OtterBox has unveiled its latest case offering for the iPhone 15, made with a new material that “feels like leather but made from nopal cactus.”

The new OtterBox Symmetry Series Cactus Leather range looks to provide iPhone users with an alternative to Apple’s official FineWoven case that is “durable, cruelty-free and sustainable.”

The Cactus Leather range uses a material called Desserto made by Adriano di Marti, and is a leather-alternative made from cactus, which is exclusive to OtterBox. This material is the “world's first highly sustainable and environmentally friendly organic material made of Nopal cactus. This patented plant-based, soft touch material is used in clothing, footwear, purses and now OtterBox mobile accessories.”

Apple unveiled FineWoven accessories alongside the launch of the iPhone 15 in September last year, and the material has since come under large scrutiny due to its lack of durability which causes the FineWoven material to scratch incredibly easily. In our FineWoven review, iMore Editor-in-Chief Gerald Lynch wrote, “But the material at the heart of the FineWoven design is so prone to scratches and stains, and the USB-C cutout so narrow, that it’s simply impossible to recommend.”

The main benefit of FineWoven is the lack of animal by-products, which is part of Apple’s move to a carbon-neutral future. Now, for the eco-conscious among us, OtterBox are providing a fantastic alternative that is likely to provide the durability we expect from a case brand with such an established name.

OtterBox Folding Wireless Power Bank: What's good

The OtterBox Folding Wireless Power Bank is unique in that it can charge your iPhone at unlimited angles. The friction hinge means that you can place your iPhone straight up at a 90° angle, totally flat, or anywhere in between. This product is aimed at gamers because of that flexibility, but it's great for anyone.

Because the surface is grippy, you don't have to worry about the iPhone sliding off. The dual-coil design means that you can place your iPhone vertically or horizontally. A gold ring in the center helps make sure you place the iPhone correctly. I found that wireless charging works just as well with or without an iPhone case.

The 10,000mAh battery could potentially give you up to 25 hours extra battery life (testing on the iPhone 12), though in my testing, I was able to get just about one full charge on my iPhone 13 Pro. Using wireless charging, the power output is 10W. I found that it charged my iPhone at about the same speed as Apple's MagSafe charger.

But if you use a power cable and the USB-C or USB-A port, the power output is 18W. Charge up the OtterBox Folding Wireless Power Bank via the USB-C port, using the included USB-A to USB-C cable; it charges at 15W. The LED lights along the side let you know how much power is left in the power bank. Like all OtterBox products, it has a limited lifetime warranty.

OtterBox Folding Wireless Power Bank: What's not good

I was able to get about one full charge out of the OtterBox Folding Wireless Power Bank before it ran out of juice. That's a little less than claimed, but then, testing was done on an iPhone 12, and I have an iPhone 13 Pro. What bothered me more is that it doesn't really work while it's plugged in. Sure, you buy a power bank to use it NOT plugged in, but I'd still expect to have the option to use it either way.

Finally, it's pretty pricey, especially considering that it doesn't come with the wall charger. You're paying for that flexible angle use.

OtterBox Folding Wireless Power Bank: Competition

The Satechi Quatro Wireless Power Bank costs even more, but it actually lets you charge your iPhone, Apple Watch (via the integrated charging puck), and AirPods wirelessly plus a wired fourth device at once. However, it doesn't serve as a stand like the OtterBox Folding Wireless Power Bank does.

A totally different option is the RAVPower Magnetic Wireless Power Bank. This diminutive charger snaps onto the back of your iPhone 12 or iPhone 13 series handset for charging on the go. Again, this one isn't a stand.

The ESR Lift Wireless Charging Stand is an inexpensive charging stand for your iPhone. But it's not a power bank; it must be plugged into the wall to use.

The OtterBox Symmetry Series is a classic OtterBox design that has been around now for a few years. They create a new line and new colorways for every new iPhone, however, and I'm loving the designs they've created for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The Rock Candy Blue case is a vivid complement to my Pacific Blue iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Of course, no matter what color it is, every Symmetry Case comes with the military-grade, drop-proof protection that we've come to expect from OtterBox. I have tested this out extensively (although not on purpose, really), and it has held up no matter how hard I dropped it. In fact, after two months of heavy and clumsy usage, the case looks like it just came out of the box.

I've used the Symmetry Series case on my iPhone 12 Pro Max long enough now to find a few small disadvantages as well. I'll go into all of the pros and cons in this review.

A rainbow of vibrant options

OtterBox Symmetry Series: What I like

Bold, bright, and stylish, the OtterBox Symmetry series looks pretty dang good on the iPhone 12 Pro Max, especially the Pacific Blue colorway. In fact, that's one of the things I enjoy most about the Symmetry Series; the model offers loads of different color and style choices, from glittery clear cases to graphic patterns and flat matte colors. It's rare to see this many fun colors on a rugged protective case like this one.

And rugged it is, despite the sleek look. While this is certainly not an ultra-thin case as some of the OtterBox marketing seems to suggest, the Symmetry Case is definitely slimmer than other heavy-duty cases like the OtterBox Defender Series or the FRĒ by LifeProof. Regardless of its thinner profile, the Symmetry case has already held up beautifully after multiple hard drops and falls over the past few weeks. I never go more than a few days without dropping my phone, so I put this case through its paces. There's not a single mark or scratch to be seen on the Symmetry Case or my iPhone, even after a particularly rough drop onto concrete.

I also appreciate the antimicrobial coating since everyone knows that cellphones are hot spots for bacterial growth. Although it doesn't protect against viruses, at least I know that there's no bacteria living and growing on this case. Finally, the Symmetry Case is lightweight despite its proven durability, and the rubberized grippy edges make it less likely to drop out of my buttery fingers.

Did you say slim?

OtterBox Symmetry Series: What I don't like

After reading about how slim it was online, I was a bit surprised to find that the Symmetry Series case is not actually that thin. I mean, it's thin compared to the Defender Series for sure, but it's not exactly what I would define as a 'slim' case. The border extends almost five millimeters outside the edge of the phone, so it still has some girth to it. I suppose this is necessary to the high level of protection that OtterBox provides, so I certainly don't mind overmuch.

The case was not exactly easy to install and remove, either. Don't get me wrong; once the case is on the iPhone 12 Pro Max, it melds with the handset in a fit so snug they become one well-protected unit. But that snug fit did require quite a bit of effort, turning, pressing, and practically forcing the iPhone into the case. It's not super easy to pry off either, so I would recommend making this case a long-term choice.

The competition

Most cases that offer the level of protection that OtterBox provides are priced much higher. Urban Armor Gear comes in at about the same price point, however, and they have a line of rugged cases that are industrial in both look and feel. One of their slimmer options that is a little more sleek and simple like the Symmetry Series is the UAG Civilian Case. This one has a simple outline with a few interesting color options. While the Civilian Case has fewer colors to choose from than the Symmetry Series, it offers the same level of protection at the same price.

OtterBox Symmetry Series: Should you buy

You like bright colors and fun prints.

No other rugged protective case on the market offers so many fun colors, interesting patterns, and unique design options. The Symmetry case comes in all sorts of styles, and you can even order one with a built-in PopSocket if you like.

You're rough on your iPhone.

As expected with any OtterBox case, the Symmetry Series will protect your iPhone no matter where or how hard you drop it. Concrete is no match for this tough little case.

You're worried about germs.

The antimicrobial coating on this case is the icing on the cake. Along with world-class drop protection, you can expect germ protection as well.

You were expecting an ultra-thin case.

The Symmetry Series is slimmer than many rugged cases, but it is not a very thin case overall.

You want to change cases often.

Since it takes some considerable effort to install and remove the Symmetry case, be aware that it works better as a long-term iPhone case.

The Symmetry Series by OtterBox offers excellent protection, lots of fun colorways, and an antimicrobial coating in a sleek, modern design. It looks beautiful on the iPhone 12 Pro Max. I like the vivid Rock Candy Blue for my Pacific Blue iPhone, but there are scores of other designs and patterns to choose from in this series. Although it's not an ultra-slim case, it has a pretty sleek design for offering rugged, military-grade protection. You can also count on the antimicrobial coating to keep the case free of yucky germs.

I've been using the Otter + Pop Symmetry Series Clear Case now for several weeks, and I've put it through the paces, even a few significant accidental drops. This review details my experience with the case, both the positive points and a couple of less favorable observations.

One-handed protection

Otter + Pop Symmetry Clear Case: What I like

Although I've been using OtterBox cases for years, this was my first experience with the famous PopSocket contraption, and I gotta say, it's a good match. This has all the heavy-duty protection we've come to expect from OtterBox alongside the versatile convenience of PopSocket. I've always seen these PopSockets around, but I didn't realize how much they would come in handy on a big phone like the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Texting, taking selfies, and propping up the iPhone are all made infinitely easier with the PopSocket. Because of the hugeness of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, it's almost impossible to text one-handed, and it's awkward to take good selfies. The PopSocket changes all that, making all one-handed actions smoother and less prone to drops. It also works as a handy stand for watching videos! When I'm done with it, I can pop the PopSocket back down into the case where it lays almost flat.

Besides the PopSocket, the OtterBox Symmetry brings all the protection and durability I love about this brand. I'm a serial breaker of iPhones, so a case like this is necessary for me. In fact, the day after I slipped my new iPhone 12 Pro Max into this case, I dropped it down an entire flight of concrete stairs. I can hear you cringing, but both the iPhone and the case were in perfect condition despite the horrifying clatter down the stairs. The OtterBox case has a tiny abrasion on one corner, but it's barely noticeable unless you inspect it closely. I call that a protection job well done.

Unlike the other Otter+Pop collaborative case designs, this is the only one that's totally clear from all angles. Since I enjoy the sleek look and Pacific Blue shade of my iPhone, the clear case shows it off to the best advantage. Even the rubberized bumpers are clear, so you can fully enjoy the iPhone's good looks through the case. The fact that you can pick and choose different PopSocket colors and patterns to customize the case is just icing on the cake.

Otter + Pop Symmetry Clear Case: What I don't like

I've used several OtterBox case models over the years, but this is my first time with the Symmetry case. After reading about it on the website, I was expecting a slimmer case. The description describes it as having a "thin profile," but I found it to be a bit bulky, as are most OtterBox cases. Granted, I need a substantial, highly protective case due to my proclivity for accidents, but this is not what I would describe as a thin case. It's a bit slimmer than the Defender Series, certainly, but not as slim as the Figura or the Strada series.

Another thing I noticed was that the clear PopSocket has a tendency to become scratched very quickly. After a few weeks of use, the surface of the PopSocket started showing fine lines and scratches. I haven't used any of the cute colors that PopSocket makes, so this might just be a problem with the clear PopSocket. I might be investing in some new PopSocket colors soon, however, since I don't like seeing those little scratches on the clear surface. It's important to note that the rest of the clear OtterBox case does not scratch easily, only the PopSocket itself. I suppose this could easily be solved by replacing the PopSocket every so often, which is probably the intention of this case design anyhow.

The competition

The Otter + Pop Case is a unique product. There isn't anything else like it, so you could say it has no competition. The closest comparable product would be the PopGrip slide - a PopSocket on a clip that will slip on or off your iPhone case. This one is made for the Apple Silicone case, but there is also an adjustable version that will fit most any other case. In my opinion, this solution is just not as elegant as the PopSocket that's built right into the OtterBox case, but it might work if you don't want to shell out for OtterBox prices.

