If you were wondering when a new iPhone SE model may drop, Apple may have just given its biggest hint yet that it could be soon.

Michael Tigas, the developer of Focused Work and Dumb Phone, spotted that developers no longer need to upload screenshots of their apps running on an iPhone SE. When submitting an app to Apple's App Store, developers have to follow specific guidelines in order for Apple to approve their app. The company has a page all about this process, but it's the change in requirements at the 'Product Page' stage that Tigas noticed.

This could suggest that Apple's budget iPhone SE handset could be refreshed soon. Rumors point to an iPhone SE 4 that may finally get rid of the Home Button in favor of a 6.1-inch LTPS OLED 60Hz display, similar to the iPhone 14. As the upcoming iPhone 16, out on September 20, also features a 6.1-inch screen, this would make it easier for developers to submit screenshots to Apple, as they would be showcasing their app on two iPhone models.

What else is rumored for iPhone SE 4?

If you're holding out for an iPhone SE 4, there are plenty more features rumored to be in store. A USB-C port will allegedly replace the Lightning port, and the cheaper iPhone will finally get 5G, something the best iPhones have had since 2020.

On the camera front, a report from 2023 suggests the iPhone SE 4 will still have one lens, featuring an IMX503 sensor, a 1/2.55 sensor size, and f/1.8 aperture. It's also rumored to support Cinematic Mode and Portrait Mode, allowing for photos and videos to have the smooth 'bokeh' effect.

Finally, the same report hints that the Action button, featured on iPhone 15 Pro and all iPhone 16 models, will be coming to the iPhone SE 4. However, there's no word if it will also include the Camera Control button as well.

While we still don't know when this upcoming iPhone SE handset will arrive, this update could be its biggest yet if many of these rumors come true.

Apple's upcoming iPhone SE 4 might be the most interesting iPhone coming out in the next year. A new report provides details on what to expect with the display and, if true, I'm seriously considering dropping my Pro iPhone for the cheapest model.

As reported by Nikkei Asia, Apple plans to drop the LCD display for the 4th generation iPhone SE. Instead of LCD, the next-generation iPhone SE will get a huge upgrade and enjoy the same OLED technology that has powered the company's flagship iPhone models for the last few years.

According to the report, "Apple has begun placing orders for OLED displays for the upcoming iPhone SE from China's BOE Technology Group and South Korea's LG Display. This change marks the end of LCDs in iPhones, with the SE model scheduled for release in next year also featuring an OLED display, along with standard-priced iPhone models and premium Pro models."

If true, this will mean that the next iPhone SE, which is expected to be released in 2025, will mark the end of LCD displays on the iPhone. The regular iPhone and Pro models have sported OLED displays for years, leaving the iPhone SE as the only iPhone model to stick with the inferior LCD technology.

If the company does make the switch, it will effectively end the company's iPhone production relationship with Japan Display (JDI) and Sharp, two companies that have been part of the iPhone supply chain and supplied the LCD displays for the company.

This sounds more interesting than the iPhone 16

Call me crazy, but the next iPhone SE is sounding more and more like the most interesting iPhone to be coming out over the next couple of years. While we'll certainly see upgrades to the regular and Pro model iPhones, we can likely expect all of those to be relatively incremental.

In comparison, the iPhone SE is ready to jump to the company's more modern industrial design, get an OLED display, pack in new cameras, finally upgrade to Face ID over Touch ID, and join us in 2024 with a USB-C port. That gets the average buyer a heck of a lot of the features that we currently enjoy in the flagship iPhone models.

Things get really interesting, however, when you compare the price. While the flagship iPhone models start at $799, the next iPhone SE is expected to come in at around $500 — almost half of the cost. For a lot of people who don't need the latest and greatest, the iPhone SE might start to make a heck of a lot of sense and even eat into sales of the company's non-Plus sized regular iPhone.

If I didn't need safety features like Emergency SOS via Satellite while I am backpacking in the backcountry, I would really consider stepping down from my iPhone 15 Pro to the iPhone SE. I rocked the iPhone mini until Apple discontinued it and was just fine with a non-Pro iPhone feature set and a non-Pro iPhone cost.

For people who will be just fine without those additional features, the iPhone SE is about to become the most enticing option than it ever has been. This thing is no longer an afterthought.

If you're looking to get a new iPhone and spend as little as possible, the iPhone SE models have long been the place to be. But as the old iPhone 8-like design has started to get longer and longer in the tooth, it's become harder to recommend. That's all expected to change when the iPhone SE 4 arrives next year with an iPhone 14-like design, Face ID, USB-C and OLED display.

But that might not be the biggest reason to buy the device. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his latest newsletter, the iPhone SE 4 will most likely arrive with Apple Intelligence features. He writes: "you can bet that it will have Apple Intelligence."

Why is Apple Intelligence on the iPhone SE 4 a big deal?

Apple Intelligence features on the iPhone SE 4 would be a big deal. Currently, you need at least 8GB of RAM to even think about running these new features. This means, as of now, only the iPhone 15 Pro models are in the club, until the iPhone 16 releases in September. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus (alongside all older models), with their measly 6GB RAM, are left on the outside looking in. It also gives us another clue to the iPhone SE 4, suggesting the device will get 8GB of RAM.

The timing of this new iPhone SE is quite curious. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, it’s likely to hit the shelves in early 2025, shortly after the iPhone 16 lineup makes its debut in September. A sub-$500 device with the latest AI features that even the recent iPhone 15 models can’t handle would be quite a pull for the new budget iPhone.

As for when you can expect it, Apple’s suppliers are reportedly gearing up to increase production in October, aiming for a release just in time for the Lunar New Year in January 2025. But don't get your hopes up just yet. Historically, Apple has a thing for March releases when it comes to the SE lineup. So, a March 2025 release seems more likely.

We've known for a while that the next iPhone SE model is likely to have a drastically updated design, but a new report has suggested the new "cheaper iPhone", which could arrive as early as the start of next year, could be pretty capable, too.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has said the new device, the first in the SE line since 2022, will look a lot more like an iPhone 14, meaning it'll finally ditch the home button, and it'll have a "crisper OLED display".

Perhaps most interestingly, Gurman is bullish that the new device will have Apple Intelligence features. Considering the current iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus don't have access to Apple's AI features, that suggests a sizeable internal upgrade, too.

A matter of price

While Gurman also discussed how the iPhone 17 could debut a new mid-tier 'Air' model that falls between the base iPhone and the Pro models, he also suggested that if Apple can get the next iPhone SE down to around $500 "it could be a hot seller" - and it's hard to disagree.

Giving users that all-display front design, access to Apple Intelligence, and Apple services like the App Store, iMessage, and more, would certainly make a more powerful, more modern iPhone SE an ideal purchase for many - and maybe for enterprise, too.

It remains to be seen how the company would price something like that, but what Gurman has detailed certainly sounds like a compelling device.

The rumors of the iPhone SE 4 continue to swirl and the latest information makes it seem like Apple is expecting enough demand for the low-cost model that it's bringing in more than one display supplier for it.

As reported by The Elec, LG Display is rumored to be Apple's secondary supplier for the upcoming iPhone SE 4. The company has been using BOE displays in a number of iPhone models in an effort to break from its reliance on Samsung Display and LG Display alone, but it looks like LG is a tough one to pull away from.

According to the report, "Next year, BOE will be the primary vendor while LG Display, as a secondary vendor, will provide the screens mostly for its legacy models, sources said."

We have so many details of the iPhone SE 4 now

Regardless of when it comes out, it seems there's going to be a lot to love about the iPhone SE 4. As reported earlier this month, a new leak dropped a ton of details about the next generation of the iPhone SE, and there are some great updates on the way.

The iPhone SE 4 is expected to feature a 6-inch OLED screen with a 60Hz refresh rate, the A18 processor to support Apple Intelligence features, up to 8GB of RAM, a 48MP rear camera, an aluminum frame like the iPhone 15, a USB-C port instead of Lightning, and Face ID instead of Touch ID. If true, all of this would mark the biggest update to the iPhone SE in the history of the iPhone SE.

And, at a rumored price of $499, you're getting a heck of a lot of iPhone for that price. The only problem is that the phone isn't expected to come out when Apple releases the iPhone 16 this fall. According to an earlier report, it could be March 2025 before we see the company release its new entry-level iPhone.

We've been waiting for Apple to officially announce an iPhone SE 4 for years now. With rumors and leaks building and building, it seemed that we might be getting close to the company actually releasing the long-anticipated model. Now, we have another indication that we're this close to the iPhone SE 4 being a reality.

In a new report from The Information, suppliers that work with Apple are preparing to ramp up production for a next-generation iPhone SE model this fall. According to the suppliers, ramp-up for the iPhone SE 4 is expected to go into effect specifically in October.

That's an interesting timeline. With an iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro event likely on the way in September as per Apple's usual timeline, it doesn't seem like we'll be in store for the new iPhone SE that month. Instead, we'll likely have to wait until at least October to get our hands on the new budget phone from the company.

The iPhone SE has historically been announced by Tim Cook and team at an event that usually happens in March. If things ramp up in October, Apple could be planning to release the iPhone SE 4 towards the end of 2024 or the start of 2025 instead of waiting for a March event.

There's a lot to look forward to with the iPhone SE 4

Ever since Apple got rid of the iPhone mini, I've been holding out hope that the company would focus its attention on making the iPhone SE into something worthy of replacing it. With this latest rumor, that might actually be the case.

In a post on Weibo from an account called Ice Universe, we got what are potentially details of the iPhone SE 4 which is expected to be released as soon as this fall. While the iPhone SE has been doomed to the design of the iPhone 8 for years now, it looks like the model is finally getting an upgrade to take on the design language of the iPhone 12-15.

If these rumors are true, I might be downgrading from my iPhone 15 Pro to the iPhone SE 4.

What are the rumors with the iPhone SE 4

The display on the iPhone SE 4 is expected to get upgraded to a 6-inch OLED screen like the iPhone 15. It is also rumored to feature a 60Hz refresh rate like the iPhone 15 — no 120Hz refresh rate like the iPhone 15 Pro. That's pretty expected though. Apple doesn't call it ProMotion for nothing.

The phone is also expected to feature the A18 processor which is expected to debut in the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro later this year. It will also come packed with 6GB or 8GB of RAM, a reasonable amount of RAM for an entry-level smartphone. This will ensure that the iPhone SE 4 is capable of all of the features that Apple Intelligence will launch when the AI technology starts rolling out in beta.

The rear camera of the iPhone SE 4 is expected to feature a 48MP lens, the first time such a huge lens comes to the iPhone SE. It'll be interesting to see if there's still only one camera on the rear of the iPhone SE, but that would be fine if it was the case.

Like the non-Pro models of the flagship iPhones, the new iPhone SE is expected to feature an aluminum frame. That's perfectly fine — I've enjoyed the Titanium frame of my iPhone 15 Pro but I haven't felt like moving back to aluminum on an iPhone 16 or iPhone SE 4 would be a huge deal.

Of course, since we're in 2024, the new iPhone SE is going to ditch the Lightning port for good in favor of a USB-C port. It is also dropping Touch ID in favor of Face ID, another round of "it's about time, Apple." Those are definitely two things that'll make the iPhone SE a worthy entry-level phone for the company.

Best yet? The price. The rumor says that the iPhone SE 4 will cost anywhere between $499 and $549. If that comes in under $500, the iPhone SE 4 might be an iPhone 16 killer. We'll have to wait to see if the rumors are true, but I for one am excited to see what Apple has in store for its most languished iPhone model. If the iPhone mini is dead forever, the least Apple can do is make the iPhone SE an incredible option for all of us.

The current iPhone SE has been around since March 2022 which means that it is now more than two years since Apple's budget phone was refreshed. Back in 2022, the new model was a reasonable upgrade over the previous one, albeit one that immediately looked out of date beside the best iPhones of the year thanks to the use of a Home button. Two years later, that Home button is just one reminder that the iPhone SE isn't getting any younger. And it's high time that changed.

It was already time for a new iPhone SE before today's launch of the CMF Phone 1, but it's a launch that has once again proven just how much Apple needs to show its budget offering some love. CMF is a budget sub-brand of Nothing, a company that already offers relatively cheap Android phones compared to the likes of Samsung and other bigger names. The Phone 1 starts at $199, less than half the price of the current iPhone SE.

So given that price disparity you'd expect the CMF Phone 1 to be terrible, wouldn't you? But at first blush it's anything but. Let's dive in.

A modern budget device

The first glimpse of the Phone 1 shows a device that looks thoroughly modern in a way the iPhone SE just can't manage. It's an all-screen affair with a hole-punch camera. The display is a huge 6.67-inch Super AMOLED offering that has a 2,000-nit peak brightness and a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. That's iPhone 15 Pro-like buttery-smooth and a huge improvement over anything the iPhone SE could even dream of.

Things are impressive on the inside, too. There's a pretty nondescript Mediatek Dimensity 7300 chip inside, but it's paired with 8GB of RAM plus an "8GB RAM booster," whatever that means. But over at the Apple Store, you'll need to buy an iPhone 15 Pro to get 8GB of RAM. Yes, Android needs more RAM because of the way it works but still, that doesn't change the fact that the chips are there.

The specs continue with a 50-megapixel Sony camera around the back and a 16-megapixel camera up front while a 5,000mAh battery means you won't run for the charger too often. And it, dare I say, looks nice as well. It's no monolithic slab of titanium and glass, to be sure. But it comes in some colors that aren't gray and has a robust design that gives me iPhone 5C vibes. I like it. I like it a lot.

But there's a 'but'

That isn't to say it's all rainbows and unicorns with the Phone 1, though. First, there's the obvious problem – it runs Android. Sure, it's Android 14 so the latest that Google has to offer, but it's still Android and if you're reading this, you're probably an iOS kinda person.

Then, there are the corners that have been cut. One that stands out immediately is the 5G modem that sorta-kinda supports 5G but not really, at least not in the United States. And you can't really use it on Verizon, either. So there's that.

Other caveats include the lack of wireless charging although you do get 33W fast charging which is more than the iPhone. There's no NFC, either, which would no doubt put some buyers off.

But to quibble is to miss the point here. This phone costs just $199 and even if you threw an NFC chip and a proper 5G modem in there the iPhone SE's $429 would still be considerably more expensive than the CMF Phone 1. And it's thought the iPhone SE 4 could see a price hike as well.

So, here we are. Would I buy the Phone 1? Probably not, but it would be nice to have something comparable in the Apple ecosystem for those who would. Or if Apple really does want to stick to a price point of around $400, it could at least sell an iPhone that doesn't look like it came from 2016 with similarly outdated features.

The current iPhone SE, the third of its name, is very much starting to show its age. It has a 4.7-inch display which is miniscule by today's standards, and that isn't the worst part. Sitting below that postage stamp screen is a Home button, the likes of which Apple hasn't placed on a flagship phone since 2017 with the arrival of the iPhone 8. And even then, thanks to the launch of the iPhone X, it immediately looked outdated.

Priced at $429, the iPhone SE doesn't look like a modern iPhone but you can still walk into an Apple Store and pick one up today. Whether you should or not is up for debate, all the rumors point to Apple finally, finally updating it in 2025. That launch has been coming for what feels like forever though, so I'll believe it when I see it — in-house 5G modem or not, as has so often been rumored.

There's a lot to like about what we've heard so far, too. All the rumors point to an iPhone SE 4 that will essentially be an iPhone 14 Lite, of sorts, and that's no bad thing. The iPhone 14 sells for at least $699 today, so this is very much a modern design with a modern price to match. And while the iPhone SE isn't expected to cost quite so much, a new report suggests that it could cost significantly more than the $429 of the current model. In fat, it could cost as much as $499 although that seems unlikely. But even if it did, it would still be a strong option for a whole lot of people.

An iPhone 14 in disguise

This latest news comes via X leaker Revegnus who claims that Apple is aiming to try and keep the new iPhone SE price around the same $429 that buyers pay today. A 10% price hike is a possibility we're told, but Apple is keen to make sure that it doesn't breach the $500 barrier with its budget handset.

Even if Apple does choose to charge $499 for the 2025 iPhone SE, it will still be a great buy for people who want to get a (relatively) inexpensive iPhone. It's expected to come with high-end features like Face ID and an OLED display, both firsts for the lineup, while the display size will increase from the minuscule 4.7-inch to the much more airy 6.1-inch display of Apple's modern devices. A switch to USB-C is of course a given, while there is also the assumption that Apple will bring the Action button from the iPhone 15 Pro to the iPhone SE, too. Ultimately, all new iPhones will have the button from the iPhone 16 onwards, it appears.

The iPhone SE was last updated in 2022 and the $30 price increase over the previous model was unfortunate. But that price increase came with nothing more than a speed bump. This time around a whole new, bigger display is in play as is a new method of authentication for Apple Pay, unlocking the device itself,  and of course, apps. These are features that people want, but they don't necessarily want to pay premium iPhone prices to get them. And while a $499 price point isn't what most would call budget, it's fair to say that the iPhone SE 4 isn't made up of budget features.

At $499 the iPhone SE 4 would be a cheaper iPhone that looks like it belongs, and sometimes that's more than enough to make it a good buy.

But while the current model might not lag too far behind in terms of its internals, the external design looks old and dated. It still has a Home Button, for example, and that's one thing that the iPhone SE 4 is now tipped to change. But its budget credentials might not be quite as strong as they once were.

According to a new report, we shouldn't expect the iPhone SE 4 to fill the space that's currently being dominated by inexpensive Android phones when it debuts in 2025. Instead, we're told to expect an iPhone that will sell for more than $400 which may well be less than the flagship iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro, but will still be far too much for some.

Still too expensive

This is according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, writing in his weekly Power On newsletter, at least. Gurman believes that Apple's iPhone SE will still sit at a price point that's just too high, likely retaining or even increasing the current $429 price tag.

"Ever since the original iPhone went on sale, there have been calls for a less expensive model. But it’s not something Apple has pursued aggressively," Gurman notes, adding that the iPhone 5c was one of the first attempts albeit with a modest $100. The $399 debut price of the iPhone SE was better, but that increased to the $429 that buyers must pay today.

Moving forward, Gurman expects that Apple will launch an iPhone SE 4 in 2025 but that it will feature "a faster chip and premium materials" which means "you can bet the price will stay well above $400."

Previous rumors have suggested that the iPhone SE 4 will essentially be a rebadged iPhone 14 complete with a 6.1-inch display, Face ID, and an OLED construction. Those things will take the tired iPhone SE 3 and revamp it to become a thoroughly modern device. USB-C and an as-yet unconfirmed chip upgrade. All of these things cost money, and it's likely that's why we won't see a significant price reduction this time out.

But this is all bad news for anyone who looks at the cheapest Android phones with envy. It's also bad news for Apple's emerging markets which can be much more price-conscious than the countries it has historically done well in across North America and Europe. The chances of a new iPhone costing $250 any time soon seem extremely remote. For that, you're probably going to want something with a Samsung logo on the back.

I’ve always had a soft spot for the smaller iPhone SE — so much so, that I bought it immediately when it launched in 2016.

At the time, this first-generation SE had the design of the iPhone 5s from 2013, packed with the power of the then-class-leading iPhone 6S. I loved it, as it felt like the best of both worlds. I still wasn’t convinced that bigger iPhones were needed back then, so having a smaller handset with the latest features made it, for me at least, one of the best iPhones ever made.

Above all, I could use it with just one hand — unheard of in 2024 with the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max! It felt easier to use, and more comfortable to hold — at no point did I fear that it would slip out of my hand.

Recent rumors of an iPhone SE 4 say that it will look like an iPhone 13, but will be powered by some aspects of the iPhone 15, such as the A16 Bionic chip and a USB-C port. 

These new rumors made me nostalgic for that first-generation model, and how it could fit into today’s lineup. One rumored spec in particular — a 6.1-inch screen — jumped out at me though, and for all the wrong reasons.

A four inch Special Edition

There have been two occasions in the past when I doubted the rumors and was very surprised when they turned out to be true. The first was the appearance of the iPad mini in 2012, followed by the announcement of the smaller iPhone SE in 2016.

I had been happy with owning an iPhone 6s and iPhone 6 previously, but I missed the smaller design of the iPhone 5. It looked like an elegant Leica camera in a dark shade of blue, so to go to a design that looked like a chocolate bar with the iPhone 6 in 2014 felt like a step down to me. 

