Weekly Photo Contest: Bokeh!

Weekly Photo Contest: Bokeh!

This week's photo contest is bokeh, which is just the common term for shallow depth of field. Everyone's seen it whether they know it or not. Popular examples are blurred lights in the background while the subject is in the foreground. It's typically a desired affect in portrait photography but has its place in other areas as well. Your challenge is to create bokeh in your photography in a tasteful and appropriate manner. And remember, post editing apps are okay as long as they are for iOS.

The contest begins today and ends Tuesday, January 28th at 10 p.m. Eastern time. Good luck!

It's also time to announce the winner of our last photo contest! And the winner is...

Congrats forum member corfu67 for submitting the above photo. There were a lot of amazing entries this week but I feel this photo was not only awesome, but stayed very close to the topic at hand. Great job!

We'll be contacting you shortly to claim your prize!

And without any further delay, here are the details on this week's photo contest...

The prize: $25 iTunes gift card!

The winner of this week's photo contest will receive a $25 iTunes gift card to help them load up on all the photo apps they want, or any other kind of apps for that matter!

The rules

Submitted photos must have been taken with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

We'll check the EXIF data of the original file to verify and any edits must have been done with an iPhone or iPad app. No Photoshop, Lightroom, or other external editing programs! If you have external lens accessories such as an Olloclip or other snap-on lens, you are more than welcome to use them.

You can submit as many photos as you'd like, but remember, this is a contest, so make sure you submit your best work!

Resources

Now, before you run off to take your photo, remember that it's not technical skill alone that will claim this prize. Even if you're not the best photographer (yet!), a great eye and a great subject can still get you the win.

However, a little help can never hurt, so make sure you check out our iPhone photography series for some tips.

How to submit

Submitting your photos is easy. just head over to the iMore Photography Forum and post your photos to the official contest thread. Don't forget to state what device you have and which apps, if any, you used to edit your photo!

That's it! Now go out and shoot!

Great idea but how do you make a bokeh with the iPhone?

Becjr says:

Use the focus feature (as best as possible) on the iPhone stock "Camera" app (or an app like "ProCamera") & maybe enhance w/an app like "Bokeh Lens", maybe?

Strike that - no external apps.
Doh!
Does anyone have an Olio macro lens that I could use?

Um yes you can use ANY app store apps, just not things like photoshop on the desktop.

The regular iPhone camera can still pull off some bokeh. You'll just have to get as close as you can to an object before focus is lost and have a background that is far behind your subject. Also, it should be even better with the iPhone 5S because it has a larger aperture.

Has there been a winner? It's been a couple of weeks since the "Weekly" Photo Contest ha ha. Just making sure I didn't miss something. Thanks!

Some suggestions for good free and paid apps for iOS that can give you the bokeh effect would be nice if possible.

I use snapseed for most editing. It's bokeh capabilities are great!

Great job corfu67, what a great picture. It almost gives the illusion that the image is made up of the water droplets!
