Thinner MacBooks make bigger battery problems

When it comes to batteries, Apple could do a better job. Batteries wear out. They stop holding a charge. What's worse, sometimes they fail dramatically. They swell up, distort. That's what recently happened to my wife's four-year-old white MacBook. Now the MacBook is physically damaged because of it.

Older Mac webcams can spy on you, but don't tape yours over until you read this

Two researchers at Johns Hopkins University published a paper that has recently been widely reported throughout the Mac blogosphere. They claim to have been able to hack the webcam on older MacBook and iMac computers so the camera worked without activating the green LED. Don't tape over your webcam yet, though. I've had a look over the paper, and it's not as bad as you might think.

Will Apple ever bring back the black MacBook?

While I don't often like to admit it, there once was a time when I was a hardcore Windows user. My desktop ran Windows, my laptop ran Windows and I often scoffed at Apple's offerings. It wasn't until 2006 when the black polycarbonate MacBook appeared that I began to look at Apple machines differently. Oh how I longed to have a matte black MacBook.

By the time I got around to actually being able to afford such a machine, Apple ended up breaking my heart. The black MacBook was discontinued in 2008, but to this day I still hope they bring them back in some way. Judging from some of the responses in the iMore Forums, I'm not alone in my desires here.

Would you still buy a non-Retina MacBook? [Poll]

Would you still buy a non-Retina MacBook?

The Retina MacBook Pro has been with us for almost a full year now. The 15-inch version came to us by way of WWDC 2012, and frankly was unlike any laptop computer ever seen. The incredible 2880x1800 resolution Retina Display had to be seen to be believed, and just like that Apple had the best laptop display ever produced.

The Retina MacBook Pro now also comes in a 13-inch form factor too, and the display is equally stunning to look at. Combined with a slimmer profile compared to the non-Retina MacBook Pro's, it's a remarkable piece of hardware.

Apple working on a more social way to buy and share apps [Patent watch]

Based on a recent patent filing, it looks as if Apple may be looking at even more ways to buy and share apps. This approach would be a bit more social as it would allow your friends to share applications with you that they think you may enjoy. This could work through the network, through a cloud service, or through IR.
