Back when Apple announced the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro in September 2023 it also announced that the phones would be getting a new wireless charging capability. In reality, the new charging standard, dubbed Qi, is basically MagSafe by another name. But the key is in the word "standard," because it means that other phones and any accessory maker can create devices that adhere to that standard. And as a result, they don't have to pay Apple a MagSafe licensing fee to slap some magnets in their product or, importantly, offer 15W charging.

That's of course great news for those who pick up Apple's best iPhones, but with times hard for everyone not everyone will rush out to buy a new iPhone every year, especially if they already have a pretty great iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro. For those people, Apple has some excellent news — both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 series' of devices are going to support MagSafe's new friend, Qi2, and they'll do it soon.

In fact, those older iPhones could well support Qi2 as soon as next week. That's because the iOS 17.2 update that will add support for the Qi2 standard is expected to be released next week or, at the very latest, the week after that. So that's great news for everyone and we can all start rushing out to buy our fancy new Qi2 chargers, right? Well, not quite, because actually finding a Qi2-compatible charger is going to be a problem. They just don't seem to exist yet.

No Qi2 for you

While Apple is expected to try and get iOS 17.2 into the hands of the public before the Christmas holidays roll around, things haven't moved so quickly for companies promising to get their Qi2 act together. I've seen companies promise that they have Qi2 updates to their product lineup in the works with some pointing to a 2023 released timeframe. But with the days running away with us, the silence is deafening. Lots of companies were quick to say they intended to take the Qi2 bull by the horns, but where are the chargers?

It isn't as if these accessory makers aren't incentivized to pick up what Qi2 is laying down, either. Apple charges companies to put the canonical MagSafe into their products, something that inevitably makes their wares cost more for customers, too. There's a reason some of Belkin's MagSafe accessories cost hundreds of dollars but you can find similar ones on Amazon with a random band's name on that cost a fraction of that. Why? MagSafe, that's why. And the no-name model only has standard Qi charging so tops out at 7.5W. Which frankly, sucks.

15W charging is coming, probably

The key aspect of Qi2 is that it will bring 15W wireless charging to iPhones as standard, just like MagSafe. But so far Apple hasn't quite confirmed that to be the case. We know that Qi2 will be supported, but Apple hasn't confirmed the charge rate although it seems unlikely it would limit charging to just 7.5W — after all, Apple was one of the companies behind the Qi2 standard in the first place.

Thankfully, there's a hint that 15W is a go. The Verge reports that an Anker spokesperson told them that iPhones that use its new MagGo products will support 15W charging. Assuming those new MagGo products are Qi2-certified, we can assume that all Qi2 products will charge just as quickly, too.

That's once they go on sale, that is. And who knows when that will actually be.

The iPhone 13 may not be the newest iPhone on the block, but it's still one of the best-selling smartphones on the market – only beaten out by the iPhone 14 models. 

The Apple handsets outsell the next best-selling smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Ultra S23, by some margin, according to a Canalys study noted by Patently Apple.

For Apple, which has been struggling a little with the iPhone 14 line, this is likely good news and shows that other companies are struggling to shift units.

Samsung has more models available

Looking at the report, the iPhone holds seven of the top 15 best selling phone positions for the first quarter of 2023. But most importantly, it's got the top four positions too, with the surprising position of the iPhone 13 handset still beating out newer Android rivals. The iPhone seems to be outselling almost everything else out there, and in the case of the iPhone 14 versions, it's not even close.

The big surprise here is that the most expensive iPhone does the best. The $1100 iPhone 14 Pro Max is the best-selling smartphone that costs over $500, beating out the other iPhones as well as Samsung's offering.

Interestingly, Samsung does come out on top in one aspect, and that's in the 'worldwide shipments.' That means they ship more phones than any other company on the list, and Patently Apple says Samsung "does this by selling smartphones at almost every price point in the market, making little profit in the process."

So the iPhone 14 is a success, if you were in any doubt. Apple will now be looking to the iPhone 15 and how that can continue the iPhone's dominant streak. We know a little about the next iPhone already, such as its new curvier chassis, the potential for new 3nm produced chips, and its new periscope camera. Until it arrives, however, none can say if it will be an instant success.

The iPhone 13 is still one of our favorite iPhones, and it stacks up well next to the new iPhone 14. It may not be quite as potent, but put the two handsets side by side and almost everyone would have a tricky time telling them apart. Apple has begun to sell refurbished iPhone 13 models across Europe, but anyone hoping for deep discounts is going to be disappointed.

Apple's refurbished iPhone 13 models all come unlocked and SIM-free, with multiple colors often available. Right now stocks are hit-and-miss which means that you might not be able to pick up your first-choice color and storage configuration.

The iPhone 13 models are already showing up on the U.S. website, but they aren't currently available for purchase.

