The process is different depending on what Apple device you're using, but we can help step you through all of your options for canceling an App Store subscription. Frankly, we recommend using these steps to check on your subscriptions regularly, just to make sure you're not paying for subscriptions you've forgotten about.

The steps to cancel subscriptions are different depending on what Apple device you're using. Here's what you need to do to cancel subscriptions from your best iPhone.

1. Launch the Settings app.
2. Tap Tap on your name.
3. Select Subscriptions. You might need to log in to your Apple ID at this point if you haven't logged in recently.

4. Tap the subscription you want to cancel.
5. Select Cancel Subscription.

7. Choose Confirm when prompted to confirm that you want to cancel your subscription.

How to cancel an App Store or News+ subscription on your Mac

You can manage your subscriptions right on your Mac from the Mac App Store.

1. Open the App Store on your Mac.
2. Click on your Profile in the bottom-left corner of the App Store window.
3. Click on Account Information or Account Settings in the upper-right corner of the App Store window.

4. Click on Manage under the Subscriptions section.
5. Click on Edit next to the subscription you want to cancel.

6. Click on Cancel Subscription.
7. Click on Done.

How to cancel an App Store or News+ subscription on Apple TV

Finally, if you plan on canceling subscriptions through your Apple TV, these instructions will help you out.

1. Go to the Settings app on your Apple TV.
2. Select your name.
3. Choose Subscriptions.
4. Press the Subscription you want to cancel. Type the name of the subscription in using the provided search if you need to.
5. Tap Cancel Subscription.
6. Confirm the cancellation.

How to resubscribe to a service you canceled

Decided that you wanna give Apple Arcade or one of the many other subscriptions another go after canceling it? Apple keeps your past subscriptions on record, so you can always re-add them at a later time (if still available).

1. Launch the Settings app.
2. Tap App Store.
3. Tap on your Apple ID.

4. Tap Manage when the pop up window appears.
5. Enter your Apple ID password or fingerprint ID when prompted.
6. Tap Subscriptions.

7. Scroll down to Expired.
8. Tap the Subscription you want to renew.
9. Tap the payment option for which you want to resubscribe.
10. Enter your Apple ID password or fingerprint ID when prompted.

When you resubscribe, you will be charged the payment you agreed to and your subscription will automatically renew until you cancel it again.

What to do if you can't cancel your subscription

If you see a subscription in your Active subscriptions listing, but don't see the button to cancel when you tap on it, it means you've already triggered the cancelation but the subscription period hasn't expired yet. You can confirm this by noting the date below the subscription. It will read, Expires [date]. If you were still paying for the subscription, it would read Renews [date] instead.

If you don't see your subscription listed in the Subscription section at all, it means you have to cancel it directly from the source.

For example, Netflix is a monthly subscription service that will not show up on this list. In order to cancel your Netflix account, you have to go to Netflix's website, log in to your account, and cancel your subscription directly.

If you can't seem to cancel an App Store subscription even after waiting beyond a service's subscription period then you should reach out to the company's customer service for additional assistance.

Apple's news-based subscription service, appropriately dubbed Apple News+ includes premium newspaper content as well as access to hundreds of magazines. If you're a news junkie, then Apple News+ is about to become one of the best iPhone apps you have access to, and we're here to help you out with all of the ins and outs!

Please note that News+ is a paid-for subscription service that is within the Apple News app. You can continue to use the News app for free for the Top News and your personalized feed without having to subscribe to News+. If you choose to subscribe to News+, it costs $10 a month and it works with Family Sharing and the Apple One bundle.

How to subscribe to magazines

One of the perks of having an Apple News+ subscription is that it gets you access to hundreds of magazines. You can easily subscribe (or follow, in Apple parlance) to receive new issues of these automatically in the app.

1. Launch the Apple News app.
2. Tap on the News+ tab.
3. Browse through the magazines with the categories at the top.
4. Tap on a magazine you like. You'll either get a formatted table of contents view or a PDF.
5. Tap the magazine name at the top of the screen to go to their full profile page in News.
6. Tap on the + to add them to your favorites.

Another way to add favorites is to search for them.

1. Launch the Apple News app.
2. Tap on the Following tab.
3. Type in the magazine you're looking for into the search box.
4. Tap on the + next to their listing.
   • Optionally, you can tap on the magazine name to go to their full profile page and then tap on the + to add to Favorites.

How to access your magazines

Once you favorite those magazines you like, you'll need to be able to quickly access them whenever you want. Here's how to do that.

1. Launch Apple News.
2. Go to News+.
3. If it's not already selected, tapMy Magazines.
   • Here you can see what you are currently reading, and recent magazines in a scrollable list.

How to read an article

There are a couple of ways magazines present themselves in Apple News+ so the way you read an article may differ depending on which publication you are reading from.

1. Launch the Apple News app.
2. Go into the News+ tab.
3. Find a magazine that interests you, either by browsing the catalog or viewing My Magazines.
4. On magazines with a table of contents view, just scroll down and tap on the headline that you want to read.

5. With magazines that just have the standard PDF view, tap on the thumbnail of the magazine cover in the bottom left corner, where it says Open.
6. Scroll through the pages, then tap on the page you want to jump to. Since it is a PDF, you can use multitouch gestures to zoom in or out, pan the pages around, and turn to the next or previous page.

7. In the Today tab, you can also browse the featured articles curated by Apple, which will feature a mix of free and News+ articles from various publishers.
8. Tap on any article you want to read to view it.

How to share an article

When you find something to read using the steps above, but find it interesting enough to want to share with someone else, here's what you need to do.

1. Launch the Apple News app.
2. Go into the News+ section.
3. Find your magazine with an interesting article using the steps above, or browse through Apple's featured articles.
4. Tap on the article you want to read.
5. Tap on the Share button in the top right to bring up the native iOS Share Sheet.
6. Select how you want to share the article.

How to browse magazines by category

1. Launch the Apple News app.
2. Navigate to the News+ section.
3. Swipe across the row of category buttons at the top to reveal Catalog. Tap on it.
4. Tap on the drop-down menu to select a category.
5. Scroll through the magazine covers to find what you want.
6. Tap on a magazine to browse the contents and read articles.

Optionally, you can go through the entire catalog of over 300 magazines by selecting All Titles from the drop-down menu and going through them alphabetically.

How to save an article

When you read an article that is properly formatted specifically for Apple News (this does not work for PDF magazines), you can easily save the article for reading later in Apple News.

1. Follow the steps for reading an article above.
2. Tap on the Share button in the top right corner.
3. Scroll through the bottom of the Share Sheet (actions) and find the Save Story action (bookmark icon).
4. Tap on Save Story to save the article in your Saved Stories.

How to find saved articles

Once you've saved some articles, you need to know how to find them again to read them later.

1. Launch the Apple News app.
2. Go into the Following tab.
3. Scroll all the way to the bottom and find Saved Stories.
4. Click on Saved Stories to view and read the articles you saved.

How to view your history

Apple News keeps a record of what stories you've checked out, so if you remember reading something and want to go back to it to share with others later, then you can do that by checking your history.

1. Launch the Apple News app.
2. Go to the Following section.
3. Tap on History and you'll get a full record of what you've read in the Apple News app, including News+.

How to clear your history

If you feel like you don't need a full record of your reading history in Apple News, then go on ahead and clear it out. It's like clearing out the history or cache on your browser.

1. Launch Apple News.
2. Go to the Following screen.
3. Scroll down to the bottom and locate History.
4. Tap on History to view your history.
5. Click the Clear button in the top right corner.
6. A prompt appears with the following options: Clear History, Clear Recommendations, and Clear All. Select the one you want to do.

Please note that Apple News recommends stories to you based on your reading habits. Your choice on that menu will affect Apple News on all of your devices that are logged into that Apple ID.

How to change the font size in an article

If you have a hard time reading tiny fonts on your iPhone or iPad, then you should increase it! This only works on articles specially formatted for Apple News, and will not work on PDF magazines (you can use multitouch gestures to zoom in and out though).

1. Launch Apple News.
2. Go to News+ in the app.
3. Browse through a magazine and find an article that you want to read.
4. Tap on the AA button at the top, next to the magazine name.
5. Select the smaller A to decrease font size, and the larger A to increase font size.
6. Keep tapping until you find the font size that works best for you.

How to read The Wall Street Journal News

With News+, Apple included premium newspaper access with your subscription. This means you can access news from sources like The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, The Star (Canadian paid newspaper), and more. Stories from these feeds will appear in your standard News tab, and there is currently a featured section for The Wall Street Journal in the News+ tab. But if you want to view their pages directly, here's how to do it:

1. Launch Apple News.
2. Tap on the Search tab.
3. Type in The Wall Street Journal (or other paid newspaper) into the search box.
4. Results appear in real-time, so tap on the page for the newspaper you want as it pops up.
5. You can tap on the + button to add it to your Favorites as well, so more stories appear in your personalized feed.

News+ in Apple News is pretty straightforward, but some parts of the design are a bit unintuitive. It's also a shame that many of the magazines are just plain PDFs, and not specially formatted for Apple News.

Apple's News app on Apple Watch offers the latest headlines from the sources you trust. While you can't read full stories on the app, you can still keep up-to-date on the latest stories and save them for later reading on your iPhone or iPad. Here's how!

How to use the News app on Apple Watch

Simply titled "News" on Apple Watch, Apple News offers five top news articles picked from sources you follow in the News app on iPhone. These stories change throughout the day.

To access News on your Apple Watch:

1. Tap the Digital Crown to see all the apps installed on your watch.
2. Select the News app. It's a white icon with a bold red N.
3. Scroll horizontally to see each story's photo, headline, and brief summary.
4. On each headline, scroll vertically and tap Save for Later if you want to read the full article on your iPhone.

Besides accessing the top headlines through the News app on Apple Watch, you can also use the News app complication, which is available on different watch faces.

What you need to know

• Apple is going to change up Apple News+ after lackluster start.
• Many publishers have expressed concerns that the service isn't really helping their numbers.
• Other have concers about the layout and how the magazine structure isn't really conducive for news.
• Apple is listening to all of the feedback and will take it into account moving forward.

Apple is doing some self-reflection about Apple News+ after the subscription based service got off to a rocky three-month start. According to a new report from Business Insider, multiple publishers have expressed concerns about early numbers that show the new Apple service hasn't lived up to its billing.

In many cases, the revenue these publishers are getting is far below what Apple promised.

This confirms that Apple News+ is still a work in progress. Though Apple may be vociferous about the reach of its platform, it can't be denied that the publishing industry is a tricky business. One size will not fit all, and it seems all of Apple's changes haven't worked as well as it thought it would.