OtterBox does offer other PopSocket cases besides the Symmetry. Look into the Otter + Pop Figura case for a slightly slimmer and more colorful case.

Otter + Pop Symmetry Clear Case: Should you buy?

You like to use your iPhone one-handed.

This case has made it possible for me to text and take photos one-handed, which was previously very difficult with the big iPhone 12 Pro Max. It does add convenience and reliability to the case.

You appreciate a built-in stand.

Plenty of cases offer built-in stands, but they are usually ugly and easily breakable. The PopSocket is a cute solution that is also durable and easy to switch out.

You are rough on your phones.

If there's one thing you can guarantee with an OtterBox case, it's heavy-duty protection. Despite its clear, minimal appearance, the transparent Symmetry case offers drop protection up to three times the military-grade standard.

You like to customize your own look.

I haven't played around with different colors and patterns yet, but PopSocket offers hundreds of different PopSocket designs that you can mix and match with your Otter + Pop case. You can even custom-print one with your own name, so it's a fully customizable case that you can continue to change around long after you buy the case.

You want a super slim case.

Even though the OtterBox Symmetry case claims to have a thin profile, it was not a very thin case, in my opinion. That's okay with me because I need the protection, but a slim case, it is not.

You want to stick with a clear PopSocket.

The clear PopSocket that this case comes with is prone to fine scratches and lines on its surface. I will probably be changing it out soon for another color or pattern that's more durable with long use.

The Otter+Pop Symmetry Series Clear Case is an all-around excellent case for both protection and convenience. The PopSocket will instantly make your iPhone more versatile for one-handed texting and selfies, along with hands-free viewing. When it's not in use, the PopSocket can be collapsed into the case for a nearly flat profile. The PopSocket can also be customized and switched out to match your personality or your outfit!

As with any OtterBox Symmetry case, the clear version provides rugged protection against drops and rough treatment. This has been borne out in my testing, having dropped my phone down a flight of stairs in the Otter+Pop Symmetry Clear Case without a scratch or dent to be seen. There was a tiny abrasion on the corner of the case after the fall, but other than that, it held up fine to a truly cringe-worthy tumble down the stairs. I do not doubt that my iPhone 12 Pro Max will be perfectly protected in this case, no matter what I put it through.

Overall, the combination of OtterBox and PopSocket is a winner, and I will keep this case on my iPhone for a long time to come. After all, if I get bored with its appearance, I can just change out the PopSocket!

When you hear "OtterBox," you probably think of sturdy and durable cases first. That's understandable — after all, the rugged Defender case is something for which the brand is most well-known. But did you know that it is expanding even more into power accessories?

OtterBox isn't new to the mobile power game. In fact, a few months ago, they came out with the OtterSpot Wireless Charging System, which we gave a glowing review. But the company has just released a new portfolio of premium power products, and I got a few to test out. Today, we're going to dive in with the Fast Charge Power Bank and Fast Charge Lighting to USB-C Cable.

Quality durability while rapidly charging your devices

OtterBox Fast Charge Standard Power Bank and Lightning to USB-C Premium Cable: Features

OtterBox is a brand that is well known for robust and durable products, and that's precisely what you're getting here with the new line of power products. Since I'm discussing two products here, I'll go over the features separately.

The Fast Charge Power Bank from OtterBox comes in three power capacities: 10000mAh, 15000mAh, or 20000mAh. I was sent the 20000mAh version, so it will take a few hours to charge completely once it's empty. Like any other battery pack, you should fully charge it before using it.

The exterior of the Fast Charge Power Bank has a leather-like appearance and feel, with a gold band in the middle. In the top half, you have the OtterBox logo embossed in the center, and in the bottom half (from the gold line) is a series of embossed diagonal (left to right) lines. This gives the battery pack a unique and distinguished aesthetic that pairs nicely with the brushed metal edges. Overall, the 20000mAh battery is quite hefty, as it clocks in at 0.96 pounds (the 10000mAh and 15000mAh are around 0.53 and 0.73, respectively) and the physical size is 6.26-by-3.08-by-0.92 inches (the other two are physically smaller at 5.55-by-2.87-by-0.64 and 0.87 inches, respectively).

With the Fast Charge Power Bank, you have two ports at the bottom: one USB-C and one USB-A. The USB-C port can be used for both input and output. When using this battery pack, both ports output at 18W instead of the standard 5W charging like other battery packs or adapters, but only the USB-C port can do Fast Charge. You should get around 50% charge in about 30 minutes, and two devices can charge up simultaneously.

The Lighting to USB-C Fast Charge Premium Cable is proving to be one of the most durable cables I have owned so far. I was sent the 1-meter length cable in Glamour Black, but it also comes in Cloud Sky White, Silver Dust, and Shimmer Rose Pink color options for the 1-meter. You can get a 2-meter length Premium Lightning to USB-C cable as well, but that one only comes in the white and black color options.

The cable itself is made with braided nylon, so you won't get tangles or fraying while using it. It also has its own bit of heft, similar to the battery pack, and it definitely feels durable and sturdy. Both ends are reinforced for strain relief, and they have a sleek, brushed aluminum metal finish with a gold band. OtterBox has put these cables through rigorous testing, and this one should last for up to 10,000 uses, including a lot of bending and flexing.

The Premium version of the cable also features a soft-touch silicone cable organizer wrap that helps keep the cable neat and tidy while traveling. This wrap has a flexible button that you simply slide through one of two slits when rolling up your cable into a coil, or however you usually do it. It's nice and helpful if you like to organize, but since it's silicone, dirt and scuffs may show up on it, though you can easily wipe it away.

The best part about the Lightning to USB-C Fast Charge cable is that it's up to 4x faster than regular cables. That's because it has 60W output via Power Delivery, while most cables are 15W. If you also plug your iPhone into your USB-C-equipped computer, this cable has a data transfer rate of 480 Mbps.

