-month later review

It's been over a year since Apple introduced the first-generation iPad Pro Magic Keyboard. Apple also revealed the second generation of Magic Keyboard at its 'Spring loaded' event, alongside the new iPad Pro (2021). You may be thinking about picking up one of the Magic Keyboards to go with a brand new iPad, especially the insanely powerful 12.9-inch with the Liquid Retina XDR display.

But how has the Magic Keyboard held up over the past year? After all, this is an accessory that costs at least $300 brand new, so it's something that you definitely want to hold up for at least a year or more.

Overall, it has held up quite well, all things considered. Since it is made with a soft-touch silicone material, it can get scuffed up a little easier, but it's easy to wipe it away when necessary. As long as you take care of it and store it properly when not in use, the iPad Pro Magic Keyboard will still look decent, even a year later. Mine has mostly been stowed away in the box since I actually prefer the Logitech Folio Touch as my daily iPad Pro keyboard case, but I did use the Magic Keyboard regularly before getting that one. It has been through multiple bags and carried around by hand, and still looks good. There may be a few visible scuffs and marks here and there, but my iPad Pro itself is still in pristine condition.

As far as typing with the iPad Pro Magic Keyboard a year later, I've grown accustomed to mechanical keyboards since, so even though the Magic Keyboard uses Apple's improved scissor switch mechanism, it's not what I personally prefer to use. However, if you aren't a fan of mechanical keyboards, then yes, Apple's scissor switch still feels excellent for what it's worth.

However, one of my issues with the 11-inch iPad Pro Magic Keyboard specifically is that my fingers often hit the bottom of the iPad when I type out numbers or need to get to the Delete key. This is simply due to my typing style, the more compact size of the 11-inch version, and the fact that the iPad is floating above the keyboard. It also doesn't help that the -, +, return, and right shift keys are smaller than normal, due to the much more compact layout. Not to mention the lack of a function key row with buttons for going to the Home screen, media playback, and more, and I honestly kind of regret my purchase. The Logitech Folio Touch is what I've been using to make up for the shortcomings of the Magic Keyboard, and honestly, I believe it's the better keyboard, especially when you factor in the price.

Still, if you much prefer Apple's Magic Keyboard over others, then the Magic Keyboard is still a great power accessory to turn your iPad Pro into a laptop replacement. Just understand that the 11-inch version may be a little cramped to work with comfortably, so the 12.9-inch version would be best, even though it's more expensive (and you need the larger iPad Pro too). But keep in mind that there are also some great alternatives that can even do more than the Magic Keyboard for a fraction of the cost.

At last week's April Apple event, the company took the wraps off its all-new iPad Pro 2021. As is usually the case with new Apple device launches, the new product goes into the lineup around the same price as the previous-gen version which is then phased out. That means we're starting to see some stellar iPad deals.

Right now at Amazon, for example, you can snap up the current-gen iPad Pro 2020 from just $700 with pretty much every configuration seeing a discount right now. In some cases, the price cut is as steep as $150, though we expect the supply of these iPad Pro models will begin to run dry pretty quickly.

The 2020 iPad Pro landed in spring last year and maintained the industrial design of the 2018 iPad Pro for the most part. It comes in 11-inch and 12.9-inch sizes and features a gorgeous, edge-to-edge Liquid Retina display with 120hz ProMotion, True Tone, and P3 wide color gamut.

Inside, it's powered by the A12Z Bionic chip and the 2020 model was the first to move to a more advanced, multi-lens camera system. It features a 12MP standard wide-angle lens and a 10MP ultra-wide lens as well as a LiDAR scanner which is perfect for AR use cases. It also has a studio-quality mic array.

Of course, the new iPad Pro 2021 is going up for pre-order next week and is launching next month so it's worth weighing up if you want to wait for the new model. Target may have accidentally leaked that Apple is releasing its new 11-inch iPad Pro this spring.

In a post on Reddit, user nanosplitter21 posted a photo of a new iPad case from Speck that he found at a local Target. The information on the case specifies that it was designed for the 2021 11-inch iPad. He also noted that, when he attempted to purchase the case, he was told that it should not have been on the shelf and that it would not be available until April 6.