These publishers are in constant contact with Apple about what it can change moving forward.

It's unclear what Apple will change with Apple News+ or when. For now, it'll still remain as it is. Let us know if you have had any of the issues the publishers mentioned.

Apple News+: Everything you need to know

Apple gives a month-long free trial of News+, it's magazine subscription service, to let us get a feel for whether we want to keep paying $10 per month for access to more than 100 magazine titles. My 30-day trial ends today and I've decided that, even though I was skeptical at first, $10 per month is worth it.

Limited selection breeds curiosity

The first day Apple News+ launched, I spent most of my time reading magazines, checking out what was available, favoriting ones I wanted to follow. The selection is fine, but it's nothing to go wild over. Some of my most favorite magazines aren't available in News+, but they never are available in digital news package services. New+ titles are more like what you find at the grocery store than what you'd find at a dedicated magazine and newspaper stand. The selection is wide and broad but doesn't really cover the niche culture. That's not to say Apple won't convince future publishers to join the program. But for now, it's so-so.

The funny thing is, I still find myself gobbling up monthly and weekly rags like a kid in a candy store. No, I wouldn't go out to the store to buy Midwest Living off the newsstand. I've never had an interest in the subject matter. Guess what? I read through the May/June 2019 issue with delight because this particular issue was all about cabin living (or cabin visiting).

This is exactly why News+ has endeared itself to me. For the price of two standard magazines each month, I can browse through any number of titles I want. I can read SOME articles in The New Yorker without feeling obligated to read the entire thing, cover-to-cover. I can open up Vogue without worrying about my olfactory senses being bombarded by the overpowering smell of cologne and I can read one article that interested me from the front page and not feel compelled to read all about the latest fashion trends because I paid for the magazine.

Long-form content feeds the brain

It's not just about being able to read 100+ titles for one price, though. It's also about reading well-researched long-form content that you just don't get as much of by reading free articles on the Internet.

Wired Magazine, Popular Science, and National Geographic are just some examples of magazines that dive deep with their content coverage. I can quickly digest bits of news for free online or in the News app's free content, but if I want to know more about the history of an issue or why something is happening, these magazines dedicate time, resources, and good writers to bring a broader and deeper understanding of the subject matter.

From interviews with celebrities to a deeply researched commentary on how weightlifting is a great way for women to get in shape, these long-form articles are what made magazines unique to their newspaper counterparts and, its why just getting your news for free from your favorite blogs is not as nutritional for your brain.

I'd almost forgotten how nice it is to spend 45 minutes reading a single, focused article about a subject I'm interested in. It's like eating a really great meal with perfectly complimentary flavors in just the right portions, instead of snacking all day on carbs and sugars.

What's wrong is wrong

News+ is far from perfect, specifically in the user interface. It seems to me that Apple wanted to get the service out to us as soon as possible, before taking the time necessary to work out the design kinks, of which there are many.

The biggest complaint I see people have is not being able to find back issues of a magazine. As far as I can tell (I haven't tried every single one of the 100+ magazines), every one of them has a year's worth of back issues. You just have to know how to find it.

1. Select a magazine.
2. Tap the magazine's name at the top of the screen.
3. Browse through back issues listed at the top of the magazine's Home page.

This shouldn't be so hard to find. There should be a much easier way to binge read one magazine's past year of content. There are other interface issues I've come across that are so aggravating that I almost want to put down my iPad and walk away. Things like increasing the font size (when you scroll down an article, the font resizer disappears and you have to scroll back up to access it, but then you can only see the article headline, so you don't know how much bigger you need to make the font), or swiping or scrolling gestures (in some magazines, you can only swipe right/left, but in others, you can scroll down), or jumping to a new article (in some magazines, the pages are laid out like a PDF, but in others, you're taken back to the magazine's table of contents).

The thing is, though, for all its flaws, News+ is completely fixable. With the next big software update, Apple may have a complete redesign that addresses many of our complaints about the user interface, so it's definitely not a reason to cancel my subscription.

Blurring the lines between news and magazines

Apple News has been around since 2015 and because I've been using it since day one, I've built myself a fairly customized feed of content that caters to my personal interests. Maybe a little too customized.

When I integrated with News+, I started seeing more suggestions for articles I might be interested in based on magazine articles I'd read. People Magazine was suddenly in my For You section. Bon Appétit was enticing me with delicious looking plates of food. The Wall Street Journal's business spin on politics was peppered in with my tech news.

For some, that may be a bad thing. With a customized feed, you don't want to mess with the algorithm, but for me, it was like getting a fresh look at the world. Some content, I had to "dislike" so I wouldn't see so much of it in my news feed, but other content, I liked seeing. It breaks things up a little (my news feed is heavily focused on tech news).

Don't hit the cancel button so fast

The best part about having News+ is the variety of content. When I wake up in the morning, I want to digest everything I possibly can about the tech world. That's part of my job. At the end of the day, however, I love sitting back with a cocktail and my iPad and flipping through brightly colored pictures of places I want to go or houses I want to live in. News+ is both relaxing and informative, and that, to me, is worth $10 per month.

In today's world, we don't just want to "read the news". We want it delivered, not tossed onto the digital porch like a newspaper but curated with articles that fit our interests. Apple's News app isn't the first one to do this—Flipboard has been a high-profile example of this model for quite awhile—but the company's program has an advantage over all those in the App Store: It's part of iOS and available to everyone with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

You can turn your notifications on and off using the Following tab in the News app.

1. Launch the News app from your Home Screen.
2. Tap the Following tab. It's in the bottom right corner of your screen.
3. Tap Manage Notifications. You'll need to scroll to the bottom.
4. Tap the On/Off Switch next to the channel(s) you want to receive notifications from.

Reading articles that interest you is simple enough: You can either read selected articles for you from the Spotlight screen or pop into the News app itself.

1. Swipe right on your Home screen to open Spotlight.
2. Swipe up to scroll down.
3. Tap the news item you'd like to read.

Keep in mind that this won't remove the stories that are already in your feed, but it will prevent new ones from that publication from showing up.

3. Tap the Share button in the top-right corner of your screen. It's the box with the upward arrow.
4. Tap the Open in Safari button. The page then opens in the browser.

How to report a concern to Apple's News staff

If something about an article looks off—perhaps a video doesn't play, it's offensive, or mis-categorized—you can easily report a concern to Apple's News department.

1. Launch the News app from your Home screen.
2. Tap an article to open it. Alternatively, you can tap the Share Sheet button on the bottom right of the article preview and skip to step 4.
3. Tap the Share Sheet button in the bottom lefthand corner of your screen. It's the box with the upward arrow.

Your News app is constantly refreshing content in the background. This can use up battery and cellular data if you're not careful. Turn it off if you don't mind loading your stories when you open the app.

2. Scroll down and tap News.
3. Tap the switch next to Background App Refresh to disable it.

How to disable Cellular Data for the News app for iPhone and iPad

If your News app is refreshing in the background or if you're using it while not connected to Wi-Fi, it could be using up your cellular data, which could end up costing you a ton. If you're worried about your monthly data cap, it may be best to just disable data usage for the News app.

2. Scroll down and tap News.

Apple has debuted Apple News+, its subscription service for magazines, allowing you access to more than 300 periodicals for $9.99 per month after a month-long trial. You can get started with News+ simply by heading to the News app after you've updated your iPhone or iPad to iOS 12.2.

1. Open the News app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap News+ at the bottom of the screen or in the sidebar (iPad only).
3. Tap Get Started.

5. Authenticate your subscription on your iOS device.

And there you go! You can now scroll through the available magazines and read them at your leisure. You have a one-month trial of News+ before you have to start paying, so enjoy it.

How to get the Apple News app outside the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia

1. Launch Settings from your Home screen.

5. Search for, or scroll down to find United States, United Kingdom, Canada, or Australia.

Your iPhone or iPad will now be set to the U.S., U.K., Canada, or Australia and that should cause the Apple News app to appear on the next available slot on your Home screen. If it doesn't, you can try rebooting.

How to set the preferred language order after you change the region

When you change your iPhone or iPad's region, it'll automatically add a new language to your operating system. If the current language is not your native one, you can reorder the language settings.

1. Launch Settings from your Home screen.
2. Tap on General.
3. Tap on Language & Region.
4. Tap Edit in the upper right corner of the screen.

5. Drag your native language to the top of the list.
6. Tap Done in the upper right corner of the screen.
7. Tap Continue to confirm the language reorder.

This will allow you to keep your native language for most content. Apps and websites that don't support your native language (like the News app) will switch over to the secondary language when you open them.

Apple's made some big changes to the News app over the past few years. In iOS 10 it got a complete interface redesign. in iOS 11 we got Top Stories and the Spotlight tab, which is content curated by Apple's editorial staff. With iOS 12 on the horizon, Apple unveiled some of its new plans for the News app.

What's new in iOS 12 for the News app?

Apple has announced News+, a new subscription model for Apple News. With a News+ subscription, you'll gain access to over 300 magazines, and there will be support for digital subscriptions to premium newspapers, like the Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, Vulture, The Star, and more.

Some of the digital magazines will also have animated covers, bringing your experience to an entirely new level. Some magazines that are part of the News+ subscription include: National Geographic, Rolling Stone, Time, The New Yorker, WIRED, Popular Science, Bon Appetit, Sports Illustrated, People, VOGUE, and many more. We have a full list of supported magazine titles if you want to check for your favorites.

News+ launches today, Mar. 25, 2019, in the U.S. and Canada. You'll need to update to iOS 12.2 to get the updated News app, which is required to access News+. Apple plans to bring News+ to Australia and the UK later in the year, along with more support for European countries.

Apple News+ costs $10 USD or $13 CAD a month. There is currently a promotion where you can get the first month for free if you sign up. Your News+ subscription can also use Family Sharing at no additional cost. This means you and your family can share a News+ subscription, and everyone on the Family plan will have their own favorites and personalized feeds.

News+ is a separate subscription. You can still continue to use Apple News for free with Top News and curated For You feeds.

At WWDC 2018, Apple announced some minor user interface changes coming to iPhone and iPad with iOS 12.

There's going to be a new tab called "Browse" which will enable you to find new topics, channels, and news you may not already be reading.

The News app on iPad will also get a new sidebar with some extra information so you can dig into channels you're interested in.

The Stocks app will also have some integration with Apple News. In the Stocks app, you'll find business and finance news specifically for stocks you follow.

The biggest news in News is that it's coming to macOS. In macOS Mojave, you'll get the same experience as you do on iPad thanks to the universal framework Apple is testing, which allows porting of iOS apps to macOS.

In iOS 11.2.6 The For You would vary the content at the top of the page, depending on whether you'd accessed the app that day or not. Now, Top Stories will always be at the top of the page in the For You tab. That way, breaking and important news will be the first thing you see every time.

It's not just millennials. We're all accustomed to getting our news in short, easy to digest bites. Videos make it much easier for us to get through big news stories and now, Apple has made it much easier for us to find those videos with the Today's Videos and Must-See Videos sections.

In order to better tailor articles to your tastes, the News app automatically takes stock of your favorite channels and what you read. You can further narrow your reading options by using the Like button. There are two ways to do it.

You can like an article you're reading:

1. Launch the News app from your Home screen.
2. Tap a news article.
3. Tap the Love button on the bottom center of your screen. It's the heart.

To dislike an article, tap the heart with a line through it.

The other way to like or dislike a story is as follows:

1. Launch the News app from your Home screen.
2. Swipe left on an article.
3. Tap Love Story.

4. Swipe right on an article.
5. Tap Dislike Story.

Sometimes the best part of reading the news is spreadin' the news. You can share from within an article:

1. Launch the News app from your Home screen.

Apple's content blocker extensions, released last year, let third party apps set up rules to block ads, web fonts, comments, and other content in Safari and the also-new Safari View Controller, used in apps like Tweetbot to show web pages.

Content blockers don't, however, work in Apple's own News app. So, if a publisher doesn't serve Apple News Format, or provide a full RSS feed for Apple News to render, Apple News has to go out and get the original web page... ads and all. That's has led some to ask if there's a massive massive conspiracy at play designed to protect the ads of publishers enrolled in Apple's News program. The truth, of course, is far simpler and more mundane.

• iOS content blockers only work in Safari and Safari View Controller
• News.app isn't Safari and doesn't use Safari View Controller.

Safari View Controller offers a lot of performance and power, but it's tightly locked down for security reasons. That means, if you want a more flexible, custom way to show a web page, you have to use one of the earlier frameworks, like WKWebView. News wants to customize its web view to look like the app — check out the buttons at the bottom — so it's using WKWebView.

That means no content blockers, and no other extensions whose activation rules, like content blockers, only show up for Safari or Safari View Controller. (My password manager, for example, doesn't show up.)

In order to get content blockers — and other apple.active-webpage bound extensions — working in News, Apple would have to back-port support to the older web views, like WKWebView, or make Safari View Controller more customizable and switch to using that instead. (Easy for me to say — I'm a writer, I don't have to implement it or real with the security ramifications!)

Either way, it's a technical limitation, not an evil plan. (I double-checked that with a few developer friends intimately familiar with action extensions, just to make sure.) So, enjoy News the way it is for now or find yourself an article reading app you enjoy more. That's the beauty of the app ecosystem.

Updated July 2018: Apple News still doesn't allow ad blockers, and this information is still a clear explanation as to why that is.

Apple News Publisher is the tool that allows people to set up and publish content to the Apple News app on iPhone and iPad. Open to anyone with an iCloud account, News Publisher lets you do everything from managing your publication's branding to posting articles directly to your publication.

What's new with Apple News Publisher?

Publishers can now take advantage of Google's DoubleClick ad platform to serve advertisements within Apple's News app. This follows a limited test in 2017. For now, HTML5-based DoubleClick ads are not available to publishers, nor are pre-roll video ads. From Digiday:

What is Apple News Publisher?

Apple News Publisher is Apple's tool to help people and publications publish their content onto Apple News. It's an iCloud application, and you can sign up for Apple News Publisher if you have an iCloud account. Once you sign up, you'll be able to access News Publisher at any time by heading to the Home screen of iCloud.com and clicking on News Publisher.

How do I get started with Apple News Publisher?

The first thing you'll need to do is head to the News Publisher website. You'll need to sign in with your Apple ID, then go about setting up your channel. Enter the various pieces of information asked of you, including a channel name that matches the name of your publication or business. You can also include a URL and upload a logo if you have one. News Publisher will also ask for your contact information.

You'll then have to get approved as a publisher by submitting at least three articles for review. After you're approved you can get getting your stories published through Apple News.

How do my stories get published to Apple News?

There are two ways that you can use News Publisher to get your content on Apple News. First, you can create articles within News Publisher itself. You can create a new article directly in Publisher, choosing from various templates, entering text and images, and picking titles and subtitles. You can also reformat your text, add links, and more.

If you already publish to a blog or other online publication, you can use the Apple News API or a plug-in to connect your existing content management system (CMS) to News Publisher. You'll need to send at least three articles from your CMS to News Publisher, after which you'll be able to inspect how they will look in the News app on iPhone and iPad.

Does Apple need to approve all of the articles that I publish through Apple News?

No. After your initial three articles submitted to get your channel set up, you can publish the rest of your content without further approval from Apple.

What formats does Apple News Publisher support?

News Publisher supports two publishing formats, Apple News Format (ANF) and RSS. For ANF articles, these can be created directly in News Publisher or using your current CMS if you have one. For RSS, you'll need to add the desired RSS feed to News Publisher and request approval. You can switch from RSS to ANF at any time.

What is a channel?

Your channel is a representation of your publication in the News app. All of the content that you publish to your channel in News Publisher appears in your publication in Apple News on iPhone and iPad. You can create multiple channels if you have multiple publications.

What are sections?

A section in News is like a section in a newspaper or on a news website, something like Politics, Business, or Sports. While each publication has one default section, you can add more at any time through News Publisher.

News Publisher also allows you to add up to 25 sections, though Apple recommends six to eight as a desirable range.

Can I give other people access to my publication?

You can add members to your Apple News publication in News Publisher. These members can be assigned different roles for a publication, including Administrator, Editor-in-Chief, Editor, Sales, or Viewer, and they can all be given specific permissions. A member's role can be changed at any time by an Administrator in News Publisher.

Additionally, Administrators can delete members at any time. If you need to revoke an access invitation for your publication, you'll have to do it before the member accepts it.

Can I edit my Apple News articles once they've been published?

If you created an article in News Publisher, you can edit it right there, while article created in an external CMS will need to be edited there. You can also delete any draft or published article, though it might take a few minutes to disappear from Apple News.

Can I keep specific articles at the top of my publication in Apple News?

You can promote up to three of your published articles in each section of your publication. This will move those articles to the top of their designated section in Apple News, making sure that readers will see them when they open your publication.

What sort of analytic data can I see?

News Publisher offers detailed analytics for channels that utilize the Apple News Format. This data covers things like unique and total views, how many times an article has been shared, how many people have 'loved' an article, and demographic data. If your channel has a subscription option, News Publisher also tells you how many of your unique users have one.

Much of this data is available at both the channel level and the article level.

Can I have advertising in my publication?

There are two ways for ads to be sold for your publication: you can sell them yourself or Apple can sell ads for you. If your publication is set up in the Apple News Format, you'll need to have an account with the Apple Developer Program. If you do, you'll be able to use Workbench to manage ad placement if you choose to do that on your own.

Does Apple take a cut of my ad revenue?

That depends on who is selling your adds. If you sell your ads yourself, you keep 100% of the revenue, while you'll keep 70% of the revenue if you have Apple sell the ads for you.

April 17, 2018: Apple News expected to launch Texture-style subscription service

Texture, recently acquired by Apple (see below), offered Apple Music-style all-you-can-read subscription access to over 200 magazines a month. And like Apple Music, that's the kind of value and revenue add that makes core businesses like iPhone even more attractive and valuable.

Rolling Texture up into Apple News and offering a similar subscription service has been the assumption since day one, but it looks like it might take up to a year to get off the ground.

Mark Gurman, writing for Bloomberg:

WWDC 2018, the presumed September 2018 iPhone event, or even a potential March 2019 event could all serve as public launching points for the new service.

My question: In addition to magazines, could Apple get the big newspapers on board?

But what does that mean for current Texture users (including on Android) and for Apple News? In the age of fake news, extremist click-bait, bots, and bubbles, will anyone really care about trusted sources and sustainable publishing? And how much does Apple really care, given neither News nor Texture are available in more than half-a-handful of countries?

Eddy Cue: It's a great, great day for us. We announced that we did an acquisition this morning, of Texture. Texture is an app that has been in the iOS Store. It's beloved by our iPad users. You get access to all of the great magazines from Condé Nast, from Time, Meredith, Hearst.

Rene: "We just did an acquisition." That's how Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, announced the purchase. What is Texture? It's been called the Netflix of magazines, but that's not quite right. It's similar to Netflix, in that for one monthly subscription price, you get access to a whole range of catalog content.

In this case, from a bunch of magazine publishers instead of TV studios. It's different than Netflix in that they don't produce their own original content. It is purely a catalog play. It's also different because they provide a level of curation broken down, not just at the magazine scale, but at the article scale.

In fact, when you launch Texture, you start off with highlights -- new and noteworthy stories, top 10 reads, collections, a daily roundup, top stories in health and fitness, top stories in entertainment, top stories in science and tech, top stories in business and finance, quick reads.

That lets you dive, not just into the magazines you might be interested in, but into a whole range of stories you may have never even thought you'd be interested in. Of course, you can also go to your library and you can see all the magazines that you've added to it, so that if you have favorite magazines, you can make sure that you never miss an issue.

You can also go into different categories and see all the magazines that are available. You can look at any of those magazines at any time. Let's say I don't read "Entertainment" every month, but I see they have a cover story on Marvel's, "Avengers," and I want to dive into that, I can get straight to it. The interface is OK. It's not great, but it's OK. You can page through like a traditional magazine.

Somewhat confusingly, depending on the magazine, you either just continue swiping sideways to read the story, or you swipe across for different stories, and then up and down to read those stories. You can also go in at any time and see all the back issues for a magazine. If you're not just interested in the current issue, but you want to see the previous issues, they're all there as well.

That's a fairly compelling offer on multiple axis. Not only can you read most of the magazines you want any time you want, including downloading them for offline reading, but also means you don't have to acquire, carry around, and dispose of a bunch of physical media. You can have hundreds of magazines all in one iPad. Here's what Eddy Cue had to say on apple.com...

"We're excited Texture will join Apple, along with an impressive catalog of magazines from many of the world's leading publishers. We are committed to quality journalism from trusted sources and allowing magazines to keep producing beautifully designed and engaging stories for users." That's something Cue hammered on at South by Southwest, as well.

Eddy: I think that there are a few things that we've always cared about in Apple News. First of all, we wanted to bring great articles from trusted sources in a beautiful layout. Obviously, Texture, with the brands that I just told you about, they have magazines from "Esquire" to "Vanity Fair" to "Time" to "Sports Illustrated."

Some of the best magazines in the world, so they have some incredible content, and content that takes a long time to create.

