iOS 7.1: What did it fix for you and what's still broken?

iOS 7.1 is live for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and with it a whole bevy of fixes and additions. Since Apple makes updates so easy, and adoption rates are so high, that means many of you have likely taken the plunge already. It also means you've likely scoured through every change to find what'...
How do you use your iPad?

How do you use your iPad?

Apple juggled their iPad lineup yesterday, kicking the iPad 2 to the curb and bringing the iPad 4 back out of retirement. For anyone who wants a slightly less expensive full-sized iPad, that's a big improvement. For anyone trying to decide which iPad they want, it's even more confusing. We have...

Fantastical 2 for iPad review

Thanks to Fantastical 2 for iPad I can now rapidly enter and find appointments and events on all my Apple devices, all the time. Flexibits' hyper-efficient, natural-language parsing calendar app first shipped for the Mac in May of 2011. Fantastical for iPhone landed in November of 2012. Now it's...
Is iOS 7.1 worth giving up your jailbreak for?

Is iOS 7.1 worth giving up your jailbreak for?

iOS 7.1 brings a few new features, some great accessibility updates, and some much needed bug fixes to the iPhone and iPad. If you want it, however, you're going to have to give up your jailbreak to get it. That's because, unlike iOS 7.0.x, iOS 7.1 has been jailbroken yet and, as is increasingly...
How do you protect your iPhones and iPads?

How do you protect your iPhones and iPads?

Almost everyone has been in this situation at one point or another. You pick up a new iPhone 5s or iPad Air, maybe a iPhone 5c or Retina iPad mini, you use it for a while, and then it starts to show signs of wear and tear. Maybe you banged it against the wall and got a little ding on it, maybe it...
Why a 5-inch iPhone 6 is far more important than a 13-inch iPad Pro

Why a 5-inch iPhone 6 is far more important than a 13-inch iPad Pro

iPhone 6. 2014 has only just begun and it seems like 5-inch iPhone and 13-inch iPad Pro rumors are already getting a lot of attention and generating a lot of discussion. That both sets of rumors tend to focus around larger screen sizes is interesting, but what's really interesting is why a bigger...

The iPad 2 is dead...long live the iPad 4!

Following recent speculation, Apple has this morning finally laid the iPad 2 to rest. Replacing it, is the iPad 4. That's right, Apple's "iPad with Retina Display" is back on sale starting at $399 in black and white for the Wifi only version, and from $529 in the same colors for the cellular...
Would you want the Phone app on your iPad?

Would you want the Phone app on your iPad?

Should the iPad have the Phone app? With all the talk of a large screen iPhone 6 this year, and potentially more in the years to follow, it's got me wondering — how big is too big? One of the arguments for a big screen iPhone is that it would better serve people who need a phone but want only...
iPad 4 might replace iPad 2 tomorrow as well, Lightning to reign supreme!

iPad 4 might replace iPad 2 tomorrow as well, Lightning to reign supreme!

The iPad 4 could be set to replace the ancient iPad 2 as Apple's lower-end, full-sized tablet as early as tomorrow. Combined with rumors of an 8GB iPhone 5c, if everything plays out, we could see an end to the venerable 30-pin Dock connector, and the new Lightning plug run the Apple line. Mark...
WWDC 2014 wallpapers for iPhone and iPad

WWDC 2014 wallpapers for iPhone and iPad

You know the drill. Apple has announced WWDC 2014 and that means there's new artwork to go along with it. This year it's a classic rainbow of app icon shapes whose negative space reveals the distinctive top of the Apple logo. We'll leave it to others to engage in the usual Apple-mancy, to read...

Yup, iPad Air still gets insanely good 24-hours of battery life as Wi-Fi hotspot

One of the most remarkable things about the iPad is that its 10 hours of battery life as a tablet translates into 24 hours of battery life a Wi-Fi hotspot. With the screen on doing things, it lasts almost half a day. With the screen off simply feeding data to a tethered computer, it lasts a day with room to spare. Not surprisingly, the iPad Air, which despite being considerably thinner and lighter, enjoys the same 10 hours of tablet battery life, also enjoys the same 24 hours of tethered Wi-Fi hotspot battery life. And lest there be any doubt, Anand Lal Shimpi, has proved it. AnandTech:

iPad Air Smart Case vs. Smart Cover: Which should you get?

Along with the brand new iPad Air, Apple has also released two different accessories designed to protect and preserve it - Smart Covers and Smart Cases. Smart Covers attach via magnets and protect only the screen. Smart Cases wrap around and protect both the back and the screen. The cover leaves more exposed, but is lighter and sleeker. The cover keeps more safe, but at the expense of added bulk. So, if you've got an iPad Air, and you're interested in one of Apple's accessories, which one should you get - Smart Cover or Smart Case?

Which iPad Air did you get?

iPad Air day is drawing towards its conclusion, and hopefully by now everyone who was planning to pick one up on launch day – wherever you might be in the world – has had chance to. But now, we want to hear from you and find out which model you picked up in the end? We've been talking about how to decide which is the best model for you since the iPad Air first launched, but for many today was the time to put the talking to an end.

The iPad Air launch for pretty much everyone has been much smoother and less stressful than last months iPhone 5s launch. Stock seems to have been plentiful pretty much everywhere, and with in-store pickups and availability stretching to a number of third-party retailers as well, perhaps more of you actually found yourselves grabbing one today instead of waiting a while? Planned, off the cuff, whichever it may have been, which iPad Air did you get today?

The iPad Air and the iPad 4: Side-by-side

The iPad Air is slimmed down quite a bit from it's predecessor, the iPad 4, but just how much? We've snapped a few quick images of the two side-by-side, and as you'll see there is a noticeable difference. Apple has shaved a hefty chunk of bezel off for the iPad Air, and likewise it's gone on a diet in terms of thickness and overall weight. Holding one in each hand with your eyes closed, it's real easy to tell the difference.

iFixit takes apart the iPad Air, doesn't score well for repairability

As is customary with any new Apple release, the guys over at iFixit have got their hands on an iPad Air and proceeded to do what they do best; take it apart. It's as cool as ever to see what's inside, but the downer is that the Air scores pretty low on the repairability front.

Apple A7: Way more power than a phone needs to have

When Brian Klug joined me on the Vector podcast last week, I asked him if including the Apple A7 chipset in both the iPhone 5s and the iPad Air and Retina iPad mini meant the phone was way overpowered, or the tablets were way underpowered. He answered in the best way possible - that the phone was ridiculously overpowered. As part of his iPad Air review, Brian's colleague, Anand Lai Shimpi, puts some context to that ridiculousness. From AnandTech:
