With the Amazon Kindle being the go-to eBook reader for most people and the Kindle store being the place to get those eBooks, you'd be forgiven for forgetting that Apple has its own option. For those who'd prefer to read on an iPad, Mac, or iPhone the Apple Books app and accompanying store might be a better option — ignoring for a moment the fact that you can download the Kindle app on all three of those devices.

But while many of us are all-in on Kindle, it seems that plenty of others are using Apple Books as their destination for a good story, as well they should. It's a well-designed app that looks great and works well, and with all of the best books available, there's little reason not to go the Apple Books route unless you like reading on a Kindle and its E Ink display. I do, so Apple Books is a no-go for me, but I'm not everyone and plenty of people are more than happy to read on their iPad mini, for example.

To that end, Apple has shared a list of the most popular books across a few different categories including audiobooks — because yes, Apple Books has audiobooks as well. What's more, just like Apple Music Replay 2023, Apple Books now has a year-in-review option for those who wondered just how many books they'd read and how many minutes they spent doing it.

All the popular kids

This year's Year in Review is available on the iPhone and iPad and can be found in the Read Now tab under Top Picks. Note that you'll need to have marked at least three books as finished for it to appear, though.

There, you'll find information about the books you've read or listened to through 2023 including personalized reading highlights. Apple will also tell you what reader type you are. The press release explaining this says that "there are six reader types to discover, including The Contemporary for readers of trendy titles; The Completist for readers of multiple books in a series; The Seeker for nonfiction readers; The Wanderer for multigenre readers; The Deep Diver for single-genre readers; or The Free Spirit for readers with wide-ranging interests across the book world." There is sure to be some interesting information in there, that's for sure.

As for the most popular books, Apple says that the top five most popular nonfiction books of the year include, in this order:

1. Spare by Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex
2. The Woman in Me by Britney Spears
3. The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder by David Grann
4. Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity by Peter Attia and Bill Gifford

As for the fiction books, author Rebecca Yarros has had a particularly good year, taking the top two spots.

Pocket has long been one of the best read-later apps around and now it's getting a refresh.

The updated Pocket has been around on Android for a little while but parent company Mozilla has today announced that Pocket is rolling out a new mobile and web interface that includes those of us using iPhones.

Mozilla says that Pocket is now "faster and simpler to use," two things that are always a good idea when you're just trying to save content and then read it later.

Rolling out now

The announcement blog post says that Pocket's update is rolling out right now to users who have iOS 16 or later installed. Assuming that's you, a new Home experience will likely be the first thing that you will notice.

"With the launch of the latest version of Pocket on iOS (available once you download iOS 16 on your iPhone), the redesigned app will be faster and simpler to use with a focus on a new Home experience – a starting off point for visiting everything in Pocket, from your saved content to the articles and Curated Collections we think you’ll love," the announcement reads. "We will be continuing to build on Home to provide you with different perspectives on what you’ve saved and what you’ve discovered, as well as topics like Best of the Web, Editors’ Picks, In Case You Missed It, and more."

Pocket also now features a simplified navigation and settings screen, we're told, while a new "Saves" tab will replace "My List" with an updated design that will make "it even more streamlined and giving Pocket users one place to access features like search, and listen, as well as to view your tagged items and favorites"

The Kindle Oasis has been reduced on Amazon by a not insubstantial $75, bringing it down to its "Amazon Prime Day reduction" low price of $175 at Amazon. While this makes it cheaper than full price, it's still around $50 more expensive than the next Kindle down the list, the Kindle Paperwhite Signature edition. But what are you getting with the Kindle Oasis, and why is it worth choosing the most premium Kindle over other e-readers in the range? Well, I've got one — and I'm going to tell you why.

Before we get started, it's worth keeping in mind that the Prime Day deals will only last until tonight, and after that, the Kindle family is going back up to full price. So if you're looking for a base model Kindle or a Kindle Oasis, then you're going to have to move fast as they'll be back up to full price before you know it.

Why get a Kindle in the first place?

I love books. I love the smell of them, the feeling of turning the page, the colorful covers, and the "thud" that a hardback makes when you put it down on a table. What I don't love is the amount of space they take up. It's nice to have them all on shelves to show off what kind of books you like reading, but it reaches a point where there's not even enough space available for any new books to slot in. Instead, if you're anything like me, you end up with boxes upon boxes of books in cupboards or in the loft that occasionally enter a kind of bookshelf rotation, with the books swapping around on the shelves every now and again, or when I can be bothered.

I never thought I'd like a Kindle or any kind of e-reader for that matter. There aren't any pages to turn and sniff, no colorful covers, and no thud when you put the device down on a table. That was until I bought my first Kindle. It was the base model, with no touch screen and a bunch of buttons all over the place. I didn't think I'd like it, even as I unboxed it, making myself look happy for the very generous people who had bought it for me. It wasn't until I had to pack up for a holiday that the little device truly came into its own.

Oddly, it wasn't the e-ink screen that convinced me. I'd never used the best iPad to read any books and generally avoided anything with a screen to read for long periods of time so as to not get eye strain. Sure, the e-ink screen was nice on the eyes, but it still wasn't a page.

It was the space-saving aspect of it that made me realize just how useful a Kindle is. I'm a book-a-day kind of gal when I go away, and when you're heading off into the deepest darkest depths of the North of England for two weeks, you tend to bring more books than you know what to do with. Suddenly, I didn't have to restrict my book intake. I could download all the books I could ever read onto my little Kindle and pop it in my rucksack. Those 14 books I'd leave with and 20 I'd come back with two weeks later were no longer a space issue — it was all on a little device I could almost fit in a pocket.

But why the Oasis?

Once I'd realized that the Kindle was the future of reading, I used it for years until I dropped it down a mountain path, and watched it tumble to its doom at the base of a rocky outcrop. I don't think devastated quite cuts it; I was bereft of my Kindle. A replacement was necessary, and I wanted all the features.

I wanted a warm light, a sturdy aluminum chassis, and, most of all, buttons. The tactile click of the buttons had replaced the act of turning the page for me — I don't think I could do without it. When I went shopping, I looked at the whole Kindle range and each one had at least one of my requirements. Only one, however, had all of them: the Kindle Oasis.

Its sleek aluminum shell is a joy to hold, the e-ink screen is the clearest I've ever seen on an e-reader, and the warm light does a surprisingly good job of making eye strain a thing of the past as you read in the dark. I wish it had a USB -C charging port (it remains with a micro USB connector) and the Bluetooth connection it has, for some reason, is useless. But besides those two things, the Kindle Oasis is the best Kindle you can buy.

What about the other Kindles?

They're great! But they're not the Oasis. If you're looking for a cheap way to dip your toe into the joys of reading on an e-ink screen then the base model Kindle is an absolute steal at the moment for $45 at Amazon on Prime Day. It's even got a front light, so you won't have to buy an extra light. It's got everything you need in an e-reader, but not necessarily what you might want. Nothing extra. Nothing that says "I read books all the time." The base Kindle is a fine device and likely good for almost everyone, but if you're like me, you'll want something more.

The Kindle Paperwhite is also a solid e-reader and it's down to $95 at Amazon at the moment for the Prime Day sale. It features some of the best aspects of the Kindle Oasis. There's an adjustable warm light for reading in the dark and a 6.7-inch screen that covers the front of the device — but that's also the problem. There are no buttons to bring at least some of the physical feeling of reading a book. Again, while the Kindle Paperwhite is a stunning device it just doesn't really offer enough over the base model anymore to be worth it.

The Kindle Paperwhite signature edition is not worth the money either. At the moment, it's barely cheaper than the Oasis, and the only feature you gain is wireless charging and a USB-C charging port. If it wasn't $135 at Amazon, it would be worth it. But for $40 extra with the Oasis, you gain a lot more.

There's more heft to the Oasis, with its aluminum shell, and the light is more pleasing on the eyes thanks to the extra LEDs that Amazon has packed in next to the screen. It's got this great feel, with an ergonomically designed shape that contours and twists around your hand to make reading even more comfortable than reading a book. Sure, you can use the screen to turn your pages, but there are two marvelously clicky buttons that do a far better job in the widened bezel on the device's right-hand side. Left-handed? No worries, turn the device upside down and the screen rights itself, and the buttons are on the correct side.

