How to check your passenger Uber rating

In case you didn't know this, the popular transportation service Uber has a rating system. You can rate your driver and your driver can rate you. This system is intended to keep drivers and passengers on their best behavior (though things don't always work out that way).

Your passenger rating could have an effect on whether a driver is willing to pick you up or not. If your rating is low, and it is late on a Saturday night, a driver might decide to skip your request.

You can check your passenger rating via Uber's app. The feature is buried in the Help section, but you can find it if you know where to look.

I've also got a few tips for you on how to get or keep a high rating with Uber.

How to check your Uber passenger rating

Do you think you have a five-star average? Do your requests get skipped over late on Friday nights? You can find out the truth.

  1. Launch the Uber app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the menu icon in the upper left corner of the screen. It looks like three lines (☰).
  3. Tap Help.

  1. Tap Account and Payment.
  2. Tap Account Settings and Ratings.
  3. Tap I'd like to know my rating.

  1. Tap Submit.
  2. Tap OK when finished.

There is no way to see what individual drivers rated your trip, nor is there a way to see why you may have a low rating. The score is based on an average of what all drivers have rated you.

How to rate your Uber driver

Your Uber drivers can rate whether you were a decent ride, but you can also provide feedback on your experience.

Note: You can't rate your driver in the Uber app. It can only be done via the trip receipt that is emailed to you, so don't delete that email until you've rated your driver.

  1. Open the email from Uber Receipts with the subject line, "Your [day and time] trip with Uber."
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the receipt and tap or click the rating you wish to give under Rate Your Driver.

It is important to point out that the star you tap or click is the rating the driver receives. You won't be redirected to a web page where you can then rate the driver. So, make sure you tap the right star within the email.

How to get or maintain a high passenger star rating with Uber

There is no guarantee that you will receive a five-star rating from your driver, but there are a few things you can do to be a stellar passenger and hopefully make your driver think you are worthy of the coveted honor.

  • Be at the location you requested the pick up for: Double-check the pin or address to make sure you are where you say you'll be and don't wander off. Make sure you are visible on the sidewalk and keep a lookout for the car. Your driver will be looking for someone that is looking for him or her.
  • Be ready when the driver arrives: Don't call for a ride, and then finish your drink with your buddy. Wait for the car outside. Don't make your driver wait for you, not even for a minute. Don't even call for a car until you are out the door and waiting on the sidewalk. Seriously. Don't make them wait.
  • Don't eat in the car: Even if you are the type of person to eat in your own car or a friend's car, assume that the person driving you around is a perfectionist that doesn't want a single crumb or lingering smell left behind when you leave. It doesn't matter if you can eat an entire croissant without dropping a flake; just don't eat in the car. That goes for drinking, too (especially alcohol).
  • Don't act like a belligerent drunk, even if you are: One of the best reasons to take an Uber is because you had a little too much at the party and want a quick, inexpensive ride home. You might be three sheets to the wind, but you should act like you've been picked up by your mom. Sober up as much as possible during the trip and act like a respectable member of society.
  • Don't try to fit extra people into the car: If you have more than four people in your party, use an uberXL instead. It is unsafe to drive around with a bunch of people piled in, sitting on top of each other, and it will likely annoy a driver that you didn't just order a larger car.
  • Don't get into the wrong car: In some places, multiple Uber cars are picking up multiple passengers. Make sure you have the right car. Ask the driver's name and give him or her yours. You can also check for the make, model, and license plate of the car that is set to pick you up.
  • Strike up a conversation: Getting an Uber ride is not like taking a taxi. Most Uber drivers have full or part-time jobs somewhere else and are giving people rides for a few extra dollars and new experiences. Someone should always sit in the front seat to make the driver feel like he or she can join in the conversation. Make sure to include the driver in at least some of your chats. Ask questions. Give answers. Don't sit in the back seat with your nose pressed against your iPhone the entire time. Think of your short time together as the start of a new friendship. See what happens.
