Nintendo surprised many back in September 2016 when it announced that it was bringing its most famous character, Mario, to the iPhone and iPad with Super Mario Run. The company's take on runner games will see Mario run, jump, and bounce across colorful worlds, collecting coins and jumping on Goombas.
Here's everything you need to know before Super Mario Run hits the App Store.
Just what is Super Mario Run?
Super Mario Run is a runner game starring everyone's favorite plumber, Mario. It will arrive in the App Store for iPhone and iPad on December 15, 2016. You can sign up to be notified when the game is available right here.
How do I play?
Running in Super Mario Run is very simple: Mario runs automatically. You just need to tap the screen to jump, while tapping and holding will see you jump a bit higher.
Just as you would expect in a Mario game, you'll be able to collect coins, gathering as many as you can for a higher score by the time you reach the end of each level. You can also jump and bounce on enemies, and hit ? blocks to gain power-ups like growth mushrooms.
What kind of game modes does Super Mario Run have?
World Tour is Super Mario Run's single-player mode. It features 24 new courses designed for one-handed gameplay, spread across six different worlds.
If you want to compete against your friends, you've got Toad Rally. This mode lets you show off your stylish moves and go for the high score, competing against people across the world. Fill your gauge, and you can start a Coin Rush, which challenges you to collect as many of the coins that appear as you can. You'll be cheered on by a crowd of Toads, and you'll be able to gather some of those for the game's last mode.
The coins you collect and Toads you gather will help you out in Kingdom Builder. In this mode, you'll create your own kingdom. Using what you've earned from Toad Rally, you can add new buildings and decorations to your kingdom to give the game a more personal touch.
Where will Super Mario Run launch?
Nintendo says that the game will launch in 151 countries on December 15. Super Mario Run will also support the following languages: English, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Russian and traditional Chinese.
What will this game cost me?
Super Mario Run will be free to download, with limited access to the games three modes. To unlock the full game, you'll need to make a one-time payment of $9.99.
