It will soon be a lot easier to unlock a phone from America's top carriers — here's what you need to know

The top five carriers in the United States will on Feb. 11 implement new unlocking procedures for smartphones, tablets, and other cellular devices sold on their networks. The new unlocking standards were set forth by the CTIA in late 2013 and, though a voluntary commitment by the carriers, define the conditions under which carriers must unlock your devices — and it's all looking good for the consumer. Once you've paid off your phone, you'll probably be able to get it unlocked, and it'll be even easier with future smartphones.

U.S. Cellular to begin testing VoLTE this year in select markets

Voice over LTE (VoLTE) appears to be the hot new item that all the carriers are looking to implement, and it looks like U.S. Cellular will soon be testing the technology itself. CEO Ken Meyers recently confirmed that the carrier will begin testing VoLTE in a few markets starting this year.

iPhone 6 launches Sept. 19 on US Cellular and C Spire and on other regional carriers Sept. 26

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will go on sale September 19 on two smaller US wireless carriers, US Cellular and C Spire, but a number of other smaller regional US carriers will have to wait until September 26 to begin to sell the latest iPhone from Apple.

US Cellular to fire up LTE at more than 1200 sites in 2014

Fifth-place US carrier US Cellular (yes, there is a fifth place behind the all-swallowing big four) plans to dramatically expand their LTE footprint this year by the number of 1200 sites. They'll be switching on new 4G services in 13 states, and by the end of the year plan to cover 93% of their customers. U.S. Cellular will begin selling Apple products later this year

U.S. Cellular, the fifth-largest carrier in the United States, will start selling Apple products later this year. Announcing their Q1 financial results, the carrier said that they hope that adding Apple products to their lineup will help convice people to switch.

Sprint buying $480 million worth of midwestern U.S. Cellular spectrum and customers

Sprint, the perennial #3 carrier in the U.S., has announced their intent to acquire spectrum and customers from regional carrier U.S. Cellular for $480 Million. The deal covers the midwest, and seems focused on Chicago and St. Louis.
