Ah! the 1980’s. A time when hair was big and so were the arcades. Sure, it's 2012 now, and we have more computing power in our iPads than we used to have in our houses, but there's still many a retro gamer just itching to play the classic arcade games on a classic arcade gear. Both the Atari Arcade Duo-powered joystick for iPad and ION Audio's iCade for iPad promise just that -- to give you a flashback of the '80s on the iPad of the '10s. But which is better, and which gives the best real arcade experience?
Atari's 40th anniversary is this week, and to celebrate they're offering their catalog of classic games on iOS for free. Normally the 100-strong collection goes for $9.99, and even then, most of the titles still required in-app purchases.
Hidden within the recent update to Atari’s Greatest Hits app is a rather tasty snippet of information. It points to an Atari branded joystick add-on for the iPad. The joystick and base is set to be called the Arcade-Duo and has a retro arcade type red balled joystick and four buttons.
Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game.
To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break!
Atari has released a compilation of its famous arcade games for iPhone and iPad. There are over a hundred games in the collection, 18 classic arcade games like Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command and Pong to name a few. The other games, 82 in total are made up of classics from the first Atari home console know as the Atari 2600. Some of the games have had a modern day update with Bluetooth multi-player support. Those of you old enough to remember these classics should be very excited and rightly so; this compilation of games is awesome!
Atari's legal team is getting quite a workout lately, just yesterday they demanded that 4 more App Store games be removed with more likely to come. It was not long ago that TiPb reported that two other notables were forcefully removed, Tris and PhoneSaber.