I've used the Fast Charge Power Bank and the Lightning to USB-C Fast Charge Premium Cable with my iPhone 11 Pro, and together, I got a very rapid charge. I had my iPhone 11 Pro at 16% battery, and in 1.5-hours, I was back up at 95% on my iPhone. It does appear that once your device is in the 90 percentile, the charging slows down a bit, but I believe that's due to Apple's optimized battery charging to improve your device's lifespan.

It does appear that when you charge two devices simultaneously, the output is evenly distributed. So if you need to Fast Charge a device, you will want only to use the USB-C output and leave the USB-A port empty.

Charging power that will last a long time

I have a lot of power banks, but I don't feel comfortable throwing them around without scuffing them up. However, the OtterBox one is different — the exterior of it has a rugged feel, so I am comfortable if I end up dropping this one because it feels durable. And that distinctive exterior doesn't show scratches or scuffs, so even if you do, no one will ever know. I also appreciate the Fast Charge capabilities, since you spend less time worrying about how long it will be until you can take the plug out of your phone.

The Lighting to USB-C Fast Charge Premium Cable is also great to have around because it will withstand bending and flexing a lot better than other cables, especially Apple's own Lightning cables. The braided nylon is tough, and both ends are also reinforced, making fraying impossible. I also appreciate having the premium cable organizer wrap because it keeps the cable neat and tidy in my tech bag.

When I use them together, I love that I can have an almost-dead iPhone 11 Pro back up to the 90 percentile battery in a little over an hour.

The power bank packs in a lot of power but a lot of weight too

OtterBox Fast Charge Standard Power Bank and Lightning to USB-C Premium Cable: What I Don't Like

The biggest issue I have with the Fast Charge Power Bank is that it is one of the heftier battery packs I own. According to the OtterBox website, it is almost an entire pound at 0.96 pounds, which can definitely weigh down your bag.

And if you're looking for a battery pack that also has wireless charging, this one won't have it. You'll need the Fast Charge Qi Wireless Power Bank instead, which comes in 10000mAh or 15000mAh capacities and costs $40 and $50, respectively.

The only thing I don't like about the Premium Fast Charge Lightning to USB-C cable is that the silicone organizer wrap is silicone, so it may be prone to catching on to lint and other debris. Fortunately, you just wipe it down to clean.

Heavy duty fast charging

If you're looking for a heavy-duty battery pack that should withstand anything you throw at it, then the OtterBox Fast Charge Standard Power Bank is a great option. It comes in three power capacities for your needs, has USB-C Fast Charging and USB-A at 18W each, and you can charge two devices simultaneously. The only drawbacks are that the 20000mAh is a bit on the heavier side, and there's no wireless charging on this unit.

The Lightning to USB-C Fast Charge Premium Cable is a great cable to pick up for those who don't want a cable that wears out in just a few months. It's tough, especially with the reinforced ends, and the silicone cable wrap keeps it neat and tidy in your bag, though it may attract some lint that can be wiped away easily. And that 60W output is nothing to scoff at.

Unveiled today, January 6 at Pepcom, the new Amplify Glass Anti-Microbial was developed in partnership with Corning. A press release states:

The Amplify screen protector has up to five-times greater scratch resistance than other glass protection. More importantly, the embedded anti-microbial technology means that as of right now, its the only EPA-registered smartphone screen protector on the market.

The technology is based around ionic silver, embedded in the glass of the screen protector. This results in long-lasting protection from germs that doesn't degrade over time. And since it's embedded in the glass, there's no compromise to protection either.

OtterBox cases are known for having excellent smartphone protection, and PopSockets PopGrips are known for giving you a secure grip on your phone. The two companies have collaborated on several cases, and the latest is the slim and trim Figura Series. The slim form factor of the case slides easily into your pocket or bag, while the built-in PopSockets PopGrip helps prevent you from dropping your phone. The PopGrip also makes a convenient kickstand for watching videos.

While this isn't the first collaboration between OtterBox and PopSockets, it is the one with the slimmest form factor. While I wouldn't call it an ultra-slim case, it's certainly slimmer than most of OtterBox's offerings. This means it won't be quite as protective as some of their other cases, but there is always a trade-off between thinness and protection.

The slim case is constructed from a soft, flexible, matte rubber material. It feels pleasant to the touch and is neither grippy nor slippery. There is a "belly button" dock on the back where the PopSockets PopGrip attaches. Since you screw the PopGrip on rather than attaching it with adhesive, it's quite secure. Plus, you can easily swap out your PopGrip with others in order to create different looks.

I think most people know about PopSockets by now, but in case you don't, it's a round phone grip on the back of your phone. It gives you something to hold onto when using your phone. It's especially useful for steadying the hand to take photos.

The PopGrip collapses to lay flat when not in use, but not quite flat enough for wireless charging to work with it on. I tested it with three different wireless chargers and the case alone is wireless charging compatible. But wireless charging did not work for me with the PopGrip in place.

The edges of the case surrounding the screen are raised high enough for face-down screen protection while allowing plenty of room for a screen protector. The button covers for the Sleep/Wake and volume buttons work fine. The precision camera cutout as well as generous cutouts for the mute switch, speakers, and Lightning port maintain expected functionality.

Branding on the case included an embossed OTTERBOX along one side and MADE FOR POPSOCKETS around the PopGrip dock, which you can only see when the PopGrip is extended. When you remove the PopGrip, the case looks incomplete, so I wouldn't use this case without a PopGrip attached.

The Otter + Pop Figura Series iPhone Case is only made for the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max at this time. Choose from four colors: Black, Flying High (periwinkle blue), Lavender Sour (as seen in my photos), and Melon Twist (a peachy melon shade).

