The Apple Watch Ultra just became a little bit more tempting for the scuba diving community thanks to the new Oceanic+ app from Huish Outdoors. The app unlocks the scuba diving potential of the Apple Watch Ultra, turning it into a personal dive computer on your wrist and making use of its depth gauge and water temperature sensors.

Yes, I know what you’re thinking - finally! If you’re an Apple Watch Ultra owner I bet every day you’ve been looking at the clunky yet feature-packed hunk of expensive metal on your wrist, with its virtually unscratchable sapphire crystal face, and thinking, ‘Gee, when will I be able to go scuba diving with this thing, Apple?’

Calling all Mac fans

This article originally appeared in Mac|Life magazine. You bought it simply because it was the biggest, baddest, most expensive Apple Watch you could get, and you just wanted to show off. That’s OK, I’m sure that’s why everybody else got one, too.

But really this new app is just further evidence for why an Apple Watch Ultra would be completely wasted on me. I don’t go scuba diving, I don’t climb mountains or trek across deserts. I’m not an endurance athlete, outdoor adventurer or an ocean explorer. In fact, I’m still making do with a Series 5 Apple Watch from a few years ago that I haven’t felt the need to upgrade.

The 6th generation iPod Nano

Thinking about the Apple Watch and how far it’s come from its humble beginnings reminded me about the time when people used to sell watch straps that fitted the old 2010 iPod Nano (6th generation) — the one that looked a bit like an Apple Watch screen, but was very square in comparison. The 2010 iPod Nano could play music through some connected headphones, and had 18 different watch faces. Once you attached a watch strap to it, it became the de facto first ever Apple Watch, long before Apple actually released a watch.

I remember seeing an iPod Nano on a wrist strap for the first time and thinking it looked pretty cool, whereas now it looks like a bit of a joke. Who would have thought that 13 years on from the iPod Nano we’d have, basically, a cool-looking Apple computer on our wrists that can be used 40 metres below sea level as a diving computer. It makes me wonder where the Apple Watch is going to take us in the next 13 years, and will it make today’s Apple Watches look as out of date as a 6th gen iPod Nano attached to a watch strap?

Who knows, but to those about to go scuba diving with their Apple Watch Ultra, I salute you. I just won’t be joining you.

The iPod can in fact run both, but the Apple Pencil test was the most surprising. Mitchell was able to plug in and charge an Apple Pencil using the iPod Nano. As you can imagine, it took quite a bit of juice, charging the Pencil from 80-100% drained the Nano's battery from full to just 25%. The Apple Pencil, of course, doesn't actually work with the iPod Nano's tiny touch screen, however, Mitchell did show off a $13 stylus that did.

Recently, an Apple patent indicated the company has considering ways to include the Apple Pencil with its MacBook lineup, from our recent report:

A patent filed by Apple earlier this week that revealed a new MacBook design with an Apple Pencil housed in place of its Touch Bar has been brought to life in a stunning new concept.Sarang Sheth through Yanko Design has created a concept of a MacBook with an Apple Pencil housed where the Touch Bar used to be, as based on a patent filing from Apple made public this week.

Macbook Apple Pencil (Image credit: Sarang Sheth)

I do, and I owned the very first model. It was cool. But you know what would make it cooler? A screen you can touch and a look that's very much Apple in 2021. This latest concept by Tech Blood proves it, too.

Shared via a YouTube video and a handful of still renders, this new concept imagines what would happen if you created a modern iPod nano. The shape immediately reminds me of the rumored AirTags and the display is, of course, touch-friendly.

And just look at it!

This new iPod 2021 Concept showcases how Apple could bring back the iPods, with new features! This Circular iPod is easy to hold and carry. It comes with its own dedicated OS, which makes the User Interface easy to understand and use. Everyone loved having an iPod, so here's a New iPod with all the latest Technology!

The concept shows an iOS-like interface that is actually its own bespoke operating system. But Podcasts, Music, and even Siri are all present and correct. I think it's fair to say I'd be all over one of these things if Apple let me buy one!

Until then, I'd suggest bagging yourself an iPod touch and slapping it into one of these waterproof cases for iPod touch 7 to make sure it stays in tip-top condition.

The same week that Apple announced that the iPod nano and Shuffle would no longer be available for sale, I coincidentally came across my old nano at the bottom of a box. Before the announcement, I pulled my postage stamp sized nano out and took a small trip down memory lane. The iPod was my first step into tech gadget waters, which would eventually lead me to the career I have today.

I remember my first iPod

I was late to the digital music game. I thought the idea of a small but expensive device that only played digital versions of music was silly and inconvenient. I had my large collection of vinyl for listening to music in the house, and a Discman or Walkman for listening to CDs and tapes. Sure, I had to tote a book of heavy CDs or a lunchbox sized case of tapes everywhere I went, but I actually thought that was more convenient than having to load all my music onto a computer before transferring that music to a portable music device. Silly, right?

I finally took the plunge sometime in 2005 when I bought an iPod mini. I think I found it on sale. Even though I turned my nose up at the idea of MP3 players, I was secretly excited about this strange device. How does it work? How do I turn my vinyl, tapes, and CDs into something I can listen to on this tiny little box? I was excited to discover everything this new-fangled gadget could do.

It didn't take long for me to fall completely in love with the iPod. Less than a year later, I had moved on to the iPod nano, of which I bought two more. It became my favorite music listening device until I eventually upgraded to the iPhone.

The iPod nano will always be loved

Some people have a dedicated nano just for listening to podcasts while others use them exclusively for listening to audio books. If you search #iPodnano on Twitter and go back before Apple announced the end of this era (July 26, 2017), you'll see that lots of people still use it, even if it's somewhat ironically.

The nano is a memory. It's something most of us remember getting for the first time. I'll bet you can still remember the color of your first iPod nano and who got it for you. We've grown up and moved on to better technology and easier ways to sync our media, but we still love the nano the way we love the first stuffed animal we got as a child, or the first book we remember reading by ourselves (Mine was Sunshine Porcupine by Diane Gess)

That's why it truly seems like Apple is closing a chapter on its technological past. Sure, the iPhone is more convenient (you don't have to bring more than one device with you on the go), but the iPod nano is still a viable device for storing and listening to music, audio books, and podcasts.

It's time to move on

I admit I haven't used any of my iPods, not my nano, or my Shuffle, or my touch for a very, very long time. Ever since I got my first iPhone, it's been my main source for listening to music. I think I'm an example of why Apple made the decision to put that horse to pasture.

While the nano and Shuffle are probably still being used by a lot of people, it's not the most convenient way to take advantage of everything Apple has to offer. You can't download songs from Apple Music (I tried, you can't). You have to connect it to your computer and sync it with iTunes. You can't pair it with Bluetooth speakers or headphones. There is no way to get anything iCloud-related on it. In comparison, the iPod touch, which is essentially an iPhone without cellular capability, does everything the iPod nano did, but a lot easier, and with a lot more features.

It was the right move on Apple's part. We don't need to hold on to the past so tightly, especially when it comes to technology, which progresses so fast we can barely keep up with it. Instead, Apple is now free to dedicate more time, resources, and research to getting on with the future.

Maybe we'll get that Apple Car someday yet — or at least a new version of the Apple TV.

Do you remember your first iPod nano or Shuffle? What version and color was it?

Though Rene and I had speculated about Apple revamping the iPod nano and shuffle line to include some sort of Bluetooth authentication for Apple Music, it looks as though the iPod line won't get access to offline copies of Apple's newest streaming service.

When you try to sync offline Apple Music tracks to a nano or shuffle, you're met with this rather disappointing message: "Apple Music songs cannot be copied to an iPod." You'll have to rely on your purchased music for those devices, instead.

Why did Apple do this?

It's probably a record label requirement: In theory, you could sync an iPod shuffle or nano up with Apple Music tracks, then cancel your Apple Music subscription and continue rocking out to those "copied" tracks forever.

Given the small storage space of both the nano and shuffle, though, I think this is pretty dumb. For one thing, you'd at most be stealing a couple hundred to a couple thousand songs; for another, how hard would it have been to perform an authentication check every time you plug your iPod into your Mac? If iPod has expired Apple Music tracks on it, delete said tracks. If not, keep on rocking.

This makes the least sense for the iPod nano, as the device already has Bluetooth built in. You'd think Apple could include a wireless sync-style option for it like it does for the Apple Watch, but no—the nano is doomed to purchased music only, as well.