While the Speck case does not say it is specifically for the expected 11-inch iPad Pro, it is all but certain. Apple just released the new iPad Air in the fall, and the case refers to that device separately, so it is unlikely to be a new generation of that device. A base-model iPad is also unlikely, as reports so far have said that the new iPad will feature a 10.5-inch display. Of course, Speck could just be rounding up, but that seems less likely. Granted, I would jump at a base-model 11-inch iPad that looks like the iPad Air and iPad Pro that came before it.

We're big fans of Nomad around here. So when the company announced its first-ever Horween leather iPad case, I jumped out of my seat. The Rugged Folio has a polycarbonate frame with a flexible rubber bumper to absorb the shock from drops and give your iPad a little extra protection without a lot of extra bulk. The entire thing is wrapped in Horween leather that produces a nice patina over time. I've had plenty of experience with Nomad's Horween leather and I'm not ashamed to admit that I've purposefully held my iPhone way more often than needed just to try to get that worn-in look faster. The front cover of this folio folds into a pyramid similar to Apple's Smart Folio.

It's designed for the latest-genration iPad Pro, so it has the "squarcle" cutout on back, but it fits perfectly with the first-generation iPad Pro, as well. The camera cutout is just bigger.

With so many folios on the market these days, what makes Nomad's Rugged Folio so special? Let's find out.

Nomad Rugged Folio: What I like

The thing I like the most about this rugged folio is the quality tanned leather that's wrapped around it. I love seeing what it looks like after 30, 60, and then 100 days. The leather gets darker and worn-in in some areas. There's usually some kind of pattern that develops, depending on where I hold the case. It's just beautiful.

Less noticeable, but still just as important, is that the magnet system that supports Apple's Sleep/Wake function for the iPad Pro. When you flip the folio over to cover the screen, your iPad Pro automatically goes to sleep. When you unfold the cover, your iPad wakes back up.

Overall, the Rugged Folio has a design aesthetic every Apple fan can appreciate. For one, the tri-fold front cover is very similar to Apple's Smart Folio, so you're in good company. The case that the iPad Pro snaps into is also built to protect, but not hinder your usage. The charging port and camera have cutaways for easy access, and the side that the Apple Pencil attaches to is cut away all the way to the edge, leaving the side buttons open and free. The lining is made from microfiber cloth and has Nomad's name embossed on the inside, hidden from everyone but you.

Nomad Rugged Folio: What I don't like

The case is set up with 52 rare-earth magnets to help keep the cover snapped shut, and in theory, should allow the cover to attach itself to the back when it's folded over. The magnets are laid out with a focus across the left and right side of the cover. It does a great job keeping the cover closed across the iPad's front, but when you fold it into the "kickstand" style triangle on the back side, it attaches to itself but not the back side of the case. If you lift up your iPad, the triangle unfolds, whether you're in typing mode or watching mode.

The only button that's covered by the case's protective rubber bumper is the Sleep/Wake button. The case has a slightly raised bump where the button lives, but it isn't an actual machined button. It's just a tiny raised bump with extra flexibility around the button's shape. So when you press it, it feels ... mushy. I would have preferred a cutaway, or even better; a machined button that presses in and out.

The competition

The most obvious competitor for this particular style of folio is Apple's own Smart Folio, which comes in five different colors, but there is no leather option.

You who want a protective case but not a rugged one

The Nomad Rugged Folio is a rugged case. it has a solid fitted case with rubber edges and extra padding at the corners for added protection. But it's not thick and it doesn't look like a rugged case.

You love leather

If you're the kind of person who walks into the accessory department and takes a deep breath because you love the smell of tanned leather, you're going to appreciate how beautifully this Horween leather patinas over time.

You are a fan of the trifold case design

Though the style of case existed many years ago, Apple made the trifold folio popular with its Smart Folio, and it's been a fan favorite of iPad users ever since. Nomad's design takes its influence from Apple's iconic triple fold folio flap.

You want an Apple brand case

This may look similar to Apple's Smart Folio, but it is not. If you only and always buy Apple branded cases, you'll have to wait for Apple to make a leather version of the Smart Folio.

You are against wearing or using leather

This is not a "pleather" or vegan leather case. It is made from real cowhide. So if you don't go in for leather, for whatever your reason, you should check out Apple's Smart Folio instead. It's made from soft silicon.

