What you need to know

  • Ted Lasso has passed Glee for the most Emmy nominations for a new comedy series.
  • The series received a total of 20 Emmy nominations for its first season.

Earlier today, Apple announced that its beloved comedy series Ted Lasso had been nominated for two more Emmy awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

That brought the total number of nominations to 20 and, according to CNN, broke an Emmy Awards record. According to the report, the Apple TV+ series has surpassed Glee as having the most nominations for a freshman comedy series. Brendan Hunt, who plays Coach Beard in the series, says that he was surprised to find out he was also nominated for an Emmy.

"Getting nominated for an acting Emmy is as thrilling as it is surprising," said Hunt, who also shares two writing nominations with fellow writers Sudeikis, Joe Kelly and Bill Lawrence. "Not only was this kind of thing never something I was planning or pining for, but also I'm not even the "best supporting actor" on my own show. I am appreciative of, and humbled by, this recognition; but far more appreciative that so many of my castmates have received the same. We're a team, but maybe we're a team with a deep bench."

All of these nominations come right before the comedy series premieres its second season. If you haven't seen the trailer for the second season of Ted Lasso yet, check it out below:

The second season of Ted Lasso will premiere on Apple TV+ on Friday, July 23. If you want to enjoy the new season in the best quality possible, check out our list of the Best TVs for Apple TV 2021.
