Absinthe 2.0 has launched and it provides support for a fully unthethered jailbreak under iOS 5.1.1 (and only iOS 5.1.1) for the following devices:
- iPad, iPad 2, new iPad (except the 2012 iPad 2, which will come later)
- iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S
- iPod touch 3, iPod touch 4
Developed by a collaborative "Dream Team" between Chronic-Dev Team and iPhone Dev Team, Absinthe 2.0 and promises to be so easy, your "grandma could do it." Here are the steps:
Refurbished iPad 2 and original iPad models sold through Apple have had their prices cut by between $20 and $50 recently. For the cost of a brand-spanking-new Retina iPad, you could get a gently-loved iPad 2 with four times the storage and possibly a lot more battery life.
Last month we had learned that some iPad 2 units were being loaded with a new 32 nanometer version of the Apple A5 process, and as you might expect, testing results show that it is providing a significant increase in battery life.
One of the things I most eagerly wanted in the new iPad was a better speaker. I didn't expect it, mind, you, but when some early reviewers mentioned the new iPad had the loudest speaker they've ever heard on a tablet, my ears perked up and I became very excited.
The new iPad sports a 9.7-inch, 2048x1536, 264ppi Retina display, which is twice as dense as the iPad 2's equal sized, 1024x1536, 132ppi screen but packs four (4) times as many pixels into the same space. That's exactly what it sounds like -- the new iPad has 4 pixels in the same space the iPad 2 had a 1 pixel.
One of the features of the new iPad that Apple brags about is the new camera. The FaceTime front-facing camera is still a poor quality VGA camera, but the rear camera has been upgraded to a 5 megapixel iSight camera with a f/2.4 lens and 1080p video-recording capabilities. Although it's not as good as the iPhone 4S' 8 megapixel camera, it's still a huge improvement from the poor camera featured on the iPad 2.
The camera quality on the iPad 2 didn't really impress anybody, but some sample shots from the new iPad have surfaced, and show a definite improvement in quality.
With the new iPad around the corner, there are lots of people wondering if now is the time to jump into the wonderful world of tablets. Of course, the new iPad will be the first one many first timers will look at. Many savvy shoppers, however, will also take a look at the alternatives before taking the plunge. That's especially true of low-cost alternatives like the BlackBerry PlayBook, Amazon Kindle Fire, and smattering of other bargain bin Android tablets (like the $100 ZTE Optik). The question is simple: how much are you willing to spend, and what value can you get for your money?
