Sharp set to supply LCD panels for the iPad 3
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Apple will add Sharp to its list of LCD panel manufacturers, specifically for the next generation iPad. The information comes from people familiar with the situation. Apple is apparently looking to diversify component suppliers for its products and as Sharp is already manufacturing LCD panels for the iPhone; it makes sense for Apple to add it to the supply chain for the iPad too.
Sharp’s Kameyama No.2 plant in Japan will be used to manufacture the panels. It is also believed that Apple is investing in Sharp’s Japanese manufacturing facilities to ensure preferential treatment when it comes to component availability and pricing.
The iPad 3 has long been rumored to have the much coveted “Retina” display. Apple would need to be able to source large quantities of high quality panels with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 for this to become a reality. This could be the deal that paves the way for it to happen early next year!

There isn't a LCD manufacture in the US. Besides if there were, the facility would likely unionized, which typically spawns lazy workers, over-paid salaries, and inferior products. Just look at GM. After that, the government will tax the hell out of it for whatever the reason...."oh but it's for the children". But we all know companies don't pay those taxes because they pass it on to the consumer in the form of higher prices. Now your precious iPad costs $3,000 and you're on TiB whining about the ridiculous price.

Wrong wrong wrong! There are many right to work starts in the U.S. Unions dont just spring up in every factory. American workers in those states have to choose to unionize or not. Unions don't cause laziness, poor incentives do that. Like the poor incentive you had to think about what you wrote before you wrote it. I am very much looking forward to another so-called "Retina" display. And how about a 17" MBP or a 27" iMac with that kind of resolution. The iPhone 4 has ruined me forever with its 326ppi display.
The problem with full fledged computers running that kind of resolution is the horsepower needed for decent frame rates. Don't get me wrong, I think it is coming, I just don't see it happening in iMacs or MacBooks next year. I truly hope I'm wrong on this one though

Seems like apple isn't making many of their own parts lately. Lcds are farmed out, processors, camera sensors etc. There is no wonder other phone manufacturers have similarly styled phones they are making all their parts lol.

This is what happens when you start suing one of your biggest component manufacturer.
Well they do design their own processors for iPhones, iPads, iPod Touches. They just don't manufacture them.
As for other components yes they are farmed out but they do make significant investments into these component manufacturers to ensure enough supply and first dibs at supply as well.
I sure hope the new display has the same fill rate as the old iPad 2 display. Otherwise, thousands of games will grind to a halt.

There may be more to this. Sharp may be the next supplier of panels for the iMac all in ones. The Japanese have been quiet for way too long. I'm glad to be seeing the names of Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, Mitsubishi gaining momentum again. The quality coming out of the Japanese companies was the ultimate for many years in picture quality and reliability. The displays on the Sony, Toshiba all in ones is pretty sweet. And the Aquos technology may have just landed Sharp the Apple account. Sharp may be the most experienced of all in LCD/LED technology and all the issues Apple has had with the all in ones made me back off. Great news for Apple across the board.
