As we head towards WWDC 2014 we thought it would be fun to look back at Apple World Wide Developer Conferences past, what they introduced, and what impact they made. Today let's take a look at WWDC 2012, where Apple took the wraps off of Mountain Lion, iOS 6 and new MacBook models...

While WWDC 2011 had been something of a disappointment for hardware mavens, 2012 roared back with a vengeance. It was at that show that Apple introduced the first MacBook Pros equipped with Retina displays. The new MacBook Pros were a revelation, mixing the best of the MacBook Air — flash storage, thinness and lightness — with the power of a MacBook Pro, all mated to the highest-resolution display ever seen in laptop history.

Speaking of the MacBook Air, that also got a makeover in time for WWDC. Ivy Bridge processors made the cut for the new generation of MacBook Airs, with 4 GB RAM as a bare minimum and SSDs up to 512 GB, giving more RAM and more storage than before. USB 3.0, a higher-resolution FaceTime camera, and other features made the lightweight laptops ideal for road warriors looking to shave a couple of pounds off their backpacks and messenger bags. The "old" MacBook Pro wasn't ready to go in the dustbin yet, either. Apple also updated that device with faster processors, better graphics chips and more.

Apple also took the wraps off of OS X Mountain Lion, the last of its "big cat"-themed operating systems. Interoperability between iOS and OS X had become a key issue for Apple product owners and Apple was anxious to reduce the pain points therein. Apple also replaced the long-in-the-tooth "iChat" messaging service with the rebranded "Messages" app, instead. And Notification Center, up until then an iOS feature, found its way to OS X for the first time.

Other features included support for AirPlay mirroring on an Apple TV, Power Nap (to enable Macs to update even while in sleep mode), improved social media integration and more.

iOS 6 was also introduced at the show. Apple ditched Google Maps - until then the service it had integrated into its Maps app - with other data, a move that would initially prove disastrous as people got wrong directions, map data was rendered incorrectly and more. Passbook promised easier transactions using your iPhone. Facebook integration was improved and Siri saw a makeover too.

One of the more intriguing aspects of both iOS 6 and OS X Mountain Lion is the way in which Apple is further enabling intelligent background activity when iPhones, iPads, and Macs are otherwise "asleep".

People hate waiting

Tapping a button or activating a gesture, only to have to wait for data or content to refresh or download, to have to stare at seemingly endless spinners and slowly crawling status bars, simply isn't a great user experience. It makes us wait, and people hate waiting.

A great user experience is is tapping or gesturing for content and that content instantly popping up because it's already available, waiting for us.

iCloud and Exchange do this already. Your email, events, addresses, etc. arrive even when your iPhone and iPad are sleeping. When you go to Mail, Calendar, Contacts, etc. all the data is already there and up to date.

Newsstand does this already. Newsstand-enabled apps "wake-up", check for new content, and then download and refresh magazine an newspaper subscriptions automatically.

That's the appeal of push technology and automatic updates -- users don't have to wait seconds, minutes, or longer for data and content to become available.

Power napping

With Power Nap in OS X Mountain Lion, Apple is bringing a similar level of service to the Mac, and adding several more. In addition to the other core iCloud apps -- Reminders, Notes, and Photo Stream, with Power Nap, system updates will automatically download in the background while your Mac is asleep. So will App Store updates. Time Machine backups will take place. Find my Mac will update its location. 

It all happens quietly and with a minimum of power drain. Our data simply refreshes while we're off getting other things done.

Podcast app

Apple is in investigating other methods of making devices "work for us" while we're not using them, and other types of content that can be refreshed automatically in the background. 

for example, today you have to manually go to iTunes and start a download and then wait for it to finish, or open an App Store app that can then wake up and start a download.

iMore recently heard there were plans for automatic background audio and video downloads. If battery and connectivity levels allowed, just like Newsstand, new content would download all on their own. 

Rumors of a new, separate Podcast app from Apple could showcase just exactly that kind of functionality. Once subscribed to a show, Podcast could wake up and download it for you, and have it ready and waiting, instead of requiring a button tap to initiate the process, keeping you waiting for it.

"Just working"

Mobile will be constrained by greater power and connectivity concerns than desktop for the foreseeable future, but it's not hard to imagine iOS eventually doing all the same kinds of background activity OS X Mountain Lion will be doing this year. iOS is already doing automatic iCloud backups. Automatic system and app updates, among other things, might not be that far away.

While we haven't heard anything specific, the potential of these kinds of processes are phenomenal. Instead of requiring risky online maps or huge offline pre-loads, iOS could silently fetch and cache a radius of maps around you, offering more reliable and efficient near-line and just-in-time navigation.