Convenient

Otter + Pop Figura Series iPhone Case: What I like

I find the Otter + Pop Figura Series iPhone Case extremely comfortable to use. The PopGrip may look a little odd to someone who isn't used to it, but it just feels right immediately. Whether I'm texing or extending my arm to take a group selfie, the PopGrip gives me a satisfying grip on my iPhone.

I trust the OtterBox name, and I like the new slimmer form factor here. I don't like to use a bulky case and won't do so unless I've used up all of my AppleCare+ incidents. The Figura, while not ultra-slim, is certainly slim enough to feel satisfactory for me.

Lack of wireless convenience

Otter + Pop Figura Series iPhone Case: What I don't like

OtterBox states that the case is wireless charging compatible, which is technically true. The case alone certainly is. However, OtterBox also states that you may have to remove the PopGrip, which I definitely needed to do. I tested it with three different wireless chargers and all of them worked with the Figura case only if the PopGrip was removed. The purpose of wireless charging is to be quick and easy, and if you have to remove the PopGrip you may as well just be plugging in your iPhone to charge anyway.

Grip convenience

OtterBox and PopSockets' latest collaboration is a best-of-both-worlds protective slim case with a built-in PopGrip dock. You can easily swap out the included PopGrip with others (sold separately) to create different looks for your case. The case itself is a soft rubber that is easy to put on and take off. Note that wireless charging only worked for me with the PopGrip removed.

The Otterbox Symmetry case is a solid, protective case. It's a medium weight case; it's pretty slim for a case that offers this much protection. When you look at the camera cutout, you can see how thick the case is, particularly towards the middle of the case, but it doesn't feel overly bulky in the hand. It still fits into pockets easily. There are three cutouts on the bottom of the case for the Lightning port and speakers. There's a cutout for the mute switch and nice clicks button covers for all the buttons.

The back of the case is a hard plastic while the edges are more rubbery. The case is pretty easy to put on and take off. Otterbox is engraved on the back of the case as well as along one side. The edge of the case comes up well over the screen, which offers your phone's screen some protection when you place it facedown.

The back of the case has a hole with the words "Made for PopSockets" engraved around it. You really wouldn't want to use the case without any PopSocket in place; it would look weird. The case comes with one PopGrip, but you can buy more and swap them out as you like. Mine, in the color Mauveolous, came with a matching PopSocket PopGrip, but I also got a cute llama one which you see in my photos. To remove the PopGrip, you just press and twist, much like opening a medication bottle. Once your PopGrip is in place, it feels very secure, probably even more secure than the stick-on kind. When you press it down, it's nearly flush with the with case and out of the way.

This case is a winner. My iPhone feels securely protected, yet it's not too bulky for someone like me who prefers thinner cases. I find I love the PopGrip, it does make taking photos and even just texting more comfortable since you don't have to make that "pinkie shelf" in order to hold your phone.

I love the color choices and particularly the wide range of PopGrips from which to choose. You could change the PopGrips out to suit your outfit or your mood each day.

You really can't use this case without a PopGrip. I mean, technically you can, but it looks odd without it. So you're committed to having that PopGrip on there all the time.

Wireless charging compatibility with the Otter + Pop is mixed. In our testing, we could successfully charge an iPhone XS with the case and PopGrip on on some wireless charging pads, but not others. Brand quality doesn't seem to be the deciding factor, either.

Commuter Series Case for iPhone: What I like

The Commuter Series cases are constructed with two layers. There is a soft inner synthetic rubber layer and a hard outer polycarbonate shell to absorb and deflect impacts. The exposed part of the rubber gives the case a bit of grippiness so hopefully, you don't drop the phone at all. If you do drop it, however, you're protected by Otterbox's "certified drop protection." Otterbox did over two dozen different tests on their products, such as drop, abrasion, thermal shock, Purell, jeans pocket, and many more. Otterbox has spent over 200 hours performing these tests, and holds over 300 patents.

The case fits the iPhone perfectly, with precision cutouts for the camera, mute switch, Lightning port, and camera. There is also a cutout for the Apple logo so you can be sure that everyone will know what brand of phone your are carrying. Otterbox's logo is engraved in the plastic outer shell. The Lightning port is has a cover that keeps dust out while you use the phone but that you can easily pop open for charging.

You can create your own look by mixing and matching the inner and outer layers. Each is available in a handful of different colors.

Not the most attractive case

Commuter Series Case for iPhone: What I don't like

While I appreciate the nice colors and ability to mix and match them, this still isn't what I'd call an attractive case. If I were a business person, I'd probably prefer something a bit more professional-looking. My own personal tastes run a bit more feminine than this case. Still, the case is far from ugly, and if you don't mind the look of plastic, this is a great option for you.

There is always a trade-off between protection and bulk. This one falls somewhere in the middle, bulk wise, and on the higher end of protection.

This is one of those cases that leans more towards function than fashion. If you're looking for a highly protective heavy-duty case that isn't hugely bulky, this is a fantastic option for you.

Whenever I've used flip cases, the advantage of a screen cover, and in many cases storage for credit cards, has been overshadowed by their clumsy hinges and lack of awareness for how people actually use their phones. Not so with the OtterBox Strada folio.

It's impressively designed, with high-quality leather on the outside and a thick plastic that holds the iPhone firmly in place. More importantly, it keeps your cars collected while still allowing you to fully use your iPhone, even one-handed.

The outside

The Strada folio comes in three colors: saddle brown (seen here), "Chic" burgundy, and "Minimal" black. The leather, which is stitched to the plastic frame below, is rigid but of high quality, and has proven scratch-resistant throughout my time with it.

All of the iPhone's ports are accessible when the phone is docked in the shell, but for the mute switch, which can be activated when the folio is opened.

The folio stays closed with a magnetic latch, one of the more considerate I've seen on such a case. That is because, when the screen cover is bent backwards while the phone is in use, the magnet has the same attraction to the back portion of the case, keeping it from flopping around.