Look, just buy the Oasis

Do you need to buy the Kindle Oasis? No, if you need a really basic portable reading device, then skip the Paperwhite and Oasis and go for the base model. It's light and is less than half the price of its bigger sibling. If you're looking for the absolute best experience that an e-reader can muster, then buy the Kindle Oasis. It's beautiful, comfortable, and currently $75 off. Just please, please don't read on your iPad. Your eyes will hate you. Both are great additions to the home, however, and any bookworm would be lucky to get one of these to call their very own.

Like a lot of white Americans, I have, shall we say, gaps in my understanding of systemic racial injustice in the United States. It's not that I'm blind to it, it's just that I don't have a full understanding of the issues at hand because I lack first-hand experience, or I'm not sure how to recognize or confront racism when I see it.

What you need to know

ASUS recently announced the official launch of its dual-screen notebook, the ZenBook Pro Duo, which will be available Sept. 6. There are two upgradable models. The entry level model starts at $2,500 and comes with a 2.6GHz 6-core processor with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage. The advanced model has a 2.3GHz 8-core processor with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage, which starts at $3,000.

The ZenBook Pro Duo sports an advanced OLED Ultra HD screen with a 3840 x 2160 resolution.

Oh, and it also has a second 4K display, called the ScreenPad Plus, that sits above the keyboard ... like the Touch Bar of a MacBook Pro.

Like the Touch Bar, but so very much not like the Touch bar. For one, it's a 4K UHD display. It's also fairly large at 14-inches with a 32:9 aspect ratio. It takes up a lot of space and makes the ZenBook Pro Duo somewhat unwieldy, but it's pretty dang cool looking.

Since the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar launched, there's been a lot of sides-taken as to whether it's a useful addition to the laptop or a gimmick. I'm of the opinion that it's incredibly useful for those that use it. For people that don't, I can see why you'd think it's a gimmick. You can really only do one thing with it, which is use it as a mappable shortcut for tools in apps.

The ZenBook Pro Duo functions as a toolbar, a second screen, a screen extender, and it even supports styluses for on-keyboard writing and drawing. It's certainly a hulked out version of a Touch Bar. Difficult to call this thing a gimmick when it can extend your entire screen, or just give you a second screen right there on your lap without you needing to plug anything in. the ScreenPad Plus can even be split in two so you could have two smaller 16:9 ratio screens side-by-side below the larger 15.4-inch main screen.

The problem with the ZenBook Pro Duo (other than the fact that it isn't an Mac) is that it's thick and I don't mean thicc with two Cs. It's almost a full inch thick and it weighs 5.5 pounds. It's not exactly portable. It's more like a desktop replacement, which makes me think, wouldn't it just be better to have a monitor on your desk to use as a second screen? At least with the ZenBook Pro Duo, you get a lot of cool features on that ScreenPad Plus (like app switching, a toolbar, and touch and stylus support). I also like the idea that that second screen is always with you, whether you're sitting on the couch or in your office.

Am I hoping Apple will do something like this to the Touch Bar for the MacBook Pro? Absolutely not. If my laptop has to be that thick to be functional, I'd rather just plug it into a monitor when I need it. I do like what the ZenBook Pro Duo does and if I could justify spending $2,500 on something I just want to play around with, I'd get one. But I've got to save up for that 16-inch MacBook Pro!

Not a member of Kindle Unlimited yet? Here's your chance. Get three months of Amazon's All-You-Can-Read buffet for just $1.99 total. The subscription service normally costs $9.99 a month, so you're saving $28 with this deal. After the three months are up, it will renew automatically for the normal rate. How to enable Guided Access on iPhone and iPad

1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap on General.
3. Tap on Accessibility.
4. Tap on Guided Access under the Learning section.

5. Tap the switch to turn on Guided Access.
6. Tap on Passcode Settings.
7. Tap Set Guided Access Passcode and set a passcode.

8. Toggle Accessibility Shortcut to On, which allows you to triple-click the Home button and enter Guided Access at any time.

How to use Guided Access to stop people from snooping your photos

1. Tap Photos from your home screen.
2. Tap the photo you would like to show someone with Guided Access.
3. Triple click the Home button to launch Guided Access.

4. Tap on Options in the bottom left corner to choose whether or not you want to grant access to the Sleep/Wake button, Volume buttons, touch screen, and motion. Tap Done to save your selections. To make sure no one is scrolling through your images, turn off all of your options.
5. Tap on Start at the top of the screen to begin Guided Access.

