On the future of Twitter: Developer reactions

I've already had my rant, as have John Gruber, Matthew Panzarino, Lex Friedman, M.G. Siegler, Jerry Hildenbrand, Benjamin Brooks, Shawn Blanc, and many others across the blogsphere. Which is good, because tech bloggers, especially Apple and mobile tech bloggers, tend to be monster Twitter users (and not the automated social media marketing types -- actual heavy-duty users the type of which helped spin up the service to begin with.) Yet we, like any user, will be challenged only so far as the apps we use to engage Twitter are challenged, and those apps are made by developers, and those developers are at the front lines.

So what are the Twitter developers saying? Here are some excerpts and links back, and I'll add more as I find them.

Twitter raises API walls, seems intent on starving out traditional apps

Twitter has announced the upcoming version 1.1 of their API, and provided yet more "direction" to Twitter app developers. First, it's important to remember that the sky isn't falling. The Twitter apps you use today will still be usable tomorrow. The community you enjoy right now will still be with you for the foreseeable future. Yet reading the pronouncements, it's impossible not to realize that Twitter's plans for those apps and that community will change them, soon, and forever.

iOS 6 preview: Siri shares to Facebook and Twitter, launches apps for everyone

Siri was a bit of a tease on iOS 5 and the iPhone 4S -- while it could send Messages and Mails, it couldn't send status updates to Twitter or Facebook, and it couldn't even open an app. With iOS 6, however, Siri is not only launching on the iPad, but it's launching you into any app on your device, and posting tweets and updates like a social champ.

Editor's desk: Google I/O, Twitter-pocalypse III, 300 + 1, and more!

It's July 1 and that means it's Canada Day here in the great white north -- or The Wall, as HBO fans would now better understand it.

Canada Day, for those unfamiliar, celebrates the 1867 signing of the British North America Act, which united Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Upper and Lower Canada (Ontario and Quebec). Suffice it to day, there's been barbecue and parades already, and there'll be fireworks soon, so for the second week in a row I'm going to Nickinson this and keep it brief-y.

How to stop Twitter from tracking you across the Web

This week Twitter announced a new version of its "Who to Follow" feature, making it a far more personal recommendation engine. The way it works, however, is that if you're logged into Twitter in the web browser, any site that calls Twitter code -- like a Tweet or Follow button -- can report your presence on that site back to Twitter. Gadget sites. Car sites. Movie sites. Porn sites. Gaming sites. Any. Site.

Here's how to turn it off.