Rene: There are in-depth articles. We're really excited about bringing that into Apple News to augment all of the other content that we have now from thousands of publishers. The key to ours is about curation. We want the best articles. We want them to look amazing...

We want them to be from trusted sources so we don't have a lot of issues that have been going around in the marketplace. If you're not familiar with the issues they've been having, it involves everything.

From the rise of fake news, which propagates across the Internet much faster than actual vetted factual news, things like bots, which have been used, or accused of, manipulating news in an attempt to manipulate events, and of people living in bubbles increasingly getting more extremist views and not challenging themselves with new and different ideas.

With Facebook actually going so far as to deprecate news and to deprecate content from publishers in favor of content shared by other people which may or may not have any bearing on the actual reality going on in the world outside us. This is how Cue addresses that...

"Look, today, for some of the publishers that we have, including some very large ones like CNN, we already account for 60 to 70 percent of the articles read across the web and other services. We've become a pretty decent-sized player in a short amount of time around it. We also started where our customers that were reading were following about four publishers in Apple News a year ago..."

"Today, they follow more than 20. There's been tremendous growth in Apple News. We just want to continue to accelerate that by bringing things that are startups, like "PACIFIC," which is the name of Byers' newsletter. To things that are big, like Condé Nast." At which point, [laughs] Byers presses him again about Google and Facebook.

Cue responds, "It's always hard to sit from the outside and talk about others. I do know that, for ourselves, when we get into this, we think when you have a large platform there's a lot of responsibility. We've always taken a great deal of responsibility for our platform, starting with iTunes when we did the Music Store to the App Store, and certainly Apple News podcasts. We have a bunch of rules..."

"We came up with guidelines that had to be followed in order to participate in there. At times, we got a lot of hate for it. People weren't happy that we had guidelines. The other part is that nobody is completely free. There's no such thing as free. There's no pornography on any of these sites..."

"People draw lines, and you can decide where you want to draw the line. We do think free speech is important, but we don't think white supremacy is free speech that's important. This harkens back to iOS 5 and the introduction of 'Newsstand.'"

Scott Forstall: We've now created a single place, right in the App Store, that combines all of these newspaper and magazines so you can find them all in one place. When you purchase them, they're automatically downloaded and placed in the Newsstand. It's a new place right on the Home screen. It looks like a beautiful news rack.

Rene: Even back then, Apple and Steve Jobs wanted to do something to support the news -- almost a romanticized Aaron Sorkin-esque version of the news -- as something that could educate and elevate humanity, that could bring knowledge and insight, and depth and clarity, to our communications and our relationships.

Ultimately, the sheer quantity of apps that you had to manage, and the lack of consistency in any of their interfaces, meant that Newsstand could never gain any traction, either in the features that developers and publishers wanted, or the usability that readers wanted. Apple ended up cancelling it. With iOS 9, Apple got back into news. Both with a widget in the Today View and with a new News app.

Susan Prescott: It's right here on the Home screen. The first thing News wants to do is get a sense of what I like. It's going to give me a short list of really great choices to choose from. You'll see as I tap, additional recommendations come in on the bottom to give me even more choices. I read, "Atlantic," "Wired," "New York Times," and "ESPN." I'm still with you, Warriors...

[laughter]

Susan Prescott: ...and, "Daring Fireball." Topics, too -- like science, baking, and travel. I could keep going, but I think that's a great start. I'll tap, done. News creates a personalized feed called, "For You." It's based on the choices I just made, and it's all my news in one place.

Rene: At the most primitive level, it could pull in articles over RSS, and just give you as much or as little as any publisher was willing to provide over RSS. There's also an Apple News format that has its own markup language and lets you create much more dynamic, much more visually interesting, layouts.

Apple signed deals with a variety of publishers to make sure they had, not only had stock content in there, but content from a variety of newspapers and magazines. Many of which are similar to the ones that Eddy Cue called out when he spoke about Texture. Now, initially, the news in the widget and the news in the News app, were completely unrelated. Both were black projects, secret projects.

Neither knew about each other, but come the next version of iOS, that was unified. What you read in the News app was actually reflected in the News Widget. What you tapped on in the News Widget, brought you to the News app. It started to make News into an OS-level service, similar to how photography is handled.

Since then, Apple has done a great job at expanding News -- at expanding editorials, expanding curation, at introducing features for everything from the Oscars to the Winter Olympics. At the same time, they haven't really done much to push News further. There's still no News app for the Mac. There's still no video version of news for the Apple TV.

While News is becoming a better and better product, critically, there's still no real international distribution. Which is incredibly frustrating for people outside the US, the UK, and Australia, the original launch countries. It could be due to different licensing or content regulations, it could be due to future plans Apple has for the product.

This is the company that launched Apple Music in a hundred countries all at the same time, all at once. Yet, they've been unable to get news beyond that small half a handful of countries in the intervening two years. That's not just frustrating, that's flabbergasting. The amount of money that Apple paid for Texture is undisclosed.

Though, at Apple scale, it's probably safe to say it's roughly equivalent to the coins found in the sofa in Eddy Cue's office at Results Way, or, I guess, Infinite Loop. Now, Apple may or may not integrate Texture into Apple News. What Eddy Cue said at South by Southwest strongly suggests that that's the way they're leaning. My understanding is that it's not completely decided yet.

Either way, Apple now has stronger relationships with publishers. They have a subscription platform -- similar to Apple Music -- that they can grow out. Apple has said that they're not changing anything immediately. The Texture app that's available -- on iPhone, and Android, on Kindle, and Windows -- today is still going to be available tomorrow.

Everyone who subscribes to Texture today, will still be able to use it on all of those platforms tomorrow. There are going to be some challenges. For example, the Apple only exists right now in the US and Canada. Which is even worse than Apple's News app. There's also no accessibility built in.

Which is something that's very important to Apple, and something I think they're going to want to address as soon as possible. You have to think that Apple has grander plans for all of this. Apple being Apple, those grander plans are no doubt at the intersection of technology and liberal arts. Apple wants to grow its services and subscription revenue, of course.

Apple also want to solve the problem of News. Apple is hoping that by providing iOS -- and hopefully MacOS eventually -- as a platform, that it can do for News what it did for music in the age of digital downloads, and now digital streaming.

That is, provide access to a huge audience that may not be willing to pay the same price they're used to for individual newspapers or magazines, but will be willing to pay in aggregate for access to all those individual newspapers and magazines. That's absolutely good for Apple. It, once again, makes the iPhone and the iPad more valuable.

Not only are you getting a phone or a tablet, not only are you getting access to TV shows and movies, not only are you getting access to music, but you're getting access to information and to high quality information. It could be good for publishers as well, especially as they increasingly adapt to the digital age.

It could be especially good for them in the age of Google and Facebook, which have basically stolen all of the publisher's content for years, under the guise of providing them with audience, but really as a way to grow their own advertising and marketing bases. Here's what Rupert Murdoch said recently...

"Facebook and Google have popularized scurrilous news sources through algorithms that are profitable to those platforms but inherently unreliable, but the remedial measures that both companies have so far proposed are inadequate commercially, socially, and journalistically. The time has come to consider a different route..."

"If Facebook wants to be recognized as trusted publishers, then it should pay those publishers a carriage fee similar to the model adopted by cable companies. The publishers are obviously enhancing the value and integrity of Facebook through their news and content but are not being adequately rewarded for those services..."

"Carriage payments would have a minor impact on Facebook's profit, but a major impact on the prospects for publishers and journalists."

Tina Brown..."I am very angry and upset about the way advertising revenue has been essentially pirated by Facebook Google world without nearly enough giveback -- no giveback, really -- to the people who create those brilliant pieces that are posted all over their platforms. It's high time they gave back to journalism."

Jeff Zucker..."In a Google and Facebook world, monetization of digital mobile continues to be more difficult than we would have expected or liked. I think we need help from advertising world and from the technology world to find new ways to monetize digital content. Otherwise, good journalism will go away..."

"Everyone is looking at whether these combinations of AT&T and Time Warner, or Fox and Disney, pass government approval and muster. The fact is, nobody, for some reason, is looking at these monopolies that are Google and Facebook. That's where the government should be looking and helping to make sure everyone else survives..."

We've seen this affect even digital publishers. Many of them went all in on Facebook. Many of them even "pivoted" to video to go all in on Facebook's new video product, only to have Facebook switch gears and basically gut any and all revenue from those publications, any and all traffic from those publications, and now they're shutting down, now they're laying off.

Whether or not Apple can change that -- either with Apple News, or Texture, or some other product -- remains to be seen, but it's important that someone is trying. It's important that someone is thinking different.

iOS 11.2.5 will bring with it a feature for Siri that anyone who has used an Amazon Echo will be familiar with: the news briefing. While it works differently from Amazon's offering, this news briefing is a great way to catch up on the day's news without needing to scroll through your phone.

What are Siri news briefs?

With iOS 11.2.5, you'll be able to ask Siri give you a news brief from one of a few available sources. These briefs come through the iOS Podcasts app, offering news rundown shows provided by NPR, The Washington Post, Fox News, and CNN. Each news brief is actually the latest episode in a daily news podcast offered by those news organizations.

Siri will only offer a news brief from a single source, which by default appears to be NPR for now. However, you can ask Siri to change your news source to one of the other three available services if you choose.

How to get Siri to play a news brief

Getting Siri to play a news brief is as simple as asking it to. However, note that you'll need to use the "Hey Siri" command, rather than holding down your Home button (or side button on iPhone X), as holding the button will have Siri show you headlines found in the News app.

1. Say "Hey Siri, give me the news" to start your briefing.
2. Say "Hey Siri, switch to [choose one: Washington Post, CNN, Fox News, or NPR] to switch between the available briefing services.
3. Tap Open Podcasts to be taken to the Podcasts app and the show to which you're currently listening.

Apple has reportedly named the first editor-in-chief for Apple News. Lauren Kern, Executive Editor for New York Magazine, has apparently been selected for the role.

Neither Apple or Kern have commented on this news, and as of yet, we don't know what it will mean for Apple News to have an editor-in-chief. For the most part, Apple News currently provides a central location from which you can read news from a wide selection of sources from around the world. But if Apple is hiring an editor-in-chief for Apple News, it suggests that they plan to take the service even further.

As to what that could mean, we can only speculate, though Apple could reveal its ambitions for News soon with the kickoff of WWDC 2017.

iOS 9.3 brought greater personalization and curation to Apple News, but I'm hoping iOS 10 brings something more—system-wide integration. That's because I read a ton of news. Technology. Politics. Entertainment. Culture. Science. You name it, I've read it on my iPhone or iPad. But not in the same place. Instead of a single source for everything interesting, I have a bunch of little places scattered about the system, some that overlap and some that don't, but none that give me everything that I want.

News debuted just last year in iOS 9. It's an attempt to solve a really hard problem—bringing magazines, newspapers, and independent publications fully into the digital age in a way that's accessible and sustainable. The sustainable part is still a huge question mark for everyone, but the accessible part feels really close. It feels like something Apple could iterate on and make simple and system-wide.

Right now, it's the opposite of that. There's the "minus one" page to the left of the Home screen. That's the Siri + Search page where, at the bottom, I get a list of news. I have no idea what criteria is used to populate the list, but it certainly seems to have absolutely no connection to "For You", the personalized front page of the Apple News app.

"For You" is populated based on the choice of publications and topics I made when I set Apple News up, and recommendations based on what I've tapped on since. It makes no effort, though, to integrate the articles I've saved to Reading List, nor the ones pulled for me from my social network Shared Links.

I understand why: All these features were built by separate teams with little or no knowledge of each other's projects. Still, I'm left with experiences that are isolated, all pieces of the same puzzle—my picks, my recommendations, my shares, my... whatever the heck "minus one" is pulling in—that aren't being put together.

Instead, imagine a system-level service that provides a unified stream of news, informed by the initial setup of the News app, improved by what you tap on and like, enhanced by Apple's algorithms and editors, and augmented by what you've saved to read later and by what your friends have shared on your social networks.

Just like Photos is now core to the experience, so too could be news: Integrated together and synced across all Apple devices.

That way, the results on the Siri + Search page would be consistent with the For You page in News, and the Reading List in Safari. There could even be a toggle to show just recommended, saved, or shared if you want to see exactly what came from where.

The same content could be put it in News and Reading List for Mac, just the videos could be pulled and queues in News for Apple TV, and alerts on anything that ranks as important could be sent via notification to Apple Watch.

That's what I'm hoping iOS 10 — and tvOS 10 and watchOS 3 — brings us: News nirvana.

Apple News is a new application for iPhone and iPad coming in iOS 9, built around your favorite news content. It lays out your news in a grid, animating as you scroll. News allows publishers to create custom content, including typography and layouts, bringing their branding into the app.

In addition to custom typography, publishers can also insert inline photo galleries, videos, and more. Publishers include The New York Times, Quartz, and ESPN. The New York Times offers users 30 free articles every day.

When you first open News, it will ask for your favorite publications. While reading, you can scroll through articles, and swipe left and right to move to a new one. You can bookmark articles to read later, and save your favorite publications and topics. News will also suggest new things to read based on what you read.

News will roll out first in the U.S., U.K., and Australia.

Newsstand lets you subscribe to your favorite magazines and periodicals right from your iPhone and iPad, no paper copies required. When new issues are available, they're delivered right to Newsstand in digital format. In most cases you pay for Newsstand subscriptions just as you would a physical magazine subscription. However, managing and canceling Newsstand subscriptions is much easier than canceling physical ones!

How to view, manage, and cancel Newsstand subscriptions

1. Launch the Settings app.
2. Tap on iTunes & App Store.
3. Tap on your Apple ID at the very top.
4. Tap on View Apple ID in the popup menu.
5. Tap on Manage under the Subscriptions section.
6. Here you'll see a list of all your subscriptions to apps and newsstand items. Tap on the one you'd like to change, view, or cancel.
7. On this screen you can unsubscribe, change your subscription if there are multiple options, and view details.

That's all there is to it! As you can see, there isn't a dedicated section for Newsstand subscriptions, they are put in the same section as all of your other subscription services. This makes it convenient to edit all of them at one time. And if you ever decide to change a subscription again, just follow the same steps again!

Prior to iOS 7, Newsstand was a special folder that shared iBooks' distinctive wood shelving look, that couldn't be removed from the Home screen or hidden in another folder, and whose icon gave you glimpse of the issues stacking up inside, if any. Worse still, all the special abilities Newsstand apps enjoyed in previous versions of iOS, including auto-renewing subscriptions, and background downloads, are now available to all apps in iOS 7. Creator of The Magazine, Marco Arment:

Technically and politically, Newsstand also seems trapped between folder and app, between tent-pole feature in iOS 5 and barely any attention at all in iOS 7. And Newsstand developers are trapped with it, heavily discouraged from making the jump to regular apps, as they'd lose their existing subscribers in the transition.

So they're left somewhere in the middle. Newsstand is no longer treated like a folder, but Newsstand apps still can't be dragged out on the Home screen. Newsstand can be hidden in other folders now, but the Newsstand folder can't be found again via Spotlight search. Newsstand apps still get to update their covers to show off new issues, but those covers can no longer be seen in the Newsstand icon.

iOS 8 could roll around with a significant Newsstand relaunch, or with Newsstand obliterated entirely, or it could simply remain where it is now, stuck. For people with no interest at all in Newsstand, some of that is likely welcome news. For publishers, and for really great apps like The Magazine, The Loop Magazine, the New York Times, the future seems less than certain.

(Interestingly, Google has just merged their magazine service with their Currents product and relaunched it as Google Play Newsstand.)

It took a long while, but The Wall Street Journal has finally come to Apple's iOS Newsstand. The paper joins thousands of other publications that are publishing via the magazine/newspaper service, and like many, the Journal's gone for a traditional layout that echoes that of the dead tree version. That said, the Newsstand distribution of the Journal is significantly more flexible than its paper cousin, offering full-screen image viewing, three text sizes, social network sharing options (that frustratingly don't use the built-in iOS sharing and require separate authorizations), and faster navigation between articles. It's not quite the authentically-digital that is The Magazine, but it's better than the PNG/JPG images that many publications are unfortunately vomiting into Newsstand.

The app uses a traditional newspaper-style layout, putting the headlines and preview ledes for multiple stories on a single page with an assortment of thumbnail images as well as larger stand-alone photos and videos (the only way you're getting video with the paper version is by using it as a massive flipbook). Navigation between pages of both the article preview grids and within the articles themselves is accomplished with a simple swipe to the left or right, though you'll have to contend with numerous fullscreen ads interspersed throughout. Apparently the $12.99 the paper asks per month for an iPhone subscription or the $21.99 a month they want if you want full access on an iPad (which also includes iPhone and website access) isn't enough to cover their needs, though it is worth noting that's the same price the Journal charges outside of the App Store system, and through Newsstand Apple's going to be taking a 30% cut. Additionally, the pinch gesture works as a back command, dropping you out of the article and into the previews, and from there to the 'start screen'.

As is standard for Newsstand subscriptions, the latest daily edition of The Wall Street Journal will download itself in the background. The Newsstand edition of the Journal also allows you to save articles for offline reading and offers up-to-the-second stock quotes and market news - it is The Wall Street Journal, after all. Many of the articles throughout the app are marked with little key icons, indicating that you're going to need a paid subscription to read them. There are still plenty of articles that aren't locked down, though those are mostly general news you can get anywhere and not the in-depth market and economic reporting for which the Journal is known.

By accepting the 30% cut demanded by Apple, The Wall Street Journal is acknowledging that they need to be present in full on smartphones and tablets like the iPhone and iPad. You're welcome to balk at the monthly cost of the subscription (especially if you're wanting to read the Journal on an iPad, as the same content is offered to smartphone users, it's just... smaller), but that's increasingly becoming the rule when it comes to 'old' media making the transition to new platforms.

Apple has pushed out an update for iTunes that fixes a few bugs. iCloud purchases should now appear in your library even if iTunes Match is turned on, users with large libraries should now enjoy a more responsive experience, the AirPlay button will appear when it should, and there is now an option to display duplicate items in your library as well as other important stability and performance improvements.

One of the most requested features for Netflix for iPhone and iPad is the "Just for Kids" section that's available on most other platforms -- and now it's finally here on the iPad! Even better, you don't have to do anything to get it. Netflix pushed a backend update and now you should see a "Just for Kids" button at the top left of the screen next to the Browse button. Unfortunately, Just for Kids is only available on the new iPad and the iPad 2, although Netflix has promised that the first generation iPad should receive support soon. No word yet on Netflix for iPhone.

The Just for Kids section of Netflix is filled with movies and TV shows suitable for children ages 12 and under. It's great for parents because it gives the peace of mind that your child won't accidentally stumble across something inappropriate, and it's great for kids because it's easy for them to find something they like. Keep in mind, however, that there isn't a way to lock your kids into Just for Kids, so adult supervision may still be required.

The recently announced iPhone 5 is going to sport new and improved cameras that allow you to take Panorama images be simply panning across a scene, 40% faster photo capture, better low-light performance, improved noise reduction, enhanced 1080p HD video recording, a front-facing camera that can record 720p HD video, and more.

Take better photos with the iPhone 5

Although the iPhone 5's camera did not receive a bump in megapixels over the iPhone 4S, the new camera does have improved HDR capabilities that will produce better color and tone and reduce motion blur. Apple also claims that the quality of photographs taken in low light have improved -- but I'll believe that when I see it.

Shoot panorama photos automagically with the iPhone 5

One of the huge new additions to iOS 6 and the iPhone 5 (and iPhone 4S) camera is the new panorama feature that lets you capture up to 240 degrees of scenery. The gyroscope, new A6 chip, and Camera app all work together to seamlessly create a single shot with a resolution of up to 38 megapixels.

Record better video with the iPhone 5

Just like the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5 is equipped with the ability to shoot 1080p HD video, but Apple boasts that the iPhone 5 camera will let in more light, creating brighter videos. The auto white balance and noise reduction have also been improved, and image stabilization is still included, of course.

Take photos while recording video with the iPhone 5

One of the great new features of the Camera app that is exclusive to the iPhone 5 is the ability to take still images while simultaneously recording 1080p HD video. I'm personally very excited about this because I often choose not to record video because I don't want to miss the opportunity for a good photo.

Better video compression with the iPhone 5

With the iPhone 5, you'll be able to record the same high-quality 1080p HD video as with the iPhone 4S, but the iPhone 5 is equipped with better compression algorithms making the file sizes 20% smaller. This means it'll be faster to email or send via MMS.

iPhone 5 features a FaceTime HD camera

It wasn't only the rear-facing iSight camera on the iPhone 5 that got a boost -- the front-facing FaceTime camera is now finally capable of 720 HD video recording. I've always avoided using the front-facing camera like the plague, but hopefully it won't be too bad, now. Additionally, FaceTime Video calls are also possible over a cellular connection without WiFi, but availability is up to the carriers.

Pinterest lovers rejoice! The Pinterest app has gone universal and is now available on both the iPhone and iPad. It features a gorgeous design with an easy-to-access side panel. Pinterest for iPad allows you to view your pinboards, pin your inspirations, browse by category, follows new boards, and more.

When viewing your following tab, the pins of the people you follow are displayed in a stylish collage format similar to the web version of Pinterest. Each pin displays a photo, the description, and the "pinned by", "via", and "onto" information. Tapping on the pin will display it nice and big in a popup that allows you to repin, like, share to Facebook and Twitter, and leave a comment. Tapping on the big photo will open up it's associated web page or article in a built-in browser.

From the side panel, you can access the built-in web browser, all of the available categories, and your profile page.

When Pinterest was first released for the iPhone, I was not impressed. It had poor performance and was not a joy to use. I have the opposite impression of Pinterest for iPad. It is very well done, has an intuitive interface, and runs great. My Pinterest activity has great declined in the past few months, but with Pinterest for iPad, I expect I'll be using Pinterest much more often.

Newsstand is Apple's default way to enjoy magazines on the iPad. But is it the best way? Zinio has been around a long time, and Next Issue is brand new, and both offer different options and approaches. But is one better than another, and for whom?

Let's find out!

Newsstand vs. Next Issue vs. Zinio: User interface

Newsstand is Apple's built-in magazine and newspaper subscription service, and comes on every iPhone and iPad since iOS 5. The icon for Newsstand will always be on your Home screen and to the dismay of many, can not be tucked into a folder (long story short, because it is a folder).

When you launch Newsstand it will open much like a folder in iOS does and present you with a virtual bookshelf that will display all of the items you've currently subscribed to through the App Store. From here you can choose to open one of the subscriptions you already have or visit the App Store to find more content.

Tapping into a subscription will bring you to the main page for that publication's Newsstand offerings. Here is where Newsstand gets a bit confusing. Instead of applying a universal standard to all libraries, each subscription has their own menu system and navigation. This can get a bit irritating if you have a lot of subscriptions in Newsstand. Everything from the way you restore purchases to how you actually flick through and read a magazine can differ from publication to publication.

Considering Apple prides themselves on a consistent user experience, the way Newsstand has been implemented baffles me. Even the Store section is a bit confusing and leaves much to be desired. Instead of having its own store it is simply thrown in as a category to the App Store since all your subscriptions are technically apps that have in-app subscription purchases for issues. It was an easy way for Apple to add magazines and newspapers to what they've already been doing with games and other types of apps for a long time.

There's also no easy way to search for subscriptions. You'd just search the App Store like you would for a game or other type of app. It will mix in newspapers, magazines, and every other type of app imaginable into the results which makes it even more frustrating to find content. It may have been an easy add-in for Apple but it's definitely not a convenient one for readers.

Next Issue takes a different approach to content management on the iPad. Once you download the app and launch it you'll be brought to the main library. Tap the large plus sign to add the subscriptions you'd like in your library. Tapping into any one of them will take you to the issues that are available for that magazine.

Since Next Issue is based on an overhead subscription cost a month you don't have to pay for individual issues. Adding a magazine will add a tile for it to your library screen. From there you can tap into individual issues which won't download onto your iPad until you tap into them.

The overall interface of Next Issue is not only clean but it's organized a lot better than Newsstand. Finding content is easy and downloading issues is simple since there aren't any outside subscriptions to manage.

Zinio is somewhat of a happy medium between Newsstand and Next Issue. While you will browse for magazines solely inside the app just like you would in Next Issue, you'll have to buy and manage individual subscriptions like you do with Newsstand.

There are three main tabs along the bottom that you will use to navigate the app: Explore, Read, and Shop. The Explore section will give you free samples of articles from popular magazines. This is a nice way not only to discover magazines that you may not of otherwise known about but to have some content every month or so that you don't have to pay for. The Read tab will give you a list of all the issues and magazines you have purchased.

The last tab and the most obvious is the Shop tab where you can browse for content to purchase. The layout of Zinio's shop section is not only appealing but very easy to navigate and find content. You can search through main sections and also view content available for under $10, what's trending, staff picks, and more.

When it comes to interface it's a tie between Zinio and Next Issue. They are both designed with the user in mind and make it much easier to find content than Apple's own Newsstand app.

Newsstand vs. Next Issue vs. Zinio: Reading

The most important aspect of using a magazine app is the experience you get while reading your content. While it's almost impossible to create a streamlined experience across all magazines as every publisher will do it different, the in-app controls can certainly help the process along.

Newsstand stops controlling how content is presented the minute you tap into a publication off your bookshelf. From there on out it's pretty much at the magazine producer's discretion as far as how you're going to view content going forward. In some instances, publishers have really taken advantage of this to make gorgeous digital content. In others it can be frustrating and cluttered.

Next Issue allows publishers to design the magazines in whatever fashion they think is best for showcasing their content but there is still a continuous navigation system that follows through regardless what you're reading. Tapping on the screen will bring up a transparent menu that allows you to tab through sections, return to your library, view a list menu of what's in the issue, and more.

The only thing I noticed about Next Issue that was a little frustrating was that if you are on a page with an ad, depending on how the publisher implemented it, tapping on the screen can load it in a web browser. To avoid it, tapping towards the bottom of the screen will always bring up the navigation. It took me a while to figure this out but tapping towards the bottom always seems to solve the issue of ad popups.

Zinio is similar to Next Issue in terms of displaying content. Even though each magazine may have its own gestures or controls, the same menus are available while reading. You can view a list view of contents as well as a tile view which Next Issue does not have. It makes for a great way to skim an issue and see what interests you first.

Zinio adds one more thing that Next Issue does not have and that's a separate bookmarks section. Bring up the main navigation menu while reading and tap the bookmarks icon to add a bookmark to your bookmarks bar. This will bookmark the page for later reference. The only down side is that it isn't universal. It will save it inside the issue. If Zinio could find a way to aggregate these to where you can view all bookmarks across all subscriptions in one place, that would be a great way to skim for articles across any magazine without having to hunt down the specific magazine first.

When it comes to reading, Zinio provides the best experience.

Newsstand vs. Next Issue vs. Zinio: Content selection and pricing

Newsstand has one of the largest selections of content available and works off individual subscriptions. Almost all magazines are free to download into Newsstand and many have sample issues to download but you'll need to purchase individual issues or a subscription as an in-app purchase. Many times, if you subscribe to a print version, the publisher will have an iPad version that you can log in to as well so you don't have to pay again.

The problem with the Newsstand subscription model is that you'll have to handle them all separately unless you've purchased them all as in-app purchases. Even then it gets a bit tedious to figure out when your subscriptions end and which ones are set to renew.

Next Issue implements a completely different type of subscription model. You can subscribe monthly and access all the different titles they have. A basic subscription of $9.99 per month will get you access to unlimited issues of every monthly magazine they carry. A $14.99 per month subscription will add weekly released magazines to the mix.

One down side to Next Issue is that they don't carry every single magazine. They do have a lot of popular titles but if you read things outside of what they carry, you'll have to go elsewhere to get the content. If you only subscribe to the magazines they carry, it may very well be a good deal. Some of the more popular titles include Allure, People, Self, The New Yorker, Time, Sports Illustrated, Better Homes and Gardens, Wired, Vogue, and more.

Next Issue does offer a 30 day free trial before you'll be billed so it doesn't hurt to try it out before you take the leap. If you read enough of their content it may be cheaper to subscribe and just choose a la carte from either Newsstand or Zinio for the remaining content.

Zinio uses a model very similar to Newsstand in which you subscribe to each magazine individually or purchase single issues as you want. When it comes to pricing, Newsstand and Zinio prices are about the same across the board as I'm assuming they're probably set by the publishers themselves.

When it comes to price, Next Issue will definitely be the best deal as long as the content you want to read is available on their service. If all of it isn't, it's really going to come down to personal reading preferences and what subscriptions you can't live without.

Newsstand vs. Next Issue vs. Zinio: Cross-platform syncing

Newsstand is available on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch running iOS 5.0 or above. Apple also offers automatic downloads across your devices so if you subscribe on one, the content will also be pushed to your other iOS devices automatically.

Next Issue is currently only available on iPad so if you read or plan to read on your iPhone or iPod touch, you may want to rule out Next Issue. If you've got an iPad and an Android device, there is however an Android app available. Depending on what kind you have, it may be worth checking out if your devices are supported.

Zinio is the only app that has not only an iPhone and iPad app but a desktop reader for both PC and Mac as well. And if you've got Android devices, they've got you covered on that front as well.

When it comes to cross-platform syncing Zinio has the most options across the most platforms.

Newsstand vs. Next Issue vs. Zinio: Conclusion

Newsstand, Next Issue, and Zinio are all acceptable ways of viewing and consuming media on your iPad. Depending on what kind of content you read, one may be a better option for you than another.

Newsstand a good choice for those who read only on their iPhones and iPads and have a wide array of content they want access to. Depending on where you live, Newsstand can offer a lot of different titles and tons of publications to choose from. If selection is the most important factor to you and the inconsistent interface isn't a deal breaker, Newsstand is what you'll want to use.

Next Issue's subscription pricing is definitely the way to go for anyone looking for a deal. The only caveat -- and it's a big one -- is that the selection is still very limited. If the magazines you want aren't there, it doesn't matter what the price is. On the other hand, if Next Issue has enough content for you, go for it.

Zinio is best for those who use multiple platforms and want their content every platform, including the desktop.

Overall, this is another case where there's no one good solution. Which one is best for you will depend on which compromises you're willing to make -- interface, content selection, or pricing.

Next Issue is the best choice, unless it doesn't have the magazines you want.

The Next Issue has finally arrived on the iPad, and is set to offer a subscription service that could transform the way you access glossy magazines on iOS. In their press release, Morgan Guenther, CEO of Next Issue Media said:

Right now Apple's method of offering magazine content is through special App Store apps that live in Newsstand and need to be downloaded and subscribed to or purchased on an individual, magazine-by-magazine basis. Zinio has provided a similar single point of discovery, purchase, and reading for a long time now as well. Next Issue, however, is focusing very much on a Netflix-style model, with subscription plans that cover multiple magazines a month.

The Next Issue for iPad provides access to up to 39 titles including Bon Appetit, Brides, Golf Digest, GQ, Self, Vogue and Wired, with more promised to come in the future.

There are two subscription models available. The first comes in at $9.99 a month; this gives you access to monthly and bi-monthly magazines and back issues. The more expensive $14.99 a month subscription includes weekly magazine titles such as Entertainment Weekly, The New Yorker, and a few others. If you are still on the fence, you can sign up for a free 30 day trial.

Unfortunately, it's currently only available in the United States.

The question is, would you be willing to pay a monthly subscription to gain access to regular magazine publications? I would say that if the content available suits your reading habits then it is an excellent proposition. The cost of a printed magazine is nearly the cost of a month's subscription so it does make good economic sense. What do you think?

