The iPad Pro will be available on March 31, 2016.

Why did Apple add a new 256GB option?

During the keynote for the new iPad Pro, Apple CEO Tim Cook remarked that customers are increasingly using the iPad Pro as their main computers, and that justifies adding a larger 256GB option, for people who insist on storing large files locally.

Apple also added a 256GB option for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, which retails for a very laptop-like $1429 for the Wi-Fi model and $1629 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model.
