Outlook iPhone and iPad users can now open Office attachments in Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Outlook users on the iPhone and iPad that also use Microsoft's iOS Office apps (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) will have some tighter integration features from now on. Microsoft has announced that Outlook users can now open Office documents sent as attachments directly in their respective iOS apps, rather than just view them in special readers.

Microsoft stated:

Editing Office documents sent as attachments is now quick and simple. Tapping on an attachment in Outlook will open the file directly in Word, Excel or PowerPoint, ready for editing in the richest and most powerful authoring apps for iOS. If you haven't yet downloaded the Office apps, Outlook will load a built-in viewer and provide a link to download the app in the App Store.

In addition, once changes are made to an Office document after opening them first in Outlook, the user can then tap the Back button to return to Outlook. The newly-edited Office document is then automatically added the Outlook email as a replay attachment. Finally, the Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps now include a "Send with Outlook" option in the "Share" menu.

I have been writing professionally about technology and gaming news for 14 years.

  • I love what Microsoft is doing under their new CEO and all of this multi-platform support.
  • I wish they'd focus on stuff like SharePoint calendar integration and Exchange shared mailbox support, but oh well.
  • Amen! Sent from the iMore App
  • This feature has been there for weeks now.
