Introducing Facebook Messenger for iPhone

Facebook has introduced a second app for iPhone, a dedicated Facebook Messenger client to help you get your IM on. Sadly, it's not a universal binary so you're limited to chunky double fuzzy on iPad (same as the regular Facebook app... until they finally launch Facebook for iPad). For hardcore Facebook Message users on the go, this will no doubt be appreciated.

Details and screenshots after the break.

Facebook Messenger is a faster way to message. Reach friends right on their phones, get and send messages fast, message everyone at once and more.

Top Features:

  • Message friends, groups of friends or anyone in your mobile contacts
  • Map your location, find your friends and make plans on the go
  • Get mobile notifications so you never miss a message
  • Include photos so friends can see what you're doing

Apple the most valuable company in the world... briefly.
  1. CD says:

push alerts don't work. Wouldn't expect anything more from FB - it's as bad as FB chat.

  2. LMBO. Rene you never cease to amaze me but I'm learning what you're about slowly but surely. :)

"Sure it works fine on the iPod touch but incredibly Google’s “iPad support” comes not in the form of a universal binary with proper, native iPad UI, but simply the ability to now install the Google+ iPhone app on the iPad and run it either windowed or in fuzzy 2x mode. Such a disappointment!" http://www.tipb.com/2011/08/08/google-app-updated-includes-ipad-ipod-touch-support/

But for Facebook [this post]: "Sadly, it’s not a universal binary so you’re limited to chunky double fuzzy on iPad."

Nice. I see what you did there. :-D Simple and straight w/ Fb...drama w/ Google.

I promise I don't look for this stuff. It is just blatant when it happens. :)

i dont see it in the app store.....

  4. Not available outside the US ( here in El Salvador) as usual.

Hah, first they kill the browser chat (I don't use it until they fix it). And now they release a second app instead of just integrating the few new features like group chat into the existing app. And video chat isn't even in this new separate app yet. Come on Facebook, please put some capable people in charge some day.

It's not a chat app, particularly. It's Messages, which is chat, inbox, and direct wall posts rolled into one unified/threaded inbox. I'm sure greater functionality will be added later on, but wouldn't it make sense to get the product to market now to compete with GroupMe 3.0's release, and more specifically, gather an audience before iMessages is released.

I think they understand Chat being broken in the app, and I think they are getting closer and closer to being done with Chat in general.

  6. Volcomfever says:

You can't see who's online on facebook chat. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the app if you can't even see who is currently online? At least in terms of fb chat.

    • Jas says:

You don't need to see who is on chat! Even if they are not online they will get the message on their phone if they download the app.

      • Anonymous says:

Whats the point when there are tons of other messenger apps that do the same thing? You can't even chat with someone directly on Facebook.

  7. Ern says:

You must be on crack. I just tried to install it and its a no show in the app store!

  8. MPIIIMan says:

BeeJive and Trillian already connect to Facebook, keep you connected, and provide notifications. No need for this one.

  9. Anonymous says:

Ok am i the only one missing something here? Whats the point of the app, if you can't even message someone directly to Facebook.

Why do people say "the IM on fb doesn't work now this"

The IM on fb works fine. As far as this I dunno haven't tested yet, only installed.

Not available outside of the US (why does it not surprise me...)

  12. Ckalli says:

I can't seem to download the app in India. Us only app?

  13. Pyro2000x says:

    Not in the uk store

  14. Noel Hibbard says:

What about FB IM is broken? I use it all day without a problem. What am I missing? I installed this new App and so far I like it. It looks like notifications only come to the iPhone if you don't have FB up in your web browser. And the person typing a msg to you sees a msg saying something like, "This message will be delivered to Noel's iPhone". The startup time is very good too. Much faster then all the other IM clients. I have tried them all.

  15. Liam330 says:

This is not in the uk App Store :(

  16. Whiny Pants says:

I'm a fan of keeping it simple. If the original facebook app is lacking in it's features, why not make it better. We don't need another app to download to our iphones, which will now send us two notifications or none at all. I understand facebook is feeling the pinch (thanks to google +), but I don't think creating a whole new app will solve their problems.

  17. Jilltwieder says:

I can't figure out a way to delete the messages!

  18. Tashi says:
