During Apple's WWDC 2015 keynote event today, team members from developer Epic Games showed off a Mac demo of Fortnite. The upcoming action-sandbox game will be released for the Mac, with a beta due for release sometime this fall.

The live demo showed the game running on Epic's Unreal Engine 4. Fortnite centers on players building their fortress by day and defending it from attacking monsters.

Epic used Apple's Metal graphics API to help develop the Mac version of Fortnite, and using Metal allowed for the game's development team to cut down on the CPU's use by as much as 70 percent. That improved efficiency should help to increase battery life and reduce heat for laptops when running the game.
