With an exceptional track record for audio, Sonos is releasing its second-gen Roam speaker. With the previous device already being one of the best Bluetooth speakers for iPhone, the Roam 2 offers plenty of improvements across the board.

The Sonos Roam 2 opts for simpler controls on top this time, and a refined design that looks sleek. Easy Bluetooth pairing and AirPlay 2 support mean that the Bluetooth speaker will be easy to use with the best iPhones. The speaker is available to order from Sonos for $179/£179.

What do you get with the Sonos Roam 2?

The standout upgrade is the Bluetooth pairing. Gone are the days when you needed to set up your Roam on your home Wi-Fi before you could enjoy your tunes on the go. With the Roam 2, you can pair it directly to your Bluetooth device, making it as easy as pie to start listening immediately. Provided the speaker has some juice, of course. This brings the Roam 2 in line with the convenience of other Bluetooth speakers, allowing for spontaneous audio sessions without the faff. Plus, AirPlay 2 support means you can easily beam music to the speaker from your iPhone.

The Roam 2 also sports a dedicated Bluetooth button, ditching the need to hold down the power button for pairing. It's a small change, but it makes the whole process a lot more intuitive. The design tweaks don’t stop there: the Sonos logo is now monochromatic, matching the colour of the device itself. This subtle design choice gives the Roam 2 a cleaner, more cohesive look.

Despite these changes, the Roam 2 retains the core features that made its predecessor a hit. You’ll still get that robust sound quality, enhanced by Trueplay technology which adjusts the audio to suit your environment. The 10-hour battery life ensures you’re set for long listening sessions, and the IP67 waterproof rating means it can handle a splash or two without any fuss. Plus, it now comes in five colours: Olive, Sunset, Wave, Black, and White, up from the original’s two options.

More from iMore

Best Bluetooth speakers for iPhone, iPad, and Mac 2024

Lakers star LeBron James might have just leaked a new Beats Pill Bluetooth speaker

This Loewe Bluetooth speaker collab with Kylian Mbappe is a top option for your iPhone

Ever wished you could actually use the Lego models you build? Well now you can. Sort of. One of the newest Lego models is a radio speaker. It comes with some sounds included, but doesn't actually play the radio. But, your iPhone can make the model play real music.

It's not going to be one of the best Bluetooth speakers for iPhone, but is a cool way to use your new Lego model. Just slide your iPhone or Android into the front, fire up your favorite streaming service, and your Lego creation can start belting out bangers. Sure, you’ve got to manually select tracks on your phone, but think of it as the modern equivalent of lovingly creating a mixtape.

A radio like no other

With 906 pieces, this set isn’t for the faint-hearted or the under-18s. It’s firmly placed in the collectible Lego Icons series, so if you’ve got the patience and a steady hand, this build will be a stunning addition to your shelf. Even without its nifty music-playing trick, it’s a gorgeous piece of décor that screams mid-century chic.
Famous for high-end audio products, Loewe has come out kicking with its latest release. It's a new Bluetooth speaker, but it's made in collaboration with footballer Kylian Mbappe, and is available as a limited edition device.

Called the We. HEAR pro x Kylian Mbappé Bluetooth speaker, it's name perhaps isn't the catchiest, but it's set to be one of the best Bluetooth speakers for iPhone. This special edition release packs a powerful punch with its 100-watt output, ensuring crisp highs and deep, immersive bass.

The We. HEAR pro x Kylian Mbappé Bluetooth speaker will be available this May for £255. For the time being, you can pre-order it from Loewe. It's perfect for the audiophile who wants style and performance all in one neat package.

What all can this Loewe speaker do?

Thanks to an array of drivers and passive radiators alongside a Class-D amplifier, it delivers a listening experience optimized for horizontal placement. And if you prefer to tailor your tunes, the speaker offers direct sound customisation controls, so you can find that sweet spot wherever you take it. It's a bit like a similar feature on Apple’s HomePod.

With an IPX6 water and dust resistance rating, it’s perfect for outdoor adventuring. The all-day battery life keeps the music going for up to 24 hours, and fast-charging technology juices it up fully in just two hours. Plus, the speaker can double as a power bank to keep your other gadgets charged up.