Whoever you have shown your phone to will no longer be able to scroll through your images until they triple-press the home button 3 times and insert the right access code.

Calling all bibliophiles: version 6.6 of Amazon's Kindle app is rolling out today, providing a few new features that will hopefully make your reading experience easier and more fulfilling than ever.

Perhaps most useful of all the update's offerings is the ability to return Prime Reading and Kindle Unlimited books without ever needing to leave the app. For those unfamiliar, Kindle Unlimited is essentially a book-centric version of Netflix in which you pay $9.99 monthly for a subscription that gives you unlimited access to a sizable catalog of books, magazines, and audiobooks. On the other hand, Prime Reading is a service that comes along with an Amazon Prime subscription, and offers free access to a slightly smaller library of titles than Kindle Unlimited. Prior to now, Kindle for iOS users had to return books by opening a web browser and doing it on Amazon. With this update, however, all you need to do to return your book once you're finished is long press on a book cover and select "Return book." Easy peasy!

In addition to the returns feature, Amazon has also added a new mobile-friendly magazine format, complete with popular magazine titles like Food Network, Life and Style, and US Weekly. It's possible that Amazon created this feature in an attempt to compete with Apple, which recently acquired magazine subscription service Texture. Amazon will only offer a total of about 19 titles to start with, but will likely offer more at some point in the future.

Finally, the Kindle app now boasts a new setting that lets you enable the highlight menu so it shows up when you select text.

Bookworms rejoice: version 6.5 of Amazon's Kindle app is rolling out today, offering a few long-awaited new features that'll greatly improve your e-reading experience.

Perhaps most exciting of all the new features is the support for iOS 10's split-screen view on the iPad. You can finally take advantage of all those good good multitasking opportunities by answering text messages or looking up information on Google to supplement your reading materials, all without actually leaving the Kindle app.

In addition to split-screen support, Amazon has also added infinite scrolling for those of you out there who prefer a more blog-like reading atmosphere (or, you know, for those of you who just hate having to turn pages). Frankly, a book manifesting as a giant, seemingly endless text is incredibly intimidating to me personally, but if that's your jam, more power to you. All you have to do to access continuous scrolling is toggle the infinite scroll setting on in your Kindle app's "Aa" formatting menu. If you're unfamiliar with the menu, it's located in the navigation bar at the top right of your phone screen once you open a book to read it.

Finally, the Kindle app now boasts support for Kindle dictionaries in Arabic, as well as the ability to pull down in your library to refresh your book list post-sync.

I have been an avid Redditor since I walked the halls of my high school blaring Iron Maiden through my first generation iPod and my hair was halfway down my back — yes, I was a cool kid. Hairstyles of the early 2000s aside, I have been lurking, commenting, posting, and upvoting on Reddit for about over decade and browsing Reddit on your iPhone or iPad has always been a frustrating experience. The new Apollo Reddit Client (hereby now referred to as just Apollo) is one man's effort to make a Reddit app that is as simple, fast, and easy to use as the Reddit you visit on your browser, and by golly, I think he's done it.

A brief Reddit app history

To understand why Apollo is such a big deal, you need a quick history lesson. Once upon a time, there were many third-party apps for Reddit, and all of them were problematic. Limits on what subreddits you could find, GIFs that wouldn't load correctly, or even not give you the ability to upvote or downvote posts, these apps made for a subpar experience.

Then one day, an app called Alien Blue rose from the depths and quickly became the Reddit, client king. It was better than all the apps out there, and I used it for a long time. That is until Reddit itself bought out Alien Blue and tasked the developers to create an official Reddit app and killed off the service to Alien Blue and by that I mean Alien Blue is no longer supported by its developers.

Since then the official Reddit app was the only way to browse Reddit conveniently on your iPhone or iPad until now.

Why I love Apollo

I have now been using Apollo for over a week, and I can definitively tell you I will not be going back to the official Reddit app. Apollo's tagline is "Beautiful. Fast. Powerful." And It delivers on all of those promises and makes browsing, commenting, and posting on Reddit feel natural.

The creator of Apollo is a former Apple intern, Christian Selig, and he set out to make a Reddit app that used the iOS design guidelines and knowledge he learned, and with that, he managed to make a Reddit client that feels like it belongs on your phone.

