Get the original Dungeon Keeper for free, no strings attached, but hurry!

You may have heard about the controversy surrounding EA's new free to play mobile game Dungeon Keeper — critics don't like the game's heavy-handed reliance on pay-to-play. There's more to it than that, however — it's a beloved classic strategy game from another era of PC gaming. GOG.com is celebrating its legacy this weekend by giving Dungeon Keeper away. It runs on both Macs and Windows computers.

Originally released in 1997, Dungeon Keeper is a strategy game created by legendary designer Peter Molyneux (maker of Populous, Black & White, and the Fable series). You are the titular Dungeon Keeper, responsible for laying out and managing the operations of the dungeon. You have to create a basic infrastructure — lairs, a hatchery for food chickens, and a treasury to store gold — then you populate the dungeon with different monsters and demons.

GOG.com is giving away the original Dungeon Keeper, paired with its Deeper Dungeons expansion (billed as "Dungeon Keeper Gold") and is also offering a special price on Dungeon Keeper 2, available for $1.49 (75 percent off). It's all part of special Valentine's Day promotion that ends on Sunday, February 16th at 10:59 AM GMT.

Dungeon Keeper Gold runs on both Macs and Windows computers. Dungeon Keeper 2 is just for Windows, however.