The right side power button is reinforced and easy to press; less so are the volume buttons, which are barely perceptible along the leather hinge. And while there's no way to slide-to-answer a phone call without opening the case, the rest of the conversation can be had with the case closed, as the headpiece has the requisite opening.

The inside

Once your iPhone is docked, it's pretty well protected inside the plastic shell. By virtue of its folio nature, there is no concern with keeping the case's plastic borders thin.

On the inside of the flap, there's a slot for a single credit card or three business cards. That improves your chances of being able to take just your phone with you while on the town — especially if you have Apple Pay loaded on the iPhone itself.

Changing my mind

I'm not committing to using a folio case full-time, but that the OtterBox Strada has been covering my iPhone 6s for four days now is a testament to its quality and design.

OtterBox kicked off a new series of iPhone 6 cases this week called Resurgence, which includes an embedded battery. OtterBox is one of the leading brands when it comes to reliable protection for iPhones and iPads, so it comes at no surprise that the OtterBox Defender for the iPhone 5 offers phenomenal, high-quality protection to your precious device. OtterBox offers many different cases for the iPhone 5 (and other devices), but the Defender Series is the most robust of them all. OtterBox claims that the Defender protects your iPhone against drops, shocks, dust, and scratches with its three layers of protection and built-in screen protector.

Because of the complexity of this case, putting on the OtterBox Defender is a bit of a chore. I struggle most with opening the case since it has at least six different clasps to lock the case in place. But once you get through that, putting on the case is pretty easy.

Since the screen protector is built into the case, you'll want to make sure that the inside of it is dust and lint free. If it is, the fit is so perfect that you won't even notice that there's a screen protector. This is a lot coming from someone who's very anti-screen-protectors. I hate them and they way they feel, but the built-in protector in OtterBox Defender is completely invisible and feels like glass. I'm seriously impressed.

Although the OtterBox Defender for iPhone 5 is very protective, it does not protect against everything, namely water. It will definitely keep your phone protected from splashes or quick phone calls in the rain, but don't expect to be able to retrieve an undamaged iPhone that's been dropped in the lake... or toilet.

The areas of the iPhone 5 that are not protected by the OtterBox defender are the speaker, mic, and camera. The volume switch, lightning connector, and headphone jack all feature flaps of rubber that provide protection when not in use, yet give easy access when it's time to use them. It will appear that the Apple symbol on the back of the iPhone 5 also isn't protected, but it is; there is a cutout in the case, but it is covered with the same invisible material used for the screen protector.

One of the downsides of super protective cases is that they add a considerable amount of bulk and the OtterBox Defender is no exception. But if your iPhone 5 is at risk of experiencing long falls and drops, the extra bulk is a necessary trade-off. I'd much rather have a bulky phone that worked, than a thin one with a shattered screen. I can say from experience that the OtterBox will protect your phone against all sort of gadget-enemies including toddlers, toy boxes, and baby drool.

Like Chris Oldroyd, my most used iPhone and iPad accessories consists of a very short list. There are only have a few that I regularly used during the past year. The Otter Box Commuter Series for iPad may just be the ultimate in rugged cases. I know, that is a bold statement, but I am really that impressed. What separates this case from the competition is that is clearly engineered by people who like their iPads and want them protected. You get a low-profile case with a lot of extras. Like many iPad cases on the market, the Commuter is a three-layered system...

• Layer 1:  Self-adhering clear protective film (Cleaning cloth and installation card included)
• Layer 2:  Durable silicone mid-layer
• Layer 3:  One piece custom molded polycarbonate shell

Upon removing the case from its packaging, you are presented with a flip-out installation guide that includes your cleaning cloth, screen protector and applicator. After reading the instructions (yes, believe it or not there is a RIGHT way to put this thing on) I was ready to rock and roll. My first attempt failed as the bottom right corner did not properly get placed in the outer shell appropriately. No problem though, on attempt number two, I was successful.

Once you have placed the Commuter case on the iPad, it is very well protected. You have solid polycarbonate protection on the back, top, bottom and sides. There are grooves in the underlying silicone to prevent them from sliding out of place which is nice. In other models of this type, the silicone would sometimes move after putting the case together and would require some adjustment (I did not identify this as a problem till I put on this case).

You have access to all of your openings: Speaker on the bottom, volume rocker, mute switch (previously known as  rotation lock), power button and headphone jack. The headphone jack has additional protection via a silicone plug built into the case. On the bottom of the case there is a hole cut into the back that allows the Apple logo to proudly display.

Now, here is one of the more compelling reasons to get this case. Because of it's design, it really isn't meant to come off frequently. That is a bit of a disappointment to someone like me who uses the iPad Dock and the Keyboard Dock. Well, my prayers have been answered and the Commuter has a removable plate in the back that allows access to a dock! It is easily removed and placed back again. As a matter of fact, I am typing this review on my iPad in the Keyboard Dock with the Otter Box Commuter in place!

Overall, the Otter Box Commuter Series for iPad is a perfect on-the-go accessory for everyday handheld technology. It doesn't get in the way (literally with the dock plate on the back) and you have piece of mind knowing that your iPad is safe and secure. It's available from the TiPb iPad Accessory Store.

The Otter Box Commuter Case for iPhone 4 is a well constructed hard-shell case with a silicone layer underneath and screen protector. It provides a no-slip grip while keeping the thin iPhone 4 form factor we love.

Reviewing cases can be tough; there are a lot out there. I think it's fair to say most cases I review are rather good. I haven't really come across the "perfect" case yet, but I might be close with this one. Why? Well, it's the perfect compromise between slim and protected and it's by Otter Box, an industry leader in hardcore protective cases.

What makes this case unique among its competition is that the silicone is very well constructed. The the hard shell outer case and the silicone literally work in concert to protect every aspect of your iPhone 4. The silicone covers everything from the headphone jack port across the top of the device to the 30-pin connector slot on the bottom. Each is protected with a flip-out plug. What is so great is the headphone jack is protected without the sacrifice of blocking the second mic; it's still uncovered. I am very impressed with Otter Box's design work.