While the discount might not be a huge one, there are benefits to buying a renewed iPhone from Apple. Each renewed iPhone comes with a full one-year warranty as well as all the same manuals and accessories you'd get if you bought new. You also get an iPhone that has had its battery and outer shell replaced, which means there isn't all that much that isn't new after all.

The iPhone 13 is the newest iPhone available under Apple's refurbished program right now. The iPhone 14, Apple's best iPhone, isn't yet offered but that will surely change in around a year's time.

Depending on which configuration you choose buying a renewed iPhone could well be the better option in some ways, so long as you don't go into the transaction expecting huge savings. Apart from the iPhone coming in a generic white box, most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference at the point of purchase.

Apple has today announced the expansion of its Self Service Repair program to include eight additional European countries. The move means that customers can now take matters into their own hands and repair common issues on a handful of popular devices without ever leaving the comfort of their homes.

The new expansion brings the Self Service Repair program to iPhone and Mac owners in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and the U.K. starting today. Customers will be able to use genuine Apple parts and tools to perform work on their own devices for the first time.

All fixed

The new repair program covers the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 lineups as well as Apple silicon Mac notebooks, including the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

"The Self Service Repair Store provides access to more than 200 individual parts and tools, as well as repair manuals," Apple said via press release. "The program enables customers who are experienced with the complexities of repairing electronic devices the opportunity to complete their own repairs, using the same manuals, parts, and tools as Apple Store locations and Apple Authorized Service Providers."

Those who want to get in on the self-repair action can rent a tool kit from Apple for $49, with shipping included for free and customers able to keep the tools for a week. After that, they'll need to be packed up and shipped back to Apple.

The Self Service Repair program doesn't currently support iPads, Apple Watches, or other Apple devices but that could change in the future.

Anyone who wants to have a go at repairing their own device can check out Apple's repair manuals and order their Apple parts and tools via the Self Service Repair Store now. Alternatively, people can still take their iPhones and Macs into a local Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider instead.

Only Apple's iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max got the A16 Bionic this year, likely because it costs a fortune.

With iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus getting last year's A15 Bionic, a new Nikkei Asia report might have hit on why — the A16 Bionic simply costs too much. In fact, that report claims that an A16 Bionic chip costs Apple $110 to produce.

So many dollars

The same report notes that the $110 asking price for an A16 Bionic makes it more than 2.4x the price of an A15 Bionic chip, potentially explaining Apple's decision to only put it in its highest of high-end iPhones this year.

The reason for the cost? Likely Apple's move to TSMC's 4nm manufacturing process compared to the older 5nm process used to produce the A15 Bionic. Whether that extra cost is worth it is a subject for debate with iPhone 14 Pro benchmarks showing only a marginal performance improvement over last year's iPhone 13 and A15 Bionic chip. However, the new chip is likely drawing less power and generating less heat as a result of that manufacturing change — two things that are always beneficial in a mobile device like an iPhone.

Overall, Nikkei Asia's report has the iPhone 14 series costing around 20% more to produce than the previous costliest iPhone despite prices having not increased in Apple's homeland. International iPhone 14 prices did increase, however, although that was thanks to inflation and the currency conversion situation in specific countries.

All this aside, the latest models are the best iPhones has ever produced, particularly the iPhone 14 Pro models with their new 48-megapixel camera, Dynamic Island, and Always-On Display.

As the end of summer fast approaches, it means one thing: Apple’s fall event is almost here, and that means new iPhones. It’s pretty much my favorite time of the year because I am always eager to see what Apple has in store for the next iPhone that I’ll be purchasing on launch day (or as close as I can get).

I’ve had the iPhone 13 Pro since day one, and it has served me very well over the past year. It’s probably my most used computing device, and it’s even quite special for me as it’s been there every step of the way with the arrival of my daughter last November. But again, Apple isn’t perfect, and there could definitely be improvements made to the iPhone 13 that should arrive with the iPhone 14 lineup.

Here are a few ways Apple could really make the iPhone 14 the best iPhone ever.

iPhone’s Ceramic Shield needs to be better at resisting scratches

Ever since the iPhone 12 series, Apple has touted its Ceramic Shield glass screens, which means tougher glass that should withstand scratches, bumps, and drops better than previous generations. This is also Apple’s version of Gorilla Glass, which is used on a lot of Android devices.

Though Apple claims that Ceramic Shield is better resistant against scratches, I honestly found this to be just not true. I remember when I got my iPhone 12 Pro on the first day, and I was photographing it for iMore by gently placing it face down on a clean placemat; it ended up with several scratches after just a few minutes — I was devastated. I had found no need to use a screen protector for several generations of iPhone, only to discover that the Ceramic Shield on the iPhone 12 Pro did nothing to protect it from simple surface scratches was irritating.

I eventually just got used to the scratches since they weren’t visible when the screen was on, but I could see them when I wasn’t actively using the device. At some point, I put a screen protector on, and it made me feel a little better since it basically hid the scratch — out of sight, out of mind. When I got my iPhone 13 Pro, one of the first things I did was put a screen protector on, because I wasn’t going to let that happen again.

