Best overall: Apple Watch Series 6
The Apple Watch Series 6 carries over the design from the now-discontinued Apple Watch Series 4 and 5. It includes a larger display, thinner bezels, and more rounded corners than previous versions. New this year is a blood oxygen sensor and faster charging. It also includes last year's headline features, an always-on display, now brighter, and built-in compass. With an S6 64-bit dual-core processor, the Apple Watch Series 6 is 20 percent faster than the previous model's performance, the Apple Watch Series 5. The Series 6 is available in aluminum, stainless steel, or titanium finishes.
This Apple Watch version also features an electrocardiogram (ECG) system that's capable of detecting whether you're experiencing cardiac abnormalities such as atrial fibrillation. There's also a built-in fall detection tool that automatically contacts emergency services if you fall. The Apple Watch Series 6 also includes a louder speaker, which is ideal when receiving calls, ceramic and sapphire crystal back, and increased storage capacity. The last of these is great for loading up your wearable device with podcasts and audiobooks.
If there's one downside to buying the Apple Watch Series 6, it's the price. The newer version is at least $120 more than the Apple Watch SE, depending on the model.
- Large display in aluminum, stainless steel, or titanium finishes
- 20 percent faster than Apple Watch 5
- Includes blood oxygen sensor, ECG, and always-on display
Best alternative: Apple Watch Series 6 Nike
The Apple Watch Series 6 Nike is precisely the same as the regular Series 6 model in terms of features. However, in this case, you'll receive an already installed Nike Run Club app with audio-guided runs, and exclusive Nike+ Analog and Digital watch faces.
Hardware-wise, the Nike version is only available with an aluminum case, and there's no gold finish option. The Nike-branded Apple Watch bands, Sport Loop, and Sport Band varieties are available to everyone, not just to those with a Nike watch.
The Apple Watch Series 6 Nike is available in 44mm and 40mm with GPS only and GPS + Cellular.
- Same price, more faces
- Works with the same bands
- Only available with aluminum case
- No gold finish available
Best value: Apple Watch Series SE
The Apple Watch SE includes many of the features of the Series 6, but for less money. These features include an onboard optical heart sensor, water resistance up to 50m, fall detection, a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery that lasts up to 18 hours between charges, and a barometric altimeter. It is available in 40mm and 44mm sizes and features the same dual-core S5 chip found in the Apple Watch Series 5. You can also purchase the GPS-only version or the GPS + Cellular version, depending on your needs.
Unfortunately, the SE version doesn't include the ECG system, blood oxygen monitor, or always-on display. It's only available in an aluminum finish and in space gray, silver, or gold finishes. Despite this, the Apple Watch SE is worthy of serious consideration.
- Price is right.
- Many features of more expensive watches
- Great for swimming
- Limited finish and color selection
- No ECG, blood oxygen monitor, or always-on display
Best for fashion: Apple Watch Hermès
If you're looking to spend the most bling possible on an Apple Watch Series 6, the Apple Watch Hermès is here. These watches start at $1,249 and go up to $1,499. Each features a silver or space black stainless case and GPS + Cellular. The main differences are the display size (44mm or 40mm) and the leather band you select.
Besides offering high-end leather bands, each Apple Watch Hermès includes an exclusive Hermès orange or black Sport Band, depending on the finish you choose. There are also distinctive Hermès watch faces. Beyond this, the features are identical to what you will find on other Apple Watch Series 6 models.
- Unique watch faces
- Premium leather bands
- All ship with exclusive Hermès Sport Band
- Very expensive
- Limited selection
If you're a guy looking for a new Apple Watch, you'll quickly notice there's a wide selection of versions available. Our favorite model, the Apple Watch Series 6, offers the latest bells and whistles, including an always-on display, ECG, and blood oxygen sensor.
Available in multiple styles and price points, the Apple Watch Series 6 features the largest displays to date on the wearable device and the best internals. Find the one that's perfect for you, and have fun buying new bands to complement your purchase.
