IMORE PRESENTS

THE BEST OF 2013 READER AWARDS

2013 marked a time of great change for Apple. The introduction of iOS 7 changed the way Apple's mobile products looked and worked. New iPhones and iPads used the first 64-bit processor ready for mobile devices. Touch ID changed the way we secure our iPhones. OS X 10.9 Mavericks provided new features and new efficiencies. New laptop Macs may have looked the same as last year's models but consume far less battery power for longer time on the road. And Apple exited the year with a stunning new design for its powerful Mac Pro. We're not sure what 2014 has in store but we can count on being delighted and amazed, because it's Apple bringing it to us.

2013 also gave us some great new apps and accessories, along with brand new versions of past delights. You nominated your favorites. We sorted through the finalists. In the end, nearly 40,000 votes were cast. Without further ado, here they are, the winners of iMore's Best of 2013!

DEVICES

THE BEST IPHONE OF 2013

iPhone 5s

Runner-up: iPhone 5c

THE BEST IPAD OF 2013

iPad Air

Lighter, thinner and equipped with the same powerful A7 processor as the iPhone 5s, the iPad Air reinvents Apple's flagship tablet device with its first major redesign since 2011 - definitely worth the wait.

APPS

THE BEST IOS EDUCATION APP OF 2013

iBooks

Runner-up: Duolingo

THE BEST IOS ENTERTAINMENT APP OF 2013

Netflix

Netflix has successfully navigate the transition from DVD and Blu-ray mail-order rentals to become the 800 pound gorilla of the streaming market; they bolstered that position in 2013 by providing HD content and AirPlay streaming via their iOS app.

Runner-up: YouTube

THE BEST IOS HEALTH APP OF 2013

THE BEST IOS KIDS APP OF 2013

Twitter can be enormously useful and fun but enormously overwhelming at the same time, and Tweetbot helps by managing multiple timelines, custom media services and more.

Runner-up: Facebook

THE BEST IOS SPORTS APP OF 2013

ESPN SportsCenter

Runner-up: Yahoo! Sports

THE BEST IOS UTILITY APP OF 2013

Dropbox

Runner-up: 1Password

GAMES

THE BEST OVERALL IOS GAME OF 2013

Candy Crush Saga

It's partly the colorful, tasty looking confectionary treats in Candy Crush Saga, partly the obstacles and puzzles you need to complete to get to the next level, and partly the powerups like boosters and charms - whatever it is, many of us couldn't (and still can't) stop playing.

Runner-up: Dots

THE BEST IOS RACING GAME OF 2013

Real Racing 3

Runner-up: Plants vs. Zombies 2

THE BEST-DESIGNED IOS APP OF 2013

Runner-up: Fantastical

ACCESSORIES

THE BEST IOS DEVICE CASE OF 2013

Apple iPad Air Smart Cover

Rather than bulking the iPad up with a heavy case, sometimes it's better to go with lightweight screen protection. Enter Apple's Smart Cover, which smartly clips to the iPad Air with a magnetic spine; microfiber lining keeps the screen clean when the cover is on.

Runner-up: Apple iPhone 5/5s Leather Case

THE BEST IOS CHARGER OR DOCK OF 2013

Apple iPhone 5/5s Dock

When the iPhone 5 debuted in 2012 a dock was a sorely missing accessory, but it's back for 2013 - and it fits the older phone too. So once again you can stand up your iPhone on your desk as it's charging without resorting a third-party device.

Runner-up: Twelve South HiRise Dock

THE BEST IOS EXTERNAL KEYBOARD OF 2013

Apple Wireless Keyboard

Keyboard cases and third-party keyboards for iPad come and go, but few have the enduring reliability and precise keyfeel of Apple's venerable Wireless Keyboard, the same keyboard included with the iMac.

Runner-up: Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover for iPad

THE BEST MOBILE SPEAKER OF 2013

Bose SoundLink II

Bluetooth speakers can sound tinny or distort when they're played loud, but Bose's SoundLink II provides impressive performance and improved internal engineering, despite its identical casing to the previous model. It can pair with up to six Bluetooth devices at a time, too.

Runner-up: Jawbone Big Jambox

THE BEST IOS MOBILE STYLUS OF 2013

53 Pencil

FiftyThree Inc.'s Paper is one of the better natural media-style art apps for the iPad, so it's only fitting that the company should introduce a special stylus, Pencil. With an integrated "eraser," palm rejection (to make sure your hand doesn't mess up your image) and blending, it's possible to produce some absolutely gorgeous imagery.

Runner-up: Wacom Bamboo Solo