In my use case, I found that Ceramic Shield seemed to be more prone to scratch easily while being more shatter-resistant (though I didn’t personally test this with either iPhone 12 Pro or iPhone 13 Pro, because I’m not made of money). I did accidentally drop my iPhone 13 Pro, using a case of course, on pavement because my husband bumped into my hand with my iPhone in it after going through Disneyland security, but I had a screen protector at the time. So the corner of my protector had shattered but it seemed the actual screen was as pristine as could be when I put on a new protector at home.

I’m honestly not a big fan of Apple’s Ceramic Shield, because again, within minutes of unboxing my iPhone 12 Pro and putting it face down for some photos, it ended up with scratches. I hope that the iPhone 14 display is more scratch-resistant, but after my previous experiences, I think I’m just going to stick with screen protectors from now on. I’m less worried about shattered screens since I always use a case, so scratches on my screen just bother me so much more.

User-controlled screen refresh rate

With the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, Apple introduced ProMotion displays, which allowed up to 120Hz refresh rate for buttery smooth scrolling and improved overall responsiveness. The problem though, is that the average user may not even notice such a feature, at least, not without a side-by-side comparison with an iPhone that doesn’t have ProMotion.

Still, having a higher refresh rate on a screen isn’t exactly new, and Android devices have had it for a while now. With Apple, ProMotion is basically automatically controlled by the phone. It’s dynamic and the phone will adjust the refresh rate based on what you are currently doing. This helps make the battery life last longer.

However, a feature with Android phones is the ability to manually control the refresh rate yourself. If you want your iPhone 14 Pro to always have a 120Hz refresh rate, you should be able to set that. Of course, this does mean a little sacrifice in other things, like battery life, but if that’s what you want, you should be able to have it.

Reports are suggesting that the ProMotion display will remain exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max devices, instead of expanding to the lower-end models as well, meaning it’s going to still be a “pro” feature. Why not make it even more pro by allowing some flexibility and user control while we’re at it?

Faster wireless charging

Apple added wireless charging capabilities with the iPhone 8 and iPhone X in 2017. At the time, wireless charging was already on various Android devices, so once again it was not a new industry standard. But ever since then, Apple has included wireless charging on every iPhone model, including the iPhone 13.

However, despite wireless charging being a thing for the past five years, it’s still capped out to 7.5W for iPhones, for whatever reason. We’re not talking about certified MagSafe chargers, which can charge the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 at speeds of 15W, but just standard wireless charging with Qi-compatible wireless charging pads. From what I can tell, most wireless chargers can fast charge an Android device at a much faster rate than an iPhone, usually at least 10W or more.

I’m not sure why Apple continues to limit the wireless charging speed on iPhone to 7.5W for non-MagSafe charging. It’s painfully slow, though I suppose that doesn’t matter too much if you just put your iPhone on a charging pad overnight and aren’t in a rush to use it. Still, it would be nice if Apple raised the charging speed for normal wireless charging just a little bit so that it isn’t lagging so much behind the competition.

Center Stage support for video calls

Center Stage was a new feature that debuted exclusively on the 2021 iPad Pro, which was the first with the 12MP ultra-wide TrueDepth camera. Since then, Center Stage made its way to the iPad mini 6, 9th-generation iPad, and the iPad Air 5, so it is now a staple feature across the entire lineup. With Center Stage, your face basically stays in the center of the frame when on a video call, and it works automatically in any video call app, not just FaceTime.

But in all honesty, why is Center Stage only on the iPad lineup? I feel like more people probably use the iPhone to make video calls — am I wrong? Even so, it’s still a very capable device to make video calls, and it’s easy to hold up and even move around if you need to. The iPhone also has a wide-angle TrueDepth camera, so it should definitely be able to handle Center Stage without a problem.

Ever since my daughter arrived, I’ve been doing more videos and FaceTime calls than ever before with family and friends. I really would prefer to have Center Stage on the iPhone, as it just seems like a perfect fit.

Reverse wireless charging

It seems like forever ago, but there was a point in time when it was rumored that the iPhone 13 would have reverse wireless charging. For those who don’t know what that is, it’s when you could use your iPhone to power up other small devices, such as AirPods or other smartphones. But this never came to be, unfortunately.

But when Apple introduced the MagSafe Battery Pack, it revealed that reverse wireless charging was in the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 already — kind of. How? When you have the MagSafe Battery Pack attached to the iPhone, if you have your iPhone plugged in, it could supply power to the battery pack to top it off. So in a way, it is kind of like reverse wireless charging, under certain conditions. Maybe Apple could include full reverse wireless charging on the iPhone 14, or maybe the iPhone 15.

It's not a long wait now

We are just weeks away from Apple’s next big fall event, which is definitely going to include a brand new iPhone lineup. As much as I love my iPhone 13 Pro, I am ready for another upgrade, so I’m eager to see what Apple has in store.

