Everything you need to know about Apple's next generation iPhone 5S

iPhone 5S | iPhone 5 | iPhone 4S | iPhone 4 | iPhone 3GS | iPhone 3G | iPhone

The iPhone 5S is the presumed name for Apple's 2013, next generation phone. For the last few years, every odd year, Apple has released an S-version of the previous year's iPhone. In 2009 they added S-for-speed with the iPhone 3GS. In 2011 they added S-for-Siri with the iPhone 4S. Unless Apple breaks pattern, this year we have a better camera, more advanced processor, and... who knows what else to look forward to!

iPhone 5S component leaks show updated vibrator assembly and more

Some parts have been posted online that purport to belong to the iPhone 5S, or whatever Apple calls their next generation phone. While the iPhone 5 might continue the tradition of keeping the previous year's form factor, that doesn't mean the internals can't change. If these parts are genuine, they show updates to the vibrator assembly, earpiece and speaker brackets, and more. Here's the image from BGR:

Wonderful Saigon Electrics of Binh Duong hopefully not providing 12mp cameras for iPhone 5S

Apple is rumored to be sourcing 12mp camera parts from Wonderful Saigon Electrics of Binh Duong -- love that name -- for use with the next generation iPhone 5S. That's according to Tinte.vn (translated by Google):

Foxconn reportedly ramping up for iPhone 5S production

iMore previously learned that Apple was targeting an August time frame for the next-generation iPhone 5S, and while that may or may not include more recently rumored software scheduling issues, it does sound like the general time frame is still accurate enough for Foxconn to start ramping up for production. Lorraine Luk of the Wall Street Journal writes:

Former Apple ad man thinks the iPhone's naming convention needs to change

Since 2008 Apple has introduced a new iPhone design one year and then followed it up with an S-variant the next. iPhone 3G was followed by iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 was followed by iPhone 4S. It's gotten to the point where many people are already assuming the next iPhone will be the iPhone 5S. Almost a month ago Rene wrote an article examining whether this iPhone 5S assumption could become a problem for Apple, and pointed out some ways Apple might already be moving to solve that problem. Now Apple's former ad guru, Ken Segall -- who was responsible for naming the iMac -- has shared some of his own thoughts on the matter:

I've been in New York City all week at the temporary Mobile Nations HQ working on some amazing stuff. We're not finished yet, which means I can't announce it yet, but I also can't wait to tell you all about it. More on iOS 7, iPhone 5S, and Apple's plans for 2013

MG Siegler instigated an interesting conversation on Branch today when he wondered out loud about Apple's plans for 2013. I've already posted several pieces on iMore about the potential for an April event, a potential summer release for the iPhone 5S, some stuff on the iWatch, bigger iPhone, and less expensive iPhone, and a bit about Jony Ive going hands-on with iOS 7. John Gruber added the following, which he's since posted on Daring Fireball as well:

Production on iPhone 5S rumored to be starting this quarter for summer release, less expensive iPhone along for the ride

Apple may be preparing to begin production on the iPhone 5S at some point in this quarter, with plans to release it at some point this summer. This lines up with what iMore heard, which pointed to an August launch date for the phone. Apple is also working on the rumored low-cost iPhone, which could also be launched later this year according to the Wall Street Journal:

Development of the next two iPhones began under Steve Jobs, of course

One does not simply pull an iPhone whole from the void and birth it in a single day. As anyone involved in the design, development, and manufacturing of iPhone-class products will tell you, it takes a long, long time and roadmaps typically stretch out over years. So, it comes as little surprise that the next two generations of iPhone, likely including an S-type update to the current iPhone 5, began under the direction of Steve Jobs. Still, given Jobs legacy, hearing it reaffirmed again seems to make many people happy. Which brings us to Mike Aldrax's report in the San Francisco Examiner:
