It's protective, it's incredibly thin so it feels like you have no case at all, and it works with wireless charging. It's everything you would need in the perfect case.

If you want something simple, but adds some flair to your device, we recommend a GVIEWIN clear design case . The clear ones with a print design are cute and still show off your phone colour. They also perfectly protect your phone, so you won't have to worry about hurting your phone. Also, GVIEWIN cases hold up well over time.

For those who want a nice splash of colour while still showing off the phone, we would recommend checking out the Catalyst Impact case. It's clear, so you're still showing off your iPhone 11 Pro Max, but the pop of colour gives it a fresh look. It's a great choice if you're looking for something that's just a little bold.

As you can imagine, the iPhone's glass back did not hold up well, shattering in this phase of the testing. Conversely, the Galaxy S20 came up basically unmarked.

Next, both phones were dropped onto their corner. The iPhone took a narrow victory here, but both phones performed well.

Finally, the phones were dropped onto their front. Both phone's screens cracked, the iPhone considerably more, however, both continued to function. As a result, PhoneBuff awarded the Galaxy S20 the victory as a result. The prize? They absolutely obliterated it in a further round of bonus testing.

As both phones survived the three initial tests, PhoneBuff went ahead and dropped both of them onto their front from a greater height of 1.5 meters ten times. As you'll see from the video, the Galaxy S20 Ultra did not fair well, and by the end of it was damaged beyond use. Interestingly enough, the iPhone, which underperformed in initial testing, actually did a lot better later on, only the rear camera of the phone stopped working completely.

So why not take a look below and let us know which phone you think is more durable?

It was the same with iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro last September and sure, they make some impressive photos and videos. But it's only when you give a phone to someone who knows what they're doing that you really see that power unleashed.

That's what happened when travel videographer Harshit Vora took an iPhone 11 Pro Max to Egypt, as spotted by Cult of Mac. He filmed his travels using the iPhone – in 4K, no less – and there's no denying that the resulting video is breathtaking. I've never been to Egypt, but this video makes me want to rectify that pretty quickly.

Vora doesn't say what was done to the video once his iPhone had captured it, but it's difficult to believe this is untouched. He does go into his travel itinerary in the YouTube video's description, though. So if you want to check out anything you see in the video you'll know where to go!

The company has a long and storied history of taking iPhones and stuffing them full of gold and jewels, often in the most distasteful ways possible. And it's been at it again, this time making iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro all Christmassy.

There's a lot going into this phone, too. There's yellow and white gold for starters, as well as eight natural diamonds because why not?

As an expression of special respect to this holy day, Caviar creates the only iPhone in the body of 750-content gold in the world. In the center of the composition, there is a shining diamond of 3 carats that symbolizes the Star of Bethlehem guiding the Magi to the birthplace of Jesus Christ. Eight small diamonds echoing the star endings frame it. The lower part of the body is adorned by a gold bas-relief with the scene of Jesus Christ's birth.

Caviar iPhone 11 Pro (Image credit: Caviar)

No matter your religious leanings I'm sure we can all admit that this is one interesting iPhone to look at. The bill of materials (BoM) is always an interesting read and that's certainly the case with iPhone 11 Pro Max. Once the phone was disassembled a $490.50 cost was calculated by Tech Insights.

According to the report the phone in question was a Midnight Green 512GB iPhone 11 Pro Max. And it was picked apart in the name of science. The results? Lots of tiny pieces that all look the same. But it's the costs associated with those pieces that are interesting.

Take the camera and image processing hardware, for instance. Tech Insights calculates that to be the most costly collection of parts at $73.50. Following that we have the display at $66.50 with the impressive A13 Bionic chip coming in at $64. Add everything together, including final assembly and testing, and we get the $490.50 figure.

Considering this configuration is the most costly iPhone Apple sells – at $1,449 assuming no trade-ins – that means that Apple is pulling in around 66% profit for each of these handsets. At least, that's what you might think.

