iPhone 4S pre-orders are the best ever, over 1 million in 24 hours

Should you get an iPhone 4S?

Apple has released a statement claiming that the iPhone 4S has become the most popular iPhone based on pre-order sales figures. Apple opened pre-orders for the iPhone 4S on Friday October 7th and received a phenomenal one million orders within the first 24 hours. These figures outstrip the iPhone 4 pre-order figures by over 400,000 units.

“We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do.”

These sales figures are astounding, considering the rather damp reception that the iPhone 4S appeared to receive. Maybe people are beginning to realize that the iPhone 4S is still a major upgrade despite it still having the same form factor as the iPhone 4?

New and updated iPhone and iPad apps for Monday, October 10
  1. Melvin says:

    two of those are mine!

  2. DocGo says:

Yay! One is mine...white 64GB, factory unlocked!

  3. Guest says:

I call BS on these numbers. 200,000 in 12 hours and suddenly jumps another 800,000 in another 12?

I'd accept that 1 million of all iPhones were sold, but not just the 4S. Too many people were locked into the iPhone 4 and too many not satisfied with a large enough upgrade.

3GS owners upgrading are many, but not that many.

    • Moo says:

      200k was only one carrier - AT&T

      • Guest says:

        Ah, my mistake.

Still it matters little given that AT&T would have been the only one with the major numbers as they were the only ones who had the phone before iPhone4. So most Verizon customers would not be upgrading as they would be locked into the iPhone4.

        • Anonymous says:

Wrong again. Piles of people on Verizon waited. They skipped the iPhone 4 because everyone knew a new iPhone was coming later this year. Verizon will sell iPhone 4Ses like gangbusters.

          • Guest says:

Wrong-o. Once the June date came around and there was no iPhone (or even a mention of an iPhone), they went to other phones.

        • I have the iPhone 4 and was still able to to upgrade. I don't really think you have all the facts.

          • Mr. Orange 645 says:

I'm on Verizon and I bought the iP4 off eBay just so I could save my upgrade. I'm sure I'm not the only. There is always a whole slew of customers up for an upgrade. Especially as we approach the holidays. Also many will sell their current phone on eBay and put that towards buying an iP4s at full retail. Depending on what phone they have, $400 on eBay for an off contract phone is not unheard of. Put that toward an iP4s at full retail and it won't cost that much in the long run.

Verizon the largest carrier and they will have zero problems selling this iteration of the iPhone or the next, or the next, etc...

        • WRONG, not only as @mrjr84 said, but you also have people on Sprint, new carriers in other countries, and that fact that those countries got to order the same day as we did.

    • Bikerbudmatt says:

Based on what? Your injured sensibilities?

I'm glad I waited for this phone to replace my now-creaky but still incredibly well used 3G. I have no problem with the form factor being an entire 12 months old.

    • Anonymous says:

thats because the 200,000 figure was only att first 12 hours

    • Sting7k says:

That 200,000 number was AT&T's own preorders only. It could be more if this does not include that or those from Verizon and Sprint.

    • Anonymous says:

2000,000 for ATT only, Verizon and sprint didn't say anything , but anyways I think this is a worldwide number no US only

  4. Ariel says:

Wasn't the 600,000 preorders when it was just AT&T alone

    • Moo says:

      200k was only one carrier

    • Anonymous says:

The 600k reported for the iPhone 4 was for 5 countries or so, including USA/ATT. And I thought it was for the 3-day weekend. Who knows.

Apple will have to sell 2.5m phones a week for them to 25m phones for the quarter. The first weekend sales really need to hit about 2m to 2.5m.

    • Rob Miracle says:

The way I understand it: 1,000,000 via Apple in 24 hours, 200,000 via AT&T in 12 hours (sold out). Verizon has not reported yet and Sprint, while not reporting has sold out of its 16GB phones according to reports. So if AT&T, Verizon and Sprint all got 200,000 units to sell, the total for all four sellers could reach 1.6M.

  5. I'm telling you, all the pre-orders' major reason for the pre-order is Siri.

  6. M & M says:

One million is possible across all three carriers. Sprint has never had an Iphone. Verizon customers that did not upgrade to the Iphone 4 waited for this one. Then include AT&T's numbers plus those you wanted it unlocked and I could see a million.

  7. cardfan says:

These numbers aren't that surprising to me. Preordering was opened up for other countries in addition to adding Sprint. This is also Verizon's first time on an overall new release.

In other words, the floodgates were opened. Though i personally think of this as a major upgrade, this is nothing compared to what a redesigned phone called the iphone 5 would have brought in. Apple knows this and the stage is set for next year.

  8. Anonymous says:

    Apple destroys the competition again.

  9. so.long.pre says:

I think it has alot to do with sprint's "pre nation" finally getting into the game.

  10. Stephen Ott says:

At work we ordered 11 iPhones 4S phones on Friday morning, and they were all replacing Blackberry and Android devices. None of the iPhone 4 users were upgraded.

  11. Mjaviert says:

Whenever a famous actor, singer, celebrity (Steve Jobs undoubtedly falls under this category) dies, their products suddenly sell like hot pancakes, we experienced that just 2 years ago with the death of Michael Jackson. So the pre order sales don't really surprise me.

I am however, anxious for next years iPhone, I'm pretty sure it will be bigger and thinner, larger screen, 3d and LTE

  12. Robert says:

No surprise. There are a ton of us who knew we were going to upgrade to this phone before it was announced. The iPhone 4 features alone were a good enough upgrade, but we can’t justify upgrade every year. Now, we’re going to get all the good stuff from the iPhone 4 and more. The fact that this announcement was delayed based on what we were expecting has just made the anticipation stronger.

Claiming it was a “damp reception” before the pre-orders opened up is silly. The reception that counts is whether people buy it. Anything else is just talk.

  13. USA Rocks says:

4gs tops 2 million pre order.

  14. Alf Zamudio says:

now that its open to all carriers im not surprised. especially those itching at being stuck with android phones, now wanting something polished and newer.

@cardfan i also believe this is a major update, the stability in video, the new optics in the camera, faster processor.

when i made the switch from 3g to 3gs, it felt like night and day.

    • LetsGoMexico says:

when i made the switch from iphone 3G to evo 4G it felt like icey tundra of alaska to warm paradise of jamaica.

  15. 200k for AT&T in just 12 hours. Add in the Verizon, Sprint, and international numbers and 1 million seems reasonable in the first 24 hours.

  16. rewNATION says:

I can't wait to get mine

  17. BillyB says:

I'm glad to hear this. Although if it had of been the iPhone 5 like most people were expecting the pre-orders would probably be about 5 million. Still haven't made up my mind whether I'm getting the 4S or just sticking with my 4 until 5.

  18. LoveToTroll says:

Why would anybody want a brand new phone that's three years behind the curve? I'll take my evo 4G from 2009...

  19. Anonymous says:

I wish they would tell us how many of these are just people upgrading... We all knew it would sell... Even if alot of people were disappointed..

  20. mrsFAB says:

They let me upgrade early. My white 32 gig AT&T will be here Friday. Woot!

  21. Anonymous says:

    congrats

  22. so.long.pre says:

are we overlooking the fact that, this iphone is the last one steve jobs had his hands on? that man was the einstein of our generation, so I think alot of people with the cash are going to pay homage and cop one for GP.