Its compact form and lightweight design, with a nifty adjustable shoulder strap, make it easy to bring along on your travels. True wireless multi-pairing tech lets you sync up to 14 speakers simultaneously for a concert-like atmosphere. And if your mates can't be there in person, the hands-free calling feature and built-in mic have you covered for a chat.

Unfortunately, it doesn't come with AirPlay 2 support, like alternatives such as the Sonos Move 2. But it's still a top notch speaker that'll pair perfectly with your iPhone. And if you're a football fan, this release is sure to be a goal scored.

More from iMore

Best Bluetooth speakers for iPhone, iPad, and Mac 2024

Lakers star LeBron James might have just leaked a new Beats Pill Bluetooth speaker

New Beats on the way — fresh rumors show what the Solo4 headphones could look like, and when we might get them

They'll make a great accompaniment to any Mac desktop setup, and sit comfortably alongside the best speakers for Mac on the market today.

Audioengine A1-MR: Price and availability

The Audioengine A1-MR retail at roughly $229. They don’t seem to be available at Target or Amazon US right now, though we did find a full-priced pair over at Walmart.

It’s a similar story across the Atlantic. The Audioengine A1-MR retail at roughly £219 in the UK, although you can pick up a pair for £219 at Peter Tyson and £217 over at Amazon UK. Stocks seem to be healthy, too, so you shouldn’t be concerned about missing out.

Audioengine A1-MR: Build and design

If you’re putting them up against Michelangelo’s “David” or a bejewelled Fabergé egg, the Audioengines aren’t exactly heart-stoppers. In the realm of budget desktop speakers, they’re much of a muchness, and while their utilitarian look doesn’t exactly draw the eye, it doesn’t do much to offend it, either.

Standing around six inches tall, they’re far from gargantuan, but that’s understandable considering their given use case. What we’re less pleased about is a lack of provided speaker grilles or desktop stands, the latter of which are useful for getting audio fired into your ears rather than at your torso.

Audioengine A1-MR: Features

The classic Audioengine A1 bookshelf units only boasted Bluetooth connectivity, but the MR version builds on this base by offering expanded Wi-Fi and multi-room capabilities. Via the rather intuitive Audioengine app, you can control a slick multiroom streaming setup over your domestic Wi-Fi, as well as various streaming platforms including Spotify, Tidal and Amazon Music, or you can simply hook up directly via the provided 3.5mm input.

Future

Future

Sadly, the Audioengine app doesn’t come with any equaliser settings, something which seems like an odd omission, especially for users wishing to whack up the bass a little. There is a subwoofer-out option, but not everyone will be willing or able to hook up a sub to beef up the lower end.

Audioengine A1-MR: Sound quality

Sonically, the A1-MR are strong performers for their size and price, drawing on rich reserves of detail and musicality and demonstrating a sense of musicality that, considering their inevitable limitations, is undeniably impressive. Pump out a forthright rock anthem such as Placebo’s Sad White Reggae and you’ll be thrilled and impressed not only by the general cohesion on display, but the weight, force and enthusiasm with which the A1-MR convey those shrill guitars and piercing vocals.

The A1-MR’s blind spot is, as alluded to above, at the lower end, and whether you’re gaming, enjoying movies or listening to music, we’d love a little more heft and authenticity to go with the A1’s substantial knack for detail and organisation. They’re never going to have the floor-shaking capabilities of even a modestly priced pair of standmounts, but even so, more grip and weight in the bass would help tracks such as Kasabian’s Empire hit with full force.

Still, they’re a lively, pleasing listen, especially when hooked up to a source via a wired connection, full of the sort of spark and snap that makes a pair of dinky bookshelf monitors a genuinely enjoyable listen. We’d like a little more dynamic contrast to bring out our music’s peaks and troughs, but the overall sonic impression is positive, especially given the reasonable price paid.

Audioengine A1-MR: Competition

If you're after something with a more refined look and more detailed sound, try the Ruark MR1 Mk2 — our current top pick for desktop speakers. Plus, of course, there’s the standard, Bluetooth version of the A1 which currently sit at roughly £189 / $199 and share much of the same sonic DNA as the newer, wi-fi-centric edition.

Audioengine A1-MR: Should you buy it?