But of course the BoM only tells part of the story. It can't take into account shipping. Or the wages of the people who handle construction. Or the cost of the services that come free with an iPhone like iCloud syncing, AppleCare coverage with free support, and more. And advertising, of course. Those white rooms probably cost a fair bit to keep clean.

For a little context, Samsung's 128GB Galaxy S10+ costs around $420 to make, again according to Tech Insights. That model costs $999 making the profit a reasonable 58%. Note the difference in storage capacity, though.

But of course Samsung's BoM doesn't include the intangibles, either. Which brings us back to my original point: these figures are interesting. But they can't tell the whole story.

Before we continue, let's get the obvious out of the way: this is not indicative of how normal users use their phone. Apple's Craig Federighi has previously stated these test aren't indicative of real-life usage, but it's still worth taking a look at. At the very least to see how smartphones handle battery life stress tests.

The testing began with seeing how the two devices would handle an hour of sending messages back and forth. At the end of the first test, the iPhone 11 Pro Max's battery was at 92% while the Galaxy Note+ was at 87%.

As more tests were conducted, the iPhone continued to separate itself from the Galaxy Note 10+. At one point the lead was 68% to 60% and the standby test true showed where iOS integration shines. The iPhone dropped 6% while the Note 10+ drops 10%, leading to a 12%.

This continued until the Galaxy Note 10 died while the iPhone 11 Pro Max still had 24%. The iPhone 11 Pro Max easily beat out the Galaxy Note 10+.

Again, this isn't indicative of real-life usage, but it's still impressive to see the iPhone 11 Pro Max battery perform so well under a grueling stress test.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max topped the publication's smartphone rankings, with the smaller iPhone 11 Pro earning second place.

Consumer Reports highlighted the iPhone 11 Pro Max's battery life and also praised the device's triple-camera setup.

For one thing, the battery life is much better. The iPhone 11 Pro Max lasted a more than impressive 40.5 hours in our testing. That's the longest stretch of any phone currently listed in our ratings. And it marks a big turnaround for Apple. Just a few years ago, iPhones tended to lag behind the competition in this area.Apple has consistently set high standards for smartphone cameras, and those on the new iPhones have outperformed their predecessors. The company has also added a camera with an ultrawide lens to all three of its new phones, a feature already available on this year's Galaxy phones.

Consumer Reports also said the iPhone 11 Pro models earned the top spots thanks to more durable designs, brighter displays, and improved performance.

Despite Consumer Reports declaring Apple's latest iPhone models as its top picks, it said the devices barely edged out the competition.

"Just six points separate our first- and 10th-ranked phones," the report said. Consumer Reports added that some categories are separated by just fractions of a point.

Be that as it may, the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are the best smartphones you can buy right now, according to Consumer Reports.

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:56.25%';>

                    Get More iPhone
Apple iPhone

○ iPhone 12 and 12 Pro Deals
○ iPhone 12 Pro/Max FAQ
○ iPhone 12/Mini FAQ
○ Best iPhone 12 Pro Cases
○ Best iPhone 12 Cases
○ Best iPhone 12 mini Cases
○ Best iPhone 12 Chargers
○ Best iPhone 12 Pro Screen Protectors
○ Best iPhone 12 Screen Protectors

We've already shared a few speed test videos showing how the latest iPhones compare with other phones with varying results. This time it's iPhone 11 Pro Max against the OnePlus 7T.

The video comes via YouTube channel Gary Explains, which makes it different to most. Instead of having someone open apps in a certain order in an attempt to recreate real-world usage, this video uses a benchmarking tool called Speed Test G. It's designed to combine traditional speed test methods with benchmark scores, although we're still not entirely sure whether that changes things. Regardless, it's an app that was recently ported to iOS which only meant one thing – iPhone speed tests.

And that's what we got with the latest OnePlus Android phone for comparison.