These are all things I wish that the iPhone 13 had right now, so I don’t think it’s too much to ask for, really. Some of these may be a pipe dream, but others I don’t think are too far off, such as reverse wireless charging. After all, Apple has shown that the technology is there and entirely possible, it just chose to not include it for the time being.

T-Mobile has today announced a brand new plan for business users that gets you a host of Apple business benefits with your iPhone. 

"T-Mobile launched the first and only wireless plan that includes Apple Business Essentials, AppleCare+ for Business Essentials, a new iPhone 13 for new lines, and more," the company announced on Thursday. 

The new plans are available in the U.S. and should give small businesses "all the tools they need to keep employees connected." T-Mobile is hoping to tap into the 5.4 million new businesses filed in the U.S. last year and help owners "navigating the challenges of running a business for the first time." Together, T-Mobile and Apple are now offering an all-in-one plan that includes 5G, device management, support, cloud storage, and more. 

Let's get down to business

The new Business Unlimited Ultimate+ for iPhone works with the iPhone 13 and Apple's other best iPhones. The plans are only for small businesses to help keep businesses and their employees connected. The plans include Apple Business Essentials with AppleCare+ for Business Essentials, 200GB of hotspot data per month, an iPhone 13 with new plans, and more. 

Apple Business Essentials includes device management, 24/7 support, and iCloud backup and storage in a single subscription. Employees will also get unlimited text, text, and data (plus the aforementioned hotspot allowance.)

Customers can also get unlimited Wi-Fi on select American, Delta, and Alaska Airlines flights, with more including United on the way. 

The unlimited texts and data (only 5GB of high-speed) are available in 210 countries. 

The new Business Unlimited Ultimate+ for iPhone package costs $50 a month per line if you have six or more lines. 

Apple Business Essentials can also be added to existing T-Mobile business plans for $2.99 per month, and all customers can get it free through the end of 2022.

Monocarbon is a relatively new brand to hit the tech industry, so this is my first experience with its products. I started out with the Forged Carbon Fiber MagSafe Case for my iPhone along with a very cool Carbon Fiber Wallet to match, but this company also makes loads of matching accessories for Apple products. I've also got my eye on the Apple Watch band and AirPods case, but that's a purchase for another day.

The Monocarbon Forged Carbon Fiber Case features a slick design with a back panel made of real forged carbon fiber. This material has a unique look and feel that reflects light in a very interesting way, and each sheet of forged carbon fiber is entirely unique. The case frame is constructed of tough TPU that extends around the screen and camera for extra protection. But how does this translate into practical functionality? Let's start with the pros and cons.

Monocarbon Carbon Fiber Case: Price and availability

Monocarbon products are available on the official Monocarbon website and Amazon. Availability on Amazon may vary, however, so the most reliable source is the official website. This forged carbon fiber case goes for $60, which is pretty standard for genuine forged carbon fiber. This high-quality material is not cheap to make, so it's not cheap to buy either. But when Monocarbon products go on sale, you can stay up to date by checking the iMore Deals section.

Monocarbon Carbon Fiber Case: Slick design and matching accessories

Upon unboxing the Monocarbon Forged Carbon Fiber Case, the first thing I noticed was the slick, futuristic look and feel. Forged carbon fiber is different than standard carbon fiber in that it doesn't have a woven look. The fibers are instead distributed randomly over the back panel, creating a much more interesting pattern that is unique to every case. The fibers reflect the light as you move the case, giving it a cool three-dimensional effect. Because of the multifaceted look of the forged carbon fiber, the case has a modern, sophisticated look that's reminiscent of fast cars or even space craft.

In fact, the design of the case is streamlined all-around, with smooth buttons and a slim profile, especially for a case that's pretty dang protective. I've dropped my iPhone 12 Pro Max several times with this case on it (not on purpose, but because this is what I do), and so far the iPhone has not suffered any damage at all. The case does show a bit of wear and tear over time, which is something I'll touch on in the next section.

While there's really no way to completely prevent me from dropping things (I'm a notorious butterfingers), the grippy texture on the sides of the Monocarbon case do help. This, along with the raised edges around the screen and camera, help make the case more protective of the iPhone inside. The flat buttons on the sides do not provide the same clicky feel as some cases do — they do make for a very smooth, slick look overall.

My favorite thing about the Monocarbon brand, however, is the ton of cool matching accessories you can buy to go with the case. AirPods cases, Apple Watch bands, MagSafe wallets, and even MacBook covers come in the same carbon fiber material. If you're the kind of person who loves a cohesive look for all your devices and accessories, then Monocarbon is worth looking into. Right now I have their carbon fiber wallet clip, but I have a feeling the forged carbon fiber look will be coming to more of my accessories one day soon.

Monocarbon Carbon Fiber Case: Why so scratchy?

