If you want to start a podcast or get on stream, you need a decent mic. While the one your headset includes might be ok, the one built-in to your computer certainly won't cut it. Either way, you want to sound good and a standalone mic is the way to go. Thankfully, Woot is making it way more affordable to grab a stellar mic with the Blue Yeti (opens in new tab) being offered there for just $64.99 in refurbished condition. You'd usually pay nearer $90 for a refurb model at Amazon (opens in new tab) and over $100 brand new (opens in new tab). The discount applies to the silver, black, and midnight blue models, all of which have been factory reconditioned and come with a 2-year Blue warranty.

The Blue Yeti USB microphone features a pattern selector which allows you to pick up audio from a specified direction (directly in front of the mic, all around the mic, in front and back of the mic, etc.). It also features a gain control dial and a mute button, along with zero-latency headphone output. The mic is super popular with podcasters and has almost 8,500 reviews at Amazon with an average rating of 4.4 stars out of 5 (opens in new tab).

The mic works with Windows XP and up or Mac OS X 10.4.11 or higher. It requires a minimum of 64MB of RAM, which is a really basic requirement.

If the Yeti is too much mic for you, you could also go for the Blue Snowball (opens in new tab). It's also a USB-powered condenser mic, but it doesn't cost quite as much. Either option would be good for an aspiring video maker or podcast recorder. That's totally up to you, though.