You are a frugal shopper

Nomad's Rugged Folio is not an inexpensive investment. It is about $70 more than Apple's silicon version. You're paying a premium price for this premium product. What it ultimately comes down to is style and preference. There are hundreds of trifold style iPad cases on the market. You can even get an elegant silicone version from Apple for less than Nomad's case, but it doesn't come in leather and there isn't anything protecting the edges at all.

This rugged leather folio from Nomad is quality craftsmanship with a beautiful look and solid usability, but you're definitely paying for this premium product. Overall, I definitely recommend it for fans of crafted leather and a trifold folio design.

In late April, it had finally arrived. My brand new Magic Keyboard for my month-old iPad Pro was sitting on my coffee table, ready to come alive. I was so convinced the hardware combination would let me replace my MacBook Pro for everyday tasks that I committed to doing just that for 30 days.

Unfortunately, I failed the test. Or rather, Apple did. Mainly because of software shortcomings, the iPad Pro still hasn't replaced my computer, and here are the many reasons why.

The iPad Pro hasn't always been a "pro" device, regardless of what Apple said about earlier models. The introduction of iPadOS slowly changed this when must-have iPad-only features went online, including the ability to use the tablet with mice and other input devices.

This spring, Apple took things even further into the professional direction by introducing the very expensive Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro. Featuring a built-in trackpad, the keyboard, when snapped into place, gives the iPad Pro an almost iMac-like appearance, especially when viewed from the side.

No doubt, the hardware combination is the reason Apple says of the 2020 iPad Pro, "Your next computer is not a computer."

What works and doesn't work

From a hardware perspective, there's little I would change about the Magic Keyboard and how it connects to the iPad Pro. Sure, an Escape key would be helpful, and the trackpad could be bigger. The keyboard itself, however, is a joy to use thanks to the heavily-praised scissor mechanism also found on the newest MacBooks. I've also come to love the top-heavy design of the iPad Pro/Magic Keyboard combination that works whether you're sitting at a desk or using your tablet from your lap.

As a member of the Future team, I primarily use my computer for writing and editing/adding images to articles. Throughout the workday, you'll also find me on Slack chatting with colleagues, checking out Twitter, and reading the latest news headlines across multiple sites. For video conferencing, we use Google Meet.

Generally, I don't use the computer for processor-heavy tasks such as video-editing or game-playing. When I'm not working, my MacBook Pro is turned off, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max and second-generation 11-inch iPad Pro are my devices of choice for fun and entertainment.

For the "easy" work stuff, the iPad Pro performs just as well as my 2-year-old MacBook Pro. Writing with iA Writer (my favorite text app) on my tablet using the Magic Keyboard is beautiful, for the lack of a better word, and the process of bringing my text to my company's customized web-based CMS is seamless. Editing that content through the CMS is also simple thanks to the trackpad's ease of use.

Slack is also a joy to use on the iPad Pro, as is the everyday web-surfing experience. The Google Meet app performs adequately, although not as well as the web version. However, the login process on the former is much quicker.

Make no mistake; there's nothing I do throughout the day on my computer that can't also be performed on my iPad Pro. However, there are pain points that can't be overlooked. During my month-long test, each of these difficulties slowed down my work process. In some cases, I had to switch back to my computer out of frustration and to keep up with deadlines.

My biggest issue was with editing and importing screenshots and images into our company's CMS. The difficulties here mostly have to do with how iPadOS (and iOS) store photos by default. To create an effective workflow, I had to move images into the Files app (from the Photos app), then give the file(s) a new name to match our requirements. Only then could I drag the images into the CMS.

I also had trouble using Airtable on iPad, which is a software package iMore uses to keep track of assignments. On a computer, Airtable is best accessed through a web browser. On iPad, there's an iPad app that doesn't work nearly as well.

Though multitasking has come a long way on the iPad, it's still not nearly as good as macOS. Specifically, the app tray at the bottom of the iPad Pro shows only recently opened apps, not all opened apps. On a Mac, everything remains in the dock, which keeps the workflow moving in a much more successful way.

Moving forward

Some readers may suggest the difficulties I experienced on iPad Pro are short-term and simply because I'm used to how things work on macOS. In other words, a case of not being able to teach old dogs new tricks. I'd agree with this, at least up to a point. However, there's also a strong case to be made that there's no reason to reinvent to wheel. And on this point, I think Apple "gets it."

