Verizon Iphone

Today Apple released both iOS 4.3.2 and iOS 4.2.7. The first was for almost all iOS devices except the Verizon iPhone. The second was for the Verizon iPhone. Like iPad last year, which shipped with iOS 3.2 and didn't unify with the rest of the iOS family until iOS 4.2, the Verizon iPhone shipped with iOS 4.2.5/4.2.6 and won't unify with the rest of the iOS family until some future update, perhaps not until iOS 5/5.x.

Yet despite this fragmentation -- or more properly bifurcation -- of the iOS software, Apple still delivered both updates at the same time, across the world, and across both major US carriers, AT&T and Verizon.

iOS 4.3 for Verizon iPhone -- missing in action?

Apple just announced iOS 4.3 was coming March 11... but didn't mention the Verizon iPhone in the list of supported devices. Was that just an oversight, are we overly sensitive, or will the CDMA radio stack require some additional time for Apple to get iOS 4.3 out to the device?

It's not like Verizon owners will miss personal hotspot, but if it does take longer we'll miss Apple's previously rock-solid record of delivering updates to all devices, all at once.

Again, maybe we're over reacting so more as this develops...

Verizon CFO Fran Shammo told investors today that Verizon Wireless will be moving to tiered data plans as early as this summer, no longer offering the unlimited data plan Verizon iPhone users have enjoyed since Apple's smartphone came to the network last month.

Verizon Communications Inc. will stop offering unlimited data plans for Apple Inc.’s iPhone as soon as this summer and switch to a tiered pricing offering that can generate more revenue and hold the heaviest users in check.

Bugs: AT&T iPhone can send emoji to Verizon iPhone, but not the other way around

A rather interesting bug has been discovered: emoji sent over SMS between Verizon iPhone and AT&T iPhones is not recognized both ways - Verizon can receive from AT&T, but not vice versa.

When a Verizon iPhone texts emoji to an AT&T iPhone, all that is received is a bunch of random characters. However, a Verizon iPhone will recognize emoji sent from an AT&T iPhone with no problem. This inability to interpret emoji is only an issue with the messages app, however. An AT&T iPhone can recognize emoji elsewhere, like email and twitter, just fine - even if the emoji was sent from a Verizon iPhone.

Verizon iPhone didn't meet initial sales expectations?

BGR is reporting that, according to one of their Apple sources, the first week of sales for the new Verizon iPhone were purportedly smaller than Apple and Verizon expected. The figures were drawn from five Apple retails stores covering the first five days of availability, including two "very, very prominent" locations and show a dwindling margin between AT&T and Verizon sales after the first 48 hours of availability:
