How to setup Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Contacts on your iPhone or iPad

Earlier this year, Google decided to ditch their Exchange ActiveSync-licensed GoogleSync service for free Gmail accounts. Paid Google Accounts still enjoy full support, and existing setups were grandfathered in, but any new, free account setups, like those necessitated by a new iPhone 5s or iPhone 5c means - poof - no more Gmail over Exchange. So, what's left for you to do? If you don't want to pony up for a paid account, or forward to a push service like iCloud or Outlook.com, you can use Google's eccentric IMAP service, which works with Apple's Mail app and allows for a unifed inbox with other, non-Gmail accounts, and the Gmail app, which is excellent but is a silo unto itself, and a few other options. Gmail over ActiveSync experiencing failure to push, are you having problems?

Gmail over ActiveSync hasn't been working properly for me for the last few days. I get no mail for hours at a time, then a ton of mail spurts in, then no mail again. IMAP is fine, it's only ActiveSync that's causing me problems. Google, of course, is end-of-lifing the free version of GoogleSync -- their licensed version of Microsoft's Exchange ActiveSync for push mail, contacts, and calendars -- but existing setups are supposed to keep working, as are paid Google accounts. That's what I have, a paid Google Account, which means I should be getting ActiveSync service as usual going forward. So what's the deal?

Google dropping ActiveSync support for Gmail, forcing new connection to go through their shoddy IMAP service

As part of their "Winter Cleanup", Google announced today that they'll be deprecating support for Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Contacts over Exchange ActiveSync, or GoogleSync as they call it.