You should buy it if…

You want affordable, versatile and entertaining bookshelf speakers

Multiroom and Wi-Fi streaming are your bag

You’re tight on space

You shouldn’t buy it if…

You’re an unashamed bass head

For you, aesthetics are king

You can live with the standard Audioengine A1 bookshelf speakers

Audioengine A1-MR: Verdict

If you’re searching for a compact, cost-effective and effortlessly likeable pair of bookshelf monitors, the Audioengine A1-MR are a solid investment. Their likeable sound and dinky dimensions are undeniably appealing, while Wi-Fi and multiroom capabilities take them to the next level over the standard Bluetooth iteration.

Not only are the Audioengines fun-sized, but they’re also fun to listen to, and while they lack some real bass weight, a sub-out port does give you the option of whacking up the lower end if you’re desperate for more oomph. All in all, a very solid pair of bookshelf bargains.

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:100.00%';>

Audioengine A1-MR

The bottom line

Solid bookshelf speakers with a restrained-if-boring look and top-notch sound. With a degree in Law and Media and being a little too young to move onto the next step of his law career, James started writing from his bedroom about games, movies, tech, and anything else he could think of.
One of the best Bluetooth speakers is an essential piece of kit for listening to music around your home, but because they’re so portable you can also take one to events, parties or even on holiday.

There are plenty to choose from these days, all with similar specs, but audio tech brand Bang & Olufsen has a long legacy of fantastic devices and the Beosound A1 Bluetooth Speaker (2nd Gen) is no exception.

This small but mighty Bluetooth speaker boasts a peak power of 2x140 watts all contained within a sleek, small, puck-shaped speaker. But although Bang & Olufsen products always tend to sound fantastic, they’re rarely cheap.

That’s why we’re happy to see the Beosound A1 Bluetooth Speaker (2nd Gen) has had an $80 discount for the Amazon Prime Big Deal Days, meaning you can pick one up for $195.

What makes the B&O Beosound A1 Bluetooth Speaker one of the best?

Bang & Olufsen Beosound A1 (2nd Generation) | <del>$275</del> $195 at Amazon

If you’re searching for a new Bluetooth speaker that’s super portable and sounds fantastic, this $80 discount on the Beosound A1 is well worth it. View Deal

Speaker deals: Walmart | Best Buy | Amazon | Dell

With so many great Bluetooth speakers on the market – some for considerably cheaper – why should you consider B&O’s Beosound A1?

Well, it sounds good, really good. Especially for a speaker that’s so small and one that’s now available for under $200. The sound is expansive, the bass is weighty for the size and it’ll fare well, even in large or outdoor spaces. Which is hardly a surprise given Bang & Olufsen’s track record for creating great-sounding products – though it’s still notable considering the tiny dimensions of this speaker.

The Beosound A1 also looks great with a sleek exterior that we think has an almost Apple-esque aluminum chassis. There’s also an adjustable wrist strap here for listening on the move or attaching to things as you listen to keep it secure. The design also offers IP67 water and dust resistance, meaning this speaker is a whole lot more rugged than it may look.

Alexa integration is also built-in, which isn’t commonplace for a Bluetooth speaker. And there’s an impressive 18 hours of battery life here, although expect longer if you turn town the volume.

All in all, this is a Bluetooth speaker that’s filled with features and packs a punch. It might not be the cheapest device on the market, but with this latest discount it’s well worth considering.

With a single strum of Karl Sanders's distorted guitar, Nile’s That Which is Forbidden reverberates around my office room — taken aback, I reconsider the sound that Bluetooth speakers are able to pump out. There has long been a first generation of HomePod in the same spot, and a surround sound setup attached to the TV that sits behind me, but nothing this size has had the impact that the Sonos Move 2 brings.

The Sonos Move 2 is the sequel to the Sonos Move, a kind of semi-portable Bluetooth speaker that’s designed as more of a moveable Hi-Fi speaker rather than a party machine on the go. The Move 2 brings a new handle design, better sonic architecture inside, and, as I rapidly discovered, some very impressive presence for something that is relatively small.

Is it worth the high price, however, as it bumps dangerously close to the larger, spatial audio-equipped Era 300 from the same company? It’s a lofty price and an even loftier ask from Sonos to get customers to pay as much as the company wants them to, but it might just be worth the investment.

Sonos Move 2: Price and availability

The Sonos Move 2 is, for lack of a better term, expensive. At $449, it’s the same price as the bigger and Spatial Audio-equipped Sonos Era 300, which was already an expensive speaker. That makes it a great deal more than some of the competition at the same size and may tempt you elsewhere. There is plenty up this speaker's sleeve to keep you curious, however, as we’ll soon find out.

You can get one at any good audio retailer, or a big box retailer like Amazon. The Sonos Website is also an option, although the Move 2 is currently on backorder for the next few weeks there.

Sonos Move 2: Design and build

Borrowing from the design language of the Sonos Era 300 and 100, the Move 2 looks a very classy number. The grille hiding the audio gubbins stretches from the top panel of the device to the base, ending with a kind of rubberized panel that surrounds the bottom. The top panel, which houses the device's controls and microphones, also features a kind of soft-touch material, making the Move 2 feel more premium than it’s competition — and even the more smoothly finished Era 300.

I personally think that the Move 2 looks great — not quite as artful as the oddly sculptural Era 300, but its more pillar-like design is a fetching mix of minimal and unobtrusive. A pair of these on either side of a TV or on a couple of stands around the room would look good, for example, or just one tucked away in the corner.

It comes in three different colors — a kind of olivey Green, Black, and White. We’re testing the white version here so that it stands out against the black Era 300.

It’s slightly reminiscent of the HomePod 2, albeit missing the fabric mesh from around the edge of the chassis. Instead, the mesh on the Move is a metal fine grille, and it makes the whole package feel sleeker, and cold to the touch for that premium feel.

That metal grille also helps the Move 2 feel immaculately put together, with its excellent mix of materials. Fit and finish is also very impressive, especially around the back where the speaker has its handle and inputs. While the kind of divet handle on the back might not scream ‘I’M SECURE’, it's more than adequate for carrying the speaker around the house or into the garden to provide a barbeque with Apple Music.

While well made and ‘portable’, this is not a rugged Bluetooth speaker that you’d want to stick in your bag and take with you on hiking trips, however. It’s big, heavy, and it will get dented when treated with heavy hands or bashed around in a rucksack. This is a speaker for the home and the garden, and no more than that.

Sonos Move 2: Features

The Sonos Move 2 is more than just a Bluetooth speaker — it’s a smart speaker as well. The closest comparison is from the same manufacturer: The Sonos Era 100. They’re both about the same size, both lack Spatial Audio, and have a similar sonic architecture on the inside. Both connect over Wi-Fi so that you can listen to music, and both feature a Bluetooth connection for older devices.

The Move 2, however, has a built-in battery and a charging dock, so you can cart it around the house like a kind of smart speaker traveling circus. That battery, Sonos says, will last 24 hours, and my testing tells me that you’ll get around that depending on the volume of the speaker.

The battery is the central feature of the speaker, making a smart speaker something that can be physically, singularly, multi-room, rather than having several Wi-Fi-connected ones around the house.

The battery is the central feature of the speaker, making a smart speaker something that can be physically, singularly, multi-room.

The controls on top are straight from the Sonos Era 100 and 300, with a kind of touch-sensitive volume slider, a play pause button, skip forward and backward buttons, and a voice assistant button to round everything off. They are sensitive and work well enough as methods of controlling the speaker. You can also control the Move 2 with the Sonos App as well — although you might not want to.

The Sonos App remains, unfortunately, less than stellar, with a confusing user interface that makes sure you struggle to find exactly what you’re looking for. It logs in to all your music streaming services and then lets you search through them all once to find the music you want to listen to. It sounds useful, but the search function is fiddly, and finding music from a particular app is a troublesome affair.

The app does allow you to play with some of the cool ideas though. My favorite is ‘TruePlay Tuning’, which tunes the speaker to the space it's in so that it sounds the best no matter where it is. With the Sonos Era speakers, this is supposed to be a one-and-done thing — those speakers aren’t going anywhere quickly, so they don’t need retuning every five minutes. Their tuning setups were a lot more involved and saw you waving your iPhone in the air while various booms and rumbles played at insane volumes so that the room could be acoustically measured, and the sound changed to match.

No such thing with this speaker. The tuning system has to be different, for one, because this is a mobile speaker. You don’t want to have to go through the normal tuning rigamarole every time the Move is placed in a different room, so it needs to be streamlined, and easier to use. Easier to use this new version most definitely is; It’s a switch in the settings menu that you can turn on and off. I’m not entirely sure how it works, but I presume the speaker uses the mics on top of the device to see how the music sounds, and then adjusts from there.

