Upgrading to iPhone 3G S? What Are You Doing With Your Old iPhone?
IKEA and Spike Jonze remind us above that you can't really hurt your old iPhone's feelings by upgrading to the latest, greatest iPhone 3G S, but that doesn't mean you have to dump the poor obsoleted fella either.
So what are your plans for your last-year's iPhone 3G or original iPhone 2G? Selling them on eBay? Unlocking them to use as travel devices? Keeping them as backup? Turning them into a dedicated couch-bound iTunes/Apple TV remote? Gifting them to a needy family member or friend? Saving them up to build the world's tallest iPhone tower? Sending them to Cellphones for Soldiers? What?

I would have to sell it on ebay to pay back my visa for a 3gs
I'd be willing to by a black iPhone 3G off someone... Email me and we'll talk c_scheuer@shaw.ca
One iPhone per Child? …
Turning mine into a dedicated remote control with the Air Mouse app. Using the mini dvi hooked to the flat screen, I have hours of hulu and 42" screen twittering. Yeah yeah yeah!
giving it to my wife
eating it. Man where is the iPhone version of this site ??????????!?!!?!???????!!!
I ain't buying one WAITING TILL I WIN ONE!!!
Tony(nyc)
My 1st gen (0G? 1G? 2.5G
) going to be my wife's "iPod Touch" since we can't afford the data plan for two iPhones. I do have a question that I suppose will be answered by an apple sales rep tomorrow... I've heard of old iPhones being used as an iPod Touch only, but since the iPhone requires activation when you set it up I'm wondering how it works. I was thinking the best thing to do would be for my wife to just erase and restore it, and start syncing it with her iTunes, but now I'm wondering how that will work since when you connect it to iTunes will need to activate with AT&T...
Hmmm, anybody have the answer?
@Watchful
I would say activate it with your current sim card n it before moving it to the 3G(S). Just a thought. First thing that popped in my head.
new iphone 3G S finally getting shipped !! chk out what i found http://mynewiphone3g-s.blogspot.com
Unlocked and jail-broke my 2G and then sold it on craigslist.
@ Watchful.
Why have it serve the purpose of iPod Touch when you can have a phone? Activate it with a SIM card which has a dataplan and everything, afterwards pop in your wife's SIM card. Worst comes to worst, jailbreak it and then activate it, its a 2G anyway...
Good luck.
I'm selling it on ebay. I have a 2g iPhone 8gb, and they're still selling for almost 300 on ebay, so that'll cover the cost of my white 32gb 3G S almost completely!
Exactly the same as Watchful - giving it to my wife as a touch.
@Zoomiez - in my case, my wife is on Verizon (no sim card), but even beyond that, she talks on her phone A LOT and, IMO, the iPhone is one of the worst PHONES I've ever had. I hate it. The speaker is terrible. She's much better sticking with her LG for that. For me, I use my phone rarely as a phone, primarily for the web.
@ Emmanuel Lemire:
How much did you sell it for?
I'm keeping my 3G for the jailbreak and unlock because god knows how long it will take for the 3GS to be jailbroken. But I still have a Black 32GB 3GS that will be delivered to my door by 3pm tomorrow (at least thats what fedex says), so now I have quite the dilemma.
Mine's on eBay as we speak, if anyone's interested. http://bit.ly/GQVi0
I'm giving to my wife as her "new" phone.
mine is aswell... starting bid at 200 if anyones interested... http://cgi.ebay.com/IPHONE-3G-8-GIG-UNLOCKED-GOOD-CONDITONW0QQcmdZViewItemQQtrkparmsZ65Q3a12Q7c66Q3a2Q7c39Q3a1Q7c72Q3a1205Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem4146a5f86dQQitemZ280358156397QQptZCellQ5fPhonesQQsalenotsupported
sorry... here it is http://shop.ebay.com/iphone%203g%20good%20conditon?from=R40&trksid=p2773
Good question... Where is the iPhone version of this site
@Watchful- just leave the old SIM card in. Every time you need to restore, upgrade the OS, or whatever, it will "activate" with your old SIM (showing your old phone # in iTunes), but then on the device itself say "Waiting for activation, this may take some time" via a pop up message. Just dismiss it and start using. Your device will say "No Service" for the Carrier- I just put it in Airplane Mode then activate WiFi. At least that's how my 2G has worked since I got the 3G last September.
IF I get a new 3G-S, my 1st gen. will probably become an iPod Touch for my son. He likes to play the different games and such. He's 10, so doesn't really need the phone capabilities and I can't afford a third data plan!
I'm giving my 3G to my wife to replace her 2G. I think I'm going to unlock the 3G with ultrasn0w tomorrow and just pop in my wife's 2G SIM card and hope that AT&T doesn't notice (i.e. remain on the $20 iPhone plan and not get jacked up to the $30 and no text plan). And I guess my wife's 2G will become an improved iPod touch with speaker and camera. We already have 1 deactivated 2G already though (mine), so not sure we need 2 of those. Might have to eBay one or gift it to family.
There are going to be about 200,000 3G's on eBay tomorrow. You'll be lucky to sell it for $50 if you list it now. I'm kicking myself for not selling mine with the beta 5 version of 3.0 two weeks ago!