At its heart, though, this is probably an issue regarding priority and time. Apple needed to write a software update for both the nano and the shuffle to recognize and use Apple Music; instead, they get a new paint job and that's about it. (The nano is still using the iOS 6 UI, which is kind of horrific when you think about it. Jony, you really let this out of your lab?) I suppose there's a small chance that Apple could take the time to update the device's software in the future to allow for this, but I'm skeptical.

The iPod touch, alone

This leaves the iPod touch as the lone iPod in the line that can take advantage of Apple Music's catalog in both online and offline formats. It gets Apple Music because it can run iOS 8.4; Apple doesn't need to create a major software update for the iPod touch because one already existed.

As a result, if you want your kid, friend, or significant other to have access to Apple Music and a new iPod, the iPod touch is the only really viable option.

The sad truth about iPods

Much as I love the delight of the iPod shuffle line, this is the latest in a long line of moves toward making the iPod obsolete. The Apple Watch is the future for semi-offline small devices you want to listen to while on the go; the nanos and shuffles of the world are the elegant, ancient weapons from a more civilized age of wired headphones and purchased music.

Long may they live on our shelves as reminders for what we used to have.

We've already seen the iPod touch 5 torn down so it's only fair that the iPod Nano 7 get the same treatment. Since the iPod nano is quite bit larger than its predecessor, it makes repairability a little more economical and realistic, but not by much. iFixIt once again did the deed:

With a plastic opening tool in hand, we probed the depths of the Nano's compact design. Good news: the Nano's case can be opened with a standard Phillips #00 screwdriver and a little prying from a plastic opening tool. Unfortunately, the Nano's battery, Lightning connector, button cable, and headphone jack are all soldered to the logic board. To top that off, the battery is also adhered to the back of the assembly, which will make the battery difficult to replace when it fails (as batteries inevitably do).

The good news is that the new iPod nano's casing can be pulled open with only a #00 Phillips screwdriver and a plastic pry tool. The bad news is that a lot of components are soldered straight to the logic board including the Lightning connector, headphone jack, and Home button cable.

Anyone who has ever taken apart an iOS device before knows that the Home button is typically the first thing to give out due to excessive use. It wouldn't make these kinds of repairs cost effective considering the iPod nano is only priced at $149. A shattered screen, however, is definitely replaceable.

When it comes to a batteries, however, since they'resoldered in, it probably won't be economical for most users to replace it themselves. The current cost for AppleCare customers after the first year is $59 plus shipping and tax which probably will remain the same. We aren't yet sure what Apple will charge for a replacement battery in the new iPod nano if you're out of warranty.

Overall, iFixIt gave the 7th gen iPod nano a repairability score of 5 which is at least higher than the new 5th generation iPod touch which only received a score of 3 out of 10. Ouch.

To check out the entire teardown, hit the link below.
Back in July when iMore learned about Apple's plans for a September 12 iPhone event, we learned some new iPods would likely be coming with it, including a new iPod touch and iPod nano. Specifics were scarce, however. Now Mark Gurman from 9to5mac has a few more details:

[We] believe that there will be at least two new/updated iPod lines and possibly a third. All these new lines will come in multiple colors, one of the lines will come in two size capacities, and the other two lines will come in a single storage capacity.

iMore has learned that the new iPod touch is getting the same 4-inch, 16:9 aspect ration screen as the new iPhone. Whether it's the same exact panel as the iPhone 5, or Apple once again goes for a cheaper panel like the non-IPS one they went with in 2010, however, remains to be seen.

While the iPhone 4S last year got the Apple A5 processor and a bump to 64GB, the iPod touch got no processor or storage bump, only a white option. It seems logical that Apple would rev the iPod touch processor this year, but whether or not it goes to 128GB also remains in question. A 128GB iPod touch could let Apple retire the venerable iPod classic line. However, services like iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match have made iOS devices far less storage-constrained than they were in the past.

There have also been rumors about Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi direct device-to-device communications and connectivity. If those have any validity, while the iPhone would no doubt get much of the attention, those features could be even more compelling on the non-cellular iPod lineup.

As for the timeline, it does make sense for Apple to introduce the new iPods at the same event as the new iPhone, like they did last year. That leaves October clear for the iPad mini and whatever else Apple intends to showoff with it. Gurman's information on the iPod nano and iPod shuffle sounds reasonable as well.