While I know that the forged fiber carbon material is a strong, sturdy backplate for my iPhone, the glossy resin coating does not seem to be as tough. On one hand, the TPU frame provides good protection for all the fragile bits of the iPhone, but on the other hand, the backplate of the case seems to become scratched easily. I have several scratches showing on the backplate after a couple months of use. Luckily, the multifaceted look of the carbon fiber makes the scratches hard to see, but they are there nonetheless.

I also don't love the largish logo on the back of the case. I enjoy a simple look and feel, and I find the logo a tad bit distracting. It's not ugly in gold print, but I would prefer for it not to be there. I understand that the brand likes to advertise its fine products, but maybe a more subtle or smaller logo would be ideal for a sophisticated design like this case.

Monocarbon Carbon Fiber Case: Competition

While there are several brands that offer traditional carbon fiber iPhone cases, the only other brand I've seen that makes authentic forged carbon fiber is Simply Carbon Fiber. Like Monocarbon, this brand makes carbon fiber accessories for iPhones and AirPods that are high-quality and well-designed. Unlike Monocarbon though, Simply Carbon Fiber does not make accessories for iPad or MacBook. Their products also run a little more expensive than Monocarbon.

Monocarbon Carbon Fiber Case: Should you buy it?

• You love the look of forged carbon fiber.
• You need slim, strong protection for iPhone.

• You'll die at the sight of a scratch on the back panel.

For anyone who has the budget for a $60 case and likes the look of carbon fiber or forged carbon fiber, Monocarbon makes beautiful cases for all types of Apple devices. It's also great for people like me who love a matchy-matchy look for all their accessories. It might not be ideal for someone who is extremely rough on their devices, however, as the back panel can become scratched under rough treatment.

I love how the forged carbon fiber reflects the light, creating a three-dimensional aspect alongside the streamlined design of the case. The tough TPU shell keeps the iPhone safe, and if you like a nice matching accessory, Monocarbon makes one for every device you own. Overall it's a beautiful high-end case that appeals to anyone that enjoys a modern look and feel.

Buying one of the many iPhone 13 cases around is a good way of ensuring that your iPhone 13 is safe and looks great for a long time to come. It might not be the latest handset any more but it's more than capable of a lot, providing it doesn't hit the ground unprotected.

Cinematic Mode, in short, lets you shift focus from one subject to another. This can happen during the video shooting process or even after the fact. It's truly remarkable, and turns your iPhone 13 or iPhone 13 Pro into a fantastic digital camera.

Here's how to use Cinematic Mode on your favorite iPhone.

What is Cinematic Mode?

Apple's Cinematic Mode combines the Dolby Vision HDR format with the technique known as "rack focus." With rack focus, the lens can seamlessly shift from one subject to another because it locks focus on the subject and blurs the background to get a depth-of-field effect. If another subject enters the scene, or you center the camera on that new subject, Cinematic Mode switches the focus point and simultaneously blurs out the background automatically.

An excellent example of how Cinematic Mode works on the iPhone 13 is when you're shooting a video with someone, and another person enters the frame. At this point, the iPhone will use intelligence and automatically adjust the focus point to the new person in the scene and blur everything else. The focus point returns to the original subject if the second focus point turns away from the camera. It's pretty much like a sophisticated and professional filmmaking effect that happens automatically, and you don't need any additional equipment or work to achieve it.

Of course, this is the first iteration of Cinematic Mode, so it's not going to be perfect (but it's pretty good). But another great thing about Cinematic Mode is the fact that you can adjust the Cinematic Mode focus even after you shoot the video.

How to use Cinematic Mode when using the Camera app

Cinematic Mode is accessible in the Camera app on your iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max as another video mode. Here's how to get to it.

1. Launch the Camera app on your iPhone 13.
2. Swipe to change modes until Cinematic Mode is selected.
3. Ensure that the viewfinder is lined up so that your initial subject is in the frame and is also the focal target, then tap the Record button to start shooting.

4. Have another person or object at a different distance enter the scene — at this point, the iPhone 13 should automatically refocus and lock onto the new subject. You can also manually tap on a new focal point.

5. Tap the Record button again to stop the recording once you're done.

As you can see, getting professional-looking videos with Cinematic Mode is super easy. Again, it's not 100% perfect, but at least you can manually adjust the focus point post-shoot.

How to adjust Cinematic Mode video post-shoot

The most remarkable thing about Cinematic Mode is that you can edit the video and manually adjust the focus point. Here's how.

1. Launch the Photos app on your iPhone 13.
2. Find and select your Cinematic Mode video.
3. Tap Edit in the upper right corner.

4. Slide your finger across the clip reel until you get to the part you want to edit.
5. Tap another part of the clip to change the focal pointmanually. There will now be an icon in the upper left corner to indicate Manual Tracking.
6. Underneath the clip reel, a dotted yellow line appears, which indicates how long the manually adjusted focal point will be tracked.
7. Tap on the dotted yellow line to bring up a trash can. This allows you to remove the manually tracked focal point.
8. Tap Done when you're satisfied with the edits.

