The realities of running Cydia, the jailbreak app store

How profitable is Cydia, the jailbreak app store, and what happened to the Mac version of Cydia? Jay Freeman (Saurik), the founder of Cydia, recently provided some answers. The explanations were prompted by disgruntled users venting over Cydia's lack of updates and the whereabouts of a Mac version, and ended up as a mini-interview of sorts. In response to claims that Saurik keeps 30% of every app sold in Cydia, like Apple does with the App Store, Saurik provided details on where a large portion of that 30% actually goes.

Progress made on iPhone 4S, iPad 2 jailbreak

An untethered jailbreak for Apple A5 chipset powered iOS devices (namely iPhone 4S and iPad 2) has finally been achieved according to pod2g's most recent blog entry. He updated his blog yesterday stating he had hit a stumbling block but would update us today again. He's kept true to his word and let us know today that he's overcome the cache issue and achieved an untether.

OK, figured it out, the A5 cache is not a problem anymore. I sorted it out by doing the untether in a single thread and by flushing all the dcache then all the icache in a row at a strategical point of the process.

iPhone 4S untethered jailbreak update

pod2g has updated his blog with the current status of his iPhone 4S jailbreak he's been working on. The good news is he seems to be working extremely hard on this one. The bad news is he seems to have hit a bit of a snag when it comes to the untethered part.

The untether fails right now because I'm having processor cache issues.

I'm close, but I can't figure out what happens. It certainly has something to do with the Cortex-A9 cache management.

I could sort it out quick, it's a matter of chance.

I'll report you my progress tomorrow.

Want an untethered jailbreak? Help the jailbreak community find one with new Chronic Dev crash reporter tool

Waiting for an untethered jailbreak on iOS 5? The Chronic Dev Team has just released a crash reporter tool that will allow your to submit your crash reports to them instead of Apple. Crash reports are most likely the way Apple finds exploits in iOS and patches them.

The Chronic Dev Team is hoping to find exploits in the same way for a different reason - a jailbreak for all. You simply install the program to your computer, attach your device to the computer, and click a single button to send your exploits to the Chronic Dev Team. The program is currently available only for Mac users but a Windows version should follow over the next 24 hours.