You can watch the video to see how things went down, but ultimately Apple came out on top and by what appears to be some margin. The company has put a ton of work into making the A13 Bionic the best mobile chip on the market and that shows here. But again, whether these numbers really match up with how the two phones compare when being used, we're not really sure.

Apple VP of software engineering Craig Federighi previously railed against such tests, even mocking how manual speed tests are carried out on YouTube during an interview on The Talk Show. We've linked to the correct timestamp below – stick with it, it's worth the wait.

Apple released iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max on September 20th and speed tests aside, people seem to be very happy with them. And that's probably the only thing that matters.

Alongside battery battles, drop tests and camera comparisons comes some of the most fascinating YouTube content out there, teardown videos. For this latest release, JerryRigEverything has taken his screwdriver to the iPhone 11 Pro Max. You can watch as he meticulously dissassembles the phone piece by piece, giving us a first hand glimpse at some of the brand new components that have given us one of the most impressive iPhone upgrades in years.

One of the first suprises is the gooey, string like adhesive that holds the screen in place once the screws have been removed. There's also the substantially larger L-shaped battery which gives the Pro Max vastly increased battery life compared to the previous XS Max. Perhaps most surprisingly of all however, is the fact that after several minutes of tinkering, the reassembled phone powers on and works just as well as it did before the teardown started. You can check out the full video below!

It claimed iPhone 11 would last around an hour longer than iPhone XR, iPhone 11 Pro around four hours longer than iPhone XS, and iPhone 11 Pro Max around five hours longer than iPhone XS Max. Now it seems the new phones are lasting longer than the competition, too.

The test involved launching and running multiple apps including Instagram, the Camera app, and some games to try and replicate a normal day of usage. Whether that's actually a real world test is up for debate, but the results do speak for themselves. Apple's iPhone 11 Pro Max came out on top followed by the Huawei Mate 30 Pro.

That result might surprise some given the batteries in play. Apple gave iPhone 11 Pro Max a 3969 mAH battery while the Huawei Mate 30 Pro packs an impressive 4500 mAh part. The combination of iOS and the optimizations of Apple's A13 chip is likely the reason iPhone 11 Pro Max won out.

We'd suggest checking the video out to get the full picture of how things went down, but if you're looking for the king of battery life, iPhone 11 Pro Max is where it's at.

And he thinks it's all down to how much slower the preview is.

Freeman went about testing his theory by using multiple iPhones to capture a running timer on yet another iPhone. As that timer ran, he noticed that the timer was delayed when seen through the iPhones viewfinder. You'd expect that, but the difference between how far the iPhone XS and iPhone 11 Pro Max delayed things appears to be causing the motion sickness.

I just spent an hour using an iPhone to take videos of iPhones taking video of an iPhone (with a fifth iPhone to take a video of the rest) to verify this: the iPhone 11 Pro Max on iOS 13 has an additional 50-66ms of latency in its camera preview vs. the iPhone XS Max on iOS 12.4. pic.twitter.com/6a1TqVwWxBI just spent an hour using an iPhone to take videos of iPhones taking video of an iPhone (with a fifth iPhone to take a video of the rest) to verify this: the iPhone 11 Pro Max on iOS 13 has an additional 50-66ms of latency in its camera preview vs. the iPhone XS Max on iOS 12.4. pic.twitter.com/6a1TqVwWxB— Jay Freeman (saurik) (@saurik) September 24, 2019September 24, 2019

As Freeman points out, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is anything up to 66ms slower than the iPhone XS which itself delays the feed by around 100ms. As it turns out, that's just enough to bring on motion sickness.