Time to get creative with Cinematic Mode

As you can see, Cinematic Mode brings an entirely new level of videography to the iPhone. While this doesn't mean everyone will become a professional filmmaker with just an iPhone 13, it adds a new layer of fun to making your home movies.

For a lot of us, the iPhone is our best camera. It's always with us and ready to go when a spontaneous moment happens that we want to capture in a photo or video. While the default setting for the Camera app is good, sometimes you may want to add a little more "oomph" to all of the pictures that you take. For isntances like this, you may want to use the Photographic Styles feature.

Photographic Styles is a more recent feature that is only available on newer iPhones. As of this writing, that means only the iPhone 13 series, as well as the iPhone SE (2022) have Photographic Styles. So if you have an older iPhone, unfortunately, you aren't able to use this feature. But what are Photographic Styles? Essentially, they're like camera filters, except it applies to all of your images from that point forward.

Photographic Styles are basically like iPhone photo filters, but you can adjust the tone and warmth of each style to suit your preferences and tastes. These stylistic effects won't affect the skin tones of people in your photos. There are four preset Photographic Styles: Rich Contrast, Vibrant, Warm, and Cool.

Vibrant will get your image in bright and vivid colors that still look natural and not overdone. Rich Contrast gives you a slightly more dramatic look with darker shadows that will increase color and contrast. Warm adds a golden undertone to the photo, and Cool has slightly more blue undertones.

While each Photographic Style has a default Tone and Warmth setting, you can adjust these as you see fit. Once you make your changes, it stays that way until you make changes again. With Photographic Styles, you can bring out some aspects of a photo as you take them, rather than waiting until the post-processing stage.

Photographic Styles can also be used with the front-facing True Depth camera. However, it's crucial to remember that Photographic Styles cannot be removed from a photo once it's shot, so they are technically destructive. But you also cannot apply a Photographic Style to existing photos.

How to use a Photographic Style in the Camera app on iPhone 13 and iPhone SE (2022)

Here's what you need to do to use Photographic Styles on your iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max, or iPhone SE (2022).

1. Launch the Camera app on your iPhone 13 or iPhone SE (2022).
2. Make sure you are on the regular Photo mode, then swipe up from the bottom of the viewfinder, or tap the arrow button at the top of the screen to bring up additional controls.

3. Tap the Photographic Styles button. It looks like three squares lined up together.
4. Swipe through the four presets: Rich Contrast, Vibrant, Warm, and Cool.
5. To adjust Tone or Warmth, just tap on the one you want to adjust and then slide your finger across the dial until you get your desired tone or warmth setting.

6. Take your photo by tapping the Shutter button.

Now that you've used a Photographic Style, it will remain in effect until you select another one or go back to the Standard style.

How to change the active Photographic Style through the Settings app

Another way to change the default Photographic Style is through the Settings app on your iPhone 13 or iPhone SE (2022).

1. Launch Settings on your iPhone 13 or iPhone SE (2022).
2. Scroll down and tap Camera.
3. Under Photo Capture, tap Photographic Styles.

4. Swipe through the four different styles with your finger, then tap Use Style on the one you want.

Make your photos look their best

As you can see, Photographic Styles is similar to photo filters, but they use Apple's computational photography magic to make your photos turn out looking their best. It's important to note that you cannot remove a Photographic Style once it is applied, and they cannot be added to existing photos in your Photo Library, unfortunately.

Apple has drastically raised the price of the iPhone 13 in Japan as the company seeks to compensate for a struggling yen currency and rising inflation.

According to Reuters, Apple's best iPhone, the iPhone 13 is now priced at 117,800, compared to 98,800 earlier this week.

Checks carried out by iMore confirm that the price has changed in the last two days. The regular iPhone 13 (128GB) model was 98,800 yen on June 29. Today, the iPhone 13's list price is 117,800, an 18% increase.

Similarly, the iPhone 13 mini was 86,800 yen earlier this week and is now 99,800.

The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max now start at 144,800 and 159,800 yen respectively, where previously they were 122,800 and 134,800.

The news is another big blow to consumers already fighting inflation and makes the iPhone 13 a much less desirable purchase ahead of the iPhone 14 launch, purportedly just a few months away. According to Bloomberg, Apple has also raised the price of its iPad and iPad Air by 10,000 yen each.

It is very likely, however, that Apple will maintain these price increases for its new models of iPhone when they are released in September. Apple is expected to ditch the 'mini' iPhone with its next upgrade cycle, instead opting for a new Max version of the regular iPhone. It is also reported that Apple will include big camera upgrades in the form of a 48MP camera, and a new processor for the iPhone 14 'Pro'. The latter will also see a new hole-punch front facing camera replace the notch.

Apple topped the smartphone market once again for the month of April.

According to new data from Counterpoint Research, iPhone models made up half of the top ten smartphones sold in the month, followed by Samsung and Xiaomi. The report noted that Apple's smartphone models in the top ten made up 89% of its sales that month, an insane notion considering Samsung's four models only made up 22% of its sales.