Everything from the menus to the swipe gestures to the design all feels familiar to an iPhone user. That familiarity is not only comforting; it makes Apollo as easy to use as any other default app that Apple puts on your iPhone.

You'll notice a common theme throughout the design and interface in Apollo is the concept that simplicity is king. Whether you're browsing the front page in compact view to get as many post and information in a short amount of time, or you're lurking through a subreddits that's heavily visual with the large thumbnails view, the design is as minimalist as it gets.

This design choice allows you to focus on the information you want to without your eyes have to fight for attention on the screen. Also, Apollo works in landscape mode! It makes scrolling through Reddit on your iPad so much better knowing you can use the entire screen in landscape rather than the pitiful center alignment that the official Reddit app gives you (as seen above on the left.)

By far my favorite part of Apollo is the ability to perform tasks with gestures, specifically upvoting, downvoting, commenting, and saving.

Like everything else in the app, the gestures are kept simple — swiping left or right — and they allow you to browse Reddit at lightning fast speeds. If you come across a post you want to upvote, merely do a short swipe right on the post, and you'll be done. Want to downvote a comment? Easy! Just perform a long right swipe. Of course, you can choose to ignore the swiping gestures and use icons and buttons to accomplish the same task, but once you get used to the gestures, you'll realize just how quickly you can do everything.

You can even customize the gestures in Apollo's settings menu to do a plethora of other actions, meaning you can browse Reddit the way you want.

No app is ever perfect, and Christian Selig knows there's always room to improve. If you head over to the Apollo app subreddit, you'll see a community already coming together to improve the minor bugs or annoyance that have popped up for some users and Christian himself is exceptionally active and responsive to feedback always trying to improve the app in any way he can. It's wonderful to see Christian be so passionate about Apollo and actively listening and responding to comments and feedback is just the kind of indie developer I want to support.

Speaking of support, I would highly suggest you throw $2.99 to upgrade to the pro version of Apollo. This will not only let you create posts but also includes quite a few neat features like scheduling times for dark mode to kick in and out. You obviously don't have to; if you're just a Reddit lurker and you don't bother posting or commenting, you can use Apollo as is and take advantage of a well-designed app.

At the end of the day, Apollo has become my preferred way to Reddit. It's insanely intuitive, has great customization options, and the simple gestures make browsing Reddit a lightning fast experience. In a press release today Amazon introduced the newest version of its high-end Kindle model, the Oasis. Not only is it more cost effective than its predecessor, but it also got a really sweet overhaul.

Like the original Oasis (which launched early last year), the revamped Oasis has an ergonomic design meant for multi-hour reading sessions. It's got an asymmetrical bezel with page-turning buttons as well as a large grip on the back side, so it feels natural to hold one-handed and you can rest your thumb comfortably without obscuring any of the page. However, the glass the screen is made of on the all-new version is stronger, and the back is aluminum instead of electroplated metal alloy over plastic. Even with the increased size it's still pretty light at 194 grams — 10 grams lighter than the popular Kindle Paperwhite.

The revamped Oasis also boasts a 7-inch 300 ppi display, which the company says results in fewer page turns as it can fit approximately 30% more words per page. The ultra-crisp text is meant to read like paper, which means you won't get a glare if you're reading in bright sunlight.

Perhaps the most exciting change to the new Oasis, though, is that it's finally waterproof. There have been waterproof e-Readers on the market for years now, so it only makes sense that one of the most notable and popular join the crowd. Its IPX8 waterproofing means that it should survive under about five feet of water for 30 minutes, and unlike many waterproof devices, it's resistant to both freshwater and saltwater.

Aside from all that, there are a ton of other smaller features that make the new Oasis seem great:

• More storage: The Oasis comes with 8 GB of storage standard, which is twice as much as much as the old Oasis. You can also opt for the 32 GB option.
• Audible built right in: The new Oasis has built-in support for Audible audiobooks, which will arrive through an update after the e-Reader ships. Unfortunately, you'll have to purchase both the Audible and Kindle versions of a book to be able to switch between reading it and hearing it, and because the Oasis has no speaker or headphone jack, you'll have to use a Bluetooth-enabled audio device to listen.
• New font and accessibility options: In addition to the OpenDyslexic font, the Oasis now offers an invert feature that turns the text white and the page black if you have light sensitivity. There are also more font sizes and boldness options to choose from, so you can make reading as comfortable as possible for yourself.
• Super long battery life: A single charge on the Kindle Oasis lasts up to eight weeks, so you can spend more time reading than ever.