Many of the improvements made to iPadOS and iOS in recent years can get tied back to making mobile more like a desktop. Adding trackpad and mice support is just one example of this. I would expect that future versions of iPadOS will look even more like macOS, and no doubt, at some point, a universal OS could be announced. Until then, incremental steps will involve tackling learning curves and patience.

Though my 30-day test is over, I continue to use my iPad Pro for things I once relied on my computer to complete. In cases where the tablet doesn't do a great job, I simply pivot to my laptop, and that's okay.

After the iPad became such a huge hit, lots of companies moved to "improve" on that experience. The only company to make something in this style worth buying today is Microsoft, with its excellent Surface line. But as Apple moves to meet Microsoft in the higher end of the market with an updated premium design, the Surface Go was released to make something portable and affordable for everyone.

Tablets that aren't Laptops that aren't tablets

Both Microsoft and Apple built their respective slabs of metal and glass to be incredibly portable tablets you can connect a keyboard to in order to get something much closer to a traditional laptop experience, though they really don't look that similar to one another. The magnesium alloy body to the Surface Go feels much nicer than its $400 price tag suggests, and tapers inward on the sides to make it a little easier to hold with one hand. It features a unique hinge on the bottom of the casing so the tablet can always stand up on its own, and Microsoft's Surface Keyboard is one of few that sits at an angle to make it much easier to type on. If you pay for a premium version of this keyboard, you'll even get backlighting on your keyboard, which is extremely rare for this form.

Apple's design this year makes the whole rounded rectangle flat on the sides and back, and a noticeably smaller bezel with custom software to ignore your thumb when it rests on the display. This design is a continuation of Apple's move to dramatically reduce bezels across its product lines, but unlike the iPhone, there's still just enough bezel to hide the TrueDepth camera system.

You can use either tablet in portrait mode, but it seems fairly clear by the design of each that most folks are going to use these computers almost entirely in landscape. This trend started when tablets were largely found to be media consumption devices, but with the additional of a keyboard accessory, both the Surface Go and the iPad Pro become capable computers in their own ways. The biggest question, based entirely on the software available and the computing power under the glass, is what kind of computing is best suited to each machine.

Everything about the iPad Pro screams premium experience. The speakers are louder and more crisp than most full laptops with big branded speakers. The ProMotion display offers fantastic colors at a high refresh rate, with the perfect resolution for getting things done in this smaller size. The keyboard is just wide enough for me to comfortably type on all day without issue, and if I'm being perfectly honest I frequently find myself preferring the keyboard on the smart folio attachment to the one on the more recent MacBook models. Switching to a USB-C port opens up a lot of potential features in the future, but the biggest thing you'll find is fast charging through USB Power Delivery and even the ability to charge your phone from the iPad itself.

The Surface Go is great, but it's clear Microsoft cut corners in a couple of places. The front-firing speakers are good, but not great. The face unlock system included in Windows 10 is okay, but nowhere near as sally or reliable as Face ID on the iPad Pro. There's a USB-C port, but few USB-C Power Delivery devices appropriately charge the laptop. Instead, you have to rely on Microsoft's magnetic cable. And as much as I love having a magnetic power adaptor and regularly shake my fist at Apple for ditching its MagSafe tech, the convenience of having everything "just work" with USB-C is the future I want to live in. And yeah, even the cameras on the Surface Go aren't as good as the ones on the iPad Pro.

So why am I comparing a $400 tablet to an $800 tablet? Because the stuff Microsoft gets right with the Surface Go almost makes the iPad Pro not worth it for me in a couple of use cases. For starters, the combination of keyboard and hinge on the Surface Go make it much easier to use no matter where or how I am sitting, while the iPad Pro only really works for me when I'm sitting fully upright. I can expand storage with the MicroSD card slot, and plug in my nice studio headphones with the 3.5mm jack. But the main attraction is the Surface Go Signature Type Cover, a backlit keyboard that sits at a comfortable angle and feels incredible to use in every setting. It also has a nice track pad, which isn't a huge deal when I have a nice touch screen so close but is a welcome feature when I still do most of my day-to-day browsing in an actual browser instead of individual news and information apps. It's also $50 cheaper than the $180 iPad Pro Folio Keyboard, which doesn't offer anywhere near as nice an experience. Not to mention, it's much cheaper than the new Magic Keyboard (which is launching at $299) which will grant the iPad Pro a fully backlit keyboard, floating mount, and a trackpad.

When I plug a USB accessory into my Surface Go, I know exactly what is going to happen and can count on it to work the way I want it to. If I choose to enable full Windows 10 on my Surface Go, I get access to everything. I can have the full windowed computing experience, with all of the triumphs and sacrifices that entails. With my Surface Go, I can play Assassin's Creed Odyssey through Project Stream on Chrome or pair an Xbox One controller and play Portal on my Steam account. I can unzip a file my colleague sent me, or change the names on a batch of photos I've edited for this very article. I can also run too many browser tabs and chug this little machine down to an almost standstill, because that's what Desktop Operating Systems do when unmanaged. This is clearly not the experience for everyone, which is why Microsoft makes it very easy to disable this "Full OS" experience and return to something admittedly closer to a mobile experience.

And it's worth pointing out that while iOS is not really made for that "Full OS" experience, there are use cases where productivity is significantly higher. I may not have full Lightroom or the ability to rename files on my iPad, but Lightroom CC can process batches of photos much faster on here than on my Surface Go. I've seen 3D modeling professionals design ridiculously complex structures in minutes with their fingertips, and the Windows 10 equivalent of this experience just can't offer the same promise. And then there's the Apple Pencil, which is supported by hundreds more apps than the largely equivalent Surface Pen.

Put another way, Apple has made a very superior tablet with an experience you could easily use as a laptop for some things if you buy the keyboard. But if you try to use this as your only computer, you're not going to get too far before you're disappointed. Microsoft has made an excellent small laptop it says is a tablet, but you really have to buy the keyboard to complete the thought because it's not really a great tablet.

Which of these tablets should you buy? It really does depend entirely on you. If you want the best possible creation and consumption tablet, and you've got the cash, the iPad Pro is an exceptional piece of technology and you'll be very happy with it for quite a while. But if you're not fully invested in the Apple ecosystem and you still occasionally need that traditional Desktop OS experience and feature set, you'll find yourself much happier with the flexibility afforded by the Surface Go.

There are a few different ways to purchase your new iPad Pro, how you choose mostly depends on what's more convenient for you.

If you want to avoid slow web pages, you can use your iPhone or current iPad to order via the Apple Store app. This is my preferred method, in large part because the app is quick, easy, requires minimal effort on your part, and best of all — you can use Apple Pay. You can even designate your new iPad for in-store pickup within the app if that's what tickles your fancy.

Apple finally announced new iPad Pros with upgrading specs, new internals, new sensors, and more, and while that's exciting, it's not nearly as exciting to me as the new Magic Keyboard. That's right, I'm more excited about a keyboard than the actual new iPad, and it's all because of that brand new trackpad.

While the iPad Pro still rides the line between a full laptop and a tablet, the launch of iPadOS 13 last year did give the ability for iPads to use a mouse or a trackpad via Bluetooth or a wired connection. It was a welcome change for lots of users who wanted more control over where they were tapping/clicking, not to mention a huge boon for people who needs help with a touchscreen due to mobility issues, but it was a bit of a clunky system.

How to use a mouse or trackpad with your iPhone or iPad

We all know how Bluetooth can be a little unreliable at maintaining a solid connection sometimes, and not to mention Bluetooth mice and trackpads need to be charged (albeit not that often), which can sometimes mean you're stuck without a mouse when you really want one, but no more.

The new Magic Keyboard for the 11-inch iPad Pro and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is finally giving us a much simpler way of utilizing the iPadOS software by giving us a built-in trackpad. No longer will you have to worry about connecting a Bluetooth mouse and then going into the accessibility menu to set up your mouse. You're going to be able to put your iPad Pro in the case and start using the trackpad as you would on your Mac laptop, no fuss at all. It will truly feel like magic, and because it's a bespoke system from Apple, it's going to feel much better than the clunky workaround system we had before. Plus, Apple also has made the new Magic Keyboard compatible with the 2018 models of iPad Pro so you don't need to upgrade to the newest device to take advantage of this new keyboard.

Don't get me wrong, I'm super happy that the ability to use a Bluetooth mouse with your iPad exists and this new Magic Keyboard doesn't change that. If you want or need to use a mouse with your iPad Pro, you still can, but now there's a well-implemented solution directly from the source, and more options are always better.