selling my 3g with 3.0 OS for 200$ on Gazelle.com......Any takers
I'm probably going to either microwave it or blend it!! Anyone into a live feed?
i sold my 8gb 3g for 265 last week. Will be selling my brothers 16 gb 3g for 370.
Sold it to my friend for 100 bucks, could've gotten more but I thought I'd be nice since it's sort of outdated at this piont.
@ Michal
Put it up on ebay, you will get much more than 200 for it. I just sold mine 3 days ago and got 275.
May I suggest something? Donate it to somebody with special needs. Assistive communication software on the iPhone is a new area that is getting a lot of traction because the software plus the iPod Touch/iPhone is much cheaper than a large AAC device (and it fits in one's pocket). If you feel generous, give a needy person the possibility of a voice by donating it to them. See http://proloquo2go.com/
So you don't get money back, but it's better than getting scammed on ebay and you get to make a difference.
Cheers!
I sold my white 3g here in Miami for 375$ on Craigslist!
Sold my 3G 8gb unlucked and jailbroken on C.L for $350.00

As a disability advocate, your comment put a nice smile on my face, David! As for me I'm giving my black 16GB 3G to my mom who is paying for half of my black 32GB 3G S.
I sold mine to my Russian coworkers so they can send it home to their relatives.
Beat's me. It's a first gen model but the back is all scratched up. I'll try and sell it I guess.
Make a colliction of the iPhones ...I love it so match
I sold mine yesterday on Craigslist for $350, which was a huge reason I am number 9 in line in Seattle right now.
Mine took a dive into the Tuscarawas River last Saturday. Good timing ehh?
My boyfriend is buying me the 32GB 3GS, and i'm giving him my 16GB 3G. Fair trade.
I'm selling mine on http://www.nextworth.com, for a decent amount too!
My three year old is getting it full time, I have tons of games for him that will stay there. I'm retiring the email and phone capabilities for now.
Took back an ipod touch to store. Handed down the 3G to the kiddo. It really is a better "ipod." Microphone for some games (balloon animals app). Has GPS & camera. 3.0 was free vs paying 10 for it on the touch.
Gave it to my teen, wanted to try the iPhone. HOOKED IN ONE DAY (after railing me about how much I prasied it..typical). Now he wants to upgrade, so I'll help him out (half on him) and sell the 2G on EBay. Sad to see it go though...the original one..hmmm, think I'll keep it since it's in pristine condition. Collectors item some day maybe?
I was going to give my 16GB 3G to my gf, but when she found out that the carrier she is currently contracted to is getting the 3G S she now wants the new one. She should be able to lean on them for an upgrade being well into the contract for a crappy Nokia dumbphone. So I'll just flog mine on eBay to get back some of the money I spent buying the 3G outright a year ago.
If I keep the old, deactivated iPhone as an iPod/iTouch, can I sync it one the same computer as my new iPhone 3GS? That is, will iTunes recognize that each has a different sync protocol?
Q. about jailbreaking: I'm going to Europe in October and would like to jailbreak my old 2G to use it there. But I don't really need to upgrade to 3GS until I come back. So can I still use my jaibroken phone with AT&T for the few days (or a day ...) before I leave? Then either sell in Europe or bring it back and sell it/give it away here. Or is it better to move my number to 3GS before i go? That way if I decide to sell it there, my number won't be functional. Does jailbreaking work on a deactivated phone (in other words: upgrade to 3GS first, jailbreak 2G later or jailbreak first and THEN upgrade)?
