A tale of two bigger iPhones

One of the more popular rumors making the rounds right now is that Apple will release not one but two new, bigger iPhones this year. The first would be the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the second, a 5.5-inch Apple "phablet". These rumors aren't coming from overly sensational, overly outlandish sources,...

iOS 7.1: What did it fix for you and what's still broken?

iOS 7.1 is live for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and with it a whole bevy of fixes and additions. Since Apple makes updates so easy, and adoption rates are so high, that means many of you have likely taken the plunge already. It also means you've likely scoured through every change to find what'...

iPhone 6: Six things I'd like to see!

iPhone 6 fantasies will no doubt reach fetishistic levels at some point, but we're far enough out from the fall, and from the inevitable leaks that will come as fall approaches, that many possibilities, many dreams, remain open to us. What with the all the new Android phones at MWC dropping like...

iPhone 5S and HTC One M8

The new HTC One (M8) and the iPhone 5s

If you want an aluminum phone, you've come to the right place. The iPhone is no stranger to metal, of course. (And presumably it'll stay that course with the iPhone 6 later this year.) But today, Android smartphone manufacturer HTC announced its newest flagship with an old name — the HTC One....

iPhone 5c review: 6-months later

Editor's note: The iPhone 5c was released 6 months ago today. Since I've been using the iPhone 5s almost exclusively since then I wanted someone else, someone who's been using the iPhone 5c day in and day out, to write the follow up for Apple's other new phone. Someone perhaps not as steeped in...
How can Apple avoid another iPhone 5c?

How can Apple avoid another iPhone 5c?

Apple doesn't break out sales numbers for individual iPhone models, but other companies keep an eye on things. And since the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s were introduced last fall, one thing's become clear: the iPhone 5c sales haven't burned up the charts. How can Apple avoid that going forward?...

iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c reviews: 3 months later

Three months ago Apple, for the first time ever, released not one but two new iPhones in the same year - the forward thinking iPhone 5s and the fun and friendly iPhone 5c. Both were variants on last year's iPhone 5. The 5s kept the same design but added a monstrous new 64-bit Apple A7 chipset, Apple M7 motion coprocessor, an even better iSight camera, and the Touch ID fingerprint identity scanner. The 5c kept most of the same internals but switched to brightly colored plastic backs. It's a little early to determine just how successful Apple's strategy will be over the course of the year, but having used the new phones for 90 days, it's absolutely long enough to see how both phones are doing for us the consumers. Often lost among the endless marketshare, profit share, and usage share metrics are what matters most to us, the people that buy and live with the phones - how well they work for us not just on launch day, but every day.

How Google had to 'start over' on Android the day the iPhone was announced

Back when the very first iPhone was announced in 2007, it took many of us by surprise, including Google. What Steve Jobs held in his hand on stage that day was unlike any smartphone we'd seen to that date, and it set the precedent for what we see today not only from Apple. In a piece on The Atlantic, excerpts from Fred Vogelstein’s Dogfight: How Apple and Google Went to War and Started a Revolution, illustrate what happened next:

How carriers and subsidies are more like sharks and loans

Last week AT&T's Randall Stephenson was once again repeating the familiar refrain: that Apple and the iPhone (and now other premium smartphones, like Samsung's) demand far too high an up-front price from carriers. If anyone should be charging anyone too much, dammit, it's the carriers! Jean-Louis Gassée, once of Apple, now of Allegis Capital, lays out the case for their shameless complaints in his Monday Note:

MOGA ACE POWER game controller review: Button mashing comes to iPhone!

The MOGA ACE POWER is one of the first MFi (Made for iPhone) game controllers to hit the market. This new generation of Apple-supported, Lightning adapter powered controllers promise even better compatibility and performance, but are they really ready for primetime? Do they make that much of a difference? And can they be used over AirPlay to make a virtual console?

Everything is a remix - even the iPhone!

Everything is a remix - the popular series that showed how films, including Star Wars, are never as original as we think they may be - has shifted attention towards the iPhone. In the video above, Kirby Ferguson highlights both the real-world object influence on the original iPhone design (skeuomorphism) and the influence of Android and Windows Phone on iOS 7.

Which iPhone was the most ground-breaking?

Every once in a while, a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything. Those were the words spoken as Steve Jobs hit the stage and introduced the very first iPhone to the world after having spent two and a half years working on the device. Looking back at that keynote, I'm not so sure everyone at that time felt the same way about it but if they didn't then, the chances are good that they do now.

The iPhone as a product has arguably gone on to reshape not only the smartphone industry but the wireless industry as a whole and while the very first iPhone takes much of that credit for a lot of people, a recent thread in the iMore Forums asks which iPhone do you think broke the most ground for Apple? Was it really the very first iPhone that took it mainstream popularity or was it another iteration?

iPhone already dominating one China Mobile store in Shenzhen

What's the difference between iPhones?

While 'iPhone' often sounds like one, iconic thing, Apple has fielded many different models, and an incredible array of variants over the years. This year there's the state-of-the-art iPhone 5s, the pop-art iPhone 5c, and the held-over iPhone 4s. Sure, 5 sounds higher than 4, but what's the real difference between all these models? Does more money really get you more features, does saving up-front cost you in the long run, and how much phone do you really need? If you're looking to get your first iPhone, or looking to get one for family or friends, figuring it all out can be confusing. Here's what you need to know!

74% of Apple mobile devices now running iOS 7

Apple has posted a chart on their developer center showing that iOS 7 adoption, as measure by connections to the App Store between November 25 and December 1, 2013, has reached 74%. That means, in the less than 3 months since launch, very nearly 3 out of every 4 iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads that connect to the App Store are now running the latest version of Apple's mobile software. 22% are running iOS 6, and only 4% are running iOS 5 or earlier.