The hardshell is pretty solid. The only way I could envision it breaking is if it was frozen to -30 degrees then smashed with a hammer. I seriously feel very secure with it.

Here is something else I like about the case; by now you may know how much I like raised edges on cases for the iPhone, as it protects the screen if it is laid on its face. With the Otter Box, I feel I am getting an extra .5 or 1mm additional height and the hardshell meets the height of the silicone on the top, bottom and sides of the device. This means that if placed face first and any weight is placed on the device, it is still not likely to scratch. That is great design work and my kudos to Otter Box.

If you're rocking Apple's other big smartphone release this year, the $99 iPhone 3GS (or the unlocked iPhone 3GS, depending on where you live), or still lucky enough to have a 16GB or 32GB iPhone 3GS from last year, this case should be on your radar. (It also fits the iPhone 3G.)

Confession: I thought I'd hate it when it first arrived. I don't know why exactly, maybe it was fear of layers bulk, uncertainty about dual color schemes, dunno, but I was not looking forward to testing out the Otterbox Commuter. Then I put it on.

AD&D analogy time -- If skins are the chainmail of the case world and the Otterbox Defender is the full plate armor (yes, even the pink one), the Commuter is the in-between, plate-mail option. It's strong but still a but flexible, solid and secure but still snug and light.

Like plate-mail it comes in two layers, the silicone that you slip on first, and that has covers for the 3.5mm headset jack and 30-pin dock connector, and the plastic shell that goes over it. Together they provide protection against scrapes and scuffs and minor impacts.

The Otterbox Commuter also comes in a ton of colors -- yellow, white, blue, green, brown, burgundy, and black. (Yes, I'll spare you the strained surcoat analogy).

Again, not as big as the Defender, not as thin as a skin, I found myself leaving it on even after my typical week-long review period was over. Since I've been carrying an iPhone 4 around as well, maybe I was a little more concerned about my iPhone 3GS getting damaged, maybe I started to like the look, or maybe I wanted my fellow SPE editors to think I had an imaginary, super-secret iPhone 5 prototype hidden in a fancy camo case (I'll never tell!)

But leave it on I did.

The OtterBox Defender fully encompasses your iPhone. It comes in four different parts: the hard inner shell that separates into two parts, a soft silicone layer that goes over the inner shell for added protection, and then a belt clip which grasps your iPhone. A sheet of plastic covers the screen, camera lens and back Apple logo hole. The other buttons and ports on the iPhone are covered by removable silicone so they are also protected from dust.

The hard inner core provides impact resistance and the outer silicone provides cushioning and a better grip for the user. If you want a case that will provide protection from all but the greatest of falls and bumps, then the Otterbox Defender is for you.

It should be noted, however, that while the Otterbox Defender will resist a little rain or a light splash, it's not water resistant. If you would like something you can take to the beach or the bathtub then I would recommend the Aquapac.

Just because it's dressed up in pink, that doesn't make the Otterbox Defender any easier to put on or take off your iPhone. I looked at the case, turned it around a few times, trying to figure out how to open it. Sheepishly, I asked Rene to open the case for me. He then took the case and turned it around a few times. In the end we figured out you have to stretch the silicone layer off the inner core, logical you say? Chinese puzzle box, I reply!

So if you need to get your iPhone in and out of its protection quickly than this is not a case to get. Its protective qualities also make this case more bulky than most, though a fair trade for your precious iPhone. I found the belt clip to be less secure than I wanted and I usually carried the OtterBox Defender in my purse. Loose belt clips seem to be a problem specifically for the pink version of this case but not for the other color selections (black, yellow, white).

The front screen was still easily touch sensitive and I had no problems using it for texting and gaming, though the high side bezels did make it difficult to access the inside edges of the screen.

Project Pink began as a simple promise: if 50 comment were made in a past review our dedicated editor Rene Ritchie would wear the next pink case I received for review. As soon as the post went up the comments came streaming in, people Twittered and Facebooked to ensure it would occur -- in short it took on a life of its own. We easily got 50 comments by the end of the first day. A week went by, then two, scheduling conflicts, illness, for a while I doubted that Project Pink would ever come to completion. Then I heard that Rene had to travel to the Apple store. I knew this was the perfect opportunity to have Rene test out the OtterBox Defender and its lovely shade of bubblegum pink. Being a man of his word and a great sport, not only did Rene wear the OtterBox Defender but he twittered, emailed and carried it around on his belt. Though this was not all selfless as he did garner quite a good deal of female attention at the same time.

If you absolutely must have a pink case but also demand something that gives your iPhone the best chance for survival then the Otterbox Defender is for you. It's multilayer design offers protection and grip though it is thicker than most cases, just ask Rene!

The OtterBox Impact case offers a slim, form-fitting Silicone layer of protection for your iPhone 3G while still providing impact-absorbing features. The back of the case and the corners are impact-absorbing and dissipate impact away from your iPhone 3G. Additionally, the sides of the case are textured for a more secure grip. One of my main concerns about skin cases is that, historically, I've had poor luck with them. Why? Usually they stretch a bit over time and start slipping around my smartphone like a cheap oversized suit. I'm very encouraged by the OtterBox case design because although the Silicone is thin and flexible, it wraps completely around each end of the iPhone and resists unwanted stretching and shifting.

The feel and grip of the case is comfortable, particularly with the textured sides. The screen is fully accessible, as well as all of the functions, ports and buttons. The additional thickness of the Silicone along the back and corners provide additional impact from impacts and scratching. The case has a stylish look and the open round window on the back for the Apple logo is a nice touch.