What you need to know

• A new report has reaffirmed the rumor that LG will supply the refreshed iPad Pro with a time-of-flighg sensor for the new camera.
• This supposed refreshed iPad Pro will be released in March 2020.
• However, other reports say a refreshed iPad Pro will arrive later this year with the improved camera.

A new report from Korean site The Elec (via MacRumors) has reaffirmed its expectation that's been floating about the next iPad Pro. According to the report, LG will supply the time-of-flight sensor that will be included in the 3D sensing rear cameras of the refreshed iPad Pro set to come out in March 2020.

We've heard a similar report before from The Elec back in August, but it seemed unlikely as rumors turned to suggesting a refreshed iPad Pro would come out later this year. The March 2020 release date also doesn't line up with Apple's usual cadence of upgrading its products on one-year cycles.

While the date of the iPad Pro refresh remains unknown, what doesn't is the fact that major camera upgrades are coming for Apple's premiere iPad.

The 3D sensing time-of-flight module, will "recognize the three-dimensional effect, spatial information, and movement of an object by actuating the distance using the time it takes for light emitted from the camera to reflect back."

The Elec goes on to say that it expects LG to supply the time-of-flight sensor for the 2020 iPhones as well.

Apple is expected to hold one last event this fall where it will unveil the long-expected 16-inch MacBook Pro and possibly even the refresh iPad Pro.

If you own an Apple product, you've probably heard of Twelve South's BookBook. Its iconic leather bound book design has been a favorite of tech bloggers for years. The newly designed, Vol. 2, which was previously updated for the MacBook, is now updated for the 2018 model iPad Pro.

Vol. 2 of the BookBook for iPad Pro has been updated with some fantastic new features that fans have been waiting for. The case now has a hard shell interior, which protects the iPad Pro better than ever and leaves the display exposed for your edge-to-edge needs. It also has additional room at the top, convenient for storing your Apple Pencil 2 while charging it on the go.

Twelve South is also finally admitting defeat and including support for taking photos and video with an iPad by including a back cover camera window. As much as we might cringe at watching people take photos with their iPad, people do it and we shouldn't judge them for it.

There is also a secret hidden compartment inside where you can slip your important documents, and even a slim Bluetooth keyboard like Logitech's ultra-slim Keys-To-Go.

Like previous iterations of the BookBook, Vol. 2 supports multiple viewing angles. You can lay it completely flat for reading, prop it up at a slight angle for sketching, or stand it upright for video chats.

Typically, Apple gadgets can't survive more than a few seconds in the wild before someone takes them, cuts them open, and splays their gadget guts wide for the internet to see. But, with all the new devices Apple released last week, it's taken a few days this time, especially for the new iPad Pro (2018) and its companion Apple Pencil (2nd Generation).

Still, iFixit has is now done with the tearing down. It went for the 11-inch model:

• You're probably not planning to shuck your new Apple Pencil, so we de-cased ours in the name of science. We found an entire capacitive grid wrapped around the body. This is likely used to register tap inputs, but this grid ought to help the Pencil know where—not just when—you tap. Could more complex gestures be on the way?
• This iPad's 29.45 Wh battery is a slight downgrade from the 30.8 Wh pack in the 10.5" iPad Pro, and a lot smaller than the most recent Microsoft Surface Pro's 45 Wh battery.
• The iPad Pro 11" earns a 3 out of 10 on our repairability scale—which is still a failing grade, but moves the needle in the right direction.

No huge surprises here, except keeping track of how much of the silicon is slowly moving towards Apple specifications if not complete design.

And the new Apple Pencil:

I had the chance to see an Apple Pencil opened up nice and clean back at the event and it was jam packed. If I recall correctly, it's now as dense if not denser with electronics than the AirPods.

Anyway you slice it, the new iPad Pro models just won't work with any of the old accessories. The new design has made the measurements of the iPad Pro (even the 12.9-inch) different than their older conter parts. The casing size of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is significantly smaller than it's predecessor, measuring 11.04 inches long by 8.46 inches wide, compared to the 12 X 8.68 inches of the previous model. The 11-inch iPad Pro measures 9.74 inches long by 7.02 inches wide, compared to the 10.5-inch iPad Pro, which measures 9.8 X 6.8 inches.