However it works, it's an impressive feature that makes sure that music sounds great within my office, my bedroom, and the lounge, despite the fact the rooms are completely different sizes with different furniture in them.

Being a smart speaker, it also has voice assistant support on board, allowing you to control the speaker with either Sonos's own Sonos Voice control assistant, or Amazon's Alexa. I don’t use Amazon’s voice-activated smart servant, but I am now used to the Sonos alternative thanks to my Era 300. It works well enough, although I have had some issues with getting it to play radio stations with TuneIn — “Hey Sonos, play Jazz FM” I cry, only to fruitlessly hear back “here’s BBC worldwide” or just a simple “I can’t do that, please go through the Sonos App”. It’s disappointing on the Era, and it’s equally annoying here on the Move 2.

When you're out and about, you needn't worry about the app — without any kind of Wi-Fi signal to connect to, the speaker becomes a whole lot less smart. If you stretch it to the garden, then the connection will likely remain, but further than that and it's a Bluetooth option only.

Ignore the app for a second, and head back to the physical speaker. Spin the device around to the back and find the divet containing the handle, the power button, the Bluetooth button, and the mic mute switch. All feel solid, and do exactly what they need to do.

Connecting over Bluetooth is easy — press and hold the Bluetooth button to go into pairing mode, find the device in the Bluetooth devices list, and then connect up. Want to connect again? Just press the button once to go into Bluetooth mode, and previously connected devices will connect without any issues at all. To turn Bluetooth mode off, click the button again. Simple.

The USB-C port on the base of the device can be used to charge the speaker, as well as for line-in connections. For the latter, you’ll need to get an adapter from Sonos, but plug that in and you can hook up older devices like iPods, Vinyl players, and more. It’s a wicked addition and one that not many other speakers have.

To charge the speaker it’s as simple as dropping it into the charging base and watching the battery rise from 0-100 in three hours. That's a fast charge for such a big device, especially one with a 24-hour battery life. It’s a solid solution too, giving the speaker a kind of permanent home while making it easier to just pick up and take with you around the house, safe in the knowledge it's got some juice in it.

Sonos Move 2: Sound quality

Inside the Sonos Move 2 are two tweeters, double that found on the first Move, and a large woofer that sits underneath. It allows for a good approximation of stereo sound given that the two drivers are sat so close to each other on the top. The whole things mixes together for a pleasingly fun, engaging sound thats never fatiguing or too in your face. To most people it's going to sound great, and the slight lack of high end detail isn't going to cause any kind of issues. For those looking for a little more, it provides enough in the low-end and the mids so as to make the detail problem less attention grabbing.

Spin up the Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Chronos Feeds on His Children for some sixties-esque psychedelic vibes, and find the fuzz present and correct. The vocals are right in the center of the mix, surrounded by dual-tracked harmonies. The guitar as it melds into The American Guilt hits as hard as it should, the bass dancing in the background. The jingling bells overlay the track, the lo-fi drums laying solid rhythm with little trouble. There is perhaps a little detail lost to the warmth of the sound signature and it’s not as spacious as the larger Era 300, but it’s an engaging, entertaining experience.

It wouldn’t be a Tammy review unless there was some death metal — and it’s the song from the start, Nile’s That Which is Forbidden, that catches my ear. The uncomfortable strings are every bit as unnerving and unapproachable as they are meant to be, the guitars cutting through with a menacing precision and edge. The bass kicks with a mighty punch, and the drums underlay with a pummeling double bass barrage. Death metal is surprisingly hard for a speaker to get right, and the lack of low-end boominess that some are prone to is not present here. Sonos says it’s like being at a live show — while I might not agree completely, it’s a very impressive showing from a speaker that’s got to replicate a whole system in one.

Going back in time a few decades, and Jazz classic Blue in Green by Miles Davis sounds triumphant. The Move 2 does an excellent job of keeping up with Davis’ weaving trumpet lines, the double bass in the background weighty and purposeful. There’s some detail lost to the rolling cymbals in the background, but the piano is perfectly replicated and beautifully portrayed. The mids and the low end is a particular highlight, lending some depth and width to the recording — but that depth and width only goes so far. The soundstage is still tight, with instrument seperation restricted in the mix. We'll let it off on the latter part, however, given its an older stereo recording.