The OtterBox Impact Series Case for the iPhone 3G is hard to beat for the price. The Silicone skin is protective and comfortably grippy, all ports and controls are accessible, and you have a choice of black or white, depending on your taste. The case is stylish and seems to resist the stretching and slipping that can occur over time with other skin cases. I'm happy to report that there are many positives and nothing negative to report. Especially for the price of $12.95, I can give this case a big thumbs up.

Design

The OtterBox comes in 4 different parts—each serving a purpose to cradle and protect the iPhone 3G. The base layer is a hard plastic shell (front and back). The second layer is a thick yet still soft layer of silicone that wraps around the aforementioned hard plastic shell. And finally, the last piece is a plastic cradle that adds another layer of protection but also doubles as a belt clip.

A thin sheet of plastic protects the screen, camera port, and Apple Logo while the headphone port, volume buttons, and sleep/wake ringer switch are protected via rubber caps. A thin cloth also covers the speakers.

Overall, the design of the OtterBox is carefully thought out and provides a perfect fit for every little nook, switch, and button on the iPhone 3G. Using a hard shell base layer with a silicone skin offers great protection while providing for even greater textile feel.

Usability

Obviously, the OtterBox Defender Series serves to a specific niche and those who have no need for such a rugged case would assume the case is in excess. But judging it from a pure protective stance—there are few options better. I have full confidence that the OtterBox case will protect my iPhone 3G in almost any likely scenario—a fall down the stairs, skidding across a hiking trail, and even a drop on concrete.

But because of its intricate design, care and exactness is needed when applying the case. The OtterBox is not an ordinary case that can be easily slipped off and on, you’ll have to fix the silicone to wrap around the intricacies of the plastic shell. Furthermore, the plastic shell seems to have a lot of clips and snaps that need to be put together. It’s a process to be sure, but after you’re done, this is protection at its finest.

Even more amazing is how the OtterBox maintains the iPhone 3G’s sensitivity and allows access to all its ports, buttons, and features. The touchscreen maintains the same sensitivity, I had absolutely no problem playing games and surfing the web with the OtterBox applied.

The buttons can be easily pressed except for the Home button. For some reason OtterBox decided to make a Home Button that cuts off the top of the circle. The plastic cover for the touchscreen can also get problematic if you leave some air space between it and the iPhone’s screen. Unsightly air bubbles would appear but I found this to be hit or miss and not particularly damaging.

The included belt clip is made from the same tough plastic as the hard shell and it locks the iPhone into it quite well. In fact, I often times had trouble pulling the iPhone out of the clip—the fit was that secure. The belt clip is able to rotate 360 degrees and the iPhone can be placed either be open faced or face backwards.

OtterBox has certainly improved on the deficiencies in the original iPhone, namely two issues that I had problems with are now fixed. The ringer switch is now accessible and the home button can be pressed when inserted into the belt clip. Bravo to OtterBox for listening to my complaints!

In all, the OtterBox offers as close to complete protection and coverage of every part of the iPhone. If you’re looking for superb protection or live an outdoor lifestyle, this case is truly one of the best available.

Final Thoughts

I’m a huge fan of OtterBox products because they put care into their design and they execute extremely well. The silicone seems to be of higher grade than basic silicone cases—offering better texture, thicker protection, and doesn’t seem to stretch as much. I definitely feel like OtterBox succeeded in creating a case that can offer maximum protection without sacrificing usability.

The one downfall is obviously price. At $49.95 it is a fairly steep cost to pay for an iPhone case. But compared with other cases priced near the Defender, the Defender offers an infinite amount more protection. Though it does add considerable amount of thickness, if you’re looking for a case that protects your iPhone from the elements—thickness should be expected.

Also, it cannot be fully submerged under water, a definite shortcoming considering its target market. However, with all things considered, the Otterbox Defender for iPhone 3G is great implementation of protection without compromise. All of the iPhone’s features are present with an unparalleled level of protection. I would consider this a buy for anyone who’s lifestyle is rugged, planning an outdoor trip, or is looking for the ultimate protection for their iPhone.

Design

From a quick glance, the Otterbox Defender doesn’t look much different than any other case. Upon closer inspection however, you begin to notice the well-thought design and construction. Though it adds a considerable amount of thickness to the iPhone, it feels great and solid in hand.

The Otterbox Defender comes in four separate pieces: a front and back hard shell, a silicone sleeve, and a belt clip. The Otterbox Defender includes a protective plastic cover for the screen and an exposed plastic to show the Apple logo—I mean you still have to know it’s an iPhone right?

The camera is also protected by a thin sheet of plastic and the headphone jack and docking port are protected via rubber caps. The speakers and microphone have a very thin sheet of protection on it. The volume, lock, and home controls are also protected by rubber buttons with the silent/ringer switch is completely inaccessible.

Overall, the design of the Otterbox Defender is extremely sturdy and solid. The choice to use a combination of a plastic hard shell with a silicone rubber skin is great because it combines the protection of a hard shell with the overall feel of rubber.

Usability

With such an intricate design for a case, it is obviously going to take time to apply and remove the Otterbox Defender to the iPhone. There are a lot of clips that need to be snapped together and rubber that needs to fit in specific holes, but after you get through that process, make no doubt about it, your iPhone feels as protected as can be. The silicone rubber skin is of great quality and feels great in hand.

All the buttons—volume, lock, home—are equally as responsive with the rubber covering them. Amazingly, the plastic screen that protects the actual iPhone touch screen does not inhibit the sensitivity. I was very impressed by how responsive the iPhone’s touch screen was under that layer of plastic. The only problem with the plastic screen is that if pressed with any amount of force, it would occasionally create unsightly air bubbles. There didn’t seem to be anyway around it.

The included belt clip is made from the same tough plastic as the hard shell and it locks the iPhone into it quite well. In fact, I often times had trouble pulling the iPhone out of the clip—the fit was that secure.