One of the key things revealed in the report was that the number of top sellers that featured 5G almost doubled when compared to April of 2021.

According to the data, the iPhone 13 led Apple's sales with the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max behind it. The iPhone SE did particularly well in Japan and the iPhone 12 rounded out the top sellers for the company.

The iPhone is making a comeback in China as the country begins to ease its COVID-19 restrictions.

According to a new note to investors seen by AppleInsider, JP Morgan analyst Samik Chatterjee noticed that shipments of the iPhone are up over historical averages in the month of May. Chatterjee reported that smartphone shipments overall increased 147% month-over-month in May, a huge improvement over the usual seasonal increase of 22% seen in previous years.

The analyst went on to say that the iPhone increased its market share from 9% in April to 20% in May. International shipments for the new iPhone 13 series have already crossed the 40 million mark, 11% higher than previous models at this stage in the product's lifecycle.

It's crazy to think, but we are already about three months away from Apple revealing the iPhone 14 lineup. The company is likely to hold an event in September where it is expected to announce the new iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods. It wasn't until 2013 that Apple unveiled two new iPhones simultaneously. And it took years before the company sold more than three handsets simultaneously. Today, however, there's an iPhone for every budget. But what about the iPhones Apple no longer offers but are still for sale on websites like Amazon? Surely these iPhones are considerably discounted over many of the current models but does this mean you should still buy them? What is a current iPhone?

Apple has followed a similar pattern in recent years when it comes to which iPhone models it continues to sell. This starts with the latest iPhone and iPhone Pro versions, which are currently the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max. From there, you can throw in the latest iPhone SE, followed by the two more recent generations: the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, and iPhone 11.

This means, at least until September, when new handsets are announced, Apple's selling eight iPhone models, ranging from the 2019 iPhone 11 to the 2021 iPhone 13 series.

What about software support?

Buying a new iPhone means very little if the latest software that runs on it, iOS, can't be installed. The oldest iPhones to support iOS 15 are the 2015 iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. This will change, however, with the arrival of iOS 16 later this year. The upcoming update, currently in beta, drops support for the iPhone 6s series, iPhone 7 series, and first-generation iPhone SE. When the switch is made, the oldest supported iPhones will become the 2017 iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus. Based on current practice, those are the three iPhones that will lose upgrade support in 2023 with the arrival of iOS 17.

What about hardware support?

Eventually, Apple products become "obsolete" or "vintage." The differences between the two are minimal but important.

Vintage products are no longer distributed by the mother ship and are between five and seven years of age. In some cases, but not all cases, iPhones in this group are serviceable and replacement parts are available. By contrast, obsolete models are those devices Apple has stopped distributing for sale and are no longer available for service or parts.

Additionally, I would suggest not buying three other iPhones, including the iPhone XS series, iPhone XR, and iPhone SE (2nd generation). The first two because they are nearly four years old, and the last one because the newer iPhone SE (3rd generation) can be purchased for just a little bit more.

"Old" iPhones that are okay to buy

If you're looking to purchase an older, unused (or renewed) phone that Apple no longer offers, you should consider the last few Pro lineups. For those who might not know, Apple has made it a habit of retiring iPhone Pro models one year after their release, going back to the iPhone 11 Pro in 2019. Remember, these were the best iPhones you could buy when they were first announced. Therefore, the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 12 are highly recommended if you can find new ones on sale.

All iPhones you should buy

Unlike other slip-on vent clips, this one will not fall out, even if it's jostled or bumped. This was the biggest difference I noticed between this and other vent clips I've used. Once installed, the Mous mount isn't going anywhere but on a ride with you.

The mount is built with a ball-mount swivel base so that it can be turned and twisted in almost any direction. The only other thing I'd like to see on a product like this is cord storage. I wish there was a way to neatly tuck away the cord when it's not needed. Although there is a lip behind the mount where you could wrap the cord, it won't stay put. A convenient clip or strap for the cord would be a nice touch.

The Mous MagSafe Charging Mount is unique in its smart no-slip design and strong magnetic hold, but there are other products that serve the same basic purpose of docking and charging the iPhone. One such product is the mophie Snap+ Wireless Vent Mount Charger. This one is MagSafe compatible and provides a 15W charge as it holds the iPhone. The main difference here is that the mophie provides a standard vent clip connector so it's not going to have the same solid hold as the Mous. The mophie is much more affordable, however, so making a decision between these two products will likely come down to budget.

Samsung's Galaxy S22 range of devices depreciates almost three times more than the iPhone 13 lineup, according to a new study.

Used device seller SellCell has shared a new report on how quickly devices like Samsung and Apple's flagships lose their value after being unboxed. It's expected that hardware falls in value once it's been used, but the numbers relating to Samsung's Galaxy S22 devices is worrying in the extreme — a top-of-the-line 1TB Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G loses a massive 52% in just a month, despite being in 'like new' condition. Buyers of the 128GB version have things even worse because their device is worth 57.5% less than when it was new.