Imagine my surprise then, to see the first-generation SE model looking exactly like an iPhone 5. Six months after owning a 6S, I traded it in and owned the SE until I was swayed by the iPhone 7 that September. 

I used it for everything during those six months — gaming, photography, work — and was constantly surprised by its capabilities, given its 'budget' orientation. Even its battery surprised me, lasting far longer than my iPhone 5 used to at 7 hours thanks to the A9 chip and its improved power management.

The SE remains one of the most stunning and fun iPhones I’ve ever owned. Fast-forward to 2024 and I've grown to love larger devices like my iPhone 15 Pro Max with its triple-camera design, Dynamic Island, and 120Hz ProMotion display. I wouldn't go back to a small SE but, if I stop and dream for a moment — what if just some, if not all, the latest iPhone tech could be squeezed again into a small-scale iPhone SE. Could it fill the iPhone mini-shaped hole in Apple's line-up?

Could the smaller design return?

Look, I get it. Bigger phones are the standard these days. It can’t be avoided. Everyone wants to watch and capture content on the biggest and brightest screen possible

Yet I can’t help but think that there’s still room for an iPhone mini. The look of that first-generation iPhone SE is timeless to me. If it was unveiled in 2024 with some tweaks, no one would blink twice and think it was a dated design for a cheaper phone.

Imagine a first-gen iPhone SE-inspired design, that has the screen of an iPhone 15 Pro, and two more camera lenses to put it on par with the high-end iPhones. Add in USB-C, a ‘Capture’ button from iPhone 16 Pro if the rumors on that turn out to be true, and you’ve got a perfect 4-inch iPhone for the modern age.

I’d go all-in on this. Yes, the mini designs of iPhone 12 and 13 didn’t do well — but if it takes the best design from the past decade, to set it apart from the flagship iPhones, there could be something that would appeal to so many, myself included. 

Granted, the rumors state that the iPhone SE 4 will have a 6.1-inch screen, and so this ship may have already sailed — but I can’t help but feel that it’s the wrong way to go. The handset should be smaller, not bigger. What's the point of a range if they're all broadly conforming to one style and size? The SE was always designed to appeal to those that wanted a cheaper phone that didn’t share the same design as the latest iPhone lineup. The SE 4 shouldn’t stray away from that, and Apple could soothe the broken hearted iPhone mini fans in the process.

iPhone SE 4’s specs have leaked, showcasing how the upcoming handset will almost be on par with iPhone 15.

According to Nguyen Phi Hung on X, the next SE will look like an iPhone 13 from the front, with a 6.1-inch display and a smaller notch that includes Face ID. From the back, however, there will be a single camera unlike the best iPhones on sale today. This will be able to record in 1080p, as well as Cinematic Mode, which is essentially Portrait Mode for video. You’ll be able to take photos with Smart HDR 5, which can brighten up an image when needed, but Night Mode will be absent.

The device will also feature a USB-C port and an A16 Bionic chip — so it will be taking some features from the iPhone 15.

iPhone SE 3 released in April 2022, which takes a lot of features from the iPhone 13 including the A15 Bionic chip, as well as the camera with Portrait Mode and Smart HDR 4. That said, it’s starting to show its age with the powerful iPhone 15 devices, especially when compared to the SE 3’s camera. Rumors hint at an early 2025 launch.

The best starter iPhone for your Gran

The newest leaks, if true, make the iPhone SE 4 very appealing to anyone on a budget. The camera sounds like a great upgrade from the previous SE, and having a USB-C port will give some uniformity to the entire iPhone line. With the SE 3 starting at $429 / £429 for a 64GB model, we’re hoping the price won’t increase too much for the SE 4.

There’s a lot to like from these latest leaks, so if you’ve been looking into a cheap iPhone for a while, 2025 could be the perfect time to buy an SE.

A new report has revealed that Apple’s next budget iPhone, the iPhone SE 4, might finally arrive next year with an enticing OLED upgrade. 

The iPhone SE is the cheapest model in the iPhone lineup and for years has sported a legacy design replete with Home Button and Touch ID. Ever since Apple ditched both of the latter features for the futuristic FaceID, that design has looked out of place and dated alongside Apple’s best iPhones, including the new iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models, or even older models like the iPhone 13 or 14. To that end, we’re expecting a new “iPhone SE 4” with a complete redesign soon, and now another new report says 2025 will be the year Apple’s budget iPhone finally gets the upgrade it deserves. 

Over the weekend The Elec reported that suppliers of parts for the device “have proposed their prices to Apple for OLED panels aimed at iPhone SE 4 that will launch early in 2025.” As the report notes, Apple is planning a significant display upgrade that will see the iPhone SE adopt OLED technology for the first time, replacing the LCD display it inherited from the old iPhone 8. 

iPhone SE 4’s OLED upgrade 

While the negotiations for the price of these displays are still ongoing between Apple and suppliers, The Elec reports that “prices are considerably lower than those of iPhone 15,” because they use “recycled parts and legacy tech.” 

In fact, the report says it's likely that the OLED panel used in the iPhone SE 4 “will likely be the same one as those used in iPhone 14 back in 2022 as well as iPhone 13 a year earlier than that.” That means we can expect an iPhone SE 4 with a 6.1-inch display.

While it was previously leaked that the next iPhone SE might get a more futuristic design based on the iPhone XR, the most recent reports indicate Apple will instead base the device on the aforementioned iPhone 14. With that in mind, the device should also feature USB-C, Face ID, a complete design overhaul, and maybe even the Action Button introduced to the Pro model iPhones last year. 

Apple will, of course, have to strike a balance between an exciting new design and features, and retaining the much lower price of the iPhone SE range. It currently retails starting at just $429, the cheapest iPhone you can buy from Apple by some margin. All three iPhone SE models have been unveiled by Apple in either March or April previously, a timeline that fits nicely with this new “early 2025” window.

The iPhone SE, Apple Watch SE and iPad (2021) all have one thing in common – they act as the cheapest, entry-level models in Apple’s many beloved product ranges, from smartphones and smartwatches to tablets and laptops (and many other Apple devices we won’t get into here).

But if you’re buying one of these Apple models for the first time, you may not be sure whether the cheapest option is necessarily the best one for you. It’s easy to worry about missing out on key features, or feel pressured to push for a model that’s actually a little out of your budget.

We’re here to tell you that the cheaper Apple models do exist for a reason – to offer a distilled product experience at a more reasonable cost, even if the luxury Apple brand adds something of a price premium across the board.

So if you’re eyeing up the iPhone SE, the iPad (2021), or the Apple Watch SE, here’s what you need to consider before making a final purchase.

iPhone SE: the pocket-sized smartphone

Smartphones are bigger than ever, thanks to increasingly bezel-free screens, improved display technology, and the pressure to both capture and witness high-quality video in the social media age. But for those who are content with a smaller phone, one that actually fits in a pocket comfortably and can be easily navigated with a single hand, the iPhone SE (‘Special Edition’) is a great alternative.

2022's 3rd-generation model comes with a 4.7-inch display, which is about a 20% size reduction compared to the new 6.1-inch iPhone 15. The SE has the same aluminum construction and glass back as that model, just without the screen-strengthening Ceramic Shield that most iPhones have had since the iPhone 12. The A15 Bionic chipset is still pretty capable (the iPhone 15 is only using the A16, after all), though you won’t get Face ID or even the USB-C connections of more recent handsets (Lightning cable it is.)

That size reduction does have a big impact on camera quality, mind. Due to the smaller build of the smartphone, it’s harder to fit in multiple lenses – and the iPhone SE makes do with a single 12MP camera and 1x optical zoom instead of the 48MP Ultra Wide versions and 0.5-5x zoom found in newer Apple smartphones. Limited space for a battery means the SE also has a projected 15-hour battery life for constant video playback, whereas the iPhone 15 Pro Max offers double that amount.

A few trade-offs, then, but for media-light Apple consumers after a more convenient size and shape, the iPhone SE has plenty to recommend it.

iPad (2021): the entry-level tablet

The ninth-generation iPad released in 2021 – and while it's not technically the smallest iPad available, it is the cheapest model available right now.

This is the default iPad choice for most. With a 10.2-inch screen, companion stylus, and $329 price tag, it offers the basic Apple tablet experience for those after it. This 2021 model comes with 64GB and 256GB storage options, an 8MP rear camera with 1080p video, and an A13 Bionic chipset that's getting a little long in the tooth these days.

The issue is that there's a newer 10th-generation iPad (2022), one that packs in an A14 processor, an improved neural engine, a 10.9-inch screen, and a jump to 4K video on its 12MP rear camera. It also comes with a USB-C port instead of the Lightning input of the ninth-generation model. Notably, you'll need the newer iPad to get 5G cellular instead of 4G, too.

You're paying a little more at $449 for the base model, mind, but the ninth-generation iPad has fallen behind on a few metrics, from its cable standards and cellular connectivity to video quality and more. It's still a good buy for those after a simpler experience, but likely won't be on the market in another year or two.

As a side note, the compact 8.3-inch iPad mini is actually pricier than both of these models, starting at $499 – despite its smaller size, it largely matches the specification of the 10th-generation iPad, but with a speedier A15 Bionic processor, improved P3 color range, and support for the Apple Pencil 2, it should feel a little more luxurious.

The iPad Pro (2022) or iPad Air 5 models ship with Apple’s newer M-class processors and offer more complex CPU and GPU setups, so you should know you’re not getting top-class performance in the 2021 iPad, which won’t be quite as equipped at complex computing tasks, or anything related to gaming (say, on Apple Arcade).

However, all of these models are notably cheaper than the $599 iPad Air or the $1,099 iPad Pro 12.9-inch, and that may be enough to sway someone after a starter iPad.

Apple Watch SE: the simplest Apple smartwatch

We’re now on the second iteration of the Apple Watch SE (or ‘Special Edition’). As with the iPhone SE, those two letters point to a distilled product experience in a slightly cheaper package, with the Apple Watch SE 2 starting at $249 instead of the $399 price tag of the Apple Watch Series 9 or the $799 RRP of the Apple Watch Ultra 2.

The Apple Watch SE offers broadly the same experience as its pricier siblings, with the same WatchOS interface experience, 99% of the same apps, and similar sizing options to the Series 9 (albeit 40mm/44mm rather than 41mm/45mm). Like the others, it should be a joy for those who like sleek Apple hardware, and want a smartwatch that syncs with an iPhone, allows for hands-free calls, offers contactless Apple Pay, and much much more.