Perhaps the biggest wildcard, as M.G. Siegler points out on TechCrunch, is whether or not iTunes 11 is finally good to go.

Whispers have a team from Facebook in Cupertino, actively engaged in the ongoing development. That clearly seems to confirm the end of Ping, but also — hopefully — a completely reworked experience. Be warned: there have been many false-starts here. So it’s not clear if we’ll hear more next week, next month, or alas, next year.

Some answers, at least, are just a week away...

This would include the new iPhone 5, the the new iPod nano and iPod touch, the rumored 7-inch iPad mini, and an updated version of the current 9.7-inch iPad.

The information comes from the same sources that told iMore about the new, smaller Dock connector back in February, and about a mini Dock adapter to fit legacy accessories last month.

We've gone over the reasons why Apple would release an iPad mini and how they could implement it before, but refreshing the iPad 3 so soon after it's March, 2012 launch, especially considering past updates have occurred only yearly schedules, is something equally interesting to consider.

Apparently, Apple believes consistent Dock connectors across the line, and other improvements they're able to make to the new iPad this point, are more important than sticking to yearly release schedules. Apple has previously shown little aversion to extending release schedules, with a 16 month gap between iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, and no substantive iPod touch updates for 23 months and counting. But what about significantly shortening them?

Rumors of early iPad updates also aren't without precedent. Last year Daring Fireball, TechCrunch, and iMore and others heard the iPad 3 was being considered for a fall 2011 launch before ultimately getting scheduled into the "regular" spring 2012 slot.

Furthermore, iLounge reported last week that they'd heard from their own sources that an updated 9.7-inch iPad was in the works, but framed it in the context of a 4th-generation device that would include the new Dock connector, a rear-mounted mic, and address heat issues. They felt it was unlikely, however, due to Apple's typical iPad release schedules.

Yet Apple is firing on all cylinders are the moment, confidently moving OS X updates to the same yearly schedule as iOS updates, and beginning the process of bringing Retina displays to the Mac.

Whether a new, new iPad this fall would be an iPad 4,1 or simply a new iPad 3,x is unclear. Certainly Apple could decide again to hold off on any and all updates until next spring, or could do a more modest iPad 3 update this fall and a proper iPad 4 next spring.

In the meantime, it sure sounds like Apple is planning to run the line when it comes to iOS device updates this September.

Additional resources

The 16:9 iPhone: How Apple could handle the longer screen on the next iPhone

Everything you need to know about the iPhone 5

iPhone 5 discussion forum

Solving for 7: How Apple could implement the iPad mini interface

Everything you need to know about the iPad mini

iPad mini forum

If you bought a new iPod nano in 2010, don't worry, Apple has already pushed out an update to bring you all the new features, including big icons and 12 new watch faces -- today! That's right, just plug into iTunes, hit update, and you'll be ready to rock everything from a classic timepiece to Mickey Mouse and... wait for it... ANIMAL!

What's really super sweet is that the watch faces know what color nano you have an match themselves accordingly. So if you have a golden nano, they'll be colored differently than if you have a silver one, for example.

It's great that Apple pays such attention to detail.

Gone is the click-wheel, gone is the camera, gone is the video. What's left is a beautiful, polished square running something that looks like iOS, complete with multitouch, gestures, and little nano apps. How does that compare to an iPod touch or iPhone? Read on after the break for our review.

Hardware

The 2010 iPod nano is cooler and sleeker, and definitely smaller than last year's model -- 46 percent smaller to be exact and 42 percent lighter. That works out to a tiny 1.48 inches (37.5 mm) high, 1.61 inches (40.9 mm) wide, 0.35 inch (8.78 mm) deep with the clip, and a weight of just 0.74 ounce (21.1 grams). That makes it extremely portable.

The nano also picks up the iPod shuffle's clip. The multi touch screen allows you to tap to launch apps or make selections, drag apps around to re-arrange them, put two fingers down and twist to rotate the display, double tap (Zombieland ftw), and press-hold an icon to star/stop jiggly mode, or in the middle of the screen to go back to the main home page.

Apple rates the battery life at 24-hours for music with a fast change time of an hour and half to get to 80% and 3 hours to get to full.

And yes, no more video camera. The iPod touch stole it.

