Get your PDF documents in iBooks on any device thanks to iCloud support.
With the iOS 9.3 update, Apple added the ability for iBooks to store your PDFs in iCloud. That means, any compatible document that you've added to iBooks on one device can be downloaded onto another devices. Plus, with iCloud Drive syncing iBooks on your Mac, you can make sure all of your compatible downloads are easily accessible on your iPhone and iPad.
Before you are able to add PDFs to iCloud, you'll need to set up iCloud Drive on your iPhone and iPad.
To sync PDFs in iBooks in iCloud from your Mac, you will need to download and install OS X El Capitan 10.11.4.
How to upload current PDFs in iBooks to iCloud
This is probably the easiest part. All you have to do is open the iBooks app after you've installed iOS 9.3 on your iPhone or iPad and OS X 10.11.4 on your Mac. You'll be asked if you want to us iCloud. Tap or click on Use iCloud and your PDFs will automatically begin uploading to the cloud.
How to filter your bookshelf to only show PDFs
Depending on how many books you have collected in iBooks, searching for the one you want may be difficult. You can filter your bookshelf to only show PDFs.
- Open iBooks.
- Tap All Books in the top center of the screen.
- Select PDF.
Select Done in the upper right corner of the screen.
This will hide all documents that aren't PDFs.
How to download PDFs from iCloud
Once your files are uploaded into iCloud for iBooks, you'll be able to download them onto any of your devices.
- Open iBooks.
- Find the selection you wish to download.
Tap the Download icon in the upper right corner of the PDF. It looks like a cloud with an arrow pointing downward.
On the Mac, PDF documents automatically download into your iBooks library.
How to remove PDFs from iBooks on your iPhone or iPad
Done reading a PDF and want to free up a little space on your iPhone? No problem. You can delete it from iBooks on your device. It will still be available to re-download unless you choose to delete it everywhere.
- On your iPhone or iPad, open iBooks.
Tap Select in the upper right corner of the screen.
- Tap the PDFs you wish to remove from your device.
- Tap Delete on the upper left side of the screen.
Tap Remove Download to remove it from your device.
Tap Delete Everywhere to remove the file from iCloud entirely.
If you delete a PDF on iBooks for Mac, it will delete it on all of your devices and remove it from iCloud entirely.
