Can I use Sonos with my iPad?

The Sonos Controller for iPad is hands-down the easiest way to control music and manage devices in your Sonos network. After you've installed the app on your iPad you'll be able to use your sound system to its fullest:

  • Play music from your computer through your Sonos sound system.
  • Add and play music from supported streaming services on your Sonos sound system.
  • Control playback, skip tracks, and create playlists.
  • Create and manage groups, which determine what music plays in which rooms of your home.
  • Adjust EQ settings of audio playback.
  • Switch to a device plugged into the line input on the back of support Sonos devices (note, you can only play and stop, and control the volume of these devices, not skip between tracks).
  • Set alarms.
  • Adjust sleep settings (auto-turn off music after a certain length).
  • Manage account and Sonos preferences.

How to use Sonos for iPhone and iPad, the ultimate guide

If you decide to bypass the Sonos Controller app, you can still play music from your device, but the experience isn't as smooth. You'll need to connect an AirPort Express to one of your Sonos devices and then you can use your iPad's AirPlay function to stream your music. It's a little more work to set this up, but it's a decent workaround if you want to play music from an app that is not on the compatibility list of streaming services that work with Sonos Controller.

Keep in mind, if you bypass the Sonos Controller app, you'll lose a lot of of the ability to control and manage the other speakers in your wireless system.

Can I use Sonos with other tablets?

As far as the mobile app goes, Sonos has only released ones that work with Apple and Android devices. This limits your options if you own a tablet running on a less popular operating system, but it's not impossible!

On the back of the Sonos Play:5, you'll find a 3.5mm audio input (not to be confused with the headphone output). By purchasing an inexpensive audio patch cable, you will be able to connect your tablet directly to the speaker.

The audio will stream to any other grouped Sonos devices. If you connect a device via line-in, you'll be able to control volume settings and play/stop music from the Sonos controller app on your smartphone or computer, but you'll have to use the hardwired device to skip tracks or choose a specific song/playlist.

Play on!

Enjoy music from your tablet in any room of your house by connecting your tablet to your Sonos devices. As you change from room to room, you can adjust which speakers are active from the Sonos Controller app. If you want, you can even play exercise jams in your basement while piping a soothing lullaby through the Sonos in your bedroom.

The easiest way to manage music and devices on your Sonosnet is by using the Sonos Controller app for your tablet.