A conman is ripping off unsuspecting members of the public who are looking to pick up an iPhone, iPad or other Apple products. The conman is operating in the East Yorkshire area of the United Kingdom and claims to be selling Apple's latest products at much reduced prices. The fraudster is approaching potential victims in the street and in exchange for an undisclosed amount of cash, the victim receives a sealed iPhone 4S or iPad package. Only after the conman has fled do they open the box to discover the most expensive potato or water bottle they have ever bought.

Common sense should prevail in situations like this however the idea of picking up an iPhone or iPad for a bargain price is hard for some people to resist. Unfortunately this is exactly why these scams become successful. With any purchases of products outside of a retail environment it always makes sense to at least see the actual product you are buying and see it in operation before parting with any money. Even then there is still a huge risk as you have no warranty and no idea of the origin of the products.

Gameloft and Marvel have announced that they are working together to bring the official Amazing Spider-Man game to the iPhone, iPad and Android devices later this year. The new game will be based on the Sony Pictures film "The Amazing Spider-Man" and should deliver full 3D action, missions, rich gameplay and comprehensive battle systems.

The Amazing Spider-Man will hit movie theaters on July 3rd; so the game should be released round about the same time. We don't have any more details at the moment but when we do we will let you know. This looks like being the big movie for the summer and also it looks like an exciting game for iPhone and iPad too.

Cricket Communications will become the first US carrier to offer the iPhone on a pre-paid plan starting on June 22; the offer will include both the iPhone 4 and the latest iPhone 4S.

As this is a pre-paid contract there is a large upfront fee payable for the iPhone that you choose. The iPhone 4 has only been available in an 8GB version since the launch of the iPhone 4S but Cricket are offering it in a choice of black and white  at an upfront cost of $399.99. The iPhone 4S is the entry level 16GB version again available in black or white with a price point of $499.99.

The contract free pre-paid agreement costs $55 a month and provides unlimited voice minutes and unlimited SMS messages. Data is classed as unlimited but has the dreaded fair usage policy which is set in this instance at 2.3GB a month.

World famous celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay  is planning on using iPads in his restaurants to provide customers with an interactive wine list experience, and later the complete restaurant menu. Ramsay is set to open his first Las Vegas restaurant and it will be the first of his restaurants in the US to utilize the SmartCellar software running on iPads; Ramsay already uses the same software in his UK restaurants.

The new Las Vegas restaurant will get a total of 20 new iPads and they will be handed to guests so they can peruse the vast wine and spirits collection. Guests can then order directly from the SmartCellar app. Ramsay plans to roll out more functionality for the iPads later in the year with the addition of the restaurant’s full menu.

At least the new iPad doesn't have Siri, if Gordon went off on one of his famous four lettered outbursts, who knows what Siri would have made of it all.

During the annual Webbys award show nearly a dozen high profile celebrities, politicians, and people of note gave a huge tribute to the late Apple co-founder, Steve Jobs. The tribute was shown on a huge video screen and simultaneously streamed over the web.

John Hodmgan and Justin Long introduced the segment, paying homage to their long-running series of Get a Mac ads, with Hodgman pretending he'd never heard of any other ads from Apple. They then introduced Richard Dreyfuss, who'd narrated the famous Think Different ad.

Dreyfuss preceded his tribute with the internet equivalent of a political statement, telling Mark Zukerberg and Eric Brin [sic] that if they want to take our privacy away, they should tell us all the private details of their private lives, and if they want to change the world, they should pay for it because it's "theft". He then told the audience he wasn't kidding. He returned to that theme later, casting Google and Facebook alongside politicians, car companies, home renovators, and other high tech companies as part of a world "drowing in fraud". He contrasted them with Steve Jobs, who Dreyfuss said "go it". In a world of senselessly, dishonesty, denial, and ignorance, where words are shared by the good and the bad, Dreyfuss said, the difference with Steve Jobs is that he meant it and did it. Again and again. He finished with the five words -- "exception that proves the rule".

Hodgman and Long returned to introduce the video tribute, which featured former U.S. President Bill Clinton, George Lucas, Vint Cerf, Arianna Huffington, Bono, Buzz Aldrin, Sarah Silverman, a group of school children, former U.S. Vice President and Apple board member Al Gore, Jimmy Fallon, Stephan Colbert, Jon Stewart, and U.S. President Barack Obama all expressing their thanks to Steve Jobs.

Jobs was thanked for a hand held internet, for saving lives with Product Red, for spreading American ingenuity world wide, and for exploring beyond our reach. Al Gore called Jobs "insanely great". Jimmy Fallon said Jobs "made turtle necks sexy again". Stephan Colbert said Jobs thanked Jobs for a "meticulous attention to detail". Barak Obama thanks Jobs for "thinking different", and said that when it came to Jobs only one word was needed -- "amazing".

The Webbys tribute to Steve Jobs is the latest of many that have already seen in the past. We have witnessed similar tributes given at the Grammy's in February and at the 84th Academy Awards ceremony. You can see the video below, unfortunately it is Flash only.

The untethered iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak could be released in a matter of days. Many people have been eagerly awaiting an untethered jailbreak for the latest version of iOS 5.1.1. It has taken a while for it to even look possible never mind become available. Now it appears that the wait may finally be over and it could arrive as early as next week. According to jailbreak developer pod2g.

Update: @MuscleNerd has provided some additional information, which he prefaces by saying is tentative and subject to last minute change:

• the initial 5.1.1 plan used a kernel exploit from @westbaer which unfortunately precluded use in iPod3,1 and iPhone2,1
• @planetbeing stepped up and provided a kernel exploit that covers both of those. Those two JBers are the bomb!
• The 5.1.1 A5 JB is very similar to the A5 5.0.1 JB. @pimskeks has done a tremendous job supporting both 5.0.1 and 5.1.1 in absinthe
• Similar to 5.0.1, there will also be a 5.1.1 CLI "cinject" binary and redsn0w version of the 5.1.1 JB+untether. Absinthe, cinject, and redsn0w will all provide the same JB in different fashions.
• timing is indeterminate. Plans are for this week, but a number of factors can influence that.

There is some good news and bad news with this particular jailbreak. First the bad news -- the new jailbreak tool will still not support the latest 1080p Apple TV. The good news however is pod2g believes that it should work with the new iPad; whichever version you have although testing has not been done on the iPad 3 Global version. The new jailbreak tool hasn't been tested yet on the just released iPad 2 R2 either but again it is believed to work.

I personally can't wait for this to arrive just so I can update some apps that must have iOS 5.1 like the latest versions of iMovie, Pages and Numbers.

Apple looks set to increase the next generation iPhone’s screen size to at least 4-inches according to information coming from people familiar with the situation. According to the sources, Apple has already placed orders for the larger screens from its Asian suppliers and they are bigger than the screens used on the current iPhone.

The rumor states Apple has ordered the larger screens from multiple suppliers, LG, Sharp and Japan Display Inc. Production of the next iPhone is scheduled to start in June with it becoming available at a similar time to last year; sometime in October. We have already heard that Apple is slowing down production of the iPhone 4S in anticipation of the new model iPhone.

The latest rumor does line up with what we heard at the end of last week, namely that if the screen does indeed increase, it would be to a maximum of 4-inches but no larger. We heard Apple hadn't yet decided on a final design, but given both The Wall Street Journal and Reuters are reporting the 4-inch screen size today, that decision could now have been made.

If accurate, several questions remain. Will Apple reduce the size of the current iPhone bezel to allow for a bigger screen, or increase the size of the phone itself, or a bit of both? There's also nothing in these rumors that suggest an aspect ratio change from the current 2:3 to something closer to 16:9, which some other rumors have suggested. That kind of change would be far more problematic for developers than a simple increase in scale.

It would, however, reduce the density of what Apple's has marketed at the Retina display from 326 ppi of the current iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, down to 288 ppi, which is only slightly better than the new iPad's 264. Not only would buttons and other touch targets be physically bigger, its possible the pixels would once again be visible as well.

The alternative, to increase the amount of pixels, would force old apps to be letterboxed (like iPhone apps are on the iPad), and open the door for the creation of "bigger" apps that wouldn't really work on older iPhones. That's a level of fragmentation Apple hasn't been willing to allow thus far.

Until more information surfaces, or until Phil Schiller holds one up on an Apple event stage, we'll simply have to wait and see.

A new, portable fuel cell charger will be available to buy this year and it claims to be able to recharge your iPhone between 10 and 14 times. The small charging device does not need to be recharged by plugging it in; it works with replaceable fuel cell cartridges which can even be carried on planes.

The charging unit and replacement cartridges will be available to buy online from Brookstone and the cartridges can be fully recycled once depleted. There is no pricing information available at this time however the replacement cartridges are thought to cost no more than a few dollars. The system is being tested with users this year and an announcement on retail availability should follow that.

Apple has released information on the security updates that were covered in the recent release of iOS 5.1.1. When it was originally released yesterday, all that we knew was that there were various bug fixes. This update actually covers some important security fixes too for Mobile Safari and WebKit based browsers in general.

• Available for: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation) and later, iPad, iPad 2. Impact: A maliciously crafted website may be able to spoof the address in the location bar.

If you do a lot of web surfing on your iOS device it is definitely worthwhile upgrading to iOS 5.1.1 just for these security updates. Of course if you are running a jailbroken device you will want to still clear for now.

Given that, with iOS 5, Apple introduced over-the-air (OTA) updates to the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, it's interesting that they're still waiting and bundling security patches into larger software updates. OTA updates are done via bit-differential (delta file), and happen on-device and without the need to backup, re-install, and restore, so they're small and incredibly efficient. Apple could choose to push out security updates far more frequently. It's possible they think more frequent updates could annoy users, or their numbers tell them too many users are still updating over USB with iTunes for it to make sense right now. Hopefully, however, they're moving in that direction.

A new jailbreak tweak called Quasar will let you have multiple apps open and running at the same time. If you've always yearned for the opportunity to have your iPad work more like a desktop OS like Windows or OS X, Quasar could be just what you've been looking for.

Quasar is a version 1.0 jailbreak app and to be fair you can tell. It crashed the springboard a few times when I was playing with it and froze a couple of times too. There are weird rotations and portrait bugs as seen in the video are quite annoying too. Having said that, this could potentially be a game changer as and when it's quirks have been ironed out.

Quasar is available through Cydia for $9.99 and is for the iPad only running iOS 5 or higher.

Update The developer has already released an update and fixed some of the bugs that we experienced in the demo video. The orientation and rotation bugs are now fixed along with a few other things too. Good to see such speedy bug fixes!