Anything that requires the management of large blobs of data or content could be handled this way. Apple products are famously said to "just work". These types of Apple services could be seen as "just working".

iOS 6 and beyond

How much of this is already in iOS 6, how much more could be announced at the presumed October iPhone 5 event, and how much will come in future updates only Apple and NDA-bound developers know for sure. But it's getting increasingly hard to imagine is not coming.

Make all the Skynet or the Matrix jokes you like, but there could soon come a time when all our Apple devices busily get to work handling all the little things, leaving us free to get the big things done.

Our second day at WWDC 2012 has passed and boy was it a busy day! We briefly attended Indie Dev Lab, met with and interviewed several developers, attended multiple parties and more!

I said our day was busy, but I will admit to sleeping in until about 9:30a (oops!) before hitting the street with Rene. Before officially beginning our day, we hit up Starbucks to grab a bite to eat and fuel-up on caffeine.

On our way to Indie Dev Lab, we had a quick chat with Luc Vandal, the creator of VNC client Screens, in the Moscone Center. Great guy!

At Indie Dev Lab, Rene and I got to talk to a few developers and see demos of the apps, including a video demo (coming soon!) of a new PDF management and annotating app called Cabinet [$0.99 - Download Now].

We also got see the beginning of Jay Freeman's (@Saurik) (the creator of jailbreak app store Cydia) presentation on the business side of app development including how to handle payments, marketing and, in general, how to make money off your apps.

Before our next appointment, Rene and I made enjoyed a few drinks with the Nickelfish crew at a local pub then headed over to Jillian's across the street from the Moscone Center and met with Chris Harris, the App Director of HarperCollins Publishers, the makers of Brian Cox's Wonders of the Universe for iPad apps.

Next on the agenda was to meet with App Cubby's David Barnard over tea. We discussed iOS 6, the new MacBook Pro, David's thoughts on the App Store, and more.

The tea at Samovar Tea Lounge was quite delicious!

Before saying goodbye, we coaxed David into an interview -- of course!

After meeting with David, Rene and I had a few minutes to stop by Starbucks and get some writing done.

For the evening, we had a several different meetings and parties scheduled, so Rene and I split ways. While Rene met with Phill Ryu, the developer of Clear, I headed to The View at the top of the Marriott for a little meet-and-greet party with marketing company Appular.

The views were amazing from up there.

After Rene and I were done with our individual events, we met up at The W hotel with Seth for Jim Dalrymple's (@jdalrymple) "The Beard" party which featured a live karaoke band and lots of beer.

It didn't take much for a couple girls from AppAdvice to convince Rene to sing a Green Day song with them.

At one point, Jim came on stage and proclaimed that the "host-must-sing-rule" was dumb and that he was going to play guitar for us instead.

He played with the band and was actually really quite awesome.

After Jim's Party, Rene, Seth, and I met up with Dieter Bohn for some drinks. It was great catching up and discussing iOS 6, MacBooks, and other mobile platforms with an old friend.

As we were heading back to our hotels and thinking that our day was over, we were pleasantly surprised by one last "event" -- witnessing Apple employees setting up the new MacBook Pro displays at the Stockton Street Apple Store.

Whew! What a day!

At WWDC, Apple proclaimed iOS 6 would introduce over 200 new features when released this fall, and that what we saw yesterday was just a small sampling. We've got plenty of posts going over the big features, but there are also a handful of slides that were positively riddled with features that they just didn't have time to go over.

Additionally, there were lots of smaller features that either just got a passing mention, were folded into some of the talk about OS X, or weren't referenced at all. That said, let's tear apart the keynote address (which was recently made available in HD on iTunes, by the way) and pick out every teeny tiny iOS 6 feature we can.

Siri integration in your car will be coming soon via Eyes Free integration. Apple has already received  commitments from several car manufacturers including BMW, GM, Chrysler, Land Rover, Jaguar, Audi, Toyota, Honda, Mercedes, and more to build it right into their vehicles. Eyes Free will link into your car via a button by the steering wheel that will allow you to communicate with Siri while driving without ever having to take your hands off the wheel.

Eyes Free will also expand its language support across several countries including Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, Italian, German, Korean and French for Canadian users.

The new version of the MacBook Air will feature updated processors including Intel Core Ivy Bridge processors up to 2.0 dual core i7, which is a significant bump from their current line.

Apple is boasting up to 60% faster graphics and even more flash memory, up to 512 GB. The MacBook Air will also have support for USB 3 which is up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0. Support for both USB 2 and 3 will be built into one port. The FaceTime camera is also being updated to 720p.

The 11" and 13" MacBook Airs will be priced starting at $999 and $1099 respectively. They'll start shipping today.

June 11. That's the date we've long suspected but just this week had confirmed. Apple's 2012 World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) is now official hurtling towards us (or us towards it). But it's not the only things going on this week, so let's get to it.

WWDC 2012 and iOS 6

Apple announced WWDC 2012 at 5:30am Cupertino, California (PDT) time, less than 50 days before the June 11 start date, with a $1600 ticket price, and it still sold out in 2 hours. Many developers and interested parties had created scripts that would look for any change in Apple's WWDC website and alert them immediately. Others signed up for text message notification services. Still others networked with friends, family, peers, and others to keep constant vigil and light the web on fire the moment tickets went live.

Some got them, some didn't. No one seemed thrilled with the process. Probably not even at Apple. The list of problems are easy to identify -- too much demand, not enough availability, and a high stress, no-notice acquisition process. Solutions are harder to come by.

For gadget enthusiasts, however, the only real problem is anticipation. With WWDC comes Apple's annual keynote. In years past it's introduced the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4. Last year it introduced iOS 5 and iCloud, but no new hardware.

And this year?

iMore has heard that, once again, there won't be any new iOS devices this summer, but like last year there's a lot of software for Apple to spotlight. No doubt we'll see OS X Mountain Lion get it's first public demonstration. We should also see iOS 6, or whatever Apple calls the next version of its mobile operating system. There was no iOS SDK event like there was in 2008, 2009, and 2010, so just like 2011 we're expecting WWDC to see the launch of the first iOS 6 beta.

And that should be interesting to say the least.

Google Drive

Google Drive is finally here. Unlike Nokia Drive, which is a turn-by-turn navigation service, Google Drive is a cloud storage service. (English is funny, but not as funny as branding in English.) Based on how it's currently set up, it could also be called Google Docs+, but at this point I'm just happy it's not Google Play Drive.

And it's not bad. Prices are more than competitive and if there's anything Google knows, it's how to store data at scale. Some might have philosophical problems with the way Google monetizes all that stored data, but nothing's really free. If you don't want to pay with money, you're going to pay with access to your demographic and other data. Everyone has to decide from themselves what's a fair price and how they're willing to pay it.

Personally, I'm not switching away from Dropbox any time soon. While Google Drive is cheaper, Dropbox has momentum. All my stuff is already in there, most of the apps I use are already integrated with it, and Google Drive isn't better enough to make switching everything over anywhere near worth it.

I will add it to the mix, however, much as I did iCloud. Right now I'll use it as a big online scratch disk and see if anything further evolves from there.

A lot of that will depend on how long it takes the iPhone and iPad apps to ship, and how good they are. Sadly, I've come not to expect much...

Why can't great companies make great mobile apps?

Let's be perfectly blunt -- most of Google's iOS apps have been terrible at launch and haven't improved much since. About the nicest thing you could say about them is they make sure Facebook isn't alone in buggy apps from major corporations that should know better and be better. And I don't get it. These are two of the biggest, smartest, most talented, and certainly wealthiest technology companies in the world and they can't make a killer iOS app between them?

Indie developers, unimaginably more limited in resources, literally code circles around Facebook and Google when it comes to mobile. Look at Tweetbot. Look at Twitterrific. Look at Tweetie (before Twitter bought it). Look at webOS, which cash-strapped Palm put together on a shoe-string and a dream. Facebook for iPhone was mortally wounded when the original developer, Joe Hewitt, left the project and while it's improved slowly over time, it's not where it needs to be or should be. Not by a long shot.

Google has bought iOS apps (and canned them), Facebook bought Instagram, but neither has shown they have what it takes to transition from web companies to mobile companies. They're mobile immigrants, not mobile natives, and they're not enculturating well.

But mobile isn't just their future, it's the future. They need to do whatever it takes to nail mobile apps, and now.

Google has a chance with Google Drive for iOS to show us they're more than a wafer thin UIWebView wrapper and a terrible web-based authentication system. I sincerely hope they do.

They've cut the hardline

Long week and they won't be getting shorter any time soon. Time to find another exit.

Apple has announced that it's World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) will take place this year from June 11 - 15, 2012. As usual, WWDC will be held at Moscone West in San Francisco, CA. Tickets are $1599 and will likely go FAST. (They sold out in 10 hours last year.)

In order to attend, you have to be a paid member of the iOS Developer Program, iOS Developer Enterprise Program, or Mac Developer Program, and you have to be 13 years of age or older.

WWDC is highlighted by a keynote presentation that in years past included the introduction of the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4. Last year's WWDC 2011 keynote didn't include any hardware announcements, but did include the unveiling of iOS 5 and iCloud, and the release of the iOS 5 beta. It was also Steve Jobs' last Apple keynote appearance.

We don't expect a new iPhone at this year's WWDC either, but we'll hopefully see a developer preview of iOS 6, and perhaps more on iCloud and associated services as well.