However, $250 is notably cheaper than the standard model, and that means it comes with some predictable downgrades. The display has a peak brightness of 1,000 nits, which is half the luminance of the Series 9, and lacks the latter’s ‘always on’ feature. Additionally, you have to make do without double tap gestures, the precise iPhone finding feature, or the speedy on-device Siri processing found on higher-end models.

You may feel a little intimidated by the health tech packed into most Apple smartwatches, and worry about missing out on important sensors. But even the SE model comes with a heart rate tracker, and notifications that point to irregular rhythms or ‘low cardio fitness’ (we get it, we’ve been sitting at a desk all day). 

You have to make do without a Blood Oxygen sensor – or the ECG (electrocardiogram) app that can spot signs of Atrial Fibrillation, also known as ‘arrhythmia’, which can lead to “blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications” (American Heart Association). But these are quite specialist functions and not a necessity for casual consumers. 

For all but the most committed (or most health conscious) Apple die-hards, the Apple Watch SE should suffice – until we get a truly minimalist Apple smartwatch, at least.

• Apple Watch SE review

Apple has added its first-generation iPhone SE and second-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro to its vintage list.

For those unfamiliar, this means that if you need one of these devices repaired, it’s no longer guaranteed that your nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider will have the required part in stock. Adding to the vintage list usually happens five years after Apple stopped distributing them for sale.

With the first-generation iPhone SE and second-generation iPad Pro both being pulled from sale in October 2018, they recently became eligible for the vintage list. Apple has a support document that explains this in more detail — but if you’re still rocking with one of these devices, it may be time to look at an upgrade.

Pour one out for the best iPhone SE — iMore’s take

I’ve always been a fan of the original iPhone SE — from its inspired iPhone 5s design to the camera and chip taken from the iPhone 6s. It was a powerful device for its time, and I even owned one for a short while when it launched in March 2016.

It was a refreshing change from owning an iPhone 6s and iPhone 6 previously. Thanks to its smaller 4-inch screen, I only had to use my thumb with the S. With the device sharing the same chip as my previous 6s, it felt like the perfect phone to me at the time — power but in a smaller size.

However, my time with the device only lasted six months, as I was swayed by the iPhone 7 in September. I’ve always had a soft spot for the SE, and its third-generation model is still available, which packs the same chip as the iPhone 14, and a camera that’s as powerful as the iPhone 13.

So while it’s time to say goodbye to the first-generation iPhone SE, I’ll remember those few short months I had with it fondly — a device that I still regard to be one of the best iPhones ever made.

The iPhone SE is the most budget of Apple's budget iPhone options right now, and it's starting to look a little long in the tooth. The Home button and Touch ID give the game away in a world of Face ID and edge-to-edge displays. Thankfully, an update is expected to bring those to the next iPhone SE, and this concept shows just how gorgeous that could be.

We've been hearing iPhone SE 4 rumors on and off for a long time now, and they call for what will amount to a modified iPhone 14 design mixed with a little bit of the iPhone 15 Pro for good measure. This concept imagines that in 3D form, complete with a trailer that shows off what an Apple-style ad might look like.

If you're holding off buying a new iPhone because you want to shop in and around the iPhone SE's $429 price point, this concept is for you.

iPhone 14 looks at an iPhone SE price point

The concept and video were created by designer 4RMD and you can watch the whole thing below. It isn't a long video — Apple ads aren't long, after all — but it's long enough to show off everything that could make the iPhone SE 4 so awesome.

Those things begin with the removal of the Home button and the arrival of Face ID to handle biometric authentication. That also means that we swap the 6.1-inch OLED display as it works its way to all four corners of the device.

Relatively recent rumors have been incorporated here, including the 48-megapixel camera that is expected to make the move from the iPhone 14 Pro. USB-C is also present, as will be the case with all future iPhones. The iPhone 15 Pro's Action button is also tipped for a move down the lineup and it's part of this concept as well.

The iPhone SE has been one of the best budget entryways into the iPhone ecosystem for years, and now a major new leak could reveal it is only about to get better with the iPhone SE 4.

According to a report from MacRumors, the iPhone SE 4, known as codename ghost, is based on the architecture of the standard iPhone 14 model, with a very similar chassis. It will reportedly be getting the iPhone 15 Pro’s Action Button and the brand-new USB-C port but everything else will stay the same. The screen is said to receive an OLED panel similar to that found in the iPhone 14 and will be removing the Touch ID (and the Home Button), in favor of the modern Face ID. 

On the back of the device, the report says the SE will have a single camera and flash in one, like the previous SE. MacRumors goes on to clarify its report stating "It's worth noting that the information presented here is preliminary, pre-preproduction information. The fourth-generation ‌iPhone SE‌ is still early in the development process, and changes are always possible. As a result, the information may not fully align with the specifications of final mass-production units, assuming the project makes it to this stage."

A solid lineup - iMore’s take

The iPhone SE is a very nice product for Apple to have. For just a few hundred dollars, you get many of the things that fans choose Apple for, like the unique OS, ease of use, and the iPhone design. This is before mentioning how interesting this new iPhone SE appears to be. Removing the classic Home Button and bringing in more recent changes like USB-C and an Action Button means that SE users aren’t left out of all the fun of a new year of iPhone. 

On the Apple Store right now, you are able to buy the brand new iPhone 15 line, the iPhone 14 , the iPhone 13, and the iPhone SE. Given the 15 replaced the old iPhone 12, adding a brand new SE would only make the lower price range even more appealing to potential customers. Not only this but the addition of an Action Button is a sign of commitment to the new tech, suggesting we may get it in the standard iPhone 16 next year. 

It will be a shame to see that Home Button go but we’re getting a much nicer SE in return. 

The iPhone traditionally had just one model, but that all changed when Apple first introduced the cheaper iPhone 5C. Over time that was succeeded by the iPhone SE, which has had three generations now. The next generation of the iPhone SE, the iPhone SE 4, is set to be a significant upgrade, and a new rumor tells us what we can expect.

The rumor comes from Unknownz21 (@URedditor) and says that the iPhone SE 4 will come with a design similar to that of the iPhone 14, as well as Face ID, USB-C, and the Action Button. The major difference from the iPhone 14's design, it appears, will be the camera on the back, which will remain a single-camera setup.

iPhone SE 4 could be a major redesign

Apple has kepy the iPhone SE rather muted to keep the price down. The general idea has been to keep an aging design on this phone so that the development and manufacturing costs low. That's why the iPhone SE 3 currently has the same design as the iPhone 8, while having upgraded internals.

As such, the iPhone SE 4 is likely to arrive with a newer design. That means a notch, which brings Face ID. It appears Apple may choose to opt for the iPhone 14 design with this, as the rumor suggests. However, the SE 4 will have a bit of unification to it as, apparently, it may get the upcoming Action Button, as well as USB-C.

With the Dynamic Island set to come to all of the best iPhone models in the 15 series, the notch will officially become a retired design element. So it makes sense that the iPhone SE 4 will opt for this design. At the same time, we're likely to get flat edges.

The only major difference between the design of the iPhone 14 and the SE will be the back camera layout. The SE is likely to stick to the single-camera layout. It will be interesting to see how Apple sets it apart from the iPhone 14. It's likely that the SE 4 will stick to an older chip. The SE is also the only iPhone selling right now that has an LCD display. That may be another change that the SE 4 gets, with a potential switch to OLEDs.

Anyone holding off buying a new iPhone while Apple gets around to updating the iPhone SE might want to reconsider because that wait just got longer.

Reports on when the new iPhone SE 4 will arrive have varied in recent months but it looks increasingly likely that the iPhone SE isn't going to get any love for a good long while. Not until 2025 at the earliest, it would appear.

That's after not one but two analysts said that they believe that Apple is "unlikely to launch" a refreshed iPhone SE in 2024.

No new iPhone for you

And that's a shame because the iPhone SE is the best iPhone for a lot of people and now the 2022 model looks set to hang around for some time yet.

Writing in a research note seen by MacRumors, Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis and Tom O'Malley shared that they believe a 2024 release is unlikely for the new iPhone SE. That's based on "multiple conversations" with people in Apple's supply chain, we're told.

The current iPhone SE is the only one that still sports a Home button, and that should tell you a lot. It also has a small 4.7-inch display and a 12-megapixel rear camera, all things that we would like to see Apple improve with any future upgrade. Priced at $429, it's the cheapest iPhone you can buy but with older iPhones often available refurbished and for a great price, it might not be the best iPhone to choose right now.

And considering the iPhone SE now looks set to run all the way through 2023 and 2024 as it is, that's definitely going to be the case long before an updated model ever ships.

When it does ship, the new iPhone SE could well borrow design cues from Apple's more modern devices including a notch and the removal of the Home button. It isn't clear whether that will also include the addition of Face ID, or if Touch ID will be built into the power button, however.

The iPhone 16 lineup is likely to be revealed in a few weeks, but the iPhone SE 4 won't be among them.

The budget-focused device is reportedly being positioned for a 2025 reveal and release, but we've already been picking up whispers of what could be the most exciting SE yet.

From a total redesign to bring it in line with modern phones, to being able to run  Apple Intelligence features on-device, it really could be the first year the SE makes a huge splash.

Here's all we know about the iPhone SE 4, according to the latest reports and rumors.

iPhone SE 4: What we'd like to see

The SE is a fantastic addition to the iPhone family, and we'd love to see the smartphone get a much-needed design overhaul to fit users' needs in 2023. A design similar to the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, would make the device feel modern and on par with some of Apple's latest offerings.

Add to that form factor an OLED display and the better battery life that comes with a larger 6.1-inch device and the iPhone SE 4 would be one of the best offerings on the market for budget-conscious buyers.

Looking at the rumors, that's probably what we'll get, even though a faster refresh rate display and Dynamic Island would be lovely. Don't expect those high-end features on this less-expensive device, though it would be great to see them.

iPhone SE 4: Design

The iPhone SE 3 (2022) is Apple’s smallest iPhone, housed in the body of an iPhone 8. With thick bezels, Touch ID in the Home button, and a 4.7-inch display, the iPhone SE could really do with a bit of modernization to bring the device up to date with the rest of Apple’s lineup of iPhones.