Samsung and a marketing team working on its behalf were reportly behind a flashmob protest at an Apple Store in Australia. The flashmob took place outside the Apple Store in Sydney; a bus full of protestors all dressed in black left the bus and lined up outside the store's window. They then produced signs that they held up against the windows with the words 'Wake Up' emblazoned across them. The flashmob then chanted 'Wake Up' through the window at Apple's staff and customers.

An Australian blogger just happened to be in the Sydney Apple Store at the time of the flashmob's appearance and managed to capture it on video. Maybe a coincidence or maybe not, who knows but he certainly seemed to capture the action from all angles. This is not the first time that Samsung has targeted Apple's customers with its strange marketing tactics. We have already seen a few adverts which blatantly make fun of iPhone users.

Samsung looks like it will be announcing its latest Galaxy S III Android phone in the next few days. This sort of marketing is its attempt at creating some buzz for the launch, but also at hitting Apple in an area where it may really hurt -- the perception that Apple is "cool". It's a risky gamble. Some Apple or would-be Apple users might have second thoughts and consider Samsung. Others might just think Samsung are a collective bunch of jackasses and want nothing to do with their brand.

Samsung initially became the largest Android manufacturer in the world largely by making products as close to Apple's as possible without being made by Apple. If you wanted Apple but either couldn't get it, or were adverse to getting it, Samsung positioned themselves to be there for you. They brilliantly rode the wave of general smartphone awareness and preconceptions Apple established in the modern market.

Now Samsung has become bolder and are striking out with different devices like the Galaxy Note line, and are trying to distance themselves from Apple, aggressively, with their new marketing.

It's more interesting, more exciting, and more offensive. It's also likely transitional. After "we're just like Apple" and "don't be like Apple", the next phase has to be "we're Samsung" and that will be the one to really watch.

UPDATE: Samsung has denied that they were involved with the flashmob... Anyone taking bets on who else would want to do this? Maybe Greenpeace? They've had protests at an Apple store in London following on their iCloud report; maybe this campaign in Australia is a part of the same movement.

Apple has approved an app called Bluetooth OnOff that simply allows you to turn your Bluetooth connection on and off from your home screen. Apple hasn’t previously permitted any apps that connect and interact to stock settings until now; so this is an interesting development.

The app is extremely simple to use, once installed you have an icon on your home screen. If you click on it, a screen loads with a Bluetooth toggle switch, you can then turn Bluetooth on. If Bluetooth is already turned on then loading the app will give you the option to turn it off. The best way of using the app is to go into the apps settings and turn the OnOff switch to on. This enables you to now toggle Bluetooth On / Off from your home screen with one tap of the app icon.

Shortcuts similar to this were very popular when iOS 5 was initially launched. You could use Safari Bookmarklets to add various on/off settings to your home screen. This type of interaction was broken by Apple with the release of iOS 5.1.

It is very interesting that this app is now available but we don’t know if it is a mistake by Apple. It may be pulled at any minute or it could be a sign that Apple is prepared to allow apps that make its users life easier. Let’s be honest, turning systems settings on and off should not be anywhere near as tedious as it is now.

I hope that Apple finally addresses this problem with iOS 6. In the meantime let’s see if this app stays in the App Store. Maybe we will start to see more approved apps that allow us to toggle Wi-Fi and other system settings too.

The Gadget Show last night let viewers use an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch app to experience a 360 degrees real

UK TV network Channel Five's The Gadget Show aired a 360 degree promo video for its new series which starts next week. The promo which aired last night was the first of its kind ever to be shown. To benefit from the complete experience, users had to watch live TV with an accompanying iOS app running on an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. The app ran in time with the live TV stream and enabled you to look around the studio using the inbuilt gyroscope; giving 360 degree views in real time of the studio.

The technology is certainly something to look out for in the future. Imagine if it could be used for watching sports event; having the ability to pan around the field of play or move your viewpoint to behind a goal. The possibilities are endless and I for one hope that this technology catches on as it is very impressive! If it all sounds a bit confusing, take a look at the video below.

The classic PC game Max Payne is set to arrive on the iOS platform next week, April 12^th to be exact. Rockstar has announced that it will have the original version of Max Payne ready for iOS next week and it will be called Max Payne Mobile.

Rockstar has an excellent reputation for releasing superb iOS ports of games. Last year it released the highly anticipated port of GTA III. The release certainly did not disappoint either in game play or with value for money. We expect the same for Max Payne and those of us who played the original game on PC or later on Xbox, PS2 and Mac can look forward to another great title coming to the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch; roll on April 12th!

Back in December, 2011, Gannett armed their print and broadcast journalists with iPhones and iPads. Now, with over 1,000 iOS devices now in the hands of their print and broadcast journalists, they're combining traditional broadcast equipment with some of the best in mobile technology. At this point, the iPhones and iPads have become an essential requirement in the day-today operations throughout the Gannett organization.

The iTunes App Store plays a significant role here as well with Gannett making use of such applications as Apple's iMovie, the more robust Splice and even working with Qik to offer viewers a multi-stream broadcast during a recent Florida State-Duke basketball game. This is all in addition to using various other tools available to publishers such as Brightcove's mobile upload service that allows for raw or edited footage directly to Brightcove servers and then directly to viewers.

iPhone and iPad accessories play a big role for Gannett as well. With plenty of iOS device accessories out there to make use of, they have no trouble finding additional tools that help the print and broadcast journalists in whatever circumstances they may come across. Be it the need to get a POV shot from a car or bicycle and as noted by Patti Dennis, VP of news at Gannet's KUSA Denver "the story dictates the tool,” and that could mean anything from using a tripod mount to the widely used mCam, made out of aluminum and acts as a mount but also offers a wide-angle/macro lens as well as a microphone for recording audio.

Looking at the Gannett situation a bit, it's easy to see how Apple devices are changing how news is brought to the masses. The next time you're watching the news, those photos, those videos could essentially be coming to you from not only an iOS device but after having been recorded, edited and even uploaded to a server somewhere directly from one. The traditional tools are of course still playing a big role in the day-to-day operations but the landscape has changed now all thanks to Apple.

Reading magazines and newspapers is an amazing experience the new iPad thanks to its retina display. Newsstand is Apple's built-in way or ogranize and manage all your issues and subscriptions, so your magazines and newspapers are where you want, when you want. They'll even download over night so new editions are ready for you right when you wake up!

Note: Newsstand isn't really an app, it's a special folder on your Home screen, and magazines and newspapers are actually apps just like any other app or game. Newsstand just makes it easier to find them and keep them organized.

There are actually two ways to get magazines and newspapers onto your new iPad.

How to get magazines and newspapers from within Newsstand

1. Tap the Newsstand app on your homescreen.
2. You'll be presented with a virtual bookshelf. This is where your subscriptions will show up.
3. To start subscribing tap the Store icon in the top right corner of Newsstand.
4. Browse and download magazine and book apps just as you would any other app. If you're brand new to the iPad, here's how

How to get magazines and newspapers from the App Store

1. Launch the App Store.
2. Tap the Categories tab on the bottom.
3. Now tap on Newsstand

Regardless what method you use, you'll still end up in the same place. Now we can browse for things we want to subscribe to and start filling up our shelves.

2. Browse all the offerings in Newsstand in one of two ways - at the top you can choose between featured and release date.

3. Once you've found something you'd like to subscribe to, you can check out the rates by scrolling down a bit. While most items are free to download, you'll need to purchase a subscription as an in-app purchase. Some publications also let you purchase individual issues as well (we'll cover that in a minute).

4. To subscribe, just tap the price underneath the cover picture.

5. The button will turn into an "Install App" button. Tap it once more.

6. You'll be prompted to enter your iTunes password. Click Ok and your subscription will start to download to Newsstand.

How to get a subscription with an in-app purchase

1. Tap on the publication you just downloaded to Newsstand in order to open it.
2. Every publication is a bit different but you should see a section where you can subscribe or purchase individual issues if they offer it.
3. Choose the subscription or issue you'd like and tap the price just as you did previously to install the publication.
4. Enter your iTunes password if prompted and you're done.

If you subscribed for a certain time duration, Newsstand should automatically download your new issues as soon as they're available. You can also enable automatic downloads in order to sync your subscriptions across all your devices.

Enabling automatic downloads

If you've got multiple iOS devices, namely an iPad and and iPhone or iPod touch - you'll be able to access your subscriptions on both without purchasing them again as long as you're signed into the same iTunes account on both.

1. From the homescreen of your iPad, tap your Settings icon.
2. Now tap Store.

3. From here you can choose to turn automatic downloads on for music, apps, books, and any magazines you are subscribed to. Just toggle them on or off for the items you'd like to sync across your devices.

TV news network Al-Jazeera will air a documentary tonight that has been filmed entirely with an iPhone. The documentary was filmed by an undercover journalist using just an iPhone as the use of a large camera would have been a major security risk. The documentary called “Syria: Songs of Defiance” follows an anonymous journalist on a journey amongst the uprising in Syria.

The model of iPhone has not been revealed although we would have to assume that it would be at least an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S. These models do have incredible optics and can produce some excellent quality video. The fact that a journalist can now use a device as small and portable as an iPhone to shoot broadcast quality video is highly impressive!

EA has severely underestimated the popularity of any game that involves characters and voices from the hugely popular animated TV series The Simpsons. After releasing its latest game called The Simpsons: Tapped Out, it has now embarrassingly had to remove it from the App Store as its servers are being slammed and user experience is being badly affected.

The game is still playable if you already managed to grab it; but it is no longer listed in the App Store. The game involves rebuilding Homer’s home town of Springfield after a nuclear explosion. Players rebuild the city and gain game currency which is measured in donuts by completing tasks along the way; players can also buy donuts through in-app purchase to advance more quickly through the game.

EA hasn’t said when the game will be back in the App Store but we will keep an eye out for it and let you know as soon as it does!

Square is already well known for the way it brought credit card transactions into the hands of small businesses and sole traders. Now it has gone one step further and announced its latest creation which is a register app for the iPad. The new app aims to replace a traditional POS (point of sale) cash register with an iPad.

The app which is called Square Register will be offered for free and Square will make its money through its existing revenue stream of taking  2.75% of every credit card transaction made using its service. The app also contains a highly impressive analytics application which will allow any small business to assess sales data and then tailor all aspects of their business to maximise sales.

If you are feeling nostalgic or just have some time to kill, you can now re-live every single advert that Apple has made for its iPhone device.  The iPhone was first introduced back in 2007 and the first advert to hit our screens was called “Hello”. It made its first appearance during the night of the  Oscars and featured scenes with famous actors all on the phone. Apple has continued to produce some great ads for the iPhone and that number has now reached a staggering 84 to date.