Size is not the only thing that matters here. The Smart Connector that attachs the keyboard to the iPad Pro has change locations. The new models have the Smart Connector on the back of the iPad near the charging port, so even if your old keyboard did fit (which it doesn't), it wouldn't be able to connect properly. Even a stand-alone smart keyboard (that wouldn't necessarily need a specific case size) is probably not going to work with the new iPad Pro because of that Smart Connector relocation.

While your old Smart Keyboard won't work with your new iPad Pro, Apple did make a new version of the accessory called the Smart Keyboard Folio. It's designed to work with the new iPad's, and it's not just a keyboard, but also a slim case that covers the back of your iPad Pro. You can get the Smart Keyboard Folio for the 11-inch or 12.9-inch iPad Pro for $179 or $199 respectively.

Third-party case makers are already on the move. Likely, by the time the holiday shopping season begins, we'll see a handful of Smart Connector supported keyboard cases that are designed for the 2018 iPad Pro from our favorite brands (we're looking at you, Logitech).

In the meantime, Apple's Smart Keyboard Folio is the perfect keyboard companion for the new iPad Pro.

1. Design

Apple's war on bezels continues. After deleting them from iPhone and Apple Watch, Apple has now pushed them all but off the iPad Pro as well. The result is an almost edge-to-curved-edge Liquid Retina display, anti-aliased and masked around the corners just like iPhone XR, but with an extra anti-reflective coating and, off course, 120hz ProMotion refresh rate all its own.

It looks gorgeous. It's not as dense as the XR but you hold it further away, so the experience is roughly the same. And, yeah, it's DCI-P3 completely color managed, and individually color calibrated at the factory, so all those pixels look amazing

The old 10.5 maintains the same casing size and but now has a new 11-inch display to better fill it. The new 12.9 maintains the display size but shaves off all the extra casing making it smaller and more portable. So much so, I think many 10.5 inch fans, including myself, will gravitate to the newly stealthy 12.9.

Both are now squared off in a way that's, probably intentionally, very reminiscent of the original iPad.

And yes, that means the Home button is gone, and the new gesture navigation first seen on iPhone X is in full effect. And it works really well, even if it is a little more complex and overloaded, given the multiple swipes for dock and mission control, and the support for multi-window and drag and drop.

2. Face ID & True Depth

No Home button means no Touch ID. Instead, Apple's once again gone all-in on Face ID.

You set it up in Portrait orientation but then you can use it in portrait or landscape, and Apple has even optimized the hardware and neural networks to function when it's docked to a keyboard as well. You can even double click the space bar to wake it and trigger Face ID so you don't have to reach across and tap-to-wake the screen.

It works off the same True Depth cameras system as modern iPhones, yeah, it can also take all your Portrait Selfies complete with Portrait Lighting and Depth Control.

And, thanks to the silicon, it's fast.

3. A12X Bionic

That silicon is, of course, the A12X Bionic, which really is on Hulk serum. 8-core CPU, 7-core GPU. Apple claims it's faster than 92% of portable PCs and has the graphics punch of an Xbox One S console.

That means it can do everything from running real Photoshop and Autocad to intensive, high frame rate games well.

4. The No. 2 Pencil

There's a new Pencil as well and, while Apple didn't call it the No 2, it could have.

It's got a new, matte finish that grips and just feels better, and you can tap the side to switch modes, like between draw and erase, zoomed in or zoomed out.

One side is even flattened out so you can store it magnetically. The magnets are strong enough to edge you towards the sweet spot and it clicks in with a satisfying, AirPods style thunk.

It also charges inductively right there on the side of the iPad Pro, opposite where the old smart connector was.

The new smart connector, meanwhile, is on the back. And it powers the smart keyboard folio that, unlike the old keyboard, cannot be served at different angles for table and lap use.

5. USB-C

Along with the bezel, and yes, the 3.5 mm headset jack, Apple has also ditched Lightning.

The why is simple. Apple wanted the connector to do more than lightning was designed to. Including driving in up to 5K display, right off the iPad Pro, as well as connecting directly to higher end photography, video, and audio gear.

No external storage though. At least not yet.

But you can get up to 1TB of internal if you really want it.

6. Pricing and availability

iPad Pro starts at $799 for the 11-inch and $999 for the 12.9 inch but goes up quickly as you add that storage and optional LTE networking. No gold option though. No matter how much you pay.

It's inarguably expensive, but that's Apple's current strategy: incredibly premium devices and experiences that they believe deliver significantly higher value for that price.