Jon Prosser, a well-regarded iPhone leaker, had reported that the next iPhone SE could follow the trend of using older components and this time look eerily similar to the iPhone XR from 2018. If this was to be the case then the iPhone SE 4 would get a full-screen makeover alongside a 6.1-inch display.

More recent reports from Kuo fell in line with the rumored 6.1-inch display and indicated a completely different design approach that would represent a "minor modification" of Apple's current best iPhone, the iPhone 14 rather than the previously reported XR.

In mid-March, Kuo admitted that his February leak about the iPhone SE 4 may have been a bit wide of the mark. "I previously predicted that the iPhone SE 4 would be a derivative model of the iPhone 14," he tweeted. "However, my latest research indicates that this derivative model will likely be an engineering prototype." 

Back in mid-2023, leaker Unknownz21 reported that Apple is indeed planning a new iPhone SE 4 based on the iPhone 14. That would indicate a 6.1-inch display with a form factor of 5.78 inches by 2.82 inches, and weight of around 170 grams. The design would also see an end of the SE's aged forehead and chin design in favor of the current language pioneered with the iPhone X. Namely, an edge-to-edge display, notch for Face ID, and no Home Button. It would also mean square edges and a flat, glossy back.

Renders of the iPhone SE 4 leaked in March appear to show off a display notch, USB-C port, and a 6.1-inch display.

According to leaked specs in April, the iPhone SE will measure 148.5 x 71.2 x 7.8mm, weighing in at 166 grams, ever-so-slightly larger than the iPhone 14. Other rumored design features from this leak include 7000 series aluminum alloy, a right-angled frame, glass on both the front and rear of the device (not a Ceramic Shield) and a front design that looks like Apple's iPhone 13. Meanwhile, the rear of the device apparently looks like the iPhone XR. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, also reporting in April 2024, suggested the iPhone SE 4 would be "moving to an all-screen design that makes the device look more like a modern smartphone."

iPhone SE 4: Colors

There are three colors for the iPhone SE (2022): Midnight, Starlight, and PRODUCT(RED). You have three capacities to choose from as well: 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB, and the price is $429, $479, and $579, respectively.

While it may not be quite as exciting as the iPhone 13 series, which now comes in gorgeous green hues, the iPhone SE still offers a lot of bang for your buck. It's too early to guess as to the colors of an unreleased phone such as the iPhone SE 4, but we certainly like the colorful options that let our phones stand out from the crowd. Fingers crossed!

iPhone SE 4: Display

The most recent report indicates that Apple could debut the iPhone SE 4 with an OLED panel from the iPhone 14. That would mean a 6.1-inch all-screen OLED display and a 2532x1170-pixel resolution at 460 ppi. The OLED panel from the iPhone 14 supports HDR, True Tone, Wide color (P3), Haptic Touch, and a 2 million to 1 contrast ratio. 

Leaked iPhone SE 4 specs from April 2024 indicate that the display will be a 6.1-inch LTPS OLED 60Hz display. That would mean a broadly similar experience to the iPhone 14, but would preclude 120Hz ProMotion, a variable refresh rate, or any type of Always-On display. 

A report in July suggested that LG Display will be the secondary supplier for the iPhone SE 4's display.

In August, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman added that the device will have a "crisper OLED display", too, but no further information was given.

iPhone SE 4: Features

What will be in the new iPhone SE? Obviously, Apple's less expensive line of products won't embrace all of the top of the line bells and whistles that make a flagship phone worthy of the name. But what exactly will we see? Here's our rundown of some key features and specifications, and what we know about each so far. 

Face ID

If Apple was to go down the route of introducing the notch to the SE in order to keep the device looking different to the iPhone 15's Dynamic Island, then we’re likely to see Face ID introduced to the SE 4. 

Adding Face ID would be a huge selling point for the budget iPhone, especially with the cost of competitors like the Google Pixel 7 slowly but surely getting closer to the entry-level iPhones. However, Apple could introduce Touch ID in the power button as it has for the iPad mini 6. The aforementioned Unknownz21 leak indicates Apple is planning to add Face ID to the iPhone SE 4. 

A16 chip

The iPhone SE 3 was released in 2022 and given the same A15 chip as the iPhone 13. If the iPhone SE 4 releases in early 2025 after the iPhone 16 then it would make sense for the device to gain an A16 chip from the iPhone 15, with Apple reserving its most potent iPhone chips for the top-of-the-line models. 

Leaked iPhone SE 4 specs from April 2024 indicate that Apple will adopt the A16 Bionic chip which first debuted in the iPhone 14 Pro. The chip features two high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores, as well as a 6-core CPU which was 40 faster than A15. Apple also claim the 5-core GPU has 50 percent more memory bandwidth than its predecessors. It also features a 16-core Neural Engine for on-device machine learning. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman also stated in April 2024 that the iPhone SE would feature "a faster chip." 

In August, Gurman suggested the iPhone SE 4 will offer Apple Intelligence, which would require a sizeable internal improvement - and at least 8GB of RAM.

5G and connectivity

Kuo states that Apple is working on an in-house 5G baseband chipset for the iPhone SE 4 which would see the budget iPhone step away from Qualcomm similar to the iPhone 16 reports. Initial reports had stated that Apple would use Qualcomm for a new SE. If Apple goes down the in-house route, we will likely see considerable improvements to the device's network speed. Kuo states that Apple's 5G baseband chip will only support Sub-6GHz 5G speeds.  

Specs for the iPhone SE 4 leaked in April 2024, however, indicate that Apple will stick with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X70 modem for the iPhone SE's 5G. The X70 chip is currently used in Apple's iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. First debuted in 2022, it was the world's first 5G AI processor, using AI-powered optimizations to improve speeds, coverage, and signal strength. 

Other connectivity rumored include Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, and Apple's U1 UWB chip, which powers close-range interactions with devices like the HomePod 2 and Apple's AirTag. 

USB-C

With EU charging laws coming into effect and the iPhone 15 switching to USB-C, expect the iPhone SE 4 to also ditch Lightning in favor of the more popular charging standard. The presence of USB-C was also indicated in leaked iPhone SE 4 specs from April 2024. 

Battery

Leaked iPhone SE 4 battery specs indicate the phone will ship with a 3279 mAh battery, capable of 20W wired charging and 12W wireless charging through MagSafe. The current iPhone SE only offers a 2,018 mAh battery so this would make for a drastic improvement in overall battery life, even despite some extra power-hungry features.  

Action Button

A MacRumors report in September 2023 indicated that Apple would add the Action Button from the iPhone 15 Pro to the iPhone SE 4. The Action Button replaced the Mute Switch in the iPhone and allows users to assign one of several software actions to the button including Translate, Camera, and Shortcuts. 

Memory and storage

According to a report from April 2024, the iPhone SE 4 will feature 6GB of LPDDR5 memory and a choice of either 128GB or 512GB of NVMe flash memory. That would match the current iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

Camera

The latest reports indicate the iPhone SE 4 will only have one camera, just like the current generation models. However, this is likely to receive an upgrade over the current 12MP version. With the iPhone 15 getting the 48MP sensor from the iPhone 14 Pro lineup, its possible this could even trickle down to the budget model by the time it comes out. Otherwise, expect some serious upgrades to the 12MP option. 

Leaked iPhone SE 4 specs in April 2024 indicate the budget model will come with one rear camera, featuring an IMX503 lens, a 1/2.55 sensor, and f/1.8 aperture. It will also reportedly support 1080 Cinematic Mode, as well as Apple's Deep Fusion and Smart HDR technology and portrait mode. Night Mode is not expected to be included, however. 

Release date

The iPhone SE 4 doesn’t have a release date, but iMore's team of experts believes the device will be released in Q1 2025 or later, as with any unreleased Apple products (we're looking at you, Apple Car!), take that with a grain of salt. The most recent report indicates Apple is targeting an iPhone SE 4 launch in "early" 2025. Every previous model of the device has debuted in either March or April. 

A report from Mark Gurman in April 2024 indicates that Apple is targeting a launch window of 2025 for the iPhone SE 4, with another report in August suggesting earlier in the year.

Price

Apple will be looking to keep any new iPhone SE firmly in the "budget" price bracket. To that end, we'd be very surprised if Apple went over the current $429 price point. However, there are quite a few rumored upgrades coming, so it's possible that added manufacturing costs could be passed on to the consumer. As such, there's no guarantee the price might not increase, but we wouldn't expect a major bump if it does. 

In April 2024, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that we should expect the price of the iPhone SE 4 to "stay well above $400."  

What on Earth is happening with the iPhone SE right now? Does anyone know? The analysts certainly don't seem to and it would appear there is a chance that we won't see a new model for some time yet. If ever.

It's that "if ever" part that's most worrying. Apple last refreshed the iPhone SE in 2022 and even then it wasn't a big refresh, at least not externally. We still had the Home button and we still had the massive forehead. But rumors had an iPhone 14-like model coming, Something that would make the iPhone SE more modern.

Now? Now we're told that Apple's best iPhone for the budget-conscious isn't on the roadmap for 2024 or 2025. And that sucks.

The iPhone SE 4 actually wasn't

If supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is on the money — and he often is — the device that we thought was an iPhone 14-like iPhone SE isn't actually a phone that's going to be sold. Instead, Kuo thinks that it was nothing more than an engineering sample designed to test an in-house 5G modem. That means that the phone that analysts and leakers thought was the iPhone SE 4 will never see the light of day.

What's more, Kup says that a refreshed iPhone SE "is not currently part of Apple's new product planning." So we might not be getting a new iPhone SE for another couple of years.

But when will we get one?

That's very much up in the air.

Apple needs an iPhone SE in the lineup

What made the iPhone SE 4 as we knew it so compelling was how it would give Apple a budget iPhone that didn't look like it was out of date the day it was unboxed. I know some people still wax lyrical about the Home button but, frankly, it's time they moved on. The Home button is gone, or at least it should be.

Apple should always offer a budget iPhone and it shouldn't make people use that phone differently from everyone else in the process. That means the same interface and the same way of interacting with it. Which, in turn, means swiping up to close apps and enter multitasking. It's just how iPhones should work in 2023.

If Apple doesn't refresh the iPhone SE with something more modern, it's missing a trick.

If it drops it entirely, it's even worse. The iPhone SE currently sells for $429 whereas the next model in the lineup sells for $599. That's the iPhone 12 and while some will say that's a phone that's more than worth the extra money, they'd be missing the point while also being correct.

