iOS 7.1: What did it fix for you and what's still broken?

iOS 7.1: What did it fix for you and what's still broken?

iOS 7.1 is live for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and with it a whole bevy of fixes and additions. Since Apple makes updates so easy, and adoption rates are so high, that means many of you have likely taken the plunge already. It also means you've likely scoured through every change to find what'...
How do you use your iPad?

How do you use your iPad?

Apple juggled their iPad lineup yesterday, kicking the iPad 2 to the curb and bringing the iPad 4 back out of retirement. For anyone who wants a slightly less expensive full-sized iPad, that's a big improvement. For anyone trying to decide which iPad they want, it's even more confusing. We have...
How do you protect your iPhones and iPads?

How do you protect your iPhones and iPads?

Almost everyone has been in this situation at one point or another. You pick up a new iPhone 5s or iPad Air, maybe a iPhone 5c or Retina iPad mini, you use it for a while, and then it starts to show signs of wear and tear. Maybe you banged it against the wall and got a little ding on it, maybe it...
Is iOS 7.1 worth giving up your jailbreak for?

Is iOS 7.1 worth giving up your jailbreak for?

iOS 7.1 brings a few new features, some great accessibility updates, and some much needed bug fixes to the iPhone and iPad. If you want it, however, you're going to have to give up your jailbreak to get it. That's because, unlike iOS 7.0.x, iOS 7.1 has been jailbroken yet and, as is increasingly...

Thanks to Fantastical 2 for iPad I can now rapidly enter and find appointments and events on all my Apple devices, all the time. Flexibits' hyper-efficient, natural-language parsing calendar app first shipped for the Mac in May of 2011. Fantastical for iPhone landed in November of 2012. Now it's...
Why a 5-inch iPhone 6 is far more important than a 13-inch iPad Pro

Why a 5-inch iPhone 6 is far more important than a 13-inch iPad Pro

iPhone 6. 2014 has only just begun and it seems like 5-inch iPhone and 13-inch iPad Pro rumors are already getting a lot of attention and generating a lot of discussion. That both sets of rumors tend to focus around larger screen sizes is interesting, but what's really interesting is why a bigger...

The iPad 2 is dead...long live the iPad 4!

Following recent speculation, Apple has this morning finally laid the iPad 2 to rest. Replacing it, is the iPad 4. That's right, Apple's "iPad with Retina Display" is back on sale starting at $399 in black and white for the Wifi only version, and from $529 in the same colors for the cellular...
Would you want the Phone app on your iPad?

Would you want the Phone app on your iPad?

Should the iPad have the Phone app? With all the talk of a large screen iPhone 6 this year, and potentially more in the years to follow, it's got me wondering — how big is too big? One of the arguments for a big screen iPhone is that it would better serve people who need a phone but want only...
iPad 4 might replace iPad 2 tomorrow as well, Lightning to reign supreme!

iPad 4 might replace iPad 2 tomorrow as well, Lightning to reign supreme!

The iPad 4 could be set to replace the ancient iPad 2 as Apple's lower-end, full-sized tablet as early as tomorrow. Combined with rumors of an 8GB iPhone 5c, if everything plays out, we could see an end to the venerable 30-pin Dock connector, and the new Lightning plug run the Apple line. Mark...

Is Apple about to lay the iPad 2 to rest?

Three years after its introduction by Steve Jobs, is the iPad 2 set to finally be put to rest? With the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina Display now ruling the roost, a report by AppleInsider claims that the golden oldie is set to be discontinued: According to people familiar with Apple's...

Imagining iPad 5: Lighter, thinner design, gold as standard

Looking back, the original iPad was thick, heavy, RAM-starved, and low resolution. It was also magnificent. A big iPhone, according to its detractors, unimaginative, and, of course, doomed. Turns out it was an iPhone gone IMAX, bigger but also broader, as imaginative as the person using it, and the next evolution of personal computing. But, thick and heavy. Apple fixed that somewhat with the iPad 2, regressed slightly with the iPad 3 and 4, and then showed the world a thinner, lighter future with the 7.9-inch iPad mini. The iPad mini was so light and thin it was impossible to look at it and not want the same design on the 9.7-inch iPad 5. And it looks like that just might be exactly what we get...

Touch ID is the future, so when are we getting it on the iPad and Mac?

With the iPhone 5s, Apple has introduced the first, functional, mainstream fingerprint ID sensor - Touch ID. With it, the touch of your finger activates a scanner that reads the living, sub-dermal layer for ridges, arches, and whorls, transfers the data to a secure enclave on the brand new Apple A7 processor, and then returns a simple yes/know response to unlock the phone or authorize an iTunes transaction. Once you get used to how easy and utterly transparent it is, you start to want it everywhere, and you don't stop. How about the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2, rumored to be coming this October? How about the Mac?

You're doing it wrong, or why using an iPad keyboard is like attaching a sail to your car

Earlier today Rene posted an interesting piece called The state of the mobile keyboard…and what comes next! and it got me thinking: I'm fully aware that some people have no problem writing long amounts of content on the iPad. I envy those of you who do. I just can't. And I can't help but feel like using a keyboard with the iPad is just wrong.

Apple event on September 10 almost certainly not going to include new iPads

By now we're all pretty convinced of a September 10 Apple event to launch the new iPhone 5s and quite possibly the iPhone 5c. But, now a report out of Bloomberg is suggesting that we might be seeing new iPads on that date as well:

More next-generation iPad and iPad mini casings purportedly leak, this time in silver

Back in January iMore mocked up and talked about the next-general iPad 5, and how it would likely take design cues from the iPad mini, getting smaller and thinner, which translates into lighter. Since then there've been several casings purportedly leak out, the latest of which (below) show what could be the silver/white option.

iPhone, iPad, iPod and Mac: 2013 back to school buyers guide!

There's nothing more stressful for parents or students than the annual back-to-school insanity that prefaces the actual return to educational institutions across the land. From kindergarten to grade school to high school to college, from clothes to supplies to books to gadgets, there's so much to get done and so little time to do it. We feel your pain. It's our pain too. And while we can't help you with all of it, we can absolutely help you with the gadget part. Whether you're a parent shopping for your child, or a student trying to decide what to get yourself, here's every iPod, iPhone, iPad, and Mac made by Apple, and our buyer's guide for each and every one!

Important note: Apple will almost certainly release new iPhones, iPods, iPads, and Macs (with the exception of the Air) this fall. If you have to buy now, now, now, ignore that and get whatever's best today. If you can wait, however, you'll typically pay the same amount for better technology come September/October.

Why the iPad is more like the iPod than iPhone

The iPad business being closer to Apple's iPod business than the carrier-entangled iPhone business isn't a new theory, but given the increased maturity of the product line, it's one that's increasingly subject to objective rather than subjective analysis. And that's just what Ben Thompson of Stratechery has started doing, not only for today, but what it could mean for the future:

Rumored iPad 5 parts assembled for real video peep show

Apple has been working on redesigning the full-sized iPad for a while now with a goal towards making it thinner - which means lighter - and bringing it into line with the new design language introduced with the current iPad mini. Like with the iPad mini, however, battery life is the enemy of thin, Retina iPads. The video above represents alleged parts for that design, assembled and put on display by Macotakara.

Some reports say the entire App Store fails to load, while others say only the Updates tab fails to load. Either way, it's frustrating for those experiencing it.