Senior Vice President of Amazon Devices and Services Dave Limp commented on Kindle's journey from its conception to now:

The all-new Oasis is actually a bit cheaper than the original, and is priced at $250 for the standard 8 GB model (the 32 GB will cost $280). MARVEL Contest of Champions is a popular free-to-play mobile fighting game developed by Kabam. Although the game launched in 2014, it remains wildly popular and is constantly updated with new characters, quests, and treasures to be discovered.

As the player, you assume the role of Summoner and are tasked with battling your way through various quests, fights, and special events colorful fast-paced action.

The Objective

The ultimate objective in MARVEL Contest of Champions is to build the biggest, baddest, and meanest team comprised of heroes and villains to take down all the rest. Of course, there are multiple different things you can do throughout the course of the game to bolster your squad into the ultimate fighting machines.

Champions

All the characters you can play as throughout the game are referred to as champions. These are characters you will no doubt recognize from MARVEL movies, comics, and other media over the years.

MARVEL Contest of Champions has just under 100 different playable champions in the game, so you'll run across a few of your favorite heroes, villains, and anti-heroes along the way.

If you're going to make the best team you possibly can, you'll need to fight your way through quests, upgrade your champions, and use crystals to get new champions.

New Champions, Crystals, and Units.

You'll start off the game with two champions already in your arsenal, but they are pretty weak, and you'll be able to get better ones as you progress. To receive new champions, you'll need to pick up crystals and crack them open to see what's inside.

While the game will occasionally reward you with crystals that will give you a chance at new champions, the main way to get champion producing crystals is by collecting the premium currency in the game known as Units. You receive Units as you progress through the game and defeat enemies or buy using real money to buy them via an in-app purchase.

Once you have enough units to purchase a premium hero crystal (100 units for one), you'll be able to open the crystal and receive a random champion.

Champion Rank

Not all champions are created equal. Each champion will have a rank which is represented by a star rating, one star being the lowest rank and four stars being the highest rank.

The higher the rank of a champion, the more powerful they will be overall. Using a premium hero crystal will give you the opportunity to receive either a 2-star, 3-star, or 4-star champion; however, the higher the rank, the rarer they are to find in crystals.

Champion Classes

If you know anything about Marvel, you know there are lots of superpowered people, aliens, robots, and even gods roaming the universe. With such a diverse cast, MARVEL Contest of Champions has separated champions into six classes. Skill, Science, Mystic, Cosmic, Tech, and Mutant.

These classes all have their advantages, disadvantages, and even unique abilities. Here's a quick example of some of the champions you'll find in each class.

• Skill: Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Punisher all belong to the Skill class.
• Science: Hulk, Ant-Man, and Luke Cage all received their powers because of science.
• Mystic: Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange, Loki are all Mystic class champions.
• Cosmic: Thanos, Drax, and Captain Marvel receive their powers from some Cosmic entity.
• Tech: Vision, Iron Man, and Star-Lord are all Tech marvels.
• Mutant: Wolverine, Storm, Cable are all genetically mutated humans.

Class Bonus

Different classes receive a special bonus against champions of other classes, causing them to be more effective or less effective in combat against certain opponents.

The class bonus circle isn't available in the game, oddly enough, but before each fight you'll always be able to see if your champions are benefiting or not from a class bonus, so you'll know which character to take into battle.

The class bonus circle goes like this:

Mutant > Skill > Science > Mystic > Cosmic > Tech > Mutant

Upgrading Champions

You start the game with two champions that are both going to be rank one, which is the lowest rank in the game; however, you can upgrade heroes throughout the game and make them stronger. There are two ways to increase the power of your champions; you can enhance their level or increase their rank.

To level up your champions you'll need to use something known as ISO-8. It's a radioactive isotope that;s popular in the Marvel universe and in this game it powers up your characters!