Sometimes something being better value doesn't matter. If people are stretching for $429, they just can't go the extra to iPhone 12 money. That's the end of the conversation.

There might be another way

If Apple does want to do away with the iPhone SE, it could do it and still offer something around that $429 price point. Tim Cook's Apple does like to move older devices down the lineup, so why not keep doing it?

My suggestion? Ditch the iPhone SE entirely. Move the iPhone 12 to its price point, and move everything else down at the same time when the iPhone 15 arrives.

Do that, and the lineup goes iPhone 15, iPhone 14, iPhone 13, and iPhone 12. It's unwieldy and I'd suggest ditching the 14 and 13 and just giving the iPhone 12 the iPhone SE name, but that's just me.

Whatever Apple does, it needs an iPhone whose price begins with a 4. Whatever it calls it might be unimportant, but I do know this — it better not have a Home button for much longer.

Just hours after suggesting Apple's rumored iPhone SE 4 may not in fact adopt the design of the iPhone 14, the same top insider and analyst has now poured more cold water on the budget device, suggesting we may not get to see it for at least another two years. 

In a tweet Friday, Ming-Chi Kuo stated "I think SE 4 is not currently part of Apple's new product planning for 2024/2025." This follows a revelation earlier this week that his previous predictions of an iPhone SE 4 derived from the iPhone 14's design were not accurate. 

Kuo had previously claimed that Apple was working on a 6.1-inch iPhone SE 4 that would look largely similar to the iPhone 14, with a notch, no Home Button or Touch ID, and likely some less beefy internals to keep costs down. Turns out that device was actually an engineering prototype for Apple's own 5G modem it's working on, and won't be released to the public. Now it seems the iPhone SE 4 might never see the light of day. 

iPhone SE 4 no more

Kuo says that the iPhone SE 4 "is not currently part of Apple's new product planning" for either 2024 or 2025. We still have eight months of 2023 left, which means it could be well over two-and-a-half years before Apple's budget iPhone next gets an upgrade. 

The iPhone SE 2022 was not a big update on the 2020 version, which is itself an iPhone 8 with upgraded internals. This leaves us with the prospect of the iPhone SE becoming a very aged and dated device by 2024/25, and seems to indicate that Apple might simply have thrown the towel in all together on the iPhone SE line. 

The iPhone SE is tremendously popular with some users thanks to its relatively low price point when compared with Apple's other best iPhones. Despite being cheaper it offers capable internals and is also a perfect option for those who still want the older Touch ID and Home Button design configuration. For those customers and those anticipating an updated iPhone SE 4, it looks like the news is anything but good. 

A new report into the ever-changing fortunes of the iPhone SE 4 claims the future budget smartphone from Apple is not, in fact, a 6.1-inch device based on the design of the iPhone 14, which was posited as the most likely design recently because the iPhone SE 4 would not in fact be a resurrected iPhone XR.

Confused? Us too. Let me explain... 

Top analyst and insider Ming-Chi Kuo has today admitted that his February leak about the iPhone SE 4 may have been a bit wide of the mark. "I previously predicted that the iPhone SE 4 would be a derivative model of the iPhone 14," he tweeted Thursday. "However, my latest research indicates that this derivative model will likely be an engineering prototype for Apple in-house 5G baseband chip technology and mass production validation, and there are no plans for mass production and sales." 

iPhone SE 4, what now?

So, according to Kuo, previous reports that the next budget iPhone will be a 6.1-inch iPhone based on the current iPhone 14 design are no longer the case. This leaves us asking what is in store for the future. 

Kuo said in February that Apple had restarted its iPhone SE 4 project. However, the internal prototype he's referring to here has "no plans for mass production and sales." This could either mean that Apple is planning to release an iPhone SE 4 with a different design or that the iPhone SE 4 is once again off the table, again. 

Earlier last year, insider Jon Prosser revealed that he thought the next iPhone SE would be a revival of Apple's iPhone XR, which would still be a major upgrade on the current iPhone SE, with a notch, Face ID, and better internals as well as a new camera. 

In the meantime, Apple will definitely unveil its new iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro at a September Apple event later this year. 

Apple has reportedly decided to revisit its iPhone SE 4 plans, with the device now thought to be very similar to the current iPhone 14.

Writing in a series of tweets, well-respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that Apple is once again developing the new iPhone SE 4 and it has some big upgrades over the models that have carried the name so far.

At the very top of the list is the move away from LCD display technology and towards OLED, a first for the iPhone SE line. Alongside the new display, Apple is also thought to be ready to finally use its own in-house 5G modem, removing the need to use Qualcomm as is normally the case.

An iPhone 14 Lite?

While Kuo didn't say when the new iPhone SE would be announced, it's already shaping up to be the best iPhone for a whole ton of people, especially those looking to get a modern design without spending high-end iPhone levels of money.

The current iPhone SE has a pedestrian 4.7-inch LCD display with thick bezels and a Home button, two things that immediately make it appear dated. But the move to an iPhone 14-like design would be a huge win for many, although some will surely lament the loss of the Home button for good.

Apple has been working to try and remove the need for Qualcomm's modems for a number of years but Kuo himself had previously claimed that the project had hit a roadblock. Jeff Pu had made similar claims, saying that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 will continue to use Qualcomm's chip.

As for the iPhone SE. it remains to be seen how Apple would market such a phone. It could well retain the iPhone SE moniker, but given the refreshed look and removal of the Home button it could choose something else entirely. It also isn't yet clear whether we can expect Face ID to be included, although Kuo's claims that the phone will be "a minor modification of the 6.1-inch iPhone 14" may suggest that it will.

I remember watching the iPhone 14 event. After a year of enjoying the iPhone 13 mini more than any other iPhone I've ever owned — and I go back to the iPhone 3GS — I was excited about what the iPhone 14 mini would bring. 

However, I was heartbroken to find that the company had killed off the iPhone mini in favor of the enormous iPhone 14 Plus. With the news, Apple killed off a small but growing and passionate community. Now, it appears that the same fate may befall the iPhone SE.

Apple may delay or cancel the iPhone SE 4

According to a report from supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is considering delaying or completely canceling the launch of the iPhone SE 4, which has been rumored to be launching in 2024.

Kuo said that "my latest survey indicates that Apple will likely cancel or postpone the mass production plan for the 2024 iPhone SE 4." The analyst said that the company is likely making the move due to "the consistently lower-than-expected shipments of mid-to-low-end iPhones (e.g., SE 3, 13 mini, and iPhone 14 Plus)."

The iPhone SE 4 was expected to adopt the design of the iPhone XR with its curved housing, full-screen display, and larger 6.1-inch screen size.

Killing the iPhone SE kills another community

If Apple kills off the iPhone SE, it will kill off two communities in one shot: those who want a cheap iPhone and those who want a small iPhone.

The iPhone SE has been an affordable option for people who did not want to spend a lot of money on a new phone but still wanted a device with a modern operating system and a good camera. The iPhone SE was particularly popular among people who did not want or need the features and capabilities of a more expensive iPhone, such as a more advanced camera system, the latest features, or the most modern design.

Additionally, the SE was popular among users who preferred a smaller phone with a more compact design, and its discontinuation means that these users will have to look elsewhere for a device that meets their needs. If iPhone mini owners were hoping for the iPhone SE to adopt its smaller design, it appears that dream may be dead.

If the iPhone SE is no longer an option, consumers who want an affordable iPhone will have no choice but to purchase a used, older model. Those looking for a small iPhone will be forced to do the same but be even more limited to a used iPhone mini or iPhone SE.

I really hope that Apple doesn't kill the iPhone SE. Without it, the cheapest and "smallest" iPhone would, if we're going off of the current lineup, start at a price of $799 and a screen size of 6.1 inches. That's a steep price for those looking to enter into the Apple ecosystem.

According to a prolific insider, Apple is likely to cancel or postpone the iPhone SE 4 overhaul reportedly tipped for 2024. 

Ming-Chi Kuo stated Wednesday "my latest survey indicates that Apple will likely cancel or postpone the mass production plan for the 2024 iPhone SE 4." 

Kuo says that this is likely due to "the consistently lower-than-expected shipments of mid-to-low-end iPhones (e.g., SE 3, 13 mini, and iPhone 14 Plus)."

Cost-cutting

Kuo also says that Apple is likely concerned that the new full-screen design of the iPhone SE 4 will lead to higher costs and selling prices for what has historical been Apple's 'budget' offering, with Apple needing to reconsider the product positioning and return on investment. Kuo further notes that reducing unnecessary new product development expenses will help Apple navigate the 2023 recession.

This is hugely disappointing news considering the iPhone SE 4 was expected to be a major overhaul on the previous model, adopting the full-screen notch design of the iPhone XR. 

That would have seen an end to the ageing chin and forehead design as well as the death of the Home Button on Apple's iPhones for good. 

We can only hope that Apple is just indeed delaying this rather than canning it altogether, although Kuo doesn't sound optimistic. 

Kuo's survey is also interesting in that it indicates sales of the iPhone SE 3, unveiled earlier this year, may also have been underwhelming. As the cost of living crisis bites, you might have expected customers to turn to cheaper iPhone upgrade options.

Kuo Ming-Chi is an extremely reliable insider with a long track record of accurately revealing Apple's upcoming plans. 

As such, the news all-but confirms the iPhone SE 4 was slated for 2024, which means we aren't likely to see an upgrade in 2023. Instead, next year should herald the iPhone 15, which could adopt USB-C to fall in line with upcoming new EU regulations.

The next iPhone SE was rumored to get a 6.1-inch screen, but Apple has reportedly not yet decided whether it wants to go that far. According to a new report, Apple might instead choose to go with a 5.7-inch screen instead,

We're told that that isn't all that Apple hasn't yet made its mind up about.

Guessing game

Display analyst Ross Young, an oft-reliable source about these things, is the one doing the telling this time around. In a tweet shared with his Super Followers and seen by 9to5Mac, Young says that Apple is yet to finalize its display plans for the next iPhone SE.

Young notes that Apple is considering using a 6.1-inch OLED display from two specific suppliers. But there's also the prospect of going with a 5.7-inch to 6.1-inch LCD from two suppliers.

Whichever option Apple chooses, it'll be an upgrade from the current iPhone SE's tiny 4.7-inch screen. Rumors previously had Apple revamping the model to look more like the iPhone XR, removing the Home button. That could still happen here, allowing Apple to put a larger screen into the device without stretching its proportions too much.

Using an OLED screen would undoubtedly allow for a better experience thanks to increased contrast and colors, but it would also presumably cost more for Apple to make. The iPhone XR famously used an LCD panel and was derided and lauded for it depending on whether or not people could see the slightly larger bezels and lower pixel count.

Apple's iPhone SE remains the best iPhone for people that want to keep the Home button, but that now looks likely to go away with this iteration. Hopefully, Apple will help to ease that disappointment with a suitably low starting price.

Apple is expected to refresh the iPhone SE at some point in 2023, and rumors have already pointed to that looking like an iPhone XR of yesteryear. Now, another report backs that up and provides renders to go with it.

While this new report does suggest that the next iPhone SE will look like an iPhone XR, it's, unfortunately, light on technical details. That means we don't know much beyond how this thing will likely look.

iPhone XR returns

In terms of those designs, though, nobody will be able to avoid the comparison with the iPhone XR that was so popular as a budget option a few years ago.

This latest report comes via Jon Prosser and Front Page Tech, citing unnamed sources. As mentioned, those sources don't appear to have shared too much information about what the insides of this thing will offer, but we do know that it will use the iPhone XR form factor. How closely will it follow that? We don't know for sure just yet. Prosser does seem confident in his sources this time, though — more sure than the last time he made similar iPhone SE claims earlier in the year.

There are question marks, of course. The first is that the iPhone XR shipped with a 6.1-inch display, and the iPhone SE currently has just a 4.7-inch one. Apple could obviously increase the screen size, and removing the Home button would help there, but it's yet to be confirmed.

The removal of the Home button doesn't necessarily mean that we'll see Face ID added, though. Apple could choose to put the Home button's Touch ID sensor into the Side button, much as it chose to do with the iPad Air and the new iPad 10th generation. Even if it goes that route, a notch would likely be used to house the front-facing camera and proximity sensor.

Whatever happens, the iPhone SE has always been the best iPhone for people looking to spend as little as possible. That hasn't always made it a great buy, however, but whether that remains the case will depend on what Apple puts inside this thing and whether Face ID is included. As always, we'll need to wait and see.

Another report says that Apple's next iPhone SE will be a major design upgrade based on Apple's iPhone XR from 2018. 

The report comes by way of DSCC's Ross Young, who told MacRumors he expects the fourth-generation iPhone SE to come with a 6.1-inch LCD display and a notch. It comes following a prediction from Young last year stating Apple had a new iPhone SE with a 5.7-6.1-inch display in the works.

Ross Young has previously tipped that Apple will release the new device in 2023, but more recently, that the model had been pushed to 2024.  

iPhone XE?

While Young has shifted his prediction on the new iPhone SE a couple of times now, the news follows a report from Jon Prosser earlier this year who claimed that Apple would indeed debut a new iPhone SE in the style of the 2018 iPhone XR. 

The upgrade would mean an end to the dated forehead and chin design and the death of the Home Button on the iPhone in favor of the notch and all touch-screen design that made the iPhone X famous. 

Expected upgrades could also include the A15 Bionic Chip, but it could signal the end of Touch ID on the iPhone. The iPhone SE remains the best iPhone for those on a budget thanks to its low price tag, however, the design hasn't changed for several years and now sticks out as a rather dated part of the iPhone lineup. 

As noted there seems to be some confusion as to the timeline for the new iPhone SE, with Ross Young tipping both next year and 2024 as possible release dates. Given how limited the most recent iPhone SE upgrade was, we can only hope the new devices turns up sooner rather than later. 

Apple recently released its all-new iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, the latter featuring a new Dynamic Island, Always-on Display, and A16 processor. 

While all eyes are on the iPhone 14 and Apple's September Far Out event, a new leak says that one of Apple's most popular iPhones could receive a major upgrade next year. 

According to Jon Prosser, appearing on the Geared Up podcast, the new iPhone SE (fourth-generation) will just be Apple's iPhone XR, which was first debuted by the company in 2018.

This would represent a major redesign on the current iPhone SE, which is based on the old iPhone 8 featuring the old-style design and a Touch ID button. 

iPhone XE?

This rumored upgrade makes a lot of sense. While the iPhone SE is one of Apple's best iPhones thanks to its very affordable price tag, its design is really starting to show its age. Until the iPhone XR was discontinued by Apple it stacked up very well to the iPhone SE and the change would offer a few major advantages over the current model. 

A new iPhone SE based on the old XR would offer similar power if we are to assume that its old A12 bionic got an upgrade to a beefier model like the current A15 Bionic chip. It would also likely come with 5G, an upgrade added to the iPhone SE this year. 

The biggest change, of course, would be the design, with the iPhone XR finally bringing to an end Touch ID on the iPhone in favor of Face ID. A new report says that Apple is not struggling to supply the iPhone SE despite COVID lockdowns that have closed some of its factories, but is starting to see problems with its MacBook supply.

As reported today by Ming-Chi Kuo, the delivery status of the new iPhone SE, Apple's best iPhone for those on a budget, remains "in stock" across China despite lockdowns that have closed some Apple factories including those of Pegatron, the sole suppliers of the new iPhone SE. This is because of "lackluster demand", according to Kuo, suggesting the new iPhone SE may not have been the hit Apple was hoping for.

Conversely, Kuo says Apple is starting to struggle with the supply of its high-end MacBook Pro (2021), the delivery time of which is slipping by 3-5 weeks after the lockdown in China.

Kuo further reported that Apple had cut its orders for its third-generation AirPods for both Q3 and Q2 by more than 30%. He says this is due to Apple's failed product segmentation strategy, which has seen the continued popularity of the previous generation of AirPods eat into sales of the newer version. As a result, Kuo predicted that Apple may discontinue its current AirPods Pro when it releases the new model to avoid the same thing happening again.

The aluminum comes from the company ELYSIS, which has announced that it has produced the first commercial-purity primary aluminum at an industrial scale to be used in Apple products. Apple says that more than $500 million of the company's 2019 GReen Bond proceeds have gone to clean energy projects. It also says that it has helped to support its Supplier Clean Energy Program, and that more than 175 manufacturing partners in 24 countries have committed to using 100% renewable energy for Apple production.

While it might not be the phone for you, it's the phone you'd buy a parent, or an elderly relative, or a "my first iPhone" for a young teenager. 

It's the only iPhone that still offers the classic chin and forehead design, and the only iPhone that offers a physical Home Button with Touch ID, which makes it a much more accessible phone for those who aren't so tech literate. 

So how does the iPhone SE stack in 2023? With the iPhone 15 just around the corner, the answer is still quite well. Pushing the boat out for a good deal could get you a much better phone for slightly more money, but for those who want consistency and simplicity, the iPhone SE remains the number one contender. 

iPhone SE (2022): Price and availability

The iPhone SE is a year into its lifespan, and there are a couple of excellent older iPhones to choose from that mean the choice isn't quite as clear cut as it used to be. Apple sells the iPhone SE for $429, but stretching will get you a 64GB iPhone 12 for $599. That's a lot more money in fairness, but it's worth considering now that there are always great iPhone deals poking around, especially through carriers. 

The iPhone SE offers three storage capacities in a diminutive form factor. If you like a small iPhone that is easy to carry and hold, the iPhone SE is definitely for you, although the iPhone 13 mini is a potent, if more expensive alternative. 

The A15 Bionic chip is a year old now, but it's the same chip Apple ships in the iPhone 14, so there's no danger of it slowing down or losing software updates anytime soon. 

The iPhone SE has a competent camera system, but it's definitely not the iPhone to buy if photography is a top priority, with the iPhone 12, 13, and 14 range offering more comprehensive camera configurations. With its LCD display measuring 4.7-inches, battery life isn't going to be a worry, especially when those eyeing up this device likely aren't into heavy, resource-intensive tasks like gaming and photo editing. 

In all honesty the iPhone SE is starting to get a bit long in the tooth, especially given that older design language. I think the iPhone SE is due a big refresh, but rumor has it there might not be one on the horizon in the near future. If you're considering an iPhone in the summer of 2023, I'd recommend waiting for the iPhone 15 and seeing where the chips fall in terms of pricing of the older models.

The iPhone SE (2022) is available directly from Apple in-store or online, as well as most major retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Target, and more, including your preferred cellular provider. However, if you are looking to purchase the iPhone SE unlocked, your best bet is direct from Apple, as most other retailers sell it carrier-locked.

There are three colors for the iPhone SE: Midnight, Starlight, and PRODUCT(RED). You have three capacities to choose from as well: 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB, and the price is $429, $479, and $579, respectively.

iPhone SE (2022): Hardware and design

The third-generation iPhone SE still retains the same exact design as the previous iteration. This means it still has the old iPhone 8 body: a 4.7-inch Retina HD LCD display, glass front and back with aerospace-grade aluminum, a single-lens 12MP camera system in the back, and a 7MP FaceTime HD camera in the front. The Home button is still there so you have Touch ID for biometrics, instead of Face ID. The dimensions are exactly the same as the phone before it, which means that iPhone SE 2 cases will still fit the new iPhone SE, as well as any older iPhone 8 or even iPhone 7 cases. If you opt to not use a case, be aware that due to the glass material used on the back, it's glossy and thus, a fingerprint magnet.

While the iPhone SE looks the same on the surface, it's what's inside that really matters. Apple has packed the powerful A15 Bionic chip, which is what is currently in the best iPhone, the iPhone 14 series, into the iPhone SE. This means that although the iPhone SE is pretty much the budget iPhone, it is still blazing fast and is just as zippy as its more powerful siblings. The A15 is also what makes the new camera improvements possible, which are Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 4, and Photographic Styles, but we'll get to that in a bit.