Overall, the speaker sounds good. It’s dynamic, engaging, and a lot of fun. Detail heads aren’t going to find a huge amount to complain about, but they might miss some of the top-end stuff in some tracks. Compared to the Era 300 it does lack a little thickness to its sound and some of the detail in high-end frequencies, but it is a smaller speaker, to be fair.

Sonos Move 2: Competition

While the Sonos Move 2 is an excellent speaker, it comes with it’s own very high price tag. At $449, the Sonos Move 2 is a great deal more expensive than other Bluetooth speakers and even comes in at the same price as the bigger and more sonically expressive Era 300.

Consider instead that the Era 300 is something almost entirely unique. Unlike a Bluetooth speaker, it is also smart, so you can connect to the internet and play streaming platforms directly on the device. It is a portable smart speaker — something that not many other companies make. The Bose Smart Speaker is a similar option, and it does cost slightly less, but that’s about it when it all boils down to it.

(Image credit: Future / Stephen Warwick)

If you want a speaker that you can take around the house all day as you potter about or have evening get-togethers in the garden, then the Move 2 is perfect — although if you’re not planning on moving it around, save some money and get the Era 100 instead. That’s a sonically similar speaker, minus the battery and charging cradle.

The HomePod is also a kind of competitor, but only in that it is a smart speaker. If you want Siri, then the HomePod line is still the only way to go, but you can’t take the Apple speaker into the garden unless you’ve got an unholy-length power extender.

Sonos Move 2: Verdict

The Sonos Move 2 is a wonderful piece of smart tech. It sounds good, looks great, and you can move it and its sweet sounds around the house. The Trueplay tuning is unique and seems to make an active difference, but the app continues to be slightly disappointing.

It is very, very expensive, but you do get what you pay for — just make sure you want what the package is offering. If you don’t think you’ll be moving it around the house, then you’ll be better off looking elsewhere. Perhaps the Era line, or even the HomePod might be better suited to your needs. If you're on the move though, the Move 2, as its name suggests, is fantastic.

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:100.00%';>

Sonos Move 2

A portable Era

The Sonos Move 2 takes everything that made the Era speakers brilliant and then sticks a whacking great battery in the case.
Maker of all things high-end audio Sonos has today unveiled its Move 2, the successor to its premium portable Move speaker.

With up to 24 hours of battery life, water resistance, and stereo sound, the Sonos Move 2 promises improvements inside and out, and with AirPlay 2 in tow, iPhone users will find it a perfect companion for on-the-go listening.

Priced at $449 or £449, the new Move 2 comes with “a completely overhauled acoustic architecture” featuring dual-tweeters and a precision-tuned woofer to help drive that bass even when you’re outdoors. It can use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth at the same time for more flexible streaming, especially when used in conjunction with an existing Sonos home entertainment system.

Sonos Move 2 - by the numbers

Perhaps the most impressive feature is the speaker’s 24-hour battery life (according to the press release), which is double that of the original so you’ll have plenty of juice for all-night parties, camping, and more. Interestingly, however, Sonos’ product page website says the 18Wh battery only “provides up to 10 hours of continuous playback on a single charge at moderate volumes”, suggesting battery life very much depends on how you use the speaker. Power is delivered by USB-C, and you can also use the speaker to charge your phone or other electronics.

Of course, you want an outdoor speaker to be durable, so the Sonos Move 2 comes with an IP56 rating so it can withstand “splashes,” as well as drops, rain, dirt, and sunshine. Sonos’ automatic Trueplay constantly optimizes sound for the world around you, a bit like Apple’s HomePod.

The new speaker, which is available for pre-order now and will ship from September 20, comes in three colors: black, white, and olive. It boasts touch and voice controls (Amazon Alexa) as well as a line-in. Included is Sonos’ wireless charging base, which provides a handy stand to rest the speaker on, and you can even replace the Sonos Move 2’s battery, should the need arise. With all that in mind, the Sonos Move 2 definitely looks like one of the best Bluetooth speakers for iPhone in 2023.

While it’s great to see a fantastic portable AirPlay 2 speaker on the market like the Move 2, it makes me yearn for the prospect of a portable HomePod. It sure would be pricey, but I think Apple could get the job done, and there would definitely be a market for it.

The Scosche BoomCan MS (MagSafe Speaker) might be the accessory you never knew you needed. Roughly the size and shape of a hockey puck, this Bluetooth speaker is easy to slip into a bag when you want to take your tunes to go.

I take this to the preschool where I work for our "dance parties" when I want to ramp up the volume a bit. Snap it on the the back of your best iPhone and it doubles as a stand. Buy two of these and place them on opposite sides of your room (or desk, or couch) for stereo sound.

The sound may not be as rich as high end speakers, nor as loud, but it's nice to have this speaker (or perhaps two.)

Scosche BoomCan MS: Price and availability

(Image credit: Karen S. It retails for $50 but can frequently be found on sale for about $42. There are two available colors: black and white.

Scosche BoomCan MS: What I like

(Image credit: Karen S. I like that the Scosche BoomCan MS is feather-light and tiny and fits just about anywhere. I could even stick it in a pocket.

The MagSafe feature is pretty cool, and sets this speaker apart from most. If you have a MagSafe-compatible iPhone (and handset from the iPhone 12 lineup forward) and MagSafe-compatible case, you can plop it onto the back of your iPhone. It makes a handy kickstand so you can prop up your iPhone as you're playing your music or watching videos. If you have an older phone, no worries: the speaker pairs with iPhones as far back as the iPhone 6 lineup. You just wouldn't use the MagSafe feature. You can also pair it with just about any smartphone on the market, it's not exclusive to iPhone.

(Image credit: Karen S. Freeman / iMore)

Another cool feature of the Scosche BoomCan MS is that you can actually pair two of them to the same iPhone for stereo sound. I did pair two of the speakers to my iPhone and tested them with a number of songs that are known to be good for testing stereo speakers. I was impressed at how well they did. I don't claim to be an audiophile, but they do effectively deliver stereo sound and fill the room with sound.

(Image credit: Karen S. Technically you could submerse it up to three feet under water for half an hour with no adverse effects, though I didn't test that. You can get up to five hours of playtime off of a single charge.

Scosche BoomCan MS: What I didn't like

(Image credit: Karen S. I had to reset, unpair, and re-pair them several times before I got them to pair together properly. But perhaps that's just me. Also perhaps on me: I managed to break off and lose the cover that fits over the USB-C charging port. A small thing, but it's a build quality issue.

The issue I read the most complaints about in online reviews is the sound quality and volume. You're not going to get a high-end audio experience with these, though for me they were sufficient. You're not going to get these loud enough for a big party, or outdoor event. I don't imagine serious audiophiles purchasing something like this. The Scosche BoomCan MS isn't crazy expensive but it's not very cheap, either. You're paying for its specific features: MagSafe compatibility, ultra-portability, and ability to pair for stereo sound.

Scosche BoomCan MS: Competition

The obvious competition in the "little Bluetooth speaker that you can pair for stereo sound" department is the small but mighty HomePod mini. I enjoy music but I'm no serious audiophile; I'm not looking to make my house shake. I'd take this speaker anywhere: the schools I work in, the pool, the beach, wherever. The BoomCan works just fine with older iPhone and other smartphones as well, but why pay for MagSafe compatibility you'd never use? On the other end of the spectrum, if you are serious about sound quality and have high standards for your speakers, you're better off investing in a higher-end setup.

But maybe you're like me, and you want a handy little speaker that you can snap onto your MagSafe-compatible iPhone and use as a kickstand. In that case, the Scosche BoomCan MS is right up your alley.

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:100.00%';>

Scosche BoomCan MS

Little wonder

This tiny Bluetooth speaker snaps onto the back of your MagSafe phone and acts as a kickstand while it plays your favorite tunes.
Adding a soundbar to your home theater setup can be a great way of adding some life to movies and games, and now you can do it while saving a decent chunk of money at the same time. That's with Amazon now offering the Samsung HW-B550 soundbar for just $167.99. We've been reviewing soundbars for years and this is one of the most popular around.

That price represents a 40% discount on the original price of almost $280 which is not to be sniffed at. This is part of the ongoing Amazon Prime Day fun and that's important to remember because it won't last forever.

In fact, Amazon will call time on the Prime Day festivities this evening so ordering soon is probably a good idea if you're interested in adding this soundbar to your setup. This is also a lightning deal which means that the number of units available is limited, too.

