Where are all those people who said Apple messed up severely and were going to see a huge drop in sales because of it...?
To put this into perspective: Google is activating 2M per day. No reason to shame for iPhone though. Still respectable number
that may be but not of one single model , google is "activating" various models from all of it's partners not from one single model
Android doesn't roll like that so you'll likely never see sales like that for one Android phone.
have you got a source for this ? just interested.
Last I heard it was only 550: http://www.dailytech.com/Google+Sets+Earnings+Record+Sees+550K+Android+Activations+Daily/article22164.htm
yeah same , was wondering how it suddenly jumped up so much.
Check Larry Page comments (Google+) to Q3 Google results. 190M activations per quarter / ~90 days = ~2M per day.
Thanks, that a 400% increase which is impressive.
Ah...nice.
To add even more perspective:
Apple is the world's #1 smartphone vendor in terms of units sold. Edged out Samsung last quarter.
Apple takes 2/3 of all profits in the cell phone industry. The entire industry, not just in smartphones.
The various generic Android vendors are all trying to kill each other. Let's hope they do.
So what you are saying is that: 1. Apple has a monopoly on iOS - less consumer choice 2. iOS monopoly creates huge profits (and inflated pricing) - higher prices for the consumer 3. Android has lots of choice for the consumers Sounds great for Apple, but bad for consumers.
I would rather focus on Apple creating a great, reliable, designed-in-the-USA, high quality product - not on their monopoly screwing the consumer.
It's hardly a monopoly. Doesn't even fit the definition of monopoly. That's high school economics.
There are a lot of people who weren't ready to upgrade to the iPhone 4 before, so naturally a lot of people upgraded. I'm still on an iPhone 3G, so I know once I get back from my trip outside the country, I'll be sure to upgrade to a 4S.
wow
I don't get why people were so up in arms about this phone. They really only change the number when the design changes, no design change just a refresh hence it only being called the 4s. Personally I love the design, I don't want it to change.

I am not surprised. It's just amazing
Moved from the palm pre on Sprint. Enjoying it.
As a former Pre user (pre + on VZW) - I couldn't be happier with my 4. iOS 5 improved one of the two features I missed from the Pre -- Notifications. And to be honest, iOS doesn't have that wierd resizing issue I noticed with my Pre.
Now, if we could just get Synergy -- iOS would be perfect.
I am also glad that thee was no case design change. All of my accessories still fit and work. That's a larger investmant than the phone alone. GREAT JOB APPLE
would you be happy if they keep this design forever then for iphone6/7/8etc
still not buying..happy with my 4.
I was one of those millions who picked up the 4s. It's my first iPhone and I am enjoying it. The 4 was the first iPhone that visually appealed to me so I'm glad they didn't change the basic design. The only improvements I would like to see are a gorilla glass screen and an aluminum versus glass back. I'm rough on my phones!
It is gorilla glass dude...
Cool, I didn't realize that!
I'm happy with my 4S
really like it as my primary line
I got an iPhone 4 running on IOS 5 it's just perfect, but honestly I'm thinking of getting the new iPhone 4s

4 million is great, and I plan to make it 4 million and one when I get home. However, I can't defend these numbers when they're comparing the first 3 days of sales in 2011 to 2010. They fail to mention or give credit to the fact that the phone was released on 3 carriers in the U.S. this year. 2010 also lacked the white iPhone 4 and how many people sat on the sidelines for 3 days waiting for it? That said, I doubt if Sprint and VZW made up the 2.3 million difference but the comparison isn't as direct as the press makes it.
The numbers are world wide. I doubt that adding a couple carriers to the alread long list is what made the difference.
Yeah, I could have done a better job of pointing that out. 2.7mil was a little "tongue in cheek" that didn't translate to text. I was really just trying to point out market availability. Globally, is it available to the exact same number of people? Wait till it's available in China, the have 970 million active cell phones. If it was available in China last Friday, and just one percent of those bought an iPhone, you'd have nearly 5 million in 3 days. Would the press mention that? I'd hope so but doing so would take a little luster of the shine of 5 million sold.
Typical American. Clueless to the fact there are other countries. You probably get confused when asked where mexico and Canada are.
Thanks Pap! I'm well aware of where those countries are. I'm also aware that iPhone 4 was a "global" launch that sold 1.7 million phones in its first 3 days and 4S is going gangbusters as well. I simply wanted to point out the fact that the U.S. iPhone market is not as isolated, or exclusively for AT&T, as it was in June of 2010. I didn't comment on the European and Asian markets because I didn't feel like researching who had what on launch day (because as typical American I'm also lazy, right?) My apologizes for merely alluding to the fact that VZW and Sprint couldn't sell 2.7 on their own. I do realize that global markets will probably make up 2/3 of the sales share. What I was really trying to get at is if they can't make a objective comparison, what's the point? Market availability is the key here. If they didn't mention that it's now available to 3/4 of the cellular customers in America giving sales a boost, who knows what they're not telling us about the over seas markets.
I think it's more typical of an American to just to blindly accept "facts" and regurgitate them as absolute truth. I'm exercising my right to think freely, objectively and question authority, even when the news is good. Maybe that makes me a cynic, but I'd rather be well informed and miserable than misinformed and content.
And Mexico brings what to the discussion? Canada I get but Mexico? Come on be sensible.
Was a joke dummy. Two huge countries that border the US and I was implying that he got confused when asked where they are. The joke Had nothing to do with sales.
Wow now I'm a dummy. I feel so bad about myself next to your superior intellect.
Most people do.
You have just confirmed you are a putz. Nothing more to say.
Suk ma bawz
It was worth the upgrade from the 4, it's faster and I love talking to Siri. Even works in the car, I think it's running through the bluetooth. I think my phone calls the car, I see my number show up in the display and then Siri talks through the speakers and I reply in the car mic. It just works.
You can just imagine Tim Cook sitting in his office, thinking, "Who's a flop now, b*tch?"
With carriers like Sprint guaranteeing sales, it is fair to ask the same question that always gets levied at other platforms:
...to end users, or to the channel?
Another fact I should have mentioned below! A very valid point.
I think Apple has always talked end user sales, not channels like some Android tablets did.
Apple definitely has that good history, but it's a fair (if somewhat flamebait) question to ask, since Apple did not explicitly say to customers this time around.
In any case, I don't think anybody doubts that the 4S launch was a huge sales success.
Sorry, HTML fail...just closing the bold tag here in case Disquss does not correct my stupidity
True. It is valid.
That's all those people who skipped iPhone 4 buying...
15 per second
Still waiting for my Sprint iPhone... Best Buy screwed me over with the pre-order
Nice!!!!!!
I knew it'd do well but wouldn't have guessed this well. #motivation
I do wonder now how many are new or just upgrades. It doesn't matter in the long run but wondering how it affects marketshare.
That's amazing. See what happens when you have (almost) enough product to meet demand? Sales records.