For comparison, Apple's 1TB iPhone 13 Pro Max falls just 23% in the same timeframe and condition.

Apple is now building iPhone 13 handsets in India, the company has confirmed. The news comes as the company continues its work to reduce its reliance on the Chinese supply chain following two years of COVID-19 pandemic-related supply issues.

The new production is confirmed by a Reuters report that notes the devices are being built out of a Foxconn plant in the town of Sriperumbudur in Southern Tamil Nadu state.

This isn't the first time that an iPhone has been assembled in India, of course. Previous iPhone SE and iPhone 12 models have previously been built there, although this is the first time that the latest iPhone 13 devices have been added to the mix. Reuters reports that Apple is also planning to begin iPad assembly in the country, too.

It isn't just Apple and India, either. Many companies continue to move production worldwide to deal with an over-reliance on Chinese production.

Apple unveiled two new distinct shades of green for its best iPhone at its March event on Tuesday, for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. The latter is called Alpine green and appears to be a few shades lighter than the iPhone 13 green.

The new green colors have proven popular so far, but mid-cycle releases beg the question why can't we just have all the iPhone colors on launch?

During Apple's 'Peek Performance' March 8 event, the company dropped a slew of new and updated products, from the iPhone SE 3 to an all-new Mac Studio, and quite a few things in between. What they started with, of course, is a brand new color for both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro: Green and Alpine Green, respectively.

When I saw this, I was internally screaming as I continued to watch the event. Once again, Apple drops the best colors mid-cycle, pushing aside the early adopters and launch day buyers of the best iPhone, which is arguably its most popular product.

It feels like punishment for early adopters

Since the iPhone 3G, I have bought a new iPhone on launch day. For years, the colors that Apple dropped on the first day remained the colors you could purchase for the next year. There were no surprise color drops in the middle of the year.

It wasn't until the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus that Apple began to introduce a new color halfway through the product cycle, and it started with PRODUCT(RED). Apple did the same thing with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, again with PRODUCT(RED) versions dropping in the spring, months after launch. It wasn't until the iPhone 12 that Apple did this again, with a purple color, and now it has happened again with the green iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro.

As you can see, Apple has been pretty inconsistent when coming out with a new color mid-cycle. It went years without doing so between the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 12, showing that it's not completely necessary to boost mid-cycle sales. And if it wants to boost iPhone sales between flagship launches, well, it just announced an updated iPhone SE 3 for those who want an affordable iPhone, still prefer a Home button for Touch ID, or want to upgrade from the previous SE.

I'm just a little peeved that Apple keeps doing this, and with gorgeous colors that I would personally love to have, when there really isn't a need to do so. As a loyal consumer and early adopter, it feels like I continue to get punished for always buying a launch day iPhone. Yes, I understand that I'm not the "normal" average iPhone consumer. Still, the reason I need a new flagship iPhone each year is because of my line of work — how else can I write up guides on new iPhone features here at iMore without having the latest iPhone?

Seriously, Apple. Just drop all colors on launch, please.

At least the iPhone 13 Pro got a little more color to it

When I had the iPhone 11 Pro, I honestly was a big fan of the Midnight Green color. While it's pretty obvious (if you see the things that I own and wear) that my first favorite color is pink, green is another favorite. I loved the Midnight Green, and while I was sad it didn't return for the iPhone 12 Pro, I enjoyed Pacific Blue, which I dub "best blue." And even though I liked the green and blue options for these devices, I usually opt for the new color anyways just because it's the "new" color and an indicator that I have the latest iPhone.

Now, let's talk about that Sierra Blue for the iPhone 13 Pro. It's an icy blue, and while it looks good in specific lighting and angles, it's far inferior compared to Pacific Blue. It's just way paler and not as vibrant as Pacific Blue. Even though I wasn't sure about Sierra Blue, the other color options didn't appeal to me, and Sierra Blue was going to be the indicator that I had the latest iPhone.

But now Apple drops the lush Alpine Green color for the iPhone 13 Pro, which honestly looks very similar to Midnight Green (just Midnight Green 2.0 to me). To be honest, this new Alpine Green is the best-looking color for the iPhone 13 Pro, and I really wish I could have had this on launch day.

I mean, I guess it's a step in the right direction after we've been crying out for pro devices to have more color, right? Let's just get these great new colors on launch day, Apple.

Color just gets covered up by a case anyway

When I saw the green iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, I honestly considered selling my current 1TB Sierra Blue iPhone 13 Pro to get the Alpine Green. But at the end of the day, you know what? That's just silly and not worth it if I'm going to be getting an iPhone 14 Pro in a few months. Plus, as someone who tends to drop their phone a lot, that Alpine Green would just get covered up with one of the best iPhone 13 Pro cases anyway.