Samsung soundbar with 40% off

Samsung HW-B550 soundbar | <del>$280</del> $167.99 on Amazon

Upgrade the sound of your home theater by adding this popular Samsung soundbar to your setup. <br>
Having grown up using PCs and spending far too much money on graphics card and flashy RAM, Oliver switched to the Mac with a G5 iMac and hasn't looked back. Since then he's seen the growth of the smartphone world, backed by iPhone, and new product categories come and go. Current expertise includes iOS, macOS, streaming services, and pretty much anything that has a battery or plugs into a wall.<br>
<br>
Oliver also covers mobile gaming for iMore, with Apple Arcade a particular focus. He's been gaming since the Atari 2600 days and still struggles to comprehend the fact he can play console quality titles on his pocket computer.<br>

Passionate about apps and the developer ecosystem, Oliver is always keen to try out the hottest new things to hit the App Store — and some that haven't made it there yet, too.</p> </dc:description>

While there are some iPhone apps that have proper native HomePod support, not all of them do. And when iOS 17 ships this fall, none of that will matter.

That's because iOS 17 will allow non-HomePod apps to automatically send their audio to any HomePod on the same Wi-Fi network using nothing more than the power of Siri.

What's more, Apple says that developers won't need to do any extra work for this to happen — all apps that already support SiriKit Media will work just fine right out of the gate.

Sounds good

Apple confirmed the news as part of a larger developer session that discussed how apps could be integrated with the HomePod.

According to that video, people will be able to ask their HomePod to play audio from an app on their iPhone using Siri. Assuming the app supports SiriKit, the audio should begin to play via AirPlay automatically.

Apple goes on to say that the HomePod and iPhone do not need to be in close proximity for this new feature to work, but they will need to be on the same Wi-Fi connection at the time of the request. Apple's example has an iPhone on charge in a bedroom while a HomePod in the living room plays audio without issue.

The HomePod is of course one of the best HomeKit speakers around, although there are others. But you'll need a HomePod with Siri support for any of this to work. You'll also need iOS 17 and an iPhone, with Apple's next big software update expected to be released to the public in or around September.

That's also when we expect the iPhone 15 lineup to be announced, too. As for compatible HomePods, we have to assume that the HomePod 2 and HomePod mini will be good to go, while it's likely the original HomePod will also work just fine.

<br>
<br>
Oliver also covers mobile gaming for iMore, with Apple Arcade a particular focus. He's been gaming since the Atari 2600 days and still struggles to comprehend the fact he can play console quality titles on his pocket computer.<br>
<br>
Passionate about apps and the developer ecosystem, Oliver is always keen to try out the hottest new things to hit the App Store — and some that haven't made it there yet, too.</p> </dc:description>

Apple doesn't make a portable speaker to go with its very un-portable HomePod. But if it made one like the Bang & Olufsen Beosound A5 it'd instantly be the best portable Bluetooth speaker yet.

That's because the Beosound A5 just looks gorgeous with its two color options. There's a black anthracite aluminum version with a dark oak wood speaker cover that looks absolutely stunning. Then there's the natural aluminum version with a woven paper fiber front. They both look good, although we know which our fave is.

The Beosound A5 doesn't just look good, though. It has the features to back it up.

Sounds good to us

Those features of course start with support for AirPlay 2, which is always a good jumping-off point. Then there's also support for Chromecast and Spotify Connect. You probably wouldn't get that if this had an Apple logo on it, though.

In terms of innards, there's a 5.25-inch woofer and a pair of 2-inch midrange speakers. An additional three-quarter-inch tweeter handles the highs. But really, we're only here for those looks.

"Beosound A5 is our new high-end portable speaker which combines Bang & Olufsen's long-standing approach to timeless design with our vision on sound for the future", says VP of Product Marketing, Michael Henriksson via press release. "We're excited to collaborate with GamFratesi for the first time, to create two speaker designs that are rooted in a Scandinavian aesthetic with a distinct design signature on their own".

That Scandinavian aesthetic doesn't come cheap, though. There's some very Apple-like pricing going on with the dark wood version available for $1,149 and the cheaper Nordic weave setting buyers back $1,049. Neither is what we'd call cheap but oh boy just look at them.

It's surely only a matter of time before Apple launches something like this under the HomePod name. And let's just hope it looks something like this one.
