After our own Rene Ritchie took the ice bucket challenge to raise and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ASL), Apple CEO Tim Cook did the same with a bucket of ice pouring down him at a company event. In addition to Cook, Apple marketing head Phil Schiller also participated in the challenge at a separate beach location.

Up for auction: Lunch with Eddy Cue and MacBook Air Package

Apple Senior VP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue is donating a one-hour lunch along with a MacBook Air at Apple's Cupertino headquarters as part of an auction that benefits the National Association of Basketball Coaches Foundation. The value of the MacBook Air itself is $1,1999 and at the time of writing, the auction has a current $16,000 bid.

Race for charity in Sidekick Cycle on iOS

Apple design VP Jony Ive and industrial design maven Marc Newsom have collaborated for charity on the design of a number of products on auction next month through Sotheby's, including solid gold Earpods, a table, a piano and a Leica camera. Now there's a one-off red-clad Mac Pro as well. It's expected to fetch between $40,000 - $60,000.

Apple donates $2.5 million to the American Red Cross, Hurricane Sandy relief efforts

On behalf of its employees, Apple has donated $2.5 million to the American Red Cross to aid in their Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. Hurricane Sandy was the largest Atlantic hurricane in modern memory, devastating the eastern seaboard from the Caribbean to the northeastern United States between October 22 and October 31, 2012, causing damages estimated to be in excess of $20 billion, and incalculable human impact. Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, informed employees of the donation yesterday via email.

Tim Cook announces new charitable matching program for Apple

New Apple CEO Tim Cook has sent out an email to employees detailing a new program whereby Apple USA will match personal charitable donations up to $10,000 annually. The email reads:

I am very happy to announce that we are kicking off a matching gift program for charitable donations. We are all really inspired by the generosity of our co-workers who give back to the community and this program is going to help that individual giving go even farther.