Software

Music is where the iPod nano is at. You can select your music from a multitude of different icons (I can't really call them apps, they just launch different views of the iPod app). Songs, albums, artists, playlists, genres, and composers are all here.

The Genius app will take music you already like and choose other songs which you may find appealing. You use the genius application in iTunes and then just sync over any songs you want.

The FM radio works very well on the iPod nano, just plug in your earphones (they double as the antenna) and let the tuner do the rest. You also have the ability to live pause your music, this way you can listen to a song on the radio and then pause the song and come back to the song just where you left off.

If you like to run with your iPod Nano then the pedometer is perfect. It will track how many steps you have taken, how many calories you have burned, and any when you have reached your target goal. If you use Nike+, it's there and waiting for you as well.

One of my favorite applications is the clock, which looks like a snazzy watch. You can choose to have the black or white watch background, I think the black looks nicer.

Apple continues to lead the pack when it comes to accessibility and he new nano is no different. You can turn on the VoiceOver feature which will then give you a description of what is under your finger.

There's a photo app so you can swipe through any photographs you've synced over, but there's no video player any more. I synced over a few video podcasts just to see what would happen and all I got was the audio. Maybe Apple doesn't think people want to watch video on a 1.5-inch square, or maybe Apple just wants them to buy an iPod touch instead.

Conclusion

The 2010 iPod nano is small and lightweight and offers great battery life. The clip also makes it wearable for athletes, hipsters, and pretty much anyone on the go.

It's easy to use and immediately familiar to anyone coming from an iOS device like iPod touch or iPhone. That said, the "tap and hold center" as home button is not very intuitive and sometimes conflicts with other interface actions. Could they have fit in a real, physical home button, or somehow added the functionality to the sleep/wake button? As it is, it's a klutzy deviation from iOS and not for the better.

It's also an iPod in the more traditional sense, not in the iPod touch sense. You're limited to music, music, music, and a few nano apps (napps?). There's no more video playback, and there's not even a contact book or calculator. (Sure it would have been hard at that size, but if anyone could do it it's Apple).

Taken as a whole, which is how Apple products simply must be taken, the iPod nano (2010) won't appeal to those who can afford a iPhone or a iPod touch but might just be the best nano yet for those who want to bring something lightweight with them on the go.

iPod nano fashion? I was more than excited when Steve Jobs announced the new iPod nano. Not because I am a huge music lover but because of the multitude of different ways that I could use it. This new iPod nano is a tech geek girls fashion dream come true.

Follow along after the break to see just some of the ways I've been accessorizing with the new iPod nano, and how well it's been working out.

iPod nano hair clip

This may be more of a dream than a reality. I found that if you use the iPod nano all alone in your hair it is prone to slipping out. If you are going to put it in your hair it is much more secure if you attach it to a hair elastic. It was already slipping out before I even began to walk around. I think if Apple has added a bit of rubber to the edges of the clip it would be much more secure. Steve why did you let me down!

iPod nano pony tail clip

Wearing the iPod nano in your hair is quite cute but lacks the functionality of being able to actually see the new 1.5-inch screen. If you already have a playlist playing and are comfortable using the headset remote buttons to play, pause, and change, its ok but still not ideal. It was quite secure though. You could even go jogging and have them stay in place.

iPod nano watch

The iPod nano is just screaming to be used as a watch. It is the perfect size and with a multitude of different functions it may be the first in a new smart watch generation. Get real iOS and and App Store onto this bad boy and there'd be no stopping us. For the band I use a tight fitting bracelet which is not too thick. This way the clasp on the iPod Nano is able to fully close. I also really liked attaching the iPod nano to my hair elastic. It was quite secure and comfortable.

iPod nano earring

Yes the new iPod nano are very capable of being used as earrings. It is easy to use some two part epoxy and attach a loop and then a regular fishhook earring holder. It is a bit heavy for an earring (though I have worn heavier). It would also present the same issue of not being able to easily change your application or music. For the picture I just clipped the nano right onto my ear, this was not the most comfortable of ways to wear it, however, nor was it very secure.

iPod nano necklace

This is one of my favourite ways to wear the iPod nano. It makes a beautiful show piece and is very user friendly. It is also very beautiful and when I go around people just think it is another piece of jewelry. Then I turn it on and everyone is left in awe.

And more...?

I am sure that I have just covered the tip of the iceberg with some cool new ways to wear your iPod Nano.