I did this as I was having a subtle-yet-annoying feeling of motion sickness using the iPhone 13 Pro Max camera that I have never experienced with an iPhone before and wanted to be 100% sure I wasn't making it up; a 100ms input latency was already "pushing it": 166ms is "too far".I did this as I was having a subtle-yet-annoying feeling of motion sickness using the iPhone 13 Pro Max camera that I have never experienced with an iPhone before and wanted to be 100% sure I wasn't making it up; a 100ms input latency was already "pushing it": 166ms is "too far".— Jay Freeman (saurik) (@saurik) September 24, 2019September 24, 2019

It's important to note that the iPhone 11 Pro Max was running iOS 13 and the iPhone XS was running iOS 12.4, so it isn't clear whether this is down to the newer hardware of something software-related. Freeman did test multiple cameras, too.

This is the first time we've heard of an iPhone causing motion sickness in this way, but users of DSLR cameras have complained of similar things using electronic viewfinders in the past. The cause is believed to be the delay between what your eyes are seeing and your ears are hearing, but we're not doctors. We've never played one on TV, either.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max, like the iPhone XS Max before it, is the most expensive Apple handset to date. Because of this, we're going with a tried-and-true hue as our favorite model: Space Gray. Yes, the all-new Midnight Green model is breathtakingly beautiful in its own right.
What you need to know

Phonebuff has released a new video drop testing the new iPhone 11 Pro Max

This video pits the new iPhone against the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+

The results vary, depending on the location of impact

There have already been quite a few drop test videos of the iPhone 11 Pro Max by itself, so naturally the next move was to match it up against some competition. Reported by 9to5Mac, that's exactly what Phonebuff has done, pitting the new iPhone against Samsung's equivalent flagship, the Galaxy Note 10+.

The first test drops both phones from a height of around three feet with their backs facing down. The iPhone 11 Pro Max and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ both shatter, but the Galaxy shows less overall damage.

The second test drops both phones to ensure they impact on their sides. In this test, the iPhone performs much better and shows much less overall signs of damage. This can be attributed to the fact that the new iPhone 11 Pro models feature a stainless steel enclosure, while Samsung's Galaxy Note 10+ only has aluminum sides. The benefits of this stronger metal is evident in this test, and reinforces Apple's focus into making this a "Pro" iPhone that can take a beating.

The last test drops both phones on their screens, and here the Galaxy does much better. While both screens do crack, the iPhone's screen is much more useless after the drop.

CNET has also just released their drop test of the new iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. While not a comparison to another brand's model, it does show that the results of these tests can vary widely.

In CNET's tests, they were able to increase the height of drops up to 11 feet before they were successful in breaking anything, but it ended up being the camera, while the glass still remained unshattered.

CNET reached out to Apple about the glass and they released the following statement:

iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro both are made from the toughest glass ever shipped in the smartphone industry on the front and back. iPhone 11 features an aerospace-grade aluminum band and iPhone 11 Pro features a stainless steel structural band. All go through rigorous real-world testing and are designed to be durable, but not indestructible. If anyone is concerned about dropping their iPhone and damaging it, we suggest using one of the many beautiful cases available to protect iPhone.

More drop test videos are sure to keep coming, so expect to keep seeing varying results across different types of drops, what the phones are being dropped on, and what phones the iPhone is being compared to. Regardless, it is clear that every year companies figure out how to make the glass on our phones a little stronger. However, until that magical day comes where the glass is virtually unbreakable, you're always risking a crack or a shattered screen if you go without a case.

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:56.25%';>

                    Get More iPhone
Apple iPhone

○ iPhone 12 and 12 Pro Deals
○ iPhone 12 Pro/Max FAQ
○ iPhone 12/Mini FAQ
○ Best iPhone 12 Pro Cases
○ Best iPhone 12 Cases
○ Best iPhone 12 mini Cases
○ Best iPhone 12 Chargers
○ Best iPhone 12 Pro Screen Protectors
○ Best iPhone 12 Screen Protectors

George Nolfi, (The Adjustment Bureau, Ocean's 12, The Bourne Ultimatum) also got involved, shooting a film about a child doing soccer ball tricks to impress a crowd. When asked about his experience he said:

"It was a lot of fun shooting a project on a phone knowing I had three lenses to choose from...It felt like a hybrid production, possessing the advantages of a phone yet with some of the key creative tools of traditional studio filmmaking."

