How fast is your iPad 3G on AT&T?

How fast is your iPad Wi-Fi + 3G on AT&T? Dieter is testing his out and the results so far don't seem too shabby. We've seen the plastic top strip meant to allow better, stronger radio signals and we've seen about all the details in the iPad 3G tear down, but real-world results are what matter here so run your favorite speed test, website or app, tell us which one your run, and let us know your results.

iPad Wi-Fi + 3G: torn down

Bookending the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G unboxing from earlier today is the other classic staple of geekdom: the tear-down. As usual iFixit did the deed, and here's what they uncovered:

  • There are actually FIVE antennas in this iPad. Two antennas handle the cell reception -- one is in the RF window on top, the other attaches to the LCD frame. A single GPS antenna is also housed in the RF window on top. Just like the iPad Wi-Fi, there are two antennas that handle Wi-Fi / Bluetooth connectivity, one in the Apple logo and another to the left of the dock connector.

How to setup an AT&T account for cellular data on iPad 3G

Curious how to setup an AT&T account on Apple's iPad Wi-Fi + 3G so you can get going with cellular data? Dieter's going to take you through it, step by step, in fine video form after the break.

  1. Either tap the popup that asks if you want to setup a 3G on startup, or tap the Settings app.
  2. Go to Cellular Data
  3. Tap view account (and then wait, it takes a while).
  4. Enter your user personal info and credit cards details and create a login.
  5. Choose your plan, $14.99 for 256mb or $29.99 for unlimited
  6. Remember, it rolls-over automatically so you'll get billed again next month!
  7. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the terms of service (seriously?) and tap to agree.
  8. Add international data if you're a traveler.
  9. Wait for them to notify you when it's complete.
  10. Once you get the notification, you are good to go!
  11. (If you want to, you can go back to Settings and make changes to your account).

Done? Done! Let us know how it worked for you!

New AT&T SIM cards to be compatible with old iPhones, new iPads and iPhones

It looks like AT&T's new SIM cards will be double-porferated, meaning you'll be able to pop it out along the MiniSIM lines to fit in current and previous generation iPhones (and most other phones), or along the smaller MicroSIM lines to fit the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G and if the leaks are correct, the 4th generation iPhone to boot.

iPad Wi-Fi + 3G orders preparing to ship!

Michael wrote in to tell us (and show us, see above) that his iPad Wi-Fi + 3G order was finally prepared to ship, and since Apple has previously confirmed they'd deliver on April 30, we'd say it's none too soon.

Wi-Fi only iPads arrived on April 3 in the US while international iPad Wi-Fi and iPad Wi-Fi + 3G are set for pre-order on May 10 and delivery "late May" (which we'll take to mean May 31 unless pleasantly surprised otherwise).

Anyone else get a notice? Anyone get an actual confirmed shipment and tracking number yet?
