Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy arrive on iPhone and iPad

Tieing in with the launch of the movie of the same name, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is available today on iPhone and iPad for $4.99 from the App Store. Despite the tie in, Guardians of the Galaxy: The Universal Weapon is an original storyline and falls into the 'action role playing game' genre.

Captain America: The Winter Solider is in theaters now — catch up in iTunes or Netflix!

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a sequel to both Captain America: The First Avenger and The Avengers, and a quasi tie-in to ABC's ongoing Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D television series. It also riffs on Ed Brubaker's classic comic book arc of the same name and that it manages to weave all those threads together into a pretty entertaining movie is a testament to just how well Marvel/Disney has planned their cinematic universe. If you haven't watched the previous films and shows, however, you can still catch up on all of them via iTunes and a fair chunk via Netflix as well (depending on what country you live in, because, ugh.)

Marvel, Netflix sign deal to bring Daredevil, Power Man, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, and the Defenders to the small screen

Disney's Marvel division has signed a deal with Netflix to bring Daredevil (I liked the Affleck film, what of it?), Luke Cage (Power Man), Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, and the Defenders to the streaming video service starting in 2015. Each character will get their own show, and then in Marvel Cinematic style, the Defenders will team them all together. Alan Fine, President of Marvel Entertainment:

Gameloft has announced that - of course - they'll be bringing an adaption of Marvel and Disney's upcoming Thor sequel, Thor: The Dark World to iOS along with the movie this fall. Marvel Unlimited brings 70 years, 13,000 issues of back catalog comics to iPhone and iPad

Marvel Unlimited is a new, native app front end for Marvel's Digital Comics Unlimited subscription service. It lets you read 70 years and 13,000 issues of back catalog comics -- Spider-Man, Iron Man, the Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Wolverine, the Avengers, the X-Men, Fantastic Four, etc. -- right on your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. That means you don't get the really new stuff -- you need a pay-per-issue app like Comics by comiXology to get almost anything from the last year -- but you do get an incredible amount of the classics.

Marvel Comics Unlimited tests iPad friendly beta

Marvel Comics Unlimited is a Netflix-like service that lets you subscribe to and consume huge quantities of catalog titles. Like Netflix, it isn't the new stuff, and the old stuff is rife with content gaps, but unlike Netflix, until now Marvel Comics Unlimited was locked into Adobe's Flash player, and that meant it couldn't work on the iPad. iBooks (pictured above), Kindle, and the ComiXology apps have all been options, though single purchase a la carte ones. That's starting to change, however, with a new, iPad-compatible version of the player now being offered as a beta to subscribers.

Avengers Initiative for iPhone and iPad review

Avengers Initiative is Infinity Blade starring the Incredible Hulk. At least right now. Marvel, their parent company Disney, and developer Wideload promise more Avengers will be assembling to join the fray in future updates, including Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, and the Black Widow. If that sounds a lot like the cast of this summer's blockbuster Avengers movie directed by Joss Whedon, that's probably not a coincidence. This is meant to be mainstream superhero game, but it hides a ton of comic geek love inside as well.