The footage Johnson shot looks quite impressive. After this story broke, multiple different sources reached out to tell me it's inaccurate or erroneous. There's no bilateral charging in any of the iPhones 11 nor was there intended to be. (Though, I personally have little doubt Apple has considered it - they're smart and rich enough time consider everything. Even if they ultimately decide no or not yet.)

Original story below.

——-

Before the iPhone 11 was unveiled, a report claimed the device would feature bilateral charging. Then, another report said the feature was axed at the last minute. Well, the iPhone 11 was unveiled with no bilateral charging in sight.

iFixit performed its customary teardown of the iPhone 11 Pro Max and uncovered evidence that Apple was indeed planning the feature. iFixit said it discovered two battery connectors inside the new iPhone, suggesting that bilateral charging was supposed to exist.

Here's what iFixit had to say:

With the phone powered on, we disconnected the lower battery connector and the phone stayed on and charged via the Lightning port, but not over wireless charging. Seems this extra connector is a direct line to the wireless charging coil, which could be an important feature for bilateral charging! What's more, when we reconnected the cable, our phone displayed a momentary temperature warning before returning to normal. We suspect it lost contact with an important battery temperature sensor and shut itself down; this sounds a lot like a reverse wireless charging heat management feature to us.

Curiously, following the iPhone 11's introduction, a reliable source said that Apple's new devices do feature bilateral charging, but it's disabled through software. That's why iFixit was able to find evidence of the feature's existence.

Apple didn't mention bilateral charging during the iPhone 11 announcement, and there's no evidence to suggest that it plans to enable the feature down the road. Apparently, Apple ran into charging efficiency issues and abandoned the feature so the iPhone 11 wouldn't be delayed.

It would seem that bilateral charging is there, you just can't use it.

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:56.25%';>

                    Get More iPhone
Apple iPhone

○ iPhone 12 and 12 Pro Deals
○ iPhone 12 Pro/Max FAQ
○ iPhone 12/Mini FAQ
○ Best iPhone 12 Pro Cases
○ Best iPhone 12 Cases
○ Best iPhone 12 mini Cases
○ Best iPhone 12 Chargers
○ Best iPhone 12 Pro Screen Protectors
○ Best iPhone 12 Screen Protectors

Old cases will cover up part of the new camera due to the new square shape, which requires a new cutout. You will need a case that is specifically made for the iPhone 11 Pro Max, such as the Spigen Liquid Crystal iPhone 11 Pro Max case.Go big or go home: Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max (From $1099 at Apple)Crystal clear protection: Spigen Liquid Crystal ($13 at Amazon)

Your old case won't fit because of that cool new camera

The main, primary reason why your old cases won't fit the new iPhone 11 Pro Max is because of the new triple lens camera system. This new camera has three lenses in a triangular formation inside of a square-shaped bump on the back. The dual-lens pill-like shape cutout on previous iPhone XS Max cases will be covering up the new Ultra-Wide camera unless you try something like cutting out a piece of the case to fit the new camera, but that would be ugly.

The new camera system on the iPhone 11 Pro Max is 12MP and has Wide, Telephoto, and Ultra-Wide lenses that all work together for a naturally seamless experience when taking photos and shooting video. With the Ultra-Wide lens, you'll be able to zoom all the way out to capture even more of a scene.

The physical dimensions are slightly different too

Previously, the iPhone XS Max had dimensions of 6.20 by 3.05 by 0.30-inches. The new iPhone 11 Pro Max has slightly different dimensions, clocking in at 6.22 by 3.06 by 0.32-inches, making it just a teensy bit bigger. The iPhone 11 Pro Max also weighs more at 7.97 ounces instead of 7.34 ounces with the XS Max.

So even if you cut out some case to make room for the camera, the iPhone 11 Pro Max still probably won't fit because the dimensions aren't exactly the same. And if you do manage to get your iPhone 11 Pro Max in an iPhone XS case, it may be tighter than you want, and harder to get out.

Do yourself a favor and just get an awesome new case

The iPhone 11 Pro Max is not cheap, so you should protect your investment. And in the process it confirmed a few things we've been hearing in recent days.

The video, posted to YouTube by DChannel, shows the latest, largest iPhone in all its glory. Guts and all.

A recent TENAA filing told us that the iPhone 11 Pro Max would have a 3,969 mAh battery and sure enough we now know that is definitely the case. That's significantly larger than the iPhone XS Max's 3,174 mAh battery which explains the increase of a whole five hours battery life.

Rumors also had the new iPhone using a rectangular logic board rather than the L-shaped one of recent devices. We now know that is absolutely the case, with the new part laid out in the video. We also get a closer look at the new cameras, too.

Unfortunately for us the video is described in Vietnamese, but as the folks at 9to5Mac point out, it's only a matter of time before the iFixit team takes its own iPhone apart as well.

With the company's iPhone Pro lineup for 2019/20, a similar choice is necessary.

Ideally, most users would be content with a 128GB iPhone 11 Pro/Pro Max model. Unfortunately, that's not one Apple offers. Instead, the choice is between storage of 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB.

With iOS software already taking up some space and the new triple-lens camera system and 12MP TrueDepth cameras on the iPhone 11 Pro Max, storage can fill up quickly if you plan on taking lots of photos and videos. Add to this the bulky size of some iOS games, and we can't recommend the 64GB model.

You're spending a lot of money for an iPhone 11 Pro Max. The last thing you want to do is run out of storage and turn the device into a costly paperweight.

The 256GB is a good middle ground

Without a 128GB model, for most, the 256GB size should be the best fit. At this level, you'll have plenty of room for your apps, music, and 4K video.

What about 512GB?

If you think 256GB is not enough, go with the 512GB. This model has the largest capacity offered by Apple on iPhones, and you'll likely never have to worry about reaching full storage again.

If you plan on doing a lot of 4K video recording with those new camera lenses (Wide, Ultra Wide, and Telephoto), then the 512GB capacity is the way to go. The 4K videos take up a lot of space, and with the larger storage size, it should be enough.

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:56.25%';>

                    Our pick
iPhone 11 Pro

Beautiful, large display design

The iPhone 11 Pro Max is the best handset Apple has released to date and the one with the largest display.
What you need to know

Apple iPhone Pro Max. It's a mouthful.

Apple has an unfortunate history of odd names.

Macintosh SE FDHD, anyone?

In the run up to the iPhone 11 announcement we found ourselves speculating as to what they might call the largest high-end model. Some suggested we might see the name iPhone 11 Pro Max, which sounded a bit ridiculous. And then Apple announced iPhone 11 Pro Max on-stage.

We've been wondering whether there's ever been a more ungainly name for a product, particularly from Apple. And as is usually the case with these things, Stephen Hackett has the answer. Unfortunately, Apple seems to have a history for product names that don't quite roll off the tongue.

Enter the Macintosh SE FDHD from 1987. And the Performa 6400/200 VEE from the 1990s. The list goes on. And on. As a side note, who knew Apple made so many different Performas?

In due course it's likely the iPhone 11 Pro Max name will just become normal, and we won't find it such a mouthful. As Stephen points out, time is a great healer of these things.

Of course, over time these things settle down. I remember groaning at "MacBook Pro" in January 2006 when the PowerBook's successor was unveiled, but now we don't think twice about it.

Until then, if you want to learn about computers and accessories you never knew existed and will soon wish you'd never heard of, check out Stephen's post. Just be warned, once you've seen the Workgroup Server 95 you'll never be able to unsee it again.