You'll collect ISO-8 as you complete quests, open crystals, and defeat enemies. When you go to level up a champion, it will take a certain amount of ISO-8 to power them up. Once you have given them enough ISO-8 to level up (as indicated by the gauge at the bottom of the screen picture above), you'll also need to spend some gold. Both the amount of ISO-8 and gold you need to level a character up will increase as their level increases.

You can't level up a character indefinitely, the will eventually reach a level cap. The only way to power them up once they have reached their cap is to increase their rank.

Once you have increased a champion to their max level, you'll need to power them up further by increasing their rank. Essentially, when a champion gains a rank, they get an extra star, and their stats reset to the baseline for a champion of that rank. Remember, the higher the rank, the stronger a champion can become in the long run.

Increasing a champions rank is done by using Catalysts, which you receive randomly throughout your time completing quests they are pretty rare and incredibly valuable, so make sure you use them on the right champions!

Quests

There are two types of quests you can embark on in MARVEL Contest of Champions, Story Quests and Event Quests. Both types operate practically the same, but there are a few key things to know about how quests work.

Each quest has a map that consists of nodes. Some of these nodes have enemies you'll need to battle, some of them have items hidden, and some of them have nothing. As you move to each node, you'll be using energy. You only have a finite amount of energy at a time, and it recuperates at a rate of one energy per six minutes.

You'll notice some quest maps have multiple paths to the final fight of each quest; this means you'll have to choose a path at every intersection. You can't backtrack during the quest itself; however, you can repeat older quests as many times as you want, meaning you can go back and snag the items you left behind the first time around.

You can only have a set amount of champions join you on each quest, and you have to pick them before you start. Choose carefully and try to keep your team as diverse as possible to try and capitalize on any class bonus opportunities that may arise.

The number of champions you can take with you increases as you progress through the game. The lowest amount you'll ever have is two, while the highest is five.

Each champion will start each new quest at full health; however, once the quest has begun, champions (except for some mutants) don't heal on their own.

If you want to heal a champion, you'll have to do so by using a potion on them right before you enter a fight. You'll earn healing potion in quests and crystals. Always keep track of your champion's' health and don't let anybody die!

Combat System

The combat system in MARVEL Contest of Champions is relatively easy to learn and the in-game tutorial does a good job of teaching you the basics. In case you need a refresher, here are the basics of combat.

• Light Attack: A fast and weak attack that does minimal damage. Perform a light attack by tapping on the right side of the screen.
• Medium Attack: An attack that does moderate damage. Perform a medium attack by swiping right on the screen.
• Heavy Attack: A slow attack that does a fair amount of damage and can break through an enemy block. Perform a heavy attack by tapping, holding, and releasing on the right side of the screen.
• Special Attack: A unique attack for each champion that does massive damage. Tap the special attack button when your special gauge is full.
• Block: A block will severely reduce the amount of damage you take from light and medium attacks, but will not work against heavy attacks. Perform a block by tapping and holding your finger on the left side of the screen.

A small group of content creators on Reddit have been chosen to test an early version of a new feature. Basically, these users now have public profiles for other Redditors to subscribe to. These users can post things directly to this profile, making it possible for individual profile posts to appear on the home page instead of through a particular community. According to Reddit, this test is all about courting content creators.

These profiles look an awful lot like profiles you see on just about every social network. There's a profile photo, a background banner photo, a list of posts from that user with individual comment threads, and a list of communities this user is active in. It's fairly generic right now, because it's an early test and changes are expected to be made based on feedback, but that hasn't stopped Redditors from calling this the end of days.

While many Redditors have a long and storied history of hating any form of change, there's plenty of positive responses to this idea. This isn't fundamentally changing how interacting in a SubReddit works, but it does offer an alternative to creating a personal SubReddit and still maintain the ability to publish whatever you want.

While it's clear both sets of opinions have merit, the most important thing here is recognizing how early on this change is. This is not rolling out to everyone, because the folks at Reddit know it's nowhere near a complete thought yet. The people who have this feature now will be able to participate in the feedback process, and that's going to grow out from here with some extra tools added when necessary.

Is Reddit becoming Facebook? Probably not, no. Will this give content creators a unique space to broadcast their ideas? That's less clear. And, like any new thing on Reddit, this will need to be carefully monitored for abuse. I'm looking forward to seeing this grow, even though as a daily lurker I don't think I'll personally have a reason to use this feature anytime soon.
