AccuWeather update brings a new look, customizable forecasts

AccuWeather for iPhone has received a major update to version 6.0, bringing with it several improvements, including new, user-defined forecasts, as well as a new interface. The new look takes cues from AccuWeather for iPad and presents the user with a cleaner, more efficient interface than previous versions.

Comparing iPad weather apps at a glance

Earlier in the week I compared the current weather screens of 27 popular iPhone weather apps, and in the spirit of equal time for expansive interfaces, here's the same thing for 18 popular iPad weather apps. The reason for the lower number is that not all of the iPhone apps had iPad versions -- Apple's own iOS weather app included! While some of the iPad versions are just bigger, others take advantage of the larger screen and broader aspect ratio to show not just bigger but more.

After the Twitter for iPhone app comparison last week, my friend and Iterate podcast co-host Seth Clifford remarked that weather apps were the new hotness when it came to interface playgrounds for iOS designers. Savvy Apps, the geniuses behind Agenda Calendar and Buzz Contacts, have released a new type of app for them -- a weather app called Today Weather. Although weather apps aren't a genre that Savvy Apps is known for, they've done a great job with Today. It's simplistic, informative, and unique.

When Steve Jobs introduced the very first iPad, one of his big statements was that the 75 million iPhone users in the world already knew how to use it. Well, many of those users were suprised to discover that five of the built-in apps that they had grown to love on their iPhone were missing on their iPad. Namely, Clock, Voice Memos, Weather, Calculator and Stocks. Rumor has it Apple didn't think those apps would scale to look good on the bigger iPad screen. Since then, Apple has added a clock app with iOS 6, but the other four are still missing. Fortunately, many great developers have filled that void and proven that, not only can these apps look good on the iPad. They can look great.

Check the Weather is a great weather app for the iPhone that has an elegant, minimalist design yet offers advanced forecast details including current conditions, hazardous weather alerts, and hourly and extended forecasts. For users within the United States it also shows a live doppler weather radar map and Dark Sky powered short term precipitation forecasts.
