Update: Engadget re-did the math and it looks like the iPhone 3G S is actually 21% faster than the Palm Pre (for now).

According to Anandtech, Dieter was spot on in his iPhone 3G S vs. Palm Pre browser speed test video. (as was our iPhone 3G S vs. iPhone 3G smackdown video)

The bigger story, of course, is not only do we have several great devices pushing competition and better serving users these days, but Mobile WebKit (the rendering engine behind Apple's Safari, Google's Chrome Lite, Palm Pre's browser, and Nokia S60 (tip of the hat to Sascha Segan) has become the mobile internet platform.

That it's relentlessly standards based, scales elegantly from desktop (where it ironically holds minimal share) to handset, and is continually being improved upon makes us especially happy for all concerned devices.

    Yep, just like I thought.

  2. Caspar says:

I'm viewing this on a 3G S now and it did load very quickly!

  3. Truth says:

All this speed and the most you will be able to do is browse faster and play games. When can we multitask Apple?

  4. Brrandon says:

I seriously doubt the results from yesterday confirm anything. Fist, Dieter didn't close all windows on the Pre, so it could've been performing tasks in the background, next he had sh*tty sprint coverage at the time, and lastly he was hitting Go on the iPhone first, then hitting it on the Pre.

All that and the iPhone just barely won out over the Pre. iPhones weakness is still it's network.

    So true Brrandon... So true...

  6. Rene Ritchie says:

Wow, such lack of simple grace in the comments. Disheartening. They're both great phones. Chillax.

  7. Jeremy Sikora says:

@Rene, always the peace maker you are. :) But in all honesty I'd be mad too if I owned a Pre. ;)

  8. Seth says:

    Sigh...

I'll never understand why people even give a crap about rabidly bashing one thing over another. Cause and effect. Action and reaction. Inertia. Without the iPhone, the Pre would be a singular wet dream in the mind of a Palm fanboy after a full night of WinMo bashing at WMExperts.

Face it, piss and moan all you like: the Pre would not exist, nor would your argument, nor would your presence in this blog/forum/site without the iPhone and its features to emulate. And I'm not an Apple fanboy. I JUST LIKE COOL STUFF.

As Rene said, both phones are great. Take a shower and calm down.

  9. Nate says:

If you throw out the slashdot.org (statistical outlier) the advantage of the 3gs over the pre is only 11%.

Really this set of data is not a very conclusive test, the pre was actually faster loading 3 of the 9 websites.