Another big addition to the iPhone SE is 5G connectivity, bringing it up to speed with modern iPhones and even competing Android devices. However, it's important to note that while the iPhone SE does have 5G, it only supports the broader, but slightly slower, sub-6 5G connection instead of the narrower but faster mmWave 5G. While this may seem like a negative, it's actually not — mmWave 5G is already quite hard to come by, and it's very limited in availability compared to sub-6. For most people, sub-6 5G is more easily accessible and plenty fast, so it's not necessarily a bad thing that the iPhone SE only supports this 5G spectrum. For the average user, which the iPhone SE is aimed for, sub-6 5G will work just fine.

iPhone SE (2022): Software and performance

When you purchase the iPhone SE, it comes equipped with iOS 15. And thanks to the A15 Bionic that powers it, the same chip in the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 lineup, the iPhone SE runs iOS 16 nicely. With A15, Apple packed in a 6-core CPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores, a four-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine. Compared with the previous iteration A13 that had the same specs except for an 8-core Neural Engine, the A15 in the iPhone SE gives it a noticeable boost in performance.

For the average person, who again is what the iPhone SE is targeting, they won't notice too much in everyday use. They will just see that the iPhone SE is speedy with performing things like email, checking social media, listening to music, and watching videos. I found the iPhone SE to be most comparable to my iPhone 13 Pro (minus the display) that I've been using since launch day, so the A15 is definitely plenty for most folks. This also means that iOS 17 will be well-supported come September. 

The real test for the A15 and performance lies in playing mobile games on the device. I honestly don't do a lot of gaming on my iPhone anymore; all I've done recently is play Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel. But I did try that game out on the iPhone SE, and it was buttery smooth with no hiccups or performance issues during play. And honestly, since there's no notch on the iPhone SE, the graphics aren't awkwardly cut off on the edges.

Honestly, I think those who are serious about mobile gaming should consider an iPhone 13 Pro or iPhone 13 Pro Max instead, just because of the dynamic 120Hz refresh rate on the OLED display. But for the average user who plays a simple game or wants to try out something more intense, the iPhone SE is fine. Definitely not the best, but for most people, it's good enough.

The main area that the A15 affects is the camera. Because of the bump in power, the iPhone SE is now capable of Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 4, and Photographic Styles, despite the fact that there were no major changes in the camera hardware itself. All of the improvements for the iPhone SE camera are done computationally through software, which is possible because of the A15 chip. While it's not perfect (it's still software, after all), it's definitely a step up from the last generation.

iPhone SE (2022): Battery

I don't have the previous iPhone SE (2020) to compare with, but the battery life on the iPhone SE (2022) is only okay. Coming from an iPhone 13 Pro, the iPhone SE has a tiny battery due to the slimmer and more lightweight form factor. However, the new iPhone SE does have a bigger battery than the previous generation at 2018mAh versus the paltry 1821mAh from the 2020 model.

Apple claims about 15 hours of video playback on a full charge, so while it should theoretically get you through most of a day, it really depends on your usage level. And having 5G on does drain the battery faster, so if you're really pushing the iPhone SE through its paces, then you definitely might need to charge it up at some point mid-day. Honestly, this phone just doesn't even come close compared to my daily driver, the iPhone 13 Pro. But I do miss that battery percentage in the status bar (c'mon Apple, bring it back!).

Since the iPhone SE is using a recycled design, it didn't add MagSafe like people were hoping for. Instead, the iPhone SE still uses a Lightning port, but like its predecessor, it can Fast Charge (50% charge in 30 minutes) as long as you use a 20W or higher adapter. As far as wireless charging goes, the iPhone SE is Qi-charging compatible with a maximum output of 7.5W.

If you're looking for the best iPhone for battery life, then the iPhone SE isn't what you're looking for. But it has a lot of other things going for it, such as the most comfortable form factor to use single-handedly, the only iPhone still with a Home button for those who don't want change, 5G connectivity, A15 Bionic, and a pretty decent camera, all things considered.

iPhone SE (2022): Cameras

Since I'm coming from an iPhone 13 Pro, the camera on the iPhone SE is definitely a downgrade for me, but that's because I have been using a triple-lens camera system for the past six months. However, for the average person, the iPhone SE still takes some pretty darn good photos, at least in well-lit environments. Since it does not have LiDAR, it is not able to do Night mode, unfortunately, and there is no Ultra Wide or Telephoto lens. The iPhone SE (2022) is still using the same camera hardware as the iPhone 8, which means just a Wide angle lens with a 12MP, six-element lens, and sapphire glass cover. It even has the same ƒ/1.8 aperture. All improvements to the camera in the iPhone SE are done on the software side.

I took the iPhone SE for a test outside at the park. For the most part, the photos I took with the iPhone SE were pretty comparable to the standard iPhone 13, and even the iPhone 13 Pro. Since the A15 Bionic allows the iPhone SE to now do Deep Fusion, textures have a ton of detail in them. Smart HDR 4 also provides vibrant but true-to-life colors in photos without washing them out. I was able to get bright blue skies in my pictures without the sky being a faded blue. And while Photographic Styles is now possible on the iPhone SE, I personally do not use the other styles besides Normal, as I prefer to do my own editing later. But it's still great to have the option for that if someone wants to use it without having to cough up for a flagship iPhone.

Now, if you want to take photos with the iPhone SE in low-light situations, then you might struggle a bit. While it's possible, images will have quite a bit of grainy noise, and you do lose detail. For example, I took this photo of Space Mountain at Disneyland at night, and you can see that the iPhone SE image appears duller, with blurrier texture in the trees. The colors are also less vibrant as well. The same can be said for the Sleeping Beauty Castle comparison below.

If you've been wanting to use your iPhone to take photos at night in dimly lit environments, then the iPhone SE is not the iPhone to get — for this particular area, you should get an iPhone that is capable of Night mode instead, which includes the iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and iPhone 13 series, all of which are still sold by Apple. However, for the average person who doesn't care for all the bells and whistles, who are Apple's target demographic with the iPhone SE, the photos are good enough. After all, if one is looking to take amazing low-light photos, they won't even consider the iPhone SE.

Now, the front-facing camera on the iPhone SE (2022) is still the same measly 7MP FaceTime HD camera from the iPhone 8. When testing out some selfies outside, the iPhone SE is pretty good with the color of my skin tone, but it washes out the sky so that it is white instead of a vibrant blue. But if you are just planning to use the front camera for FaceTime calls or simple selfies, then it should be fine. It can even do Portrait mode selfies with Portrait Lighting if you want to get fancy. Just expect slightly less detailed images with the FaceTime HD camera versus the TrueDepth camera on the iPhone 11, 12, and 13.

iPhone SE (2022): Competition

The biggest competition for the iPhone SE (2022) is Apple's own iPhone 13, specifically the iPhone 13 mini. One reason people may consider the iPhone SE is because of the size, and the iPhone 13 mini is the smallest offering from Apple at the moment, though it's a little more expensive, as it starts at $599. It also doesn't have the Home button so it has Face ID for biometrics and a larger display with 5.4-inches instead of 4.7-inches. The iPhone 13 mini also has the Super Retina XDR OLED display instead of LCD, the Ultra-Wide camera, Night mode capabilities, and the higher megapixel TrueDepth front camera.

Another competitor for the iPhone SE (2022) is the Google Pixel 5a. It's a budget Pixel phone that's about the same price range as the iPhone SE with the $449 cost, but it has an even more advanced dual-camera system with an Ultra Wide and Wide angle lens, 8MP front camera, as well as a larger display. It has a significantly larger battery, starts at 128GB with 6GB of RAM (the iPhone SE only has 4GB), and it runs the latest version of Android 12. If you want more bang for your buck and don't mind being on the Android side of things, then the Pixel 5a is a good choice. But keep in mind that you only have one storage capacity size, a slightly slower processor (A15 is faster than Snapdragon 765G), and no wireless charging capabilities.

iPhone SE (2022): Should you buy it?

You want modern internals for less

The iPhone SE (2022) is Apple's most affordable iPhone, making it the perfect entry point into iOS, especially for someone new. If you're coming from an older iPhone, then the iPhone SE is an affordable upgrade that gets you most modern features for a fraction of the cost of the flagship iPhone 13 series. You get the A15 Bionic, which is currently in the iPhone 13 series, and powers software-side camera improvements like Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 4, and Photographic Styles.

You still want an iPhone with a Home button

Some people still like Touch ID over Face ID, and that's okay. The iPhone SE (2022) is currently the only iPhone that Apple sells that retains the Home button. If you prefer using it, then this is the only iPhone you can buy that still has it. Who knows if Apple will continue to sell an iPhone SE with a Home button several years from now.

You want a small and lightweight phone with 5G

The iPhone SE (2022) is probably the best iPhone to use one-handed due to the compact and lightweight form factor. If that's what you've been wanting, then this is the best iPhone for the job. Plus, it now has sub-6 5G support, so you get the fastest data connection possible with your carrier.

You want Face ID and a larger display

As much as some people love the Home button, the iPhone SE (2022) has a very dated design. Plus, I often find Face ID to be faster and more convenient to use overall. Another benefit of having Face ID is the fact that your display is larger, because there are no more bezels for a Home button, giving you an edge-to-edge display.

You want the best cameras on an iPhone

If you primarily use your iPhone for photos, the iPhone SE (2022) is lacking, despite the improvements Apple made. You only get a single 12MP Wide lens here, and it's basically the same hardware from the iPhone 8. While A15 gets you Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 4, and Photographic Styles, you won't have LiDAR for Night mode, nor will you get an Ultra Wide and Telephoto lens. If you just want the Ultra Wide, it's best to get the iPhone 13, and if you need a Telephoto for optical zoom, then go for the iPhone 13 Pro. And don't forget about the measly 7MP FaceTime HD selfie camera — even the iPhone 11 has a 12MP TrueDepth camera, which would give your images more detail.

You want an OLED display

Since the iPhone SE (2022) is recycling the iPhone 8 chassis, you still have a 4.7-inch Retina HD LCD display, versus an OLED display that started arriving with the iPhone 12. For the average user, an LCD display is fine. Most people won't know or see the difference between an LCD and OLED display, to be fair. But if you want the absolute best and most vibrant color quality with the inkiest blacks, then you have to go OLED. And the Pro series devices are the only ones with the dynamic 120Hz ProMotion display — if you're using an iPhone SE next to an iPhone 13 Pro, yes, you can tell the difference if you have a sharp eye.

The iPhone SE (2022) is an iPhone that isn't for the techies or power users like you and me. It's an affordable iPhone for someone who is looking to purchase their first iPhone, or someone who is upgrading from an older model and wants something that just works. It's for people who want a small form factor that's still comfortable to use single-handedly, while also getting a modern processor and connectivity with 5G.
